Great Video. I actually had the same thing happen with a Land Rover that I bought. I lost my shirt on it, sold it without a title. I wish that this video had existed before I went through that process. THis video made me notice that I got about 4/6 of the way through.
Great video, and in a similar situation. I'm actually down in Pueblo County and recently bought a 1948 Willys CJ2 project from an Estate with clean VIN tag. No title, not running, current tags on it showed 1969......it's a project. I have bill of sale, though. Can i do anything with it as far as getting a title in it's current state being not roadworthy? I expect this to be a project over the next couple years, but don't want any issues coming up after spending time on it, or have it appraised higher than what I purchased for. I just want it in my name for now. Thoughts?
I feel your pain, the fact that it must be “roadworthy” for the certified VIN inspection causes angst for me! I cannot find a way around it though. A guy might be able to trailer it in for a VIN inspection now and hope for the best…. If you do that l recommend going local to Pueblo and not to C Springs. I do believe that you should be able to do the form DR2462, which does not require a bond, and therefore no appraisal.
Nice, here's my story of how I got to the video, wifes buick enclaved got totaled, so we bought a fb market place car for super cheap an older buick century. We did HAVE a title from the previous owner sitting on the kitchen table for about a month with my truck title, my "wonderful" teenage daughter decides she is going to clean up the house and decided the stack of paper work she called "junk mail" needed to be tossed into the trash....and here I am
Ah man, what a pain. Did you register the car in your name before the title got lost? It's way easier to get a replacement title. If not, then yeah I'm pretty sure you'll have to walk through this process. Good luck!
Hey guys, I just got my VIN inspection done today. Quick question, for step 2, where do I physically have to go to submit the records search? That would be DR 2489A. Appreciate the help!
Thanks for watching! I do not know where you can physically take the records search... I did mine all by mail and it was easy. You'll take the results (the form you get back from the DMV) in with your pile of paperwork when you complete the form and submit for approval.
How do you drive the vehicle down to get the vin inspection if there’s no plates on it. Won’t the state police give you a ticket for driving with no plates.
They certainly could. I trailered my vehicles, though you can easily get a temp permit for the vehicle from the DMV to legally drive it to the inspection. Or, just call the office that will do the inspection and get their advice.
Yes! Or at least it did at the time of making this video. You'll want to doublecheck the current guidance, but Yes! having that notarized bill of sale could save you having to get a bond.
Thanks for putting this together! This is one giant hurdle I've been avoiding. Yet looking through CO title & registration documents & Denver DMV's- the process seems overwhelming. I appreciate your clarity and straightforwardness. It makes the task do-able. Thanks again for making your vids!
Thanks Bad Hombre Garage! I bought an 01 lexus is300 with a "jumped/void" title, and I also got paperwork of the owner before the guy i bought it from. Who was going through the "bonded title " process but he only got about half way through before falling out. It took a little time and more money than you to get it all solved/payed for. But now that I know what to do its really not that hard or expensive to accomplish. Just very odd and confusing wording or answers from the websites/govt. Again thanks man, had to watch your vid 30 times to be sure i was on the right track, but it helped me! Ill post a vid soon on my page of my experience
Great video, thank you.. Very thorough! I do have a question, please reply. I've successfully completed this process about 8 years ago and needed a refresh course. It seems either dmv has changed the process or my memory has faded some... Anyhow, how did you get the vehicle to State Patrol for VIN Inspection without licence plates/temp tag? And to the dealer for appraisal for that matter??
@@BadHombreGarage Thank you for your prompt reply. Ok cool... I'll do that. We appreciate your efforts in helping us on your channel.. I subscribed! 😎👍
I happen to live in Charlotte, NC so this video is definitely helpful. In my situation I bought a 71 Chevy impala in SC from someone who had the title to the car but it was in his mothers name and she is deceased and he just wanted to sale it but didn’t want to do process of putting it in his name before selling it. Plus the title had split in half from being folded for so long over time so I’m thinking this maybe my only option.
It might be worth a visit down to the DMV to look into what NC requires. I know that every state is different, and some are easier than others. Good luck!
I bought a 2005 gmc yukon slt back in 2020 and the guy crossed out a name on the title i put about 10k in to the truck that includes the price on what i paid for it went and got it to emissions passed with flying colors when to get the title put in my name but they wouldn't do it because of the crossed out name but when you pull up the registration its in my name i watched you video a while back got the dealer to do some of it they sighned some of the paperwork but it makes no sense why the dmv would let me register it but wouldnt give me plates i had to stop driving it because i kept getting pulled over do i need to start the process all over again?!
Probably. I recommend going in to the DMV with all your paperwork and asking them what you need to do. I had to do this process because of the same issue, the guy I bought it from signed in the wrong place, then crossed his name out. I’ve found that if you go in willing to do the work and ask for help, they are pretty good at the DMV to let you know what you need to do.
Hey guys if its an out of state vehicle you will Also have to get a title record search from the state it last came from as well as the colorado title lien record search thing. One extra step....
I'm going to try this. I just got a black plate 67 galaxie from CA delivered to me here in CO. Got a hell of a deal because it didn't have a title but I got a bill of sale.
@@BadHombreGarage Ive followed your instructions, got the bill of sale notarized and mailed out my $7.20 for the Vin report last week. Hopefully it won't take forever because of lingering Covid-19 issues
How did it work out? Was wondering about inspection also? Do you know what they inspected on the car to make sure it was "roadworthy"? I have a 60s truck with no carb or starter. Wanted to at least do the title search before dumping $$$ into it in case the owner wanted it back. Was wondering what the bare minimum to pass the "roadworthy" hurdle is. Any help would be great my friend.
I am not sure, but I do believe it is. You might have to sit on hold for a while, but a call to the DMV would be able to answer that. Call early in the morning, it will be less hold time.
I do have a few question I know this video was posted a couple of years ago but I’m in the process now. I have the VIN inspection done and it came back all good. When I do step 2, 2489a. Where do I mail the paper after I fill it out and do I also provide a copy of the VIN inspection form with the 2489a?
I believe the address is in the form 2489a itself. If you have a shortened version of the form, google the full version and if I recall the instructions are on a separate page.
@@BadHombreGarage thank you I was able to find the instructions. And thank you for posting this video. It is so so helpful. This whole process has felt so overwhelming and this is exactly what I needed
@@BadHombreGarage hey so a new question lol. I’m on the part where I need to get an appraisal for the car. Is there someone who can come to me and do it? Or do I have to take it somewhere and if so how do I legally drive the car if there’s no plates or anything on the car
@@peneloperomance8377 great question! It is possible to go to the DMV and get temporary plates for the car so you could drive it to get the appraisal. It is also possible to get someone to come to you, or there is the option of finding someone who would do the appraisal all online by sending them pictures of the car. Be careful with any of these options to make sure that the appraisal meets all of the requirements on the form. If I recall the appraisal has to be on a certain type of letterhead for the DMV to accept it. Whatever option you use, just communicate with the person doing the appraisal what your needs are. On one of my vehicles, I got a temp plate and drove it to a dealership. On another vehicle, I used the online option.
Hey Bad hombre. Im in this situation. Have a truck with a engine with no carb or starter. Was wondering if you have to start it up to be considered road worthy? Didnt want to dump money into it until I at least recieved a bonded title. Would I screw myself getting a vin check with it not being "road worthy"?
I think that’s completely up to the individual doing the inspection. When I did it, the officer asked “is it roadworthy?” And that was the end of that discussion. You might just call ahead and ask about your specific situation.
I'm going to try this as soon as I fix my van e450 bus. I live in northern Colorado (Fort Lupton) I'll. Be back in a few months to update my comment if it works.
I'm doing a 2016 e350 shuttle bus, bond process. Im struggling because its a commercial vin number I can't find it on kelly blue book, they stopped making the econoline in 2014, after that its commercial only.
No, not necessarily. For example, sending the certified letter could be done early on to get that process going if you know the last known address of the previous owner. Chances are though, you’ll have to do the step where you submit the form to the state to get that address before you can do the letter.
@@BadHombreGarage Okay thank you so much for the video! I just bought a car and I wasn’t able to transfer the title and I wasn’t able to contact the seller
Mine maybe different... my neighbor has a truck that he obtained from "friend of family", that is now deciect. Any suggestions? Also, thanks for posting.
Is there a title in the name of the deceased? If so, the neighbor should be able to have it transferred. If not, I think this same process might work. It might be worth a visit to the DMV for that one.
I've read you don't need a surety bond for a vehicle over 25 years old. I'm trying to do this same process on an old '82 vehicle.. Do I just go through the same procedure and skip that step? If I am able to get ahold of the last owners can I just ask them to get a duplicate title? It's been in a junkyard for 30 years.
If you can get ahold of the old owners and if they can get a duplicate title then that's way easier. I don't know about the surety bond... I had to do it on both vehicles I used this process for and they were both older than 25 years. I think you need one, but it isn't that hard to do. Just make sure it is for twice the appraised value of the vehicle.
I have a question for you. Hoping you can help. I have a situation similar to yours. I went to the dealership and they gave me an appraisal and put it on their company letterhead, but did not put the dealership license Number. Is it sufficient with the letterhead or does it absolutely have to have the dealership license number on there? Thanks
From my experience, it totally depends on the DMV agent that processes your paperwork. For the trouble it’s worth, I would get that number and make sure it’s on the letter. I mean, even if I had to get the number and write it on there myself in pen. That’s what I would do.
Thanks for watching. I’ve done this process twice- the shortest time was about 5 weeks if I recall. I looked at the Vermont process, but thought if I was going to do the work I might as well do it per my state’s process. It might work though, I just haven’t tried it.
So if the certified letter comes back because the title holder is no longer at that address what then do you send it to them showing it got returned or would you have to track them down to find a new address and start over again with a new certified letter?
@@BadHombreGarage thank you so much you have made this nightmare im in look simply and easy wish the dmv could give people a run fown on it like you have thank you thank you thank you
Great video!! Trying to get a title for my truck 2004 ford F150 and need a appraisal and no dealer wants to help me out. Any Ideas?? In Penrose Colorado. Thanks Dale
That’s crazy that they won’t help. I’d keep trying different dealerships until I found one that agreed to do the appraisal. If you run out of luck there are specialty companies online and local that just do appraisals on old vehicles; I’m sure you could get one of those to help but it’ll probably cost you $250 or more.
@@BadHombreGarage I applied for my VRS Vehicle Record Search online and they give you ONE chance to download the information, It came back NO Records Found. So this will be real interesting at the DMV with no letter to previous owner.
Hi i have a question about sending the letter to the last owner how much detail has to go into the letter i bought a car from a man who bought it from a tow company and didnt put it in his name first and sold it to me with just the tow slip in his name so im going thru the bond process but am stuck on what i should write to the last owner
@Brooke riedel, ultimately I think it comes down to whatever your local DMV wants to accept. The form doesn’t give much detail on what is required in the letter, but I think the intent is to see if the last registered owner still has the title and can give it to you. So, my letter was fairly simple- said how I got the vehicle and asked if they would please contact me. My letter was returned undelivered as the person was no longer at the address. Hope that helps!
Adams County Office at 124th and Hwy 2 will do a VIN inspection. They ask for an appointment however they do not answer their phone so I went there in person. They asked if I had an appointment and I advised they automatically put me on hold, then after 20 minutes I get kicked out. Hmmm, ok, let's do a verification. No one was waiting for one. Just a person standing around and giving the public a bad time. No problem after that process was completed. I had to do a VIN verification as the car was purchased out of state.
@@BadHombreGarage It was what was required in my County. They just confirmed the title vin matched the car vin. They only had one person trained to do it. Perhaps she did more than a walk around. I.e. confirmed model number and year vs vin.
I have a question when it comes to the department of revenue records do you call them or do you have to go up there and present the form so you can get the information I live in Colorado springs I'm just curious I need a little bit of help
Yes; you have to take the vehicle to a certified VIN inspection sight, which you can find on the Colorado DMV website. It’s a pretty big pain, but the officer I dealt with was very nice and helpful.
I did a bonded title on a motorcycle, I learned the process throughly and down pat. It was my first bike and got it from my neighbor super cheap, it was crashed, long story here, he moved several states away, kept saying he'd get me the title, he was a over the road truck driver, gone most the time, he got home one day and his girlfriend burned all his stuff (and my title), Then ofcourse my luck he disappeared on me. I will tell you if you want to this, you better really want the motor vehicle bad, like really want it. Took me almost 11 months, 150$ for the bond(10 cents on the dollar) then I had to buy new tires, battery, all the parts to make it road worthy because you need to go in for a state patrol vin and vehicle inspection( vehicle hauled on a trailer ). Then ofcourse you have a fairly large pack of papers to fill out and learn about, send all of that packet in the mail CERTIFIED TO THE LAST LEGAL OWNER, and it must come back to you undeliverable (took about a month or more to make it back to me and the last legal owner in my case was my old next door neighbor from a year before(I was mailing it next door lol).. keep in mind that the last owner has a chance to take back the vehicle during and up to I think 3 or 4 years even after you get your bonded title. So make sure if you do this that your are rightfully doing so. I might have left out some little things and the order of a couple processes but this guy in the vid fully explains it well, watch it. I'm just telling my real life story. I did get my colorado title after that 11 months approximately, I will say even though I was lawfully doing it, i was scared i was going to lose all the money i had put into that bike the whole process (about 1,500$) because if the last owner wanted to be a d#ck or the state just says no I would have been screwed. Well anyways, I loved that bike, put more work and money into it, road it for 7 years then sold it with no issues. Told myself I'd never do it again..mainly because the part in my state where it had to be road worthy..that's alot of money in an old fixer upper to put in on a gamble like a bonded title. If I remember right you can also have the bonded" word removed from the title after a few years or so. Not that that word on the title really madders.
Im in a similar situation. Have an old truck I bought. No carb and starter or battery. Just not sure what is considered "roadworthy"?. Do they make you test drive it? Or just make sure lights work? Dont want to dump a bunch of money i to it all so the original owner can just claim it when they didnt want it when it wasnt running. Want to do as little as possible until I get at least the letter out. Feel the cert letter should be first and roadworthy step be last so youre not fixing up a vehicle only to be repossessed. BTW my friend is an LEO and he checked VIN which came back clean. So at least thays a step in the right direction.
@@BadHombreGarage Is the valuation and buying the bond something I could do early in the process while waiting for other things like my VIN appointment and mail?
Yeah she was awful im in Arapahoe County near Denver. I had a clean title in hand notarized from Arizona and filled out properly and she said I needed a notarized bill of sale also and I was 1000 miles away from the seller and can't get ahold of them so she just handed me the stack of things to get a bonded title and called the next person without saying a word or explaining anything
@@BadHombreGarage thanks for the helpful video though it saved me 3 weeks of time if I waited till my next appointment and didn't have a proper appraisal. Now im getting another one done, then buying my surety bond. Then turn it all in... I did all the previous steps.

I got a State Trooper to run the vin. on my 1930 Model A. It did not come back being stolen. When he had to put down what color it is he said Rust. I said but isn't Rust Brown.?

I had a temp tag that allowed me to drive to the dealer for an appraisal, but I trailered it to the VIN inspection appointment.

Hopefully I could get a bond title with this information!
Good! Let us know how it goes.
Wow that was a lot of work, but worth it
You're right!
Hey guys if its an out of state vehicle you will Also have to get a title record search from the state it last came from as well as the colorado title lien record search thing. One extra step....
Good advice!
Thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
I'm going to try this. I just got a black plate 67 galaxie from CA delivered to me here in CO. Got a hell of a deal because it didn't have a title but I got a bill of sale.
Right on, I hope it works out for you. Let us all know how it goes!

@@bradyf1506This is just a bonded title that can be done in a ton of states. The inspection is just for the vin not it's roadworthyness
Thank you!
You bet, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for the extremely helpful video! Do you know if the process is the same for motorcycles?
I am not sure, but I do believe it is. You might have to sit on hold for a while, but a call to the DMV would be able to answer that. Call early in the morning, it will be less hold time.
It is. I followed his steps almost a year ago when I found this video. I forgot to come back to thank him. Until now.
@@peneloperomance8377I’m glad it was helpful.
@@BadHombreGarage ok. Thank you. Ill do that. Ill update you on the situation. Im in Grand Junction btw.
I'm going to try this as soon as I fix my van e450 bus. I live in northern Colorado (Fort Lupton) I'll. Be back in a few months to update my comment if it works.
Cool! Yes, please let us know how it goes.
I'm doing a 2016 e350 shuttle bus, bond process. Im struggling because its a commercial vin number I can't find it on kelly blue book, they stopped making the econoline in 2014, after that its commercial only.
Hey Carlos I live in fort Lupton as well how did it work for you?
thanks for the video. Do each of these need to be done in order?
No, not necessarily. For example, sending the certified letter could be done early on to get that process going if you know the last known address of the previous owner. Chances are though, you’ll have to do the step where you submit the form to the state to get that address before you can do the letter.
@@BadHombreGarage Okay thank you so much for the video! I just bought a car and I wasn’t able to transfer the title and I wasn’t able to contact the seller
Power of attorney form does wonders
Yes! If I’m not mistaken, it can let you skip a lot of steps in the process.
Does the POA work if the registered owner is deceased?
So how long did the process take? Have you looked into the Vermont process? Appreciate how you broke it down.
Thanks for watching. I’ve done this process twice- the shortest time was about 5 weeks if I recall. I looked at the Vermont process, but thought if I was going to do the work I might as well do it per my state’s process. It might work though, I just haven’t tried it.
@@BadHombreGarage I've got a car I can buy so just checking out the process I'm in Northern Colorado, this would be less than VT process
So if the certified letter comes back because the title holder is no longer at that address what then do you send it to them showing it got returned or would you have to track them down to find a new address and start over again with a new certified letter?
That is what I have done. The returned letter, along with the certified letter paperwork were all they needed to see.

How long did it take the state to accept your paperwork?

Will they give any paper or something to drive until We get the approval letter to go in and get it registered?
I think you can get a temporary tag for the vehicle, but it might depend on the agent you are working with.
Interesting. Well... just note that there is a major difference between a VIN verification and a Certified VIN inspection! many people get this wrong.
@@BadHombreGarage It was what was required in my County. They just confirmed the title vin matched the car vin. They only had one person trained to do it. Perhaps she did more than a walk around. I.e. confirmed model number and year vs vin.
@@alanlarson5363 gotcha.
I have a question when it comes to the department of revenue records do you call them or do you have to go up there and present the form so you can get the information I live in Colorado springs I'm just curious I need a little bit of help
I had to mail them the form. It may be different now, but a couple of years ago they were not allowing any in person visits.
Did you have to apply for a temporary permit to drive to State Patrol for the VIN inspection?
I would have, but I trailered the car. I did get a temp tag for my old CJ5 when I went through the process.
For the Certified VIN inspection, do you have to physically bring the vehicle to them in person? Or just the information? Thanks for the video!
Yes; you have to take the vehicle to a certified VIN inspection sight, which you can find on the Colorado DMV website. It’s a pretty big pain, but the officer I dealt with was very nice and helpful.
new to Colorado took my Honda si from Utah lost the title
Sounds like you either need to get a new title from Utah and then transfer it to Colorado or do the lost title process for Colorado.
Thanks for adding your experience! It is risky, but possible. Glad it worked out.
