The smell is NOT bad at all, but it's distinct.
As already mentioned Barbour thornproofs don't keep you warm, the waxed fabric conducts the cold through to the inside of the coat the same as it conducts heat through on a warm day as the sun heats the fabric up, they are superb long lived jackets if looked after correctly, a lot of people don't understand thornproofs need to be reproofed fairly regularly, but they can be repaired over and over again, in the end you finish up with a jacket a bit like Triggers broom!!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely rely on my Border jacket. I have a long torso and it really helps keep the rain and wind off of me. It is long, but not too long (not a fan of “duster” style jackets and the Border avoids that look while staying classic Barbour)!
I recently got my first Beaufort and I love it. The Beaufort does have an inside pocket of sorts, it has a vertical zip between the main zip and storm flap.
Love my Ashby wax jacket. Have had it a few years and it's still giving sterling service. I've long since forgotten how much I paid for it, but it's been worth every single penny. Good design never goes out of style.

No more smell anymore on all Barbour Wax jackets /products!!! Barbour took away it's own DNA. I still can not believe that. The typical Barbour Wax scent was a hugh character of their products. Now it's a neutral "nothing".
@mxt mxt oh, the Pound is much weaker than that. Due to the fact that Barbour is based in the UK, they cost considerably less than overseas, especially across the pond.
I worked at Barbour from 2016-2018 and i learned so much from about the aftercare. The most popular was the Ashby & woman’s beadnell ( soho location ) i still wear my gilet under most of my coats
Totally worth it. High standard of craftmanship, made for hunting and fishing. Tough enough to protect against brambles and thorns and should you rip it on barbed wire it can be repaired and they can easily be reproofed.
Another nice video! I love my bedale with the special printed lining of the barbour fisherman. I rewax it by myself every autumn. I like doing this work. I deed the sleeves are a little short, so I had to send it in the factory for extending the length. I have to say that the wet look it does not last for very long but the waterproof abilities are not lost. I do not think it is possible to wear it over a tweed jacket due to the storm protection sleeves. By the way, very nice cords!
24 years later, my Bedale is still my go to and just getting broken in. Aside from the fact that it smells like a tent, it's a jacket I will always own if this one ever wears out. I have an emotional relationship with it, like an old friend.
I got my Beaufort in 1989 and it’s still going strong. I’ve added to the collection since then, the hooded lightweight Durham really is superb. A tip I use is to restore the way it looks after I’ve been cutting trees and hedgerows is to hang it up and go over it with a hairdryer.
This way melts part of the wax layer to cover up scratches. I normally would be carefull, as to not melt too much, leaving a spot with less water resistance, but barbour has a thick enough layer of wax, so it wouldn't make much of a difference.
I originally wanted to have a bedale, because of the reasons you mentioned. The store me and my mom went to buy it at had sadly ran out of the bedale. They still had the beaufort, so we decided to buy it as an early birthday present for me, because I needed it at the time. I quickly fell in love with the large poacher pocket as a storage space for my gloves and scarf. When I visited england with my class, I was once again glad to have the pocket to protect my maps and the gloves I purchased there.
I’ve got the Barbour International - a great option that you showed in a pic (Steve McQueen) but didn’t include for consideration. Had it tailored for a slimmer more modern fit 👍
I used to live in South Shields not far from Barbour , I have owned one or two Barbour waxed jackets from the 1980s on here are the good points GOOD POINTS It is a true Heritage brand that simply never goes out of style/fashion They are really well made and no matter how much abuse you give them they can be "redeemed and or repaired back to good as new " They are really waterproof ..really ..(provided you rewax every year or two depending on the type of use and climate you use them in ) You can easily rewax them yourself no problem which saves money AND makes you invest more in your coat as YOU have personally maintained and looked after it so to speak . They age wonderfully , full of character that develops to you and your body over years of use . They are expensive but they literally last you a lifetime (with maintenance as required ) 50 years plus is quite common Barbours and even then they don't look dated the classic designs are almost ageless. BAD POINTS They are heavy ..just heavy they don't hold water or anything they are just a heavy jacket right off the rail . They don't seal well around the neck area in a rainstorm I usually wear ashort scarf to stop water ingress around the neck area which in truth is badly designed one size fits all kind of deal. They smell very strongly when new and rewaxed but ony for a while personally I don't mind the smell as it's not that unpleasant and is a reminder of what I am wearing . They are uselss in really cold conditions even with the optional furry col;d weather liners that can be press stud fitted and removed , yes they stop wind chill dead in it's track be they have no lofting ability or snow skirt to stop the wind just whistling straight up you body and robbing you of warmth . They are just way to warm to wear in any condition that requires even walking up a hill or such ( by warm I mean they make you perspire as they are absolutely NOT breathable in any way ) even when not fastened on a moderate 9 degree celcius day you will sweat if you are walking even over moderate terrain or in a shopping Mall . If you want one of the Barbours go for it it's a great product but my modern down jackets or waterproof goretex style outdoor gear is far far more usefu and everyday wear than any Barbour I own . there is a reason skiers , mountain climbers , snow sports etc do not wear barbours doing these endevours but Barbour waxed jackets definately have a place in the outdoors and street wear situations albeit somewhat limited .
Due to its concealed nature, the Beaufort's rear pocket was originally designated as a "poachers' pocket" but as a result of the negative and illegal nature of term the pocket has recently been called by other names.
Very good review. I have a Bedale, Beaufort, Beacon & the Union Jack int. Absolutely love them because they’re practical & stylish. TBH you don’t have to break the bank! If you find a used Barbour in good condition all you have to do is re-wax & it will look like new. I’d be surprised if you found a ripped one because Barbour are very durable jackets.
Thanks for the in depth review of the Barbour lineup, their products are class on another lever. If you want a similar look, a wax blend exists that you can apply to your jacket and it will last longer than traditional wax blends.
Awesome review, I just ordered an Ashby and a beaufort, waiting for them to arrive! I love the Gentleman's Gazette and I frequently recommend this channel.
I’ve had my Beaufort for 35 years and just had it it re-waxed by Barbour US a few months ago. Looks brand new now. Getting 3 decades past jacket is a good ROI
Got my dads Bedale that he got for himself at least 25 years ago or so, it is BY FAR the best jacket that I ever had and probably will ever have. Nothing compares to it. Absolutely nothing. I sadly ripped it though, need to see if it is repairable somehow, if not im still gonna wear it on non-rainy days. I love it.
Been wearing Barbour since I was 15 I’m now 49 just bought Barbour winter dress tartan shirt & ladies sweater with tartan elbow patches a Barbour hat & Barbour scarf I love Barbour
I have the Beaufort for the extra length, to cover a jacket as described in the video. "Hot" tip; That rear game pocket makes a great pouch for one of those microwaveable heat pads, to keep the lower back warm if standing around for long periods outside.
30 years ago I asked an English colleague what he thought about Barbour jacket. He told me, its like range rover, an amazing tool for the countryside and rain. Since then I bought the first jacket and 4 years ago the, second one. Also for my sons. We love this jacket, it will last for lifetime.
Just got the Bedale from Amazon for $240. I first ordered the same size as my suit jacket (40R) and the Bedale was simple to big around my body. I could fit a small child inside the jacket. I ordered a 38 and it fits perfectly. I’m a relatively thin guy (5’9”, 180lbs) and I suggest if buying online to size down on the Bedale and Beaufort.
As most Barbour aren't made in the UK anymore, I've gone with Oxford Blue and their Chelsea Waxed coat. Material sourced from Scotland and made in England (very happy with it)
I love my Barbour wax jacket, it is really durable and works really well in different environments ranging from wearing it in the city, at our ranch, when I go fishing etc. Totally worth it!
The Ashby is NOT the only slim option! I have the Bristol, which is kind of a slimmer version of the Beaufort with longer arms. Fits perfectly on my slimmer build. The Beaufort looks like a tent on me...
I have my Barbour jackets for over a decade and those still look like new - maybe not my Chalsea but compared to other quilted jacket I own it does not fall appart. So 👍 for quality and function.
The best Barbour coat IMO is the Northumbria with the wool lining and game pockets; I bought one in Pitlochry 30 years ago, re-waxed it several times myself, recently had some factory repairs, added the leather trim bits, and it is going strong.
I have a Bedale which I got about 10 years ago when I was 30. I like the more modern silhouette but the shorter length means it can’t be worn over tailoring. In retrospect I probably should have gotten the Beaufort and maybe sized down a size to get a trimmer look. In any event they are great jackets that will last forever.
go with barbour since '83 and love it! i am 6'5 my favourite is the northumbria. i have four in case ww3 comes around. i used to wear the border also. value and quality top notch
Gazillion bucks worth it!!! I have both the Beaufort & the Ogston...and they're awesome. Versatile, timeless, and can wear anytime. It'll last you for years.
I have a Barbour International Weir jacket. It's a great jacket with lots of little thoughtful touches. I also have a Baracuta G9 which I got in the January sales for £185. I thought that was a lot for a Harrington jacket at the time never mind the usual price of £295. I wear it a lot on my days off and I love it. I have changed my mind and would recommend it to anyone even at £295. I'm looking forward to your video on them.
Gary Taylor I have the G4 , I prefer the straight waist . I have a heavy jacket but I feel it was a waste as the Harrington is the best all round jacket Iv ever owned .
I've been wearing Beauforts for 20 years. My standard 'uniform' is Barbour and jeans. I buy a new one every four to five years. The last one is relegated to rougher wear like picking up timber and the third for even rougher like gardening and going on the roof in a storm say to clear the outlet. The poacher pocket is really useful for gloves and hats so you don't lose them indoors plus a ready plastic bag for anything at all. I've never rewaxed but I must try that. They are a blessing if it torrents down and you are out walking in freezing weather.
I was in Edinburgh 15 years ago and came across a Barbour store that had a rack full of Beauforts on sale for $175. I grabbed one on the spot, and wear it all the time, including for hunting. It still looks as good as the day I bought it, maybe better since it's well broken in. With reasonable care, they never wear out.
Great jackets for outdoor pursuits, big enough for layering for different seasons, the more wax you put on them ,less breathable they are, two way zip is a great bonus . One of mine is over 35 years old and still great cond, been back to barbour once for a repair. Luckily still fits as I bought a size up many years back, the older ones ,classic have a eight to ten inch chest tolerance for layering and for when lifting arms up ,fishing, shooting, horse riding. Newer slim styles are not the same as original.
I used to work in a gunshop in Windsor England back in the 80s and sold the bedale and gamefair coats for £50. The bedale was favoured by women especially the navy blue version. Quite expensive but affordable back then as opposed to stupidly pricey now. My advice, buy secondhand on any facebook buying and selling pages. I brought a virtually brand new Gamefair for £35
Best gift I ever got was a Barbour Beacon heritage that rivals my Filson, my Barbour is mainly used for hardwearing fall time, the Jacket doesn’t see coffee shops and urban use, in Montana it’s been hunting, FTXs, horseback, calfing, fencing, etc, extremely beat up and still does its job, it seems to look better the more worn in it gets.
Great vid comparing 3 very popular jackets that people will be deciding between. Myself included - I bought the Beaufort a few months ago and I love it. A few additional things worth mentioning: - the Beaufort does actually have something equivalent to an "inside" pocket: it's a vertical zipped pocket between the main zipper and the flap. I prefer it because it's more secure than the velcro ones (i.e. has complete closure). - the rear game pouch is huge and can be used for anything you like. I've put a laptop in there, some random shopping, an umbrella etc. - there is often a clear quality difference between the jackets made in England and those made abroad. On the foreign-made ones the cord lapels are thinner, and stitching is rough in some places. Which I find unfortunate since they are still quite expensive, and Barbour does a lot of marketing about its British heritage.
Iestyn It should have Made In England printed on the label by the neck. I think the Bedale, Beaufort, and Border are still made in England. The others are made throughout Europe.
Had my solway zipper since 1992..... discontinued in 97 i think, it has been re-proofed several times and still looks good.... sadly these are now more fashion items rather than the functional farm wear mine has been used for. Good points are sturdy construction, large pockets, good zipper and fasteners and it can be sent back for repairs if required....bad points are not really waterproof and suffer from condensation if you do anything resembling physical activities... they also deposit the wax on furnishings and car seats and develop a rather distinctive smell that means mine has to sleep in the garage....
spot on review. i too found the bedale's sleeves way too short. also the button holes inside the collar were annoying. but for a high quality jacket made in england the value for money is outstanding.
I live close to the factory and the factory shop in southshield, they do 70% discounts. Also sell one off samples. I think they are made in southshields, england, which is rare!!!
I've got a black Barbour sapper wax jacket (paid £220 in the UK) that's about 8 years old now and in need of some repairs and a re-proofing. Best money I ever spent!
You dont need to completely reproof it every year, not even using it on a daily basis, but a maintenance on heavy rubbing zone, like sleeves is Paramont to avoid creases, cracks asn damages.
I've got the Barbour International Delta. Somewhere between a modern parka and a traditional wax jacket. It's hard wearing, stylish, warm and absolutely worth it.
The Bedale and the Beaufort are the only mens Barbour jackets that are made in England. When I bought mine last year I couldn't decide on the Ashby or the Bedale so I ended up ordering both. I can tell you the Bedale is much nicer quality and I'll have it for the rest of my life.
They’re much cheaper to buy in the here in the uk. Love Barbour, they’re excellent quality. If they break they’ll fix it for you and even send you some material of lines they don’t do anymore if you need to fix them yourself.
I had one (can't remember the model) for many years for horse riding. They are great, quite warm, wind- and waterproof and durable. The zip-on hood is very useful for riding, because it zips off in case your hood gets stuck on a branch. Once I almost got pulled off the horse at such occasion while wearing a jackett with a fixed hood. Only downside to Barbour jackets is the fact you have to renew the wax from time to time, which is quite expensive and tedious.
And since I’ve been thrilled with my Barbour international jacket, I have purchased three more for family, and every one of them is fantastic… One from the Barbour vest collection and two Barbour international coats.. One that is a longer down parka and the other is a hooded waxed cotton jacket… These are for women… And they love them. They look great, they are high-quality, and now they can throw away the other garbage that’s stuck in the closet.

How'd you go about getting the sleeves lengthened? I'd love a Barbour but the short sleeves has always been a big turn off for me
@@MrFunkyplatypus Barbour themselves did it in their factory. They sew an extension onto the end of the sleeve made using the same material as the rest of the jacket
If your're taller as average or just want a longer jacket take a look at their Border jacket
love my border , don’t even remember how long i’ve had it now, but it’s still going strong. it’ll probably outlive me 😁
or the Bristol
I absolutely rely on my Border jacket. I have a long torso and it really helps keep the rain and wind off of me. It is long, but not too long (not a fan of “duster” style jackets and the Border avoids that look while staying classic Barbour)!
I recently got my first Beaufort and I love it. The Beaufort does have an inside pocket of sorts, it has a vertical zip between the main zip and storm flap.
Wish Gentleman's Gazette did a Ladies' Gazette. Thanks for the lovely series.
Love my Ashby wax jacket. Have had it a few years and it's still giving sterling service. I've long since forgotten how much I paid for it, but it's been worth every single penny. Good design never goes out of style.
You made a Barbour video! Thanks Sven! I ended up buying with a Barbour in December and I've worn it nonstop ever since. Judging by the build quality, I'll still be wearing it in a decades time. They're definitely worth the money.
@@gentlemansgazette That's not on- I'm sure if you take it up with customer services they'll put it right for you. My one (a Corbridge) comes with a pretty exhaustive warranty, so I'm sure yours will too.
On British country wear, have you had a look at Cordings trousers? They have a superb reputation here in the UK and could be a fun, slightly out-there addition to this series
I love the feel and smell of them. Something about the weight feels like nothing else
No more smell anymore on all Barbour Wax jackets /products!!! Barbour took away it's own DNA. I still can not believe that. The typical Barbour Wax scent was a hugh character of their products. Now it's a neutral "nothing".
@@houseofwine7704 i didnt know they done that. I agree with you.
If you think those jackets are worth it at $400, then I'm certainly tempted to get one in the UK, where they cost almost half that at around £200.
Pepe did nothing wrong That’s $262 UDS as of this date.
@mxt mxt oh, the Pound is much weaker than that. Due to the fact that Barbour is based in the UK, they cost considerably less than overseas, especially across the pond.
I paid £160 for a bnwt Bedale from an authorised stockist
Near Washington , Tyne and wear Uk there’s even a seconds store and you can buy at a fraction of the price !
Have been wearing Barbour jackets for many years, without doubt, the coolest jackets,so many different styles for every occasion 😊
I've had a Barbour jacket for over 20 years. It's extremely well made and will last a lifetime.
I love my Bedale jacket but I bought it at a discount store on clearance for ~$65. Perfect value for the jacket.
JESUS CHRIST... That is a STEAL. Lucky!
same story, one of the best jackets i ever bought
Great video Raphael, make a video of how your routine is in the morning, I admire you, greetings from Argentina!!
I used to live in South Shields not far from Barbour , I have owned one or two Barbour waxed jackets from the 1980s on here are the good points
GOOD POINTS
It is a true Heritage brand that simply never goes out of style/fashion
They are really well made and no matter how much abuse you give them they can be "redeemed and or repaired back to good as new "
They are really waterproof ..really ..(provided you rewax every year or two depending on the type of use and climate you use them in )
You can easily rewax them yourself no problem which saves money AND makes you invest more in your coat as YOU have personally maintained and looked after it so to speak .
They age wonderfully , full of character that develops to you and your body over years of use .
They are expensive but they literally last you a lifetime (with maintenance as required ) 50 years plus is quite common Barbours and even then they don't look dated the classic designs are almost ageless.
BAD POINTS
They are heavy ..just heavy they don't hold water or anything they are just a heavy jacket right off the rail .
35 years later my Moorland is still worn regularly.
3 years later my sappers falling apart. I don't think the quality is there anymore.
@@NaeMuckle Sorry to hear that...I'd be too sad to get the next one and find out is so weak...
yes but this is not it, this was Made in Viet Nam
Is it made in Afghanistan?
I’m a big fan of the Bedale. No regrets of buying it.
Wow it’s serendipitous, I was just looking at Barbour waxed jackets last night, awesome video
Aireney Kirkendoll that’s google tracking your searches mate
The studded vent on the back of the Bedale/Ashby is for horse riding, it’s more comfortable to sit on a horse when the back is open
Good advice. Exactly what I was looking for as reviewers don’t pay attention to sizing and when buying online this is the most important factor to me.
I have the Barbour International “Duke” in tan. Nicely designed and made, great fit.
Been buying these jackets for years and never regretted it, last forever and always fashionable. Worth noting their sports quilts are also brilliant
Glen Clough why do you keep buying a jacket that lasts for forever ?
A jacket or anything that lasts forever is a once buy .
splashpit different variations, styles, colours etc
As most Barbour aren't made in the UK anymore, I've gone with Oxford Blue and their Chelsea Waxed coat.
Material sourced from Scotland and made in England (very happy with it)
I have been very pleased with my beaufort. It's a perfect jacket for fishing on a misty or rainy day.
I have one I purchased in 1979 and it's been back to the factory for refurbishment 5 times ...worth every penny
A few additional things worth mentioning:
- the Beaufort does actually have something equivalent to an "inside" pocket: it's a vertical zipped pocket between the main zipper and the flap.
I bought a Solway for £60 which I took with me on exercise and used mainly as a groundsheet back in 1982. I still wear it today.
Great video,
Could you do a video of what to wear while staying at home doing nothing ?
Birthday suit
Just wear shorts and t-shirt
Hello, the Beaufort Jacket does also have a inside pocket. It even has a zipper, very nice
Glad to see you review my favourite brand for jackets. Danke!
I have a Beaufort bought in 87... Still going!
10yrs ago I bought a Cowen Commando (no longer made, I think) which has more of a military look.
I bought an Ashby, I’m 17 and I got it oversized and I absolutely love it !
I bought the Ashby in black slightly oversized and it's perfect
I have the corbridge Barbour jacket and love it. Highly recommend it especially for the younger generation.
There’s a slim version of the Bedale on the Japanese market. Sleeves are supposedly longer too, but it may or may not have the built-in ribbed cuffs.
spot on review. i too found the bedale's sleeves way too short. also the button holes inside the collar were annoying. but for a high quality jacket made in england the value for money is outstanding.
I live close to the factory and the factory shop in southshield, they do 70% discounts. Also sell one off samples. I think they are made in southshields, england, which is rare!!!
Whats the postcode?
I just bought a Bedale and it fits wonderfully. I love this jacket and can’t wait till it gets a little colder here in North Texas!
It's totally worth it. I got the Beaufort in blue and bought it at a charity shop for 15 Eur!!!! That was 10 years ago and it's still going strong.
I've got a black Barbour sapper wax jacket (paid £220 in the UK) that's about 8 years old now and in need of some repairs and a re-proofing. Best money I ever spent!
Just re waxed my Barbour Border , turned out better than I thought.
You dont need to completely reproof it every year, not even using it on a daily basis, but a maintenance on heavy rubbing zone, like sleeves is Paramont to avoid creases, cracks asn damages.
Found an old-school Gamefair. Little longer and heavier. My son’s son will one day inherit this jacket I swear it’s timeless.
I've got the Barbour International Delta. Somewhere between a modern parka and a traditional wax jacket. It's hard wearing, stylish, warm and absolutely worth it.
In love with Corbridge jacket since structure sounds more modern to me, saving all the best of tradition.
Just bought one, superb...
The Bedale and the Beaufort are the only mens Barbour jackets that are made in England. When I bought mine last year I couldn't decide on the Ashby or the Bedale so I ended up ordering both. I can tell you the Bedale is much nicer quality and I'll have it for the rest of my life.
Great video. I’ve had the Beaufort for a little over a year now. I love it, and get a lot of use from it.
They’re much cheaper to buy in the here in the uk. Love Barbour, they’re excellent quality. If they break they’ll fix it for you and even send you some material of lines they don’t do anymore if you need to fix them yourself.
I've just got the Duke jacket for my birthday. Always had Barbour and Belstaff when I was biker in the 60's. Regards from the UK.
Can you do a is it worth it belstaff wax cotton jacket
I purchased the Beaufort and had the wind guards taken out and sleeves lengthened. Definitely worth doing as a tall slim guy with long arms.
you can buy from barbour direct, they have a factory outlet store. I purchased my jacket from that store located in Jarrow in 2018
I love all mine, had my first Beaufort in 1989, many colours and styles .
