- Breathing's pretty popular these days, but for some folks it can be a real struggle. Let's chat about asthma and some game-changing herbs that can make a world of difference.
We'll dive into what's really going on during an asthma attack - the muscle spasms, inflammation, and mucus overload. Then I'll share my favorite plant allies that can help with each of these issues:
Antispasmodics like lobelia and cramp bark to relax those angry airways
Anti-inflammatories like Brigham tea and stinging nettle to calm things down
Expectorants like elecampane and mullein to clear out the gunk
I've seen these work wonders in my naturopathic practice for both humans and cats. No joke - I can't remember the last time I had to prescribe pharmaceuticals for a cat with asthma!
Stick around to the end where I mention a new emergency response course I'm teaching with my colleague Dr. Jed Adamson. It's packed with life-saving info for those crucial minutes before help arrives.
If you know someone struggling with asthma, share this video and spread the herbal knowledge! Drop a comment if you learned something new - I'd love to hear from you.

I love this Chanel and watch videos again and again, this Chanel has helped me a lot with the most useful information. I am based in U.K. and planning to do the course once I am finished with some other courses that I am doing here
Former paramedic and registered nurse. I worked in emergency medicine for 20 years and telemetry for a few years. I quit when they told me to take the jab or else. I really appreciate your teaching. I use herbs, teas, and tinctures for illness now. Thank you for real-world solutions for very real problems.
Hey from NC hills, I have COPD, I quit smoking about 10 years ago, I have a strong relationship with Mullen.
❤ just like it says in Psalm 104.....plants are for the service of man. Even Ecclesiasticus says "GOD created medicines from the earth, and a sensible person will not hesitate to use them."
Yes! And Ezekiel mentions "Let the fruit be thy food and the leaf be thy medicine" Blessings to you.
6:11 Spoiler Alert
For anybody else watching this AND currently enduring an asthma attack, this is where this wonderful man starts name-dropping herbs !
My dad cured his asthma by taking astragalus root in capsule form. It is an all natural root and is good for your body in many ways but one thing it does is excite and activate your silia in your air way. It makes your coughs more productive. At first you might cough up some nasty stuff but that is normal especially if you are a smoker
Which brand please
I use a mullen, lobelia, ephedra and coltsfoot mix that I make from my garden and honestly I smoke a small amount every night and has done amazing for my asthma ❤❤❤
You smoke it? Wow I’d have thought that would irritate your lungs even more.
@@justinnic849 I'm already a smoker so that makes a difference plus it's the fastest most direct way to get the meds where I need them. Everyone is different and should use what works best for them ☺️
A mild and early intervention that works for me is coffee, the real kind, not instant. It doesn't last long but sometimes settles it down before it gets serious 😊
I can't tell you how grateful I am to you for taking the time to make these videos
I use two preparations. The first is bromelain from pineapple, marshmallow (not the sugary confection, the plant) and mullein. The second is a tincture of osha and lomatium. I’ve had about a 90 percent improvement since I started using herbs. I was on a steroid inhaler before and sometimes had to use 6 or 7 times a day instead of the prescribed two. I think covid got me last November and it was downhill from there.
Covid (delta) in Nov of 2021 really messed up my asthma terribly! I had almost no asthma symptoms at all since I'd been on budesonide for 8 months by then. But c-19 destroyed that. I suffered with weight gain and worsening asthma for 2 1/2 years! In the past couple of months I began taking nattokinase which fixed my lack of self discipline (also due to covid) and began a keto diet (nearly zero carbs) which both improved my asthma. Now I want to get off all asthma meds and grow my own cures in the garden!
Spent years of my life in hospital from asthma. Up until about a year and a half ago I would have the good and bad times of year and burning through inhaler 10-20 puffs a day, however at that point 1.5 years ago I started taking REISHI mushroom tincture foraged locally. Absolute game changer, 2 puffs before bed most days just because my night time breathing is messed up, and that’s it. All my life I struggled with asthma but no more thanks to Mother Nature and a random encounter fishing I am almost free from that curse I thought would have taken me by now at 48.
I love your sense of humor. Your facial expressions remind me of Jonathan Winters. I've always liked him.
I'm a student in your school and I love it! I got into natural medicine because of asthma and my bad reaction to pharmaceuticals. I live on Stinging Nettle and Andrographis to help dry me out. This approach has me off all medications and breathing freely. TY Dr. Jones for stepping out an giving us an education.
Sounds great. Do you take up a tincture?
Man I just found you while watching some EMT stuff on UA-cam and you’re an absolute genius and you’re doing great work. Thank you. My wife has really bad lung issues after having Covid pneumonia a couple years ago, she’s been in bed rest for almost a year due to just not being able to breathe well. I think you might just be who I need to start listening to.
Thank you very much for that! Definitely have to get an elecampane in my medicinal herb garden! Another one of those videos where I wish I could give several thumbs up!
Holy crap! I went to school with a guy named Shane Koyzan. He became a poet. You are his doppelgänger.
Brilliant explanation of asthma, thank you Dr. Jones….
I have chronic asthma and tired of inhalers. Now that I'm older I want off big pharma meds. Will try this methods.
Ditto!!
You are so gifted in being able to tell about how things work. I can see it as you describe. 😊
THANK YOU FOR THIS! This is exactly what I needed for my family. I can’t find the link to that class but I want to take it.
Thanks Doc
Thank you for another learning video. What a pleasure to meet you at the Modern Homestead conference. Appreciate you sitting for hours answering a myriad of questions.
As always Dr. Jones great information. As an asthma sufferer since the age of 12, not telling how old I am now, LOL, I’m going to try this approach with herbs. I’d much rather use them than pharma.
Thank you Dr. Jones for your excellent knowledge!!
love it! Im learning so much from you and sharing with my friends and family.
I often use an inhaler during the winter months. I recently found out that this inhaler really increases my eye pressure and since I have glaucoma which means it's important to keep the eye pressure down or loose more vision, that's a really big drawback. Thanks for alternatives.
thank you DR Jones for sharing your knowledge !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would love a longer video on this topic 💖 thank you Dr. Jones!
Could you have that course in book form also?
@@timleland4787 the lessons in the Homegrown Herbalist School of Botanical Medicine can be downloaded and printed
Thank you for your response
So, how do you recommend taking these herbs? Does a person drink them in tea form during allergy season, or powder them and add them to a smoothy, or the like? Thank you for any information you can share.
Thank you Doc! Much appreciated! Many blessings! 🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕
First time I come across your channel. I subcribed because I truly enjoyed the manner in which you shared the explination of what happens to our lungs when someone is having an asma attack. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I plan to get mullein, but smartweed, which we have wild here, seems to work well for us as a preventative before we do anything intensive in the heat. Problem is that it doesn't seem to work unless it's fresh. So, I'm really hoping a mullein tincture will help in the winter and early spring. Thanks!!!
Hello Doctor, I'm a very big fan of yours, thanks for all your videos and please keep doing it.
Thank you for being great!
West Nile virus -
Hi Doc, love your channel! Thank you for the fantastic info. I read that a study in the in vitro laboratory in the kimron veterinary institute in Israel did a study on elderberry extract and its effects on the West Nike virus and found it eliminated the virus. I’d love to hear your thoughts on that. My elderly father is sick with it and I’m trying everything I know .
Thank you for amazing info. You dont say anything about how to use this herbs🤔that would be nice to know 🤗
Thank you over and over! This is more answers to prayers!
Is it possible to be allergic to any of these herbs?
Th aka for the video Doc!! NOTHING has ever helped my asthma like gumweed.
I've endured FREQUENT asthma attacks for 75 years!
Question:
If I were to make myself just ONE capsule filled with equal portions of the 6 or so herbs you mention about half way, could I keep a little bottle of them in my pocket and swallow one pill to cover a myriad of symptoms or would it do more damage than good?
BTW I have 7 years of college level chemistry under my belt, so I'm pretty adept in the lab
Thanks
Make tinkture. Start with one drop and you will see.
Thank you!
I can't do steroids. And I smoke. I always have algeries. Try mullein but I don't know if I did it right. Drank in dry leaves and smoke some. It help a little but only had a little mullein.
Are your classes online? I’m in Florida, broward county.
Doc, can pets take alcohol tincture? Or, do they have to be made with glycerin?
Can you use hanging lobola?
Hey not sure if your answering these anymore but I'm looking for either a natural form of msm or an alternative to make some combo comfrey salve.
Hello I wanted to find out more about you products. How can I reach someone to discuss your products that I believe might help me
Not related to this video, but can you discuss remedies for fleas on pets? I am fighting a flea battle right now, keeping it controlled but i am really against the poisons and scary stories on internal flea meds. Anything i can do before cracking?
Thank you! 🙏🏻💪🙏🏻
Lobelia is a game changer…!!!!
I’m having good results using homeopathy for my asthma, but I’m excited to have some herbals to consider. I’m wondering if there is a tea version of these that would be good for daily management. Could these herbs be used in a tincture under the tongue for quick relief?
How do you use the herbs,
And if you don't use alcohol or vinegar can you make a tincture?
Hello Dear Doctor ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can you please tell how to heal sjorgen

What do you suggest if someone seemed to have issues with Mullen? Thanks
Are there any specific
Herbs for copd
I doubt you’ll read this, but I have to try!!! I’m goin to takenTeasel tint for sciatica pain and wanted to know how to dose it. I know with your MS patients you titrate the dosage but what about for nerve pain as above? Do I start low and go up or just jump
In and take 1/2 teaspoon to start? Please respond!!
Do you recommend this regime for weaning off Trelegy 100?The loss of bone density is real. My allergist said that she has no knowledge of herbs...I lift weights and am fit. Would like to taper off this med.
Cayenne pepper
I heard that you can use Yucca Root in place of Prednisone. Have you heard of this and would you recommend it?
How about Ephedra tea?
My adrenals are dying because of my steroids and puffers and advair. Now im really sick so im desperate to heal my adrenals and get off my asthma medicines
Is there anything that can help an older cat with kidney failure?
Could these same herbs be used for someone who has a bad cough also?
What about for kids? I’ve got a 5 year old that is hospitalized at least 2x every winter because her asthma is so intense. A basic cold is really hard for her.
My question too which of these herbs are safe for children? I did hear of a study done with Elecampane and marshmallow root that was done with children and they did well. But I am also interested in knowing about using these herbs in children and the safety. I have a four year-old granddaughter with serious asthma. Thank you, Dr. Jones.
What is good for allergic reactions, like for alpha gal?
Is crampbark and hydranga the same plant?
@@2008rmartin Nope. They are completely different species in different families.

Last Comment . . . I promise:
I removed FIBER from my diet three times doing my own albeit "double-blind" study and can confirm this:
Removing all dietary fiber from my diet also removed my long-standing COPD.
Really, really !
What can I do for my dog that seems to have a urinary infection or kidneys. His urine is thick. He eats but grows weaker. He acts like he has to pee and poop at the same time
Try homeopathic remedy Lycopodium D6 5 times a day.
When he improves go for less and less than off.
They push so much medicine through them it’s a sin I’m surprised they still have veins left oh my word so sad
How about epilepsy?
Thank you! Another thing I found out after starting a keto diet was I stopped wheezing. So diet helps too.
I've seen asthma reduce by 90% by eliminating gluten from diet.
A plant based diet too here...
I've had a similar experience recently with keto improving my asthma.
Can't quick smoking. Need help. Please
Do you recommend drinking the herbs as a tea, tinture or capsules?
New subscriber and I already knew about Mullein and learning more. My husband was born with bronchial asthma and has had problems all his life, he's now 65 years young. TY for this video.🙏🏼❤️
Stuff in my lung department: Comfrey Symphytum. Elecampane. Pleursey Root. Mallow(Malva Sylvestrus) Mullein. Holly Hock. Anti spasmodic: Peppermint Stinging Nettle. Expectorant (Bought) Ginger.
And yes I am always planning to plant more.
Is comfrey safe
I take Mullen it works great thank you for your knowledge. I will be using it.
What form do you recommend? Tea, capsules or tincture or something else?
Yes, what form do you use
A warm hello from Northeast Washington! I have a lot of seasonal allergies as well as Urticaria, also known as sun allergy, plus Asthma. I really want to get off the anti-histamine OTC's and Albuterol Rx and be able to work outside without being worried about an asthma attack or breaking out in hives. Thanks to this video, I've learned I already have one of the herbs you mention on hand, Lobelia (tincture) that I've used to help with insomnia sometimes. I also picked a pint jar's worth of Mullein leaves last Spring, but am not sure of the best way to use it. Make a tincture or inhale it? You didn't mention how to take any of the herbs you name in this video. I'd really appreciate your advice about that.
That said, you asked if anyone knew of any other herbs that help with these conditions. I do! Ginger. Yeah, I know. It needs a long growing season. Can't grow it this far north. But you can buy fresh ginger root at most any grocery store and there are YT videos about how to make it. I enjoy making candied ginger for a sweet and sassy treat as well as in cooking and baking, and I know it can also be made into a tincture. I've found chewing just 2 or 3 slices of candied ginger really helps open bronchial airways and fairly quickly, 10-15 mins. This relieves the tightness when it hasn't gone to an all out asthma attack or to prevent one when you have to go to the store and you can't get away from day after day of the smoke because it's fire season.
Doc it is my goal to meander across the border and hang out with you. You are an amazing wealth of information. I appreciate you. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much Doc Jones I have learned a lots on your Videos I’m always watching you God bless. You ,
I love all your lessons, so good!
Question:
My Goldenrod got fuzzy after I washed and dried it, does it still have medicinal value?
Thanks for sharing much appreciated
Wonderful Lesson! Thankful to learn from you! I've had several serious asthma attacks; now I know what to keep on hand. ❤
I had to take my dog to the vet last week. She was blowing bubbles out of one nostril, it was swollen, and she was trying to blow her nose. Doc said it was probably an allergy to something. She gave her prednisone and said she could take Zyrtec. I don't like either of those and prefer not to use them if I don't have to. What could I give her if she gets stuffy again?
When i got sick i researched Nebulize ,...colloidal silver... this worked for me and I made a tent from a shower curtain and nebulized my dogs as well ..
Echinatia and bright eye is safe for cats breathing better i think its safe for dogs a google search should let you know my cat had problems sneezing but dont use stingle nettle on cats he should of said something
Do you find that people with ALLERGIES ,in general, are the majority of those who suffer from asthma?
I've been using thyme, mullin, and sage. I'm mostly triggered by strong scents of all kinds. Perfumes, candles, cleaning supplies
Hi . That was really interesting . Do you dry the nettle for this . Thank you .
I have copd is comfrey safe
Wish I had you for my Dr... I use Thyme n Mullin all time for congestion n sinus ...
Go Dr Jones! Since i took the course i have managed my respiratory problems and quit taking advil cold and sinus. Ephedra is my friend, im raising it up here in Canada, and Mullien and Elecampayne. Keep up the good work. You could add some skullcap or hops for the headaches😀
Excellent information, thank you!
Are you on Instagram?
Are these taken daily or on the onset?

I heard smoking mullein was good. Is it addictive as regular smoking or bad in any way? I wouldn't want to start anything that could be a new issue. P. S. I'm hoping to save up for your online school.
@@cheryl4860 It has no “fun” or addictive properties that Im aware of.
