Going through a similar situation right now but I ended up misplacing(losing) the title before I got it transfered into my name, also lost the bill of sale and havent been able to contact the person I bought the vehicle from.
I e-mailed the main office for the state DMV, and he had a very easy 100% legal way for me to apply for a bonded title without a bill of sale. Not going to divulge that info because I can see people using it for the wrong reasons. Contact your state DMV and see if they have a solution for you.
The one thing to remember, in most states is that if the vehicle is not in your name, it is illegal to sell it with a bill of sale. I know, it gets done all of the time, I think most DMV offices turn a blind eye to it as long as the vehicle has been inspected, and you have a surety bond for it. Just don't lie about what's going on because that's where you will end up getting in trouble.

I can't keep watching your videos. I'm not done with my 68 F100 and already looking for a conversion coupe.

here in NC the point of the bond payment is so that if someone claims its stolen, they take that bond money and you keep the car that you bought, may have to put another bond on it though, or it could possibly shorten the bond wait , its 3 years here till you get an actual title assuming no one tries to claim its stolen, i bought a 54 ford 4 door with no title thats pretty much mint and i was freaking out about that at first, guy gave me a bill of sale, so im good, assuming HE didnt steal it, but it was sitting for 20 years so i doubt it

You can get a title through the mail in VT. A real title not temporary.

What if the guy I got the bike from is not the titled owner? Should I still get a bill of sale from my friend I got my bike from?

    As far as concideraby less.
    I laugh at that.
Ive seen vehicals with no title in poor shape being sold for outrages prices .
67 chevy c20 no title. No motor no trans, no floor in bed. Seat is just the spring. Rust bucket. $8000.
As soon as its ... No title. Value drops to hundred of dollars at best.
And thats not even adding if its a rust bucket.
As i say. Too many people thinking they can sell granmas dirty diapers for gold.

You kind of mumbled over what happens if somebody claims the car while you have it bonded! I think you said you lose the car? And your title says don’t do it!

Bull shit. My state doesn't issue title's on vehicles over a certain age that doesn't mean I'm gonna give you a great deal kick sand. Also you can register any car in VT through the mail and get a real title not temporary. As long as it's not stolen or a salvage vehicle all you do is pay administration fees like any other state and sales tax.
