I just love hearing Marc talk - I could listen to him all day! Especially when he's talking about the history of Rosieres. It's an amazing history, isn't it? And what a find getting these manuscripts! Much love and big hugs xxx
Thank you Karen! Marc goes all shy when I read him comments like yours. It’s so sweet. There’s so much more history to tell and I’m glad so many people enjoy it! X
I watch most of the various Chateau blogs, I particularly like yours as it doesn’t go too fast, we get the flavour, rather like when enjoying good food! As others said Marc’s voice is mesmerising and such an addition to your channel. Seeing all those wonderful old documents I’d be digitising them which I find helps in reading & preserving them. It’s all so exciting & I hope eventually the missing cellars are discovered. John
Hard to imagine that those documents have lasted over 400 years. Great hearing about the previous owners of your chateau. imagining what their lives may have been like. I love history.
Fascinating! I could listen to Marc read that all day and never get bored. Those documents would be so exciting to own. I really wish I could be a Patreon to see the rest of it but we're old and retired living on a pension. I don't know why but my excitement listening to Marc explain these was almost as high as Marcs excitement LOL
Send us an email through our website and I’ll send you any history Patreon videos x
@@Chroniclesofrosieres How very thoughtful.
Thank you for such detailed explanations. I am learning a lot about not only your chateau but how historical life was in France. Very interesting!
It's always a treat listening to Marc and his knowledge of history with a splash of 'just being a Dad/boy with Clemente'. Thank you!
How wonderfrul! My favourite chateau family--not just propery - developers!
Aw thanks Janet! We would be terrible property developers - we always think of the history and never the business!!!
Such a rich and fabulous history. What a place to live. You are 'really' living.
I'm glad you posted this for non-Patreon folks. It's been interesting to hear about the stories from the past again. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for watching it again Lisa!
What a splendid acquisition! I do hope we might be told some more stories as the details unfold🙂. I remember getting so excited when I could read the name and address on paper sacks which had been stuffed as poor insulation in the wall cavities of my son's home! Lol. It's wonderful to feel a connection to the residents of the past. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Beverly! Definitely more stories to come!
How lovely. I totaly enjoy listening to Marc reading the documents. The two of you are so adorable.
Aw thanks Roberta!

Kathryn I think we need to employ you as our Marketer... That's such an amazingly concise and effective way of capturing what we're going for here!
You deserve a great following as we need more people who nurture our earth.
Excellent formulation!
Thankyou I Love History 400 Years A Go I Would Love To Back In Time I think it is fascinating What happened I think it was very cruel Long Ago 💕
That was really interesting. Loved the ´defunct´ wife comments.
So very fascinating. The penmanship is so beautiful.
I Just love history. Very fascinating!! Lots of love from Tennessee!!!
Dear Netflix, Please commission a series where a passionate expert browses ancient bills and receipts, picking out interesting details that catch his eye. Be sure to include close-ups of any stamps and signatures that seem particularly pleasing. I would watch it for hours!
I love this 😂❤️
superbly fascinating! How fortunate you both are to live in a place that has such a rich history that you are able to discover as the chateau and its lands reveals more to you!!
Marc really knows how to present historic details in an entertaining way.
Thank you Michael. It's like that all the time with him. He's like a walking encyclopoedia!
I love them both together…. Quite fun!
Thank you for taking the time to share with us. Especially when you are so busy with your young family. Just love seeing you all. 😊
Our pleasure Barbara - thank you for watching!
That is so amazing! ♥️♥️♥️
How lucky that Marc spotted it before someone else did, and that whoever sold it didn’t just toss it. 🎉
Hopefully over time you guys will find more such paperwork from other areas.
And I’m sure (as Marc mentioned) there’s more to learn from the bills too… everything from cost of upkeep to diet to how far they had to go to find particular items they wanted. ♥️
There’s quite a story about where it came from. We might explore it in another video!
Dear Marc, do people say that you do a good Mr Bean ? Well, sometimes maybe, the intro doesn't help to dissolve that image either ! You are super duper cute, that accent is priceless. Another lovely video. I am reading your ancestors book at the moment, I have a copy to Stephanie J. xoxox love to all four xxxx
This is such a wonderful find! Marc makes everything so interesting and has a wonderful way of explaining everything. I love his sense of humour too! You are a wonderful couple and enjoy all of your vlogs. Thank you!! xo
So kind of you to say Jane!
Is this old French? And must read cursive? This is a gold mine for history people. 💛 God bless you all and Keepsafe. Give kisses to your babies 💋
Thanks my dear! It’s not old French Marc says - it’s just old writing, which makes it hard to read.
What an absolute treasure trove. Marc brings to life the history within so well.
Glad you enjoyed it Bernice!
What an incredible find! Honestly, even when I don’t completely understand what Marc is saying, I could listen to him talk all day. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to read the handwriting in the documents. Some of it seems so faded and so small.
He is so confused that people love to listen to him but I completely agree!!!
This is so interesting. I especially enjoyed the part about notary signatures.
How lucky to have all those historical documents ,that will keep Marc busy for a long time to come .thank you for sharing
It certainly will!
Indeed a great find at the auction, very interesting that it survived all this time.
We have some even older manuscripts here - some written on animal skin from the 14th century!
Wow, we're you lucky finding these papers at that auction that can help you reveal more about your chateau. Great idea having the student read a copy of these papers for his studies and to help piece together more history. I'm glad you posted your video today. I had missed hearing what you were up to.Your family is so hard working and Clement is adorable.
Thanks Katherine! I hope we’re back up and running now with videos so there should be more soon!
Penmanship! What a treasure trove. You are feeding my love of history. Thanks for sharing. 🌺
It’s a good habit to feed 😊 Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your cute family
Thanks Angela! And thanks for joining in the live chat!
I just loved listening to the history of the Chateau and Marc reading it added that French charm with Amy’s laughter and encouragement I do hope you’re having a lovely time with your family🥰The blocks are a wonderful distraction and the pool lovely cool down with Clement come on Marc jump in😀😍😍Thankyou for this vlog precious documents Abiento my loves😘😘❤️❤️👌
Aw thanks Brenda - always lovely to hear what you think! ❤️
What a wonderful acquisition! I would be spending every moment soaking in every bit of of information on those pages, as I know you are doing! Thank goodness documents like yours have been preserved. I wish more people valued history as you do. That is why your vlogs and the vlogs of other chateau owners are so good, because they are stirring up interest in preservation, restoration, and protecting and respecting historic structures, documents, artifacts, etc. Thank you for sharing this with all of us! xxx
Thank you for your kind words Stephanie!
i just love your intro... clement at the piano never ceases to crack me up!
Me too! I never get tired of watching it! Now we have to work out what to get Juliette to do!
@@Chroniclesofrosieres A smile would be enough!

Arranging the flowers, painting, dancing, and singing :)
How interesting!
loving the history. ty
Very interesting.
Fascinating! What a treasure to explore and cherish.
Thank you!
How lucky you are to have documents to tie to the long history of your chateau. I bet a number of current chatelaine’s will be jealous 😊. Love to hear more on how you found/were contacted about this treasure. Look forward to learning more 💕
I think I need to do a video on how they were found, because it’s taken years of research and persistence by Marc to find and obtain them!
This is fascinating and am looking forward to more when you get the time! The deed to our property in Honduras is all handwritten and includes all the descendants who had to be contacted before the sale could be finalized. It took months and lots of individual agreements/ payoffs before we closed- all in Spanish! Best wishes to you and your family! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Gosh that sounds interesting, if complicated!
What a wonderful find!
I love the beautiful penmanship in these historical papers. I don’t think they even teach that anymore, what a shame.
So very interesting to have such documents. I would even love to find out what the receipts were for and how much things cost. Documents are such an important part of having the chateau.
It’s been great to find these. Just sad we don’t know where the rest of the archive is!
@@Chroniclesofrosieres Perhaps the papers you have will give you a clue.
How amazing to have all this history. I remember how I felt when doing family history to find out my ancestors were Viking Royalty.
Wow that’s quite the family tree Kathleen!
Wow!what wonderful documented history you have acquired. I can’t believe how old some of those papers are.
We have some even older ones - we’ll show you in another video perhaps!
I also love the beautiful penmanship along with the history lesson of signatures. I appreciate the the maps with circles to give us an idea of the region you were taking about in relationship to your chateau. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
Thank you Rosemarie! A surprising amount of effort went into finding out how to add those maps 🤦🏼♀️ so I’m glad they were useful. Your name sounds very French - do you have French heritage?
@@Chroniclesofrosieres yes. My dad was French Canadian. The Deschenes name (my ancestors) traces back to King Charlemagne. The genealogy stopped in the Chene region of Switzerland. My first language was French but I don’t have the opportunity to it much these days.
I was fascinated by the script of the documents that Marc was reading! I wish he would write a book about the intricate signatures of historical documents!
That’s an idea Anita!
What an exciting pile of papers, and what fantastic information for the student to help with the research of the Chateau, hope we get to hear his findings. Xxx
So do we! He’s not been here in a while but we’re hoping he will be up for this!
Enjoyed. Love the fascinating history.
My ancestors were from the Gap/Venterol and Sisteron/Mison area (1500s), so I’m fascinated by your documents because when I went searching for information/genealogical documents for these areas I could not find ANYTHING - most likely destroyed in the French Wars of Religion. I even drove down to Digne, because everyone said documents were saved in their archives . . . le rien, le zéro‼️ Saludos de San Diego, California. Loved this video.🥰
It's hard to track these things down!!
Truly enjoy history...thank you.
That's great Jean - thank you! Marc's going to do more!
Love this, lovely to see you back here again ❤️
I am a master's student of medieval studies and would LOVE to help translate/digitise these documents! I just saw your chateau on workaway and got so excited! I'll have to apply when travel allows.
Hello! How lovely! Do feel free to email us so we can get to know each other! Contact details are on our website (I don’t write the email address on UA-cam or we get spam!)
Très intéressant !
The paper quality seems high for its age. Assume that they haven't been handled often. From watching experts handle old documents, I think that you're supposed to wear gloves so that you don't get acid from your hands onto the paper which I think will damage it in time. Hopefully you'll also scan the documents as a safeguard. A very exciting find.
So interesting! So nice to have those papers from so many years ago.
This was very interesting. Thank you so much for sharing it.
How exciting..cant wait for more!
Glad you enjoyed it Esther!
I’m so glad I found you on UA-cam. I’ve been watching chateau diy and enjoyed you two immensely. Great find by the way.
I’m so glad you found us and you enjoy watching! It’s great to have you!
Love the history. It is wonderful that you take the time to research the history.
Bonjour Marc, Amy, Clement and bonny baby, Juliette! Marc you are such a wit and your voice and narration are beautiful.
Oh, I am so thrilled for you all that you found these wonderful parchments of history, on the past owners and life, of your Chateau. The administration stamps are beautiful; I hope you will photo copy them, enlarge, and display them in frames.
I would find the bills fascinating as well; I wonder if any contain feast menus for balls they held?
Wouldn't it be super to get in touch with the Chateau owners, near you, mentioned in the papers, to visit and swap notes. 😀 I am sure your Masters degree young visitor will be in heaven to transcribe the papers.
Absolutely lovely to see you both again; I look forward eagerly for your next video. Thank you. 😊 ❣🌟👌
These documents are a real treasure!!!! The penmanship is beautiful.Lots of interesting info! Love from Vermont
Hello to you in Vermont Rebekah - hope you’re not too cold! So glad you found this interesting. We love doing history videos!
A nice auction find! So very interesting!
We were excited to find it!
What a fascinating vlog. Thank you 🦘🦘🦘
Glad you enjoyed it Dot!
What fun!! I can’t wait to hear more of your discoveries from these letters!!!
You two are delightful to watch and listen to! Thank you for sharing them with us!
Very interesting!!!
Glad you enjoyed it Amy
Fascinating !
Glad you enjoyed it Joyce!
Wow such history! How amazing, I love this lovely family and how gorgeous is Marc, I wish I could speak French as good as he can speak English, I’m fairly new to your vlogs and loving them, hope you had a great holiday in the UK lots of love xxxxxxxxx😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m always in awe of him Stella - I wish I was half as good in French as he is in English. X
C‘est merveilleux, merci beaucoup!
Merci à vous !
Great vlog very interesting ❤️
Thanks Joanne!
You should not photocopy but scan it in. Then you put it in a document management system and you can attach transcripts, notes etc. In case you need any of the papers as a 'photocopy' you can still print it out.
You can then also involve e.g. volunteers to help in the processing.
Great idea!
This is wonderful. I am so interested in history, and presented beautifully. Thank you.
Thank you! Really glad you enjoyed this!
Very interesting
Thanks Ann!
Maybe you could have it printed so we can buy it!
What interesting documents.
Aren’t they just!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if chateau owners when handing the chateaux on had a box of documents to leave with the chateaux? Even a copy would be good if it was personal to their family. Love the passion you both have for the history of the estate, and for bringing the chateau sympathetically into the 21st century.
I think I’m going to talk about this in another video actually as people seem really interested in where the documents came from and may not be aware of the system of archives in these big homes. Thanks for prompting me to do this!
How absolutely fantastic :)
Glad you enjoyed it Leigh!
wow, how very interesting
Thank you!
Being from a "new" country it amazes me that documents like that are obtainable and that you can simply look them over on a sunny day out at the picnic table!! I just can't imagine living in a home with this kind of history. The fact that one item was actually written on animal skin is amazing. Great find Amy and Marc and as always, I love the sense of humour between you during your vlogs. Hope all is well and thanks for sharing!
Thanks Sue! It is pretty crazy. We have some even older ones too! We’ll have to talk about them on another video!
Wish it was hot here! Love the translations Mark. You are both so funny!!!!😘😘😘
That’s was way back last September in the UK. It’s freezing back here in Rosières now! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
How fascinating to go through all those documents! Absolutely brilliant. And to read all the different writing. I can’t believe there’s written history so far back. What a wonderful find. Can’t wait to hear more about the history of these people. Thank you from Northern California💜🤟🏻🍀😎🇺🇸
We have some even earlier documents Liz - stay tuned!
@@Chroniclesofrosieres oh my gosh older than 400 years??? I’m totally stunned!! I can’t wait! I will be checking in
Really interesting, Marc.
Rikki Biermann, Pretoria, South Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks Rikki in South Africa!
What a stroke of luck finding those documents , very interesting to know the history of those who came before you !
Ha ha - not so much luck as Marc’s hours and hours of research and then scouring of every auction house and archive available to be alerted to anything to do with anybody who had ever lived here! I think we should do a video about how he found them actually!!!
Fantastic vlog I love history more please thank you for sharing
Marc's please people like it and is already planning more!
The information from these papers is valuable living history. So interesting, and such a great find. Please handle your valuable, beautiful papers with gloves so the oil and microscopic dirt will not affect them. It causes yellowing and breaking down of the fibers. Love your posts
Thanks Bonnie!
BEST WISHES
Thank you!
This is so interesting it makes you just to want to learn more . Love the idea about getting someone else to do the donkey work and use it for their masters 😀
Thanks Sarah! Yes we definitely need to use ‘our’ student as much as possible!
Now that was quite interesting and thank you for sharing this valuable history. Love to listen to Marc and noticing his blue shirt -quite Hawaiian isn’t it? I’ll be flying to Maui this Thursday -Aloha!! 🌈🌈🌈
Have a marvellous time Diane! It’s a dream of ours to go to Hawaii!
@@Chroniclesofrosieres Hope you can some day..wait til the kids are a tad older..:) it would be alot of fun :)
Very interesting indeed.
And very valuable for your property.
I remember spending hours, if not days, going through my family documents going back to Louis XIII.
Carry on investing, you might find more documents!
Thanks Jack. We have a whole lot more documents actually. With all this interest we’ll have to talk about more!!!
What a great find! How interesting! I thought you were supposed to wear special gloves to handle old documents, etc. I was thinking - Don’t touch the papers with your bare fingers! Lol!
These aren’t particularly rare, delicate or vulnerable. As long as hands are washed it’s fine! The gloves are more if they’re going to be handled frequently and are fragile!
@@Chroniclesofrosieres Thank you for taking the time to explain this! I appreciate it! I should have known you knew what you were doing!
Penmanship at school? Doesn‘t exist anymore. I used to teach penmanship and calligraphie That was more than 10 years ago. Today, they think, that students will write on the PC and not scribble notes by hand!
My father who was a notary and civil servant had very old, big and heavy registers at his office and in an archive- all beautifully hand written, names with ornamental letters. I loved to look at it. My father taught me the old German writing, so l was able to read the texts.
Marc, j‘ aimerais que vous lisiez une fois un texte en français. Ça doit être un vieux français. Ce serait très intéressant
(Suite) d‘ entendre cette langue!… comme cela sonne dans les oreilles!?
It is true, you need somebody who has time to read and work on these documents. And, it is true, handle the old paper with care. On our fingertips, there is a kind of acidity which is aggressive to the paper. Well, enough teaching!! 🤪
J’aime bien que vous avez choisi le nom ancien de Vivarais au lieu d‘ Ardèche!Greetings from your fan in Switzerland
Wonderful! You’re right that there’s less attention to the written word these days. I studied calligraphy at my middle school which seems so strange nowadays!
Just imagine what kind of memoirs will be uncovered at auction long after you guys are gone!!! 😂 All your videos instead of the written record. I doubt if anyone would believe it - tying a Christmas tree together, the animal stories (the peacock in the house, etc)the vegetable garden and so many more. Priceless
Oh gosh can you imagine??? Even now I think most of the local people who apparently watch us think we’re completely mad!
@@Chroniclesofrosieres When I lived in Germany, we were known in our little village as “the crazy Americans”!!! 😂
Wow! What a find. Shouldn’t you use gloves when handling such old paper? Looks well preserved tho. Fascinating.
Washed hands are ok - as long as there's no grease!
How did you find the exact auction that was presenting these papers? Or was it just a fluke that you found, or a specific website? Bizarre‼️🥰
Marc spends a lot of time setting up alerts for auction houses around the country using the names of the previous owners and families and estates connected with Rosières that he's found during his research.
So interesting! How easy was it for Marc to read? Is old French very different to present day French?
It’s pretty hard for him to read because of the writing but the language itself is modern(ish) French!
Thank you, thought it might be different, like old English. Thinking Vicar of Dibly and Alice trying to read from old bible!!
Looks like some pages were ripped from a ledger.
wow this is amazing. Are these old families buried on the properties or in the local grave yards?
It depends. We don’t think there are any burials here but it’s possible. The local graveyard is only a hundred or so years old so these people wouldn’t be buried there. I’d never really thought about it actually but now I’m very intrigued!
