    I can relate here. I’m 41 and seeking an age waiver. Kinda scared I won’t be allowed to join due to that. I’ll give this personal perspective: I don’t want to regret not having this opportunity. I have similar cons on my side, but you get one time down here. Fill your life with what you can.

      MEPS wanted to see me off of a medication for 3yrs. By then, I’ll be 44. So, as bad as I wanted to, it looks like I won’t be able.

    Man. I'm sitting freshly at 33 and considering CG Reserves. I have gone through several stages of "that's crazy" to "nah do it" to "I'm late - I should have done this at 25" to what you said at 9:14 to 9:50.
    This video is a big help. Appreciate your insight, encourages me to set the doubt aside and at least explore options.

      Wanted to come back here and post an update for anyone else who finds this video.
      I ended up joining the CG Auxiliary. I looked into joining the reserves, even talked to a recruiter. For my situation, the AUX makes more sense at the moment, than going active. There's a ton of things you can do as an Auxiliarist (including some really awesome adventurous stuff). I will be seeing you all out there as soon as I get through the background check and get some quals checked off!
      It's easy to write off the AUX because it's "volunteer" and "unpaid," but where else are you going to be able to do CG stuff like this? Awesome organization.

      Ben, I enlisted as full-time active duty at 35. I went through boot camp at 35, served underway, and was stationed at Sector New Orleans. I did my four years and got out. I work for the federal government now.

    It's not the same but there is an alternative for those past the age cut off. The USCG Auxiliary. It may not fulfill all those that desire the full CG experience but it can get you close enough. It certainly will take you as far as you want to go. I have served in various areas during my time. From the USCG Academy, The Texas Border to participating in container inspections. ATON/PATON verification as well. There are many opportunities available. Albeit volunteering, but quite the experience you wont have in the other armed forces.

    Maybe I can't relate much at 24, I thought my chance to get in had passed me. (I tried to enlist in the army at 20 but was sent back home) Some of my co-workers have told me I should try and get a waiver and write my congressman. After weeks of gathering the documents I need I've started the process with the coast guard. Best answer I can give is that if you want to do it, Go for it. The best time is the present time. I hear alot of the coast guard are Prior service and/or older applicants.

    I have a question bout the schedule while in boot camp I’m sure it changes depending on the mood of the cc’s and mistakes made by the recruits but can you describe what a day is like from wake up to lights out example when you wake up do you go straight to breakfast first or shower how many hours is spent in classroom vs doing pt and is it like school where you do multiple classes a day or is it day by day learning a new subject

    • @CGCareerCentral
      @CGCareerCentral  Рік тому

      It varies week to week. I'll do a video on this topic. But generally, it's a pretty good balance between classes and PT. Once you get into the thick of training you actually spend most of your day in the classroom.

      Hmm that's an interesting question. I've got an ME coming on the channel soon, I'll make sure to ask him that question.
      Do you have documentation for receiving it before? If you do, that might suffice. However, I don't know for sure so I'd try to clarify that with a recruiter. But I'll ask the ME I know and get back to you.

      @@bradleybeemer9304 ahh, yeah I was afraid that was going to be the answer. The Coast Guard is generally really particular about meeting requirements through them specifically. We have to get an HIV blood draw every two years and it has to be through their contractor; having it done by your primary care physician won't suffice.

      If you have a memo from one of your previous employers stating that you received a full face exposure, you will not be required to be exposed to OC at ME A School.

      Is there a big difference in a PSU to other types of units?

    • @CGCareerCentral
      @CGCareerCentral  Рік тому

      PSUs are a lot more self sufficient in that they have their own Command, and all their requirements are done from within (medical, dental, all training, etc). Most other units are part of a broader unit (Base, Station, Sector, etc) that they go through to get things done. PSUs are essentially fully self sufficient.
