I don't know why in America the Anthology is so expensive. In Poland for example you can get it for 440zł (~120$) and I've also heard that in Germany you can get it for ~100€ (~117$).
@@admiralcasperr Because precon decks are highly underrated in these areas. The local shops often buy them for display. I have just ordered mine for 135$ in Ukraine - thankfull to this awesome review, supporting my local magic community, just as said ;)

Just the fact you can get a majority of the staples for Ghave and a few other really good competitive commanders. The fact that it's pure value for roughly $175 after tax makes it worthwhile.

ooze is a 2011 deck still good up to this date. Breed Lethality wont be underpowered in a near futur for sure neither. And at worst, I switch it to an infect deck and it becomes even more op

WARNING : as seen at 6:26 , the tokens ARE NOT in the corresponding decks ! I think this is quite important and I am quite surprised it was not mentioned in the video.
It's probably intentional so speculators cannot grab up the boxes and resell them unopened, but it does suck a bit for someone who has say 1 of the 4 already but really want the other 3.
As a player who wasn’t in the format when these precons came out I love this anthology and I’ll take about wade into battle because urzas Incubator is high price lol. And I was never gonna pay 200plus for breed lethality but my favorite deck in this box is the daretti scrap secant deck. I love the synergy

I've realized that all I need to do is buy the Commander set every year. It's by far WOTC's most valuable pre-con product. Spending approx $150 once a year is enough for me to enjoy the game.

Unless they bring out Brawl pre-cons and they have the same level of quality in terms of the deck list (which might be impossible while subjected to the standard rotation) I will only buy Commander decks and upgrade singles.

Challenger decks are subject to rotating out rather quickly and aren't singleton decks. Constructing a viable singleton deck with only the standard legal cards is a totally different thing.

Bought it just for Devour and Daretti. Getting a second Atraxa certainly doesn't hurt especially with the new gorgeous frame, and the second Kalemne deck makes for a great gift. All in all I feel it's well worth the price especially if you get a nice deal well under MSRP!

Loved the first anthology. And loving this one! Bought it for $175 only to see the price go to about $155 after release, and I'm not even mad about that. So much value in here and a ton of awesome cards in this set.
I remember buying first commander anthology, and it was so much worth it, not only financially but also in terms of fun we had with it. But now that I already own 2 of those decks , and only want Breed Lethality, it's such a pain to pay half the price of vol.2 just to get this one deck :(( I really hoped price would go much more down with this one

I'm buying it with 3 friends. It will cost me about 40$ for breed lethality. 40$ my brother for Devour of Power and we even found two guys for the two others XD. So yeah, its a lot of money, but if your friends are interested, it drops the cost up to a quarter and it makes a good (right out of the box) competition

Every day, I am happier and happier I blew my chore money on the Atraxa commander deck when it first came out, even though I didn't know how to play commander at all. I just thought it looked cool.

Bought this a few months ago as my introduction to Magic for me and my girlfriend, the day they came out The value of the cards were unreal.
I didn't know Wormcoil Engine was that much! And it's become my favorite card too!

For me, Commander Anthology is always worth it since each deck is already $40 on its own and the Commander Anthology is only $160

I think this year's anthology was made for me. I missed out on a derreti deck and I was pissed I never got breed lethality and I was actually thinking of building a mimeoplasm deck. For me this is a grade A. Picked mine up at my local game store for my countries msrp which is comparable to the USA msrp.
I didn't even know a new Anthology was on the way when my LGS posted a photo of this coming in stock. Went and got one right away and sleeved them all up in Eclipse.
Have some friends just getting into Magic and this is the perfect product!
This price, in retrospect with comparison to UMA, is reasonable.

A friend of mine picked this up and we sleeved up and played the decks straight from the box. It was a ton of fun playing all the decks and we've rotated through them several times. I know he's planning on slowly upgrading them. I personally have all four of the decks already but if I had the funds I would definitely have picked this up! A great product.

the atraxa deck is by far more powerful but the other three are relatively close in power
ambroise beaucaire they're balanced ish, the daretti and the Giants deck are on par, as well as devout for power and atraxas deck being on the same level, but the latter two both out class the former
Unless the other three more or less treat Atraxa as the Archenemy, expect Atraxa to run away with most games. Once that’s out of the way, the other three are mostly similar in power level.
atraxa isn't that much stronger than mimeoplasm imo. in the 10+ games i've played so far, it was pretty even between those two. kalemne is definitely the weakest out of the 4.
daretti is the most fun to play though imo, because of all the stuff you can do on your turn once you get going.
Worth noting that for EU players, you can find the indivdual decks on Cardmarket for close to MSRP (Breed Lethality is selling for 38€ right now).
I think you're understating the convenience factor of having all of these decks preconstructed. Add that into the time machine surcharge maybe. But yeah, I'm in the UK and there isn't really an equivalent to TCGPlayer or the like, where you can easily get hold of *every* single you need to build a deck *in one place*. I usually end up using two or three different sites, including eBay, so yeah, there's definitely a convenience factor to products like this.
I'm just a amazed how this video respond to all my doubts, it covers everything about the product and what each different person might want of it.

As an LGS owner, I am still working at 11 P.M. at night doing MTG related things. From consults about EDH decks to just stocking old binders (or my specifically designed in house EDH binders, 1 per color) my day can run long. I watch videos like this because I want to be able to give honest answers to my players about what products are the best for their budget.
I say all of that to give context to this: I literally cannot thank you enough for your ending on these videos. I was a player long before I was an LGS owner, and in the past year I have gained a wealth of knowledge about how hard it is to keep the MTG community healthy and whole (something, something, 5 standard bannings, something). That little bit at the end of your video means warms my heart at the end of a long day, so thank you very much for that.

Your prices are either way off, or Europe just has a fraction of the US prices.
Caged Sun is 2,99€, Deepglow Skate is 2,49, Ruy Medallion is 2,75, thought vessel is 2,31€, eternal witness is 3,4€, Reliquary tower is 1,5€ .... and so on.
Atraxa is 11,95€, Fiery Confluence is 14€, Wurmcoil is 10,50€, Urza's incubator is 5,49, ....
The whole Set of Commander Anthology II costs 103,89 €.

Well I got to buy it for 105€ (that's ~123$) with shipping cost and package tracking included. Was surprised to hear that they send it out for like 165$. Lucky I bought online from a private seller, or my greedy "let's abuse or monopoly on the area as hard as possible" LGS would have pushed up the price to what as well might translate close to or above 200$. Not sure how THAT guy then got it so cheap that he could sell if off more than 40$ below MSRP... Not complaining tho. If this was already A minus at the "normal price", with this it is probably a solid A+. Can't wait until we open it up tomorrow. We are 4 people who threw together on this box and for three of them those will be their very fist commander decks...
It's interestingly the first appearance of a flip card in the M15 border. Check out the new printing of Nezumi Graverobber, it looks pretty funky.
Honestly, I don't have a problem with them printing Wade into Battle in this anthology. Blade of Selves, an equipment that was only ever printed in that deck, is both very expensive and very difficult to reprint, since it uses a mechanic that's only ever been seen once and that refers to multiplayer specifically. That card alone isn't worth the value of a precon deck (even though it might be one day), so they shoved that deck in with three decks of good to amazing financial value. If the anthology had been the same price for the three decks plus Blade of Selves, it would be about the same from a value perspective, but this way we get another deck as well.
I picked up Anthology II mostly for the two oldest decks, since I didn't play Magic yet in 2011 and... didn't want to prioritize buying mono-colored decks in 2014-2015. (Mistake!)
That said, both of the other decks have a bunch of great cards I'll certainly want extra copies of, and I might just help a friend who's new to Magic assemble a deck of his own.
Interestingly, I'm buying this for all of them EXCEPT *Breed Lethality* . I've had to "entice" someone to go 75:25 with me (which, you know, it's Breed Lethality, not exactly much persuading needed).
Answer: No
Nothing in magic is worth buying. If you dont have a deck, buy A SINGLE deck. Then upgrade that deck. This is truthfully the cheapest way to have a great magic experience. Play your buddies decks until you know what you like then make one yourself. And yes, eventually you might have 3 decks but I personally lose interest quick when I stray from my core deck. Even just buying the two most expensive cards from each deck is cheaper than buying their bulk of throw away cards. Besides, he keeps talking about MSRP, but what really matters is RESALE value, which is worse than half your money back for cards you wont play and that you might possibly damage then get even worse value on
Did it for all but the giant deck. Speaking of these decks though, anyone got any advice for playing against "Made from scratch" (Daretti, Scrap Savant) deck? My friend is playing it and it feels like I never get to keep a field (INCLUDING LANDS) because of all the removal in there. With bitter feud and any global/near-global effects he can pay about 3-6 mana whenever I start to build back up my forces or when I replay my commander to just wipe my field back to nothing. So much of the deck also has artifact removal which means the mana rocks in the precons are worthless after a turn or two when against it.
I preordered mine at my LGS before the decks had been announced for $125 and have not regretted it even a tiny bit. I didn't own any of the precons yet, and plan to play at least three of them a bit as they are before disassembling them for parts, particularly looking to bring them to my LGS's commander nights to let my local player base upgrade their generals to their shiny newness. My brother's already looking to bling out his Daretti deck.

What about the FUN aspect of this decks? are they balanced and fun to play against each other, or is there a deck that will win or loose more often than not???
This are the kind of things that can't be glanced over. If I'm forking over $165 for a board game, it better be a damn fun board game. Ho cares if I'm getting back my money's worth? I'm already spending it on cardboard.
Woah, I just bought Breed Lethality in English on Ebay (sealed in box with the oversized Atraxa) for $75 with free shipping. Don't pay $225 for it, that's lunacy.

I have 2 of the 4.... can I justify the price of this thing for the 2 missing decks, when I already have most of the cards in each that aren't commander specific... :-( Just the missing singles from Atraxia's deck would run me almost 2.3 the price. :-P
You know, the box being so large isn't necessarily a bad thing. I bought the first commander anthology and the planechase anthology, and i use the boxes as storage for my fairly sizable collection of decks. If you pull out the plastic they can fit various sizes of deck boxes in them, including 80 card BCW's, 100 card ultra pro's, and some other stuff. Not useful for everyone, but something to consider.
Bought this at 170$ CAD taxes included at my lgs. I split the decks with one of my friend. Ended up paying 85$ for for the Atraxa and the Daretti decks. Well worth my money I think!
This video really annoyed me for two reasons.
1) Why refer to the original recommended retail price of the product? There is no point. It should not even be a consideration, as the only valid price to review, is the current price of the decks. There is no such thing as a time machine, so why are you suggesting a 25 dollar surcharge exists?
2) You talk about how good the value of the product is, pointing how much the customer receives in additional value, then you have the nerve to suggest that WotC have "as usual" watered down the product. Although it's fair to say that they have balanced it out, by putting less valuable/desirable decks alongside Breed Lethality, for goodness sakes Prof, you can't have it both ways! Why not just congratulate Wizards, on giving us good value for a change? Would you have rather they packaged four decks of equal value together and not included Breed Lethality? I doubt it.
I was actually thinking about buying this because it looked to have a LOT of good cards I wanted, but I quickly and sadly realized how big of a mistake it would have been since I don't play Commander.
As someone fresh to MTG and coming from multiple other TCGs, one of the hardest things to grasp is MTGs many formats and what cards are and aren't allowed in every format.
Good for balancing purposes but take a while to get used to
You're forgetting the effect inflation has on that time machine fuel ;p (not sure if the nice spin downs come with the duel deck anthology which go for £3-4 online). I think it's also hard to compare based on MSRP as some of these didn't stay at MSRP for long (Atraxa had spiked above MSRP very early in the preorder period) Plus if you have any of the decks you can do what I did and trade in/sell the high value cards from the decks to pay towards the anthology. I did that with my Kalemne deck. Got to sell a few high value cards to pay towards a lot of the cost and I still have all the lands etc. From the original deck
We use our first commander anthology big box to store 16 commander decks, lovely to bring out when we have guests (normally with 1-2 of their own) and roll a d20 to decide who plays what deck. Get to experience decks you wouldn’t normally try and keeps it fresh!
With inflation from 2011 & 2014 factored in, the mrsp of these decks today would be more like $150-155 (westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi)
It's frustrating that WotC does backhand schenanigans when doing reprints. There is an extreme demand for Breed Lethality, but if one wants it, one has to pay for 3 other usually unwanted decks in addition to paying for Breed Lethality. Why can't WotC just give its customers what they want. I'm sure many people are interested in Breed Lethality but are unwilling to pay for 4 decks just to get it.
My LGS has the set on sale for Memorial Day for $130.00, plus tax. When divided amongst my three friends we all payed the 35 dollar MSRP. So I mean I guess I got the time machine for free.
I WISH they'd reprinted chronologically, I only missed the first Commander set. I'm glad these products are getting a reprint, no one should pay that much to play good decks, Anthology boxes are freaking ridiculous though..
So, the price tag was a little steep for me irregardless of whether or not it is good value...so many other things I know I should be spending my money on....To solve that problem, I put it on my b-day list (yes, I am grown and I keep a b-day list cuz my family loves not having to think about what to get me). Got it for my b-day! #winning XD
Those "perks" you speak of: Are they even perks or downsides?So you commander foil, that weren't before. But you don't get those commander in non-foil, that were foil before. You will not get tournament legal cards, because the warp as hell and they look bad to boot.
Don't know why they bother having/advertising an MSRP when it seems like local game stores tend to scalp products with this high of value.

I had breed lethality when it released ... That being said I'm not likely going to buy it but if I had to replace it I definitely would consider this as an option... Atraxa is incredibly powerful... I know everyone's diving into this for Breed Lethality for the most part, but I reeeeaaally hope a few folks pick up Built From Scratch and find the same love for it that I have. Its my favorite precon to this day, Commander or otherwise, and I still keep a stock copy around for players new to Commander to sit down with. Its an absolute joy to play, has a pretty low barrier to entry and a high skill cap. Couldn't possibly ask for more, and I'm super excited to see a foil Daretti and Feldon.
I feel like Wade into Battle doesn't get enough recognition given that 3 of the 10+ dollars cards are from that deck (Fiery Confluence, Urza's Incubator and Blade of Selves)
Not sure it's fair to accuse WOTC of 'watering down' when the worst value is still a $50 deck with plenty of value in it. Not to mention this helps with the color balancing of the set (which I think is important, but maybe it's not?)
I got my set at 5% under MSRP for preordering at my LGS. Definitely worth. I got it for all 4, even though I have a copy of Breed Lethality, the new legendary frames are nice.
I feel less anxious about jumping on this as soon as I saw a pre-order. I picked up the first set and loved it. I was able to get parts, I kept two together as loaner decks, and I game one to my GF because I had it already. I think I'll probably end up doing something similar with these. Plus I've been debating on splurging for Atraxa and now I don't really have to. Win win.
I did pick up Breed Lethality at MSRP and have already purchased it just for the other decks. Worth it in my mind, financially and just for gameplay.
Just got my playset of foil Daretti for my legacy Daretti Spaghetti Caleb Durward special :) pretty pumped for this anthology just for one card lol

I have this bought this a few weeks ago and played some games with them with by friends straight out of the box.
But every time the others don't want to play built from scratch because they feel like its the worst. So I keep playing it so everyone is happy. what is your opinion? are these evenly matched? and if not, what changes can i make to improve the not so strong decks?
(sorry for possible English mistakes, i'm from the Netherlands and my English isn't the best)
Interestingly enough, I got my copy of Devour for Power for about 30eur from a greek dealer last year and also a copy of Daretti's for the same cost as a gift for a friend. Which essentialy remarks the difference between Eur and USA markets
I'd like to split one with my friends here if my FLGS still has them. I really want the Daretti deck but I know that if I try to split the deck with them, everyone will want to pass on the Boros one. They're just like that. They did the same thing with the Derevi one when I tried to split an anthology 1 with them (I wanted Kaalia)... Still a good thing they're printing this though!

Print quality on mtg product has been subpar for a while especially on foils. Has this been resolved and is Commander Anth 2 card quality better? I don't want to spend money on subpar quality

Fun fact: In europe you'll never get them for MSRP but much higher prices and thanks to the market not beeing dominated by a few online shops, lower overall secondmarket prices, it changes a lot about beeing worth the money or not.
You should also note that people are selling these individually at a very moderate price. Where I live these go for about 50$/deck, and I bought breed lethality for about 46$.
To The Professor. Your videos teach me alot, I managed to find a sealed Japanese Atraxa deck from my local Walmart, was wondering if there would still be any potential financial value there?
I was very tempted to pick this up at first, but really sitting down and thinking about it the only commander i would really build with is the mimeoplasm so really it would be better just to build my own deck than to buy an old un-upgraded pre-con and a bunch of other commander decks i probably won't use. This is a good value though. if they had switched Kalemne out for something more worthwhile i might have picked it up
I mainly bought the anthology for the atraxa atraxa and mimeoplasm decks. Although considering mirrordin is when i started playing magic as a kid the bosch iron golem and the wurmcoil engine from when we revisited that plane are nice nostalgic pickups for my burgeoning commander collection. The boxes are ridiculously oversized but quite pretty so i took out the wasteful plastic spacers and use the anthology v1 and v2 boxes to house large parts of my collection in deckboxes like a sort of board game i can crack open when people i can entice into playing or trying out commander come over which i think has some small added value.
I don't use UA-cam often, but I frequently find myself using your videos to help inform my MTG purchases. Thanks a ton.
