This is one of those things us kids in the early 2000's used to watch and of course should've known better this wasn't real but despite that, it's amazing that this segment in the trilogy showed us what was once living in our oceans millions and millions of years ago
I watched this in the early 2010s with my best friend a I still remember believing there were 6 time periods due to the the 6 episodes of walking with dinosaurs.
Most time travel media: *moving a chair results in seven wars and 40 major changes* Sea monsters: *rides cameroceras, tosses sea scorpion, leaves inflataboat behind, refuses to elaborate, continues to their next destination*
The fact that there isn't more time travelling to the past with a human guide, it really gives a sense of scale to everything and how big it really all is. Nigel Marven did such an amazing job with it, so if this is the only one we get than its a pretty damn good one.
It's awesome how devoted the whole crew was making the whole thing seem so much more realistic i can't even imagine anyone else doing nearly as good of a job i would love for them to return for a remake
As a kid I’d watch this obsessively, to the point where the dvd stopped working. Clicking on this video, I just got a rush of all the memories of watching this in the portable DVD player on long car rides. It just made me feel so happy in a way I can’t really describe
Wow, nostalgic af. I had forgotten about watching movies on the back of the passenger or driver seat, sometimes even a portable DVD player with a screen included. And I remember watching this a lot!
What i love the most about these videos is the acting, you genuinely feel like they are a crew on a mission. Just the detail of them passing the re-breather around was great
Omg, I found it! So when I was a kid, my mom left me at home, so I grabbed this documentary, that we had on cd, and by the end I was so scared, that when I pressed some button on the remote that turned off the video on the tv, but audio was still going, I thought these creatures were going to come out of the screen, completely forgot that we had a back door that could be open from the inside, tried the front door that was closed, and decided to SMASH THE WINDOW WITH MY FOOT, and somehow crawl through it, with the shards sticking out and on the floor, completely unharmed, must’ve been a big adrenalin rush. So I ran to look for my mom and I thought she would be upset about the tv and the window, but she was just glad that I was fine. What a wild childhood memory with this one😅

During the scenes where Nigel breathed the special airmix, I decided to breathe the air around me to appreciate the atmosphere today. I ended up smelling the neighbour's barbecue. 👌
The liopleuredon one always freaked me out during the night feeding part. Also the music perfectly conveys the horror of coming face to face with an ancient leviathan
Nigel Marven is hands-down one of the greatest people to ever exist. Just highlighting and making nature entertaining and exciting, all with a big smile on his face the entire time
I wish we had more series like this and "Walking with" in this day and age. Would be amazing to see them with new discoveries and hypothesis. As long as it would have the same level of quality and realism. Now a days most shows like this rely completely on CGI. From the rocks, grass and water to the animals themselves. That makes the world seem uncanny and fake. Where as these series were filmed in real time, in the real world and they supplemented with CGI.
Dude you're lucky to have such a cool specialisation like that! I do earth sciences with a focus on paleontology, but we don't study much about marine vertebrates... What college do you go to?
My actual first experience with crippling depression: watching this as a little kid thinking that it was real, only for my parents to tell me wasn't following an argument with my third grade teacher. I cried for like ten solid minutes and refused to come out of my room for three days. Good times.
Of the top 100 best paleo-quotes, yeet by Nigel Marven is number two. The very number one is when Nigel said 'you idiot' to a crewmember at 58:23-58:24! 😂
The practical models and effects for the creatures in this series are simply incredible for their time. I love how they went to the extent of giving Nigel the ability to interact with physical versions of the monsters as opposed to just simply CG. So much effort was put into this production you can tell.
Even during some more.. _disturbing_ moments, media in the Walking With/Chased By franchise generally feel like nature documentaries throughout as they arguably ought to. By contrast, there are points in Sea Monsters that feel straight out of a thriller.
Nah. Having had some experience with time travel, you can't actually interact with the past, and you absolutely cannot jump 450,000,000 years at once. At most, you can only jump about 15million at a time, otherwise you end up outside the Universe like I did and then you get to watch Every universe happen and unhappen in real time forever like me.
i think this was one of the few (if not only) shows/movies as a kid that i fully believed was real. the practical effects even today are amazing, and the cgi still holds up decently well. they really did such a good job making this feel like a prehistoric documentary
I just remember thinking that the creatures seen throughout this video were real but of course years later when I got older I soon realized that everything was just CGI
I came here because I had Prehistoric Park on DVD as a kid, so it’s super cool to learn that there’s MORE of Nigel Marven going back in time to interact with prehistoric creatures!!
I remember after 4:00--4:11, he said a line that went “it may not look like it, but amazingly, I’m stand on what will become New York City I half a billion years time.” I specifically remember that and it isn’t anywhere. Mandela Effect?
On the dvd version that line was actually there, I think on the blue ray they removed it. (Might be the other way round as I had both the dvd and blue ray as a kid)
There could be a chance his arm might get pulled along with the Dunk's jaws as it pulls on the bait Dont forget it is a 30 foot beast of a leviathan with 2 inch armor for a face. *And that mf doesnt even have any teeth*
Here's a bit of science update for everyone: 1. Nigel went to see the SMALL Sea Scorpions. There are ones bigger than him during this time. 2. Not only were those Nothosaurs about half the size of the bigger ones, but so is that Cymbospondylus he ran into! 3. Dunkleosteus was a bit shorter than that, but the jaws were no less impressive. 4. The Megalodon was somehow even larger than what was depicted here and was longer than just a scaled-up, stocky great white. 5. Those Leedsichthys were not the biggest fish that ever lived, that title probably belongs to Megalodon, so they were even less safe from the giant Pliosaurs roaming about, and even at that time there were still big ichthyosaurs around, so even more deadly predators than in this episode. 6. Those Mosasaurs fossils show may have been less social than shown here (which makes sense, given that they're basically just monitor lizards that adapted to live in the ocean and modern Komodo Dragons really get mean with each other), since they've been found in interspecies combat having chomped down on each others' skulls. And also they were FAST, with proper tail flukes unlike the paddles shown here, meaning if they spot you, you're dead if they think you're lunch.
Oh my goodness The Tylosaurus family attack was SUSPENSE AS HELL I know it's coming, I'm expecting it... but when it comes... It isn't even a jumpscare but it gives me internal thrills and CHILLS I love Nigel Marven. I hope he survived oh i forgot he did and now he's voicing Prehistoric Kingdom
I love reading the comments in this video, I was really young lad when I first saw this series and was obsessed. Still one of the things from my childhood that drove me to appreciating biology and the earth in general. Watching back now as a young adult, I can still say that the "walking with" series is one of the best ever made.
I had the DVD of this and watched it religiously as a kid. It cut off at the dunkleosteus though saying "to be continued", and i was always so upset I didn't get to see the rest of it. So glad I found this.
Because of this documentary I was actually able to correct a museum on Mosasaurs when I was about 7 years old No I'm not joking If you want the reason, they were labeled as Mosasaurs in the museum but they were clearly skeletons of Liopluerodons. I asked this museum staff (who looked like a college student at the time) about it, while my parents are like "No its fine sweetie, don't bother the nice museum staff" The college student looked at me and then my parent's and said "yeah hes got a point"
I think that’s really cool, but there is a chance you made a mistake, because the liopleurodon in this show was quite scientifically inaccurate, especially when it came to size, so it could’ve been a mosasaur.
Head canon: the cameraman from Walking with Dinosaurs, Walking with Beasts, Walking with Monsters, Prehistoric Park, Sea Monsters, and Primeval are the same guy. If you’re still alive and not eaten, you deserve a freaking promotion! And the world’s biggest raise!
That's interesting, but I have some other interesting headcannon ideas. Such as: Nigel in Primeval S3 is in the same universe as this and prehistoric park and he went back into the anomaly to escape the Giganotosaurus.
Talk about balls of steel when it comes to picking something that scary looking up and throwing it aside. I don't I would've due to my massive arachnophobia
this is actually the best CGI ive ever seen.. not because its the best modeled or anything. But because of all the secondary techniques they use. They first show the animals at inopportune angles suggesting they dont have the best camera-shot at first. These details make this show feel extremely realistic. Honestly more real than other survival shows WITHOUT dinosaurs haha
No, no, no.... Screw that. If those sea scorpions taste anything like lobster and I've got butter and a pot of boiling water..... It's over. I'll show 'em what the word 'predator' means. And that orthicone had better watch out too. I love deep fried calamari.
I found out the actual names for those animals: the sea scorpions are Megalograptus and the Orthocone is Cameraceras. Mosasaurs include Platecarpus and Tylosaurus.
Holy shit same I used to watch this then imagine sea monsters at my swim lessons when I was like 5 I ended up scaring myself thinking about a basilosaurus hahaha
I was 5 years old and this along with Jurassic Park, Jaws, and Tremors would be the movies I would watch nonstop and of course you would imagine I believed this was real

The fact that there isn't more time travelling to the past with a human guide, it really gives a sense of scale to everything and how big it really all is. Nigel Marven did such an amazing job with it, so if this is the only one we get than its a pretty damn good one.
The walking with series invokes a deep nostalgia and feeling I can’t describe. The way the cgi looks is just so unique and charming to me.

I agree.

At 32:50 he says a similar line but with Cairo instead of New York, if that helps
That’s why, your memories are jumbled together, creating a whole memory that actually didn’t happen
On the dvd version that line was actually there, I think on the blue ray they removed it. (Might be the other way round as I had both the dvd and blue ray as a kid)

Dont forget it is a 30 foot beast of a leviathan with 2 inch armor for a face.
*And that mf doesnt even have any teeth*
Here's a bit of science update for everyone:
1.
Oh my goodness
The Tylosaurus family attack was SUSPENSE AS HELL
I know it's coming, I'm expecting it... but when it comes... It isn't even a jumpscare but it gives me internal thrills and CHILLS

I was actually able to correct a museum on Mosasaurs when I was about 7 years old
No I'm not joking
If you want the reason, they were labeled as Mosasaurs in the museum but they were clearly skeletons of Liopluerodons. I asked this museum staff (who looked like a college student at the time) about it, while my parents are like "No its fine sweetie, don't bother the nice museum staff"
The college student looked at me and then my parent's and said "yeah hes got a point"

I think that’s really cool, but there is a chance you made a mistake, because the liopleurodon in this show was quite scientifically inaccurate, especially when it came to size, so it could’ve been a mosasaur.
