I put off running and working out to do stuff like play videogames, my job, etc. But when I decided to go back, I put the time in at the gym, I would go twice a day, and all I did was pushups, sit ups, and run the 1.5 mile, trying to do it faster each time. I didn't go every day, but it's staying motivated when it counts. That feeling I had when I ran the 1.5 under the required time was amazing. If he puts in genuine effort he'll be just fine. If I were to go back and join the Merchant Navy again, I would join Shell or BP straight off the bat, get LNG tanker experience and get steam qualified so I could take that qualification and possibly go to the Waverley or something like that.
Cruise ships did let me see a lot of fun places, but it was a very high stress job and didn't do my mental health any good.
As for buying a house, it's a shame I didn't have a crystal ball in 2008, because I would have saved thousands of pounds if I had waited until after the bubble burst to buy my first house.

TSP is a long term savings plan for military and government employee's. You get matching funds, and there's a chance to build a substantial savings over a lifetime of service either in the service, or, if you go to a civilian Federal government job. Even if you don't intend to stay in the CG or the Military, definitely contribute to TSP savings, it's well worth it. Also, it's VA loans

Another benefit of going cutter first is the amount of rates available to see as a non-rate. That will help you choose your career path. Another benefit is getting your cutter quals done. You DC, GPOW and other quals are very transferrable from cutter to cutter. If not directly transferable, your prior experience will certainly speed up the qual process. Plus you already got the feel for it and know how to survive and thrive underway. Nobody looked at me twice when I came back to a white hull as an E5 after being on one as a non-rate.

Chaleida, a lot of that will have to do with your rating (job specialty). Certain ratings have a higher chance of getting afloat billets, others have a higher chance of ashore billets.

3 things about the coast guard:
1.) I've never met a Coast Guard Recruiter
2.) Unlike other branches it's training is the most top secret.
3.) Is it mostly white, kind of like the Yale/ Harvard of the military wherein you have to no someone to get "selected to join"???😅
