What is the point of playing the Exchange French against a Master? You honor a Master by bringing your BEST GAME, even at the Risk of Defeating Him!!! You are insulting him if you don't!!! Playing the Exchange French and Defecating upon the Chess Board are one in the same!!!
it is because after Bb5, black will be able to play c6, and the bishop will have to retreat back to Bd3 or Be2, etc. In this way they transpose back into a more standard exchange french setup, with black castling kingside, and playing Knf6 and such, except with a tempo up, as white was forced to move a piece twice in the opening for no benefit. This allows black to seize the initiative a move earlier, and although it is not necessarily terrible for white, it is generally not preferable.
