Sad news, some hope, and an update on the Coach House

- Some really sad news to tell you today, and because we're so disrupted with our work, I've done you a catch up tour of the Coach House, to look at what's coming up before we can move in.
We are Marc, Amy, Clement and Juliette, a French-English family restoring a 33 room medieval chateau and huge estate in southern France. Follow our award-winning, historically-sensitive restorations and our journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, with plenty of laughter along the way.

I’m sorry for the loss of your fellow, they are never just an animal when they are pets, they are family. When something happens to them , it loosing a family member.
I'm so sorry for the loss of Dave the turkey. Any animal you raise and take care of is always a member of the family and very much loved. I'm very happy that your cockrell is on the mend. 🐓
Our pets are definitely part of our family! 😢 I can understand your grief. So sorry that your turkey died and so glad that Tiny, the cockrell, is getting better!

I am so sorry that a fox got Dave, but glad that Tiny has made such a good recovery. Your sweet intro always makes me smile, the bits about the animals are charming, and the children are darling.
Having lost chickens to foxes, my heart goes out to you. It’s a harrowing scene left behind, so really feel for you, especially the way you love your animals. I always smiled at the way you would pat your Dave as he followed you around. I agree with how you keep your birds to live a wonderful life. The coach house is absolutely beautiful too.
So very sorry to hear of your loss. What a wonderful turkey Dave was, and he will never be forgotten. It is such a wonderful relief that your beautiful cockerel has survived, with all your love and care. I grieve more when an animal dies, than when a human does. They are so special to us, and are only with us for a short time. xxx
So very sad about poor Dave the Turkey, pets like him become so special and part of the family. On a happier note, how wonderful that your tender, loving care has paid off with Tiny. Hope he continues to recover.

Any animal that is a pet becomes part of your family. It is hard to loose a family member and so sweet seeing how your chicken loves human cuddles. I have never seen anyone able to hold a chicken and pet them. Your coach house chimney is beautiful and looks original.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your little ones. I've grieved over every animal in my care that I've lost. It's never easy. My heart is with you.
My aunt had a close to 20 year old rooster who lived through quite a lot and would have more. Unfortunately recently, they had some animal break in at night and the whole flock (between 20-30) was gone :(. But What I really wanted to emphasize was that roosters can really live a long life :)
I am sorry, Amy, about your birds, especially poor Dave! I completely understand your point about letting them free range. Just know that the birds all had a wonderful life! 💜
Hi Amy, Marc and family, I'm very sorry about your dear turkey. Loosing a pet is always very hard and sad. I'm so happy your gorgeous rooster made it with the vet's help and antibiotics. Best of luck with all of your construction and renovations!!!
Donkeys and geese are super at being on guard for your animals night and day.
It hurts deeply when anything that we love is hurt or killed. I am so sorry for your grief and I hope everyone heals . The fox was doing what is natural for it, but I hope you can protect your animals from the foxes.

So, so sorry for the loss of your wonderful turkey. I'm so glad Tiny looks to be so completely on the mend. I don't have chickens here yet, but in the past I've lost so many to people letting their dogs roam far from home and marauding wherever they go. I remember coming home from school once and finding nearly every single chicken killed, and just killed for sport. Anyway, I hope you don't sustain any further losses.

I’m so sorry you lost your beloved Dave. I watch The Moons, who have two pet turkeys, Harold and Rodger, and they have such personalities and want to be everywhere their humans are. i never knew turkeys were so sweet and comical, which makes me understand your love for Dave. I am thrilled for you that Tiny is doing so well. I’m glad you still have him. Our animals are family members.
You gave that wonderful bird a great life. I'm sure that if asked and could answer he would have said he would rather take the risk and lead a free life than be caged and "safe". Hugs to you all.

Your animals are very lucky to have you and you are lucky to have them. I love pets of all species too. They enrich our lives beyond measure. 🙂
Dave the Turkey will be missed. He clearly led a very good life with your family - a life of freedom they never would have had if not for you. Living in the wild brings such wonderful gifts and huge challenges. Ours are porcupines and coyotes. We do our best to protect our animal family members but know that we cannot protect them from everything. Live is fragile no matter how hard we plan and prepare. Know, please, that you did the very best for your birds. Cherish, as you are, the birds that have survived and look for opportunities, as you will, to protect new animal family members. I enjoyed the Coach House tour and what is happening with it. But alas, sometimes our pets come first when they are in distress. My heart is heavy with yours and I send you love and light as that's all I can do to help you. Keep passing love to your animals.
You need to get a Pyrenean dog. He will guard the birds during the daytime.❤🇬🇧
Terribly sorry to hear about your pet Turkey and Rooster being killed and injured. Our fur and feathered friends are so wonderful and loving, and all of us hate when anything bad happens to any of them. Perhaps you and the children can make a nice Memorial in the woods to the Turkey, and have a little service, which may help give them closure. {{{hugs}}} and best wishes for the Roster's speedy recovery.

Oh Amy I´m so so sorry for your loss 💔🥺 As a big animal lover myself I know exactly what you are going through. They become familymembers and the grief when we loose them is so hard. I'm so sorry for your loss, admittedly I shed a tear. I'm so glad he was able to live out his life as a "free bird", I agree with you he would have been sad to be locked up every day and most likely would not have had as long of a life as he did. The coach house is coming along beautifully. I'm starting to get excited for the day you move in, although that's when the really hard work begins. Blessings to all of you.
Amy and Marc, having your animals roaming free is what makes your channel so special . It's beautiful to see them follow you around. So sorry about your birds, Amy. I realize how fond of them you are, as they are your pets. You are to be commended for your care of and for them. I believe that all living creatures have feelings and that they respond to the care and attention you give them. You and Tiny are in my thoughts and best wishes!
I’m so glad Tiny seems to be on the mend. And there is nothing wrong with feeling upset over the loss of Dave. There may be worse things in the world but our pets are present with us and a big part of our lives.
You can be as careful as you can but sometimes nature rules us.
I hope you take the time to grieve as lots of your viewers will also do. Won’t be the same without Dave.

Amy you give all your birds a wonderful life and if a fox is hunting in the day time then keeping them in a caged area wouldn't have have saved them sadly, indeed more were probably able to escape in the open. I am so glad that tiny is on the mend and you can be proud that his recovery is down to the wonderful care you are giving him❤

I'm so so sorry to hear this news. Unfortunately it's coming up to pup season and the females will take anything to tide them over the the first few weeks. She will have watched your movements over a number of days and was able to get in and out in broad daylight. I have a secure dog run 6x3m and I put my hens in before I leave. Even then I have seen the evidence of digging while I was away only for 2hrs. The other suggestion to to have a 6ft wire mesh, roofless, and bury the wire into the ground pinned down, let the grass grow through it so the fox cannot see the base,or electric check fencing. RIP Dave.🪽
Sorry for your loss. It's that time of year for those of us who free range our flocks. Wild animals are now feeing their kits etc. Our flocks have a fab life but there is a risk sadly. Bon continuation xxx

Hi Amy, I feel your pain, he may have been a Turkey, but he was a living, breathing pet to your family. You did get to save the two chickens. It's a tough call, to keep them caged for survival, or allow them free range, for their personal wellbeing. All you can do is keep up with the safeguards you have in place, if you can improve on them, I am sure you and Marc will. The coach house is going to be so comfy, cozy and beautiful when you're finished. I sat through all the adverts during this episode and will continue for you. Love from N.Y.

I like the idea of hanging a big basket. At once, I also was reminded of a quite big rustic wooden chandelier with about 6 arms in the coach house of château de Lalacelle. This might be an alternative. 😗

So sad! We had the same thing happen to our childrens sweet pet chickens. I sure can understand how you feel. Our rooster Nickerdoodle and our rooster Red were killed. Unfortunately it seems like once an animal finds a successful place to hunt they don’t forget it. Its so hard to not let them free range after that. Sure loved having them making there little noises and chickens who loved nothing more than being carried around by a little girl! Sorry for your loss!

I am truly sorry to hear of the loss of your turkey Dave and other birds. I have been where you are and I know all to well the sadness you are feeling. I have lost chickens, turkeys, Guinea fowl and ducks to both predators and hurricanes. They weren’t just “yard birds” as many refer to them…they were our pets and family members. As careful as we also were we still suffered tragedy. Like you I’ve also nursed the injured. Sending much kindness, love and positive energy to you all. ❤️🥰
We have rescue ducks and chicken, and they are part of the family. Most ppl cannot understand this, but we promise each and every bedraggled unwanted chicken when they arrive with us that they will have a great rest of their lives. Our chicken only get stabled during the night, otherwise they are in a great orchard garden together with the ducks.
We also have casualties from time to time and it breaks my heart but I always think that for the time they are with us, they live their lives like they are supposed to do, scratching, foraging, taking sand baths and just doing chicken things instead of being locked away in dark cages as were the beginning of their lives.
You did well and Dave will be remembered.

The progress at the coach house is impressive and I can’t wait until you’re able to move in. The idea with the basket lamp for the bedroom is brilliant and really goes well with the rustic theme of the coach house.
I would leave the feet of the bathtub as they are right now, the colour combination looks great.
We connect to our animals very much like we connect to friends and family. When something awful happens to any of them, we feel it. My heart goes out to you.
So tricky to balance safety with freedom for animals. Nice to see the love for the animals, and it surely helped this "little" one survive!

No need to apologize for your grief over losing Dave--he was part of your family & shared your love. So glad Tiny is recovering!! Beautiful work on the coach house! But i'd suggest a vintage look ceiling fan for the bedroom to help reduce heat build up by moving the air, especially with the tall ceiling. But the basket was lovely-- have you asked the cafe where they got it?

Aww so glad he’s ok …I do them same as you …all our animals are free …living a natural wonderful life…that fox sits up on the hill watching and waiting for a quiet moment…I do have empathy for Mr Fox too ❤
Amy, I am a fan of curtains...ONLY if when they open, no part of the window is covered. It requires a bit wider curtain rod. Minimal coverage of the beautiful stone surrounded windows.

The basket idea for the light is clever. If that doesn't work check the brocantes for rustic chandeliers. I've seen some that would look nice.
