    As an elevator mechanic, I will say that the door close button definitely WORKS if there is one and if it is not broken. If the elevator has a large load capacity, then the time that the algorithm will keep the doors open longer. The button is needed to reduce the wait. There are special operating algorithms where this button is necessary.

      Glass just like plastic is recyclable but there is one issue, and that is coloring of the container. Both plastic and glass come in colored containers. Granted sodas are more typically shipped in clear glass making it the best for recycling, there are containers of other colors that must be separated because the colorings won't burn away in the crushing and melting processes. Plastics are even worse which is why recycling plastic is generally like the faux buttons in this video, placebo. Just like glass, plastics have to be separated by color, and that becomes a considerable chore that only increases the cost of recycling. And since the return on the majority of recycling is minimal or nonexistent, it's just not as cost effective to do so anymore. Sad as it is.

    We used a mix of Coke and concentrated Kool-Aid in the Navy to remove oxidation and corrosion from brass drains and fixtures. The substance was colloquially referred to as "bug juice" (because green Kool-Aid is thought to be stronger, though we used it because it was vile) and was so acidic, it bubbled away the nasty stuff quickly. This made shining brass a breeze!

      I don't know when you were in the Navy.. But, in my experience in the mid 90s there was powered drink and it wasn't kool-aid. We called it bug juice when when mixed and drank it. We did use the powered form to clean pipes and metal. It could also burn skin if left too long on bare hands. At some point after 2000 they got rid of it. I know my ship in 2011 didn't have it.

      The plastic layer on the inside of the can is not to protect the can from the beverage, it is to protect the beverage from the can. All canned drinks have a plastic layer on the inside,this is not to avoid them to corroding the can, but to avoid aluminium to change the taste of the beverage, even wine, beer and canned coffee this almost not acidic (if it is good) has it (canned coffee is very popular in Japan).
      Coca-cola has phosphoric acid the very same ingredient used in rust removers, but not in a quantity that would corrode the metal (it would take years), although it reacts with rust and it is good to clean chromium coated surfaces as oxides are far more reactive with acids. In Coca-cola site there is a list of myths about Coke: they say there are better products to clean rust, but they don't deny it works. I prefer vinegar small things it takes a little time but it works perfectly (that has about 5% of acetic acid much much more acidic than Coke) and...it is cheaper.

      @robtapp6400 9 місяців тому +7

      Yeah, I am not sure which elevators are ones where the door close button does not do anything, I think this is a big urban myth or those elevators were reprogrammed specifically for that button not to work. The ones in my building, and pretty much every building I have worked in, do close the door quicker than just waiting after a floor button was pushed. Many elevators do not close the doors immediately after pushing a floor button, and I know this might shock people, that is because there might be other people still getting on the elevator after the first person on pushes a floor button. While the doors have a delay, which in my elevator's case is the same after pushing a floor button and not pushing a floor button, the doors close immediately upon pushing the close button. I have yet to be on an elevator where the doors close immediately after a floor button is pushed, or where the doors do not close if a floor button is not pushed.

      @@DravenGal It depends on how the elevator is set up, but that button is there for a reason, and there's always a way to make it work. There is also usually a lock cylinder that uses a key that often has 2 or 3 different positions. Not sure how much has changed but the old ones used to stop and run on the key switch. Back in the days before computer modules, everything used to work on relays, limit switches, and floor switches. The floor switches would not only illuminate the light above as you pass each floor, but would also trip the relay corresponding to the button you pressed powering the motor to stop the elevator at the floor you selected. There is a way to bypass the floor switches but it takes more than one button. The door call button actually activated the same relay to send the elevator to that as if you'd pressed that floors button inside the elevator. By holding the door close button and pressing other buttons you could manually operate the elevator and even stop between floors if you need to. This is a function that emergency personnel and elevator mechanical technicians alike use. I'm not sure if that's changed anytime more recently with the computerized controls, but that's how the old ones used to work.

When you push the button, you may have to wait for your time slot before the light becomes green. If the button is not pushed, the pedestrian light will stay red in the corresponding time slot, so cars can turn easier (no yellow pedestrian warning light).

    The crosswalk buttons DO do something, it's just not what you think. They don't change the pattern of the traffic signals, but if they aren't pressed, the crosswalk signal won't change when it otherwise would.

    • @adamb89
      @adamb89 9 місяців тому +7

      It's probably a regional thing. There's one intersection near where I live that comes to mind, where the light only changes if traffic stops at the light, or if someone hits the crosswalk button. If the light changes due to traffic, the crosswalk light stays on "Don't Walk" and the light cycles crazy fast, like 5 seconds, just enough to let a couple cars through. If you DO press the pedestrian button though, the light will change for like 30 seconds.
      Other times I've seen busy intersections where during the day they're on a strict timer and the buttons do nothing, but at night they behave like the intersection I mentioned before. Staying mainly green in one direction, unless someone hits the button.

    If they haven't already, Be Amazed should do an episode on packaging that rips off the customer. Liquid soap in pump bottles is my current annoyance. The way the bottle is designed, 2-3 ounces of the product is regularly left at the bottom of the bottle. And I understand that they make that little convex area on the bottom to help the bottle stand up. But inside, it's wasting product. The only way to get it out is to unscrew the pump top and WAIT for the small amount to descend. Or, add water to it, which makes the product less effective. I'm sure most people throw out those few ounces but, honestly, it's so annoying. Why don't they flatten or even make the bottom (interior only) concave so you get all the product? I'm sure if you thought about it, you'd find many other items that are badly packaged.

    The "power" button, is actually the standby symbol. On a switch, the 0 represents no power, and 1 represents power. If its a single button for power on/off, it's a 1 inside of a 0 (no break), indicating the button cycles from power off to power on. If the 1 is breaking the 0, it represents that you switch between power on and power mostly off, or standby, meaning there is still some power running through the device. For example, if you pressed the power button on your TV remote and it actually turned the power off, you wouldn't be able to turn it back on with your remote.

    Here in FINLAND we have intelligent traffic lights. They have buttons which really work so cars don’t have to stop when there are no pedestrians. In the case the pedestrian cannot push the button, the lights change but you have to wait for some time. My Canadian uncle was thrilled because green lights were changed automatically when I was driving.

It is there for emergency personnel, but it also works for everyday use on certain controls. It can also be turned on or off on newer controls. Just push the floor you want, though. If anyone walks in after you push the floor button, it will reset a timer typically, so there is that, too. They aren't just a magic box that goes up and down

    In my city, they removed crosswalk buttons at all high traffic and downtown locations and set them all to have walk lights turn on automatically with green lights. All residential areas have crosswalk buttons and work on a two timer system. One long timer and one short timer. The crosswalk button cancels the long timer when pressed and sets the light to change at the close of the short timer, changing immediately if the short timer already lapsed. There are also a few lights that will only change if the crosswalk button is pressed spread through the city, mainly at high traffic locations near schools and community centers or long roads with few intersections.
