This is how the national anthem should be sung. No fancy vocal customizations. Just power, emotion and respect.
José Feliciano started that
Definitive - an exemplary performance. Heartfelt, respectful.
Such a difficult song to sing. I've only heard Meatloaf do it right.
His beautiful soul, now in Heaven.
Absolutely!
Kind of ALOT of reverb
No endless runs... no falsetto screeching... this is how it's done. Bravo Meatloaf, you will be missed.
You don’t know music.
@@daniel-1998 and you do ? how so ?
I've been screaming for almost 30 years about how perfect this performance was...so nice that people are now finally giving it the recognition it always deserved
I know right! I'm just an Australian but this has made me cry more than once over the decades
Up there with Whitney and Marvin
Drn Will,
I hear you loud and clear, my friend!
Totally agree and I'm from England
No way 30 years?!?!
One of the greatest Tenor voices to ever sing.
Rest In Peace Meatloaf, you are loved by millions. Incredible voice
Meat Loaf
Meat Loaf (two words)
Rest in Peace. You took our anthem and sang it without embellishments and the pianist played it as written. Classy and ever so powerful.
I don't think anyone could have said it better than you just did.
What a beautiful voice, this was so breathtaking, It brought tears to my eyes. One of the most beautiful versions . Kathy Eury
except that it was written as a poem, not a song
@@PaulA-ns9te that is correct
Rest in...What?! *google* oh, your´re right! ;(
So beautiful to see a time when Americans loved and respected their country.
Total RESPECT from this Veteran! This is how it should be done.
Jack Black’s impromptu rendition was seriously impressive too. Rumor has it he wasn’t scheduled to sing it, but the scheduled singer couldn’t make it so he volunteered. He didn’t do any wacky stuff like he usually does. Just did a straight-shooting performance that might be my favorite of all time

1/21/2022 ...... I come to this place to celebrate his life and send him on a journey to a better place. The man left it all on the stage and never held back. Condolences to his family, friends and fans. Rest In Peace, Meat Loaf....
Well said
Rest In Peace meatloaf
Same! 🇺🇸🙏❤💙🤍
Amen
This is so well said! I’m crying here. He gave everything he had. Every single time. Love n hugs.
The best national anthem I've ever seen performed by a male singer. the ultimate power, the ultimate passion, the ultimate truth.
It’s got nothing on the entertainment value of Fergie
That was the best.
Amen brother.
Exactly, and Leann Rimes may be the best female to sing it.
The late Luther Vandross also kept it real...and I'm pretty sure Meat Loaf enjoyed Luther's rendition...also.
The best performance to date, no stretch, no reach, just great.
Have u heard Steven Tyler’s rendition?
The exact opposite nd according to the comments he was the best singer to have sang that song
And all Tyler did was a disrespecting disaster.
It’s just patheti.
@@martiwest2594 Yeah, Tyler’s version is in good company with Roseanne Barr and Fergie of the BEPeas, pathetic, disgusting and disrespectful pretty much covers it.
I love his intense look before he sang . Rest in peace bro !
One of the best renditions of our National Anthem ever performed.
I'm English john but have cousins in Tennessee & California but that is the best version i have ever heard
Listen to Whitney.
There's a rendition with the sound of someone shitting over it and I think that one is easily the best.
You are wrong in my opinion (coming from South Africa): THE best rendition.
@@jo-lynnherbert590 he is the best then Whitney. They both are the best at singing the anthem
I was there.... there were people in every section wiping tears off of their face, and even some children's faces! Stunningly awesome ! Great memories....
I think more people were patriotic in those days. More love of flag and country...
Every time I watch this I wonder how amazing this was for everyone there!!
Thats awesome im glad you got to see it
@@josephdockemeyer4807 they were
You’re capping I was there also and nobody cried except maybe you. People cringe. Everybody was cheering. The video didn’t do it justice
WoW! Gotta say... this is now my favorite performance of our Anthem! And he did it totally classic, with no fancy embellishments. Meatloaf _HAD the chops!_
This still gives me chills down my spine. Best and most respectful rendition of the Anthem ever.
The melody treated with respect and delivered powerfully. I'm a Welshman but this song always gets me when its performed like this
Agreed. Hate when a performer fucks it up just because they think they can make it better by doing it their way. They usually fail miserably. This was excellent.
@@archr610 An anthem should be delivered the way it was written.
The words and the values they represent get lost when the singer starts making it about themselves.
Well, when it's sung as was written, it actually tells a story from the final battle of the fledgling USA and England.
Many lost their lives, but that Star Spangled Banner was continuously held high.
And, I agree, some singing it, for lack of better word, 'bastardize' it.
Marvin/Michael Lee Aday sung it as should be.
One can almost feel the reverberation of bombs exploding at their chests during the line "and the bombs bursting in midair".
We Americans, regardless of where our people came from, are very proud of that anthem!
~Joe
@@kevinhamilton6256 It's always stirred my soul but when I watched a video about why the words were written I was in awe.
Amazing poem about incredible men laying down their lives for their land.
Thank you and pray for us as we pray for UK.
Best rendition of the National Anthem I have ever heard. So sad to think that voice is silenced. My deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of this amazing man. He helped write the soundtrack of my adolescence...thank you Meatloaf. We'll all miss you so much.
Like Freddie, the voice isn't silenced, the music is still there and will be forever.
@@Grendel2912 truth!
This is how to sing our National Anthem. Straight up, powerful with honor and pride. No fancy frills. Makes you proud and thankful to be an American.
I am British and have no real connection with the US, although one of my grandmothers was born in New York, but this national anthem moves me emotionally every time I hear it. This version was fabulous.
I am German and I feel the same when I hear it
Amazing voice, and sticking 100% to the melody, as this piece of music deserves... perfect! Compare this to the so-called, no-talent "divas" that ruin it with their improvised wailing and screeching.
Just say you like his version. No need to tear down someone else’s interpretation of the song. There’s no right or wrong way to sing it.
Yeppers, them divas always butcher the national anthem. Like they think they are making a hit song out of it
@@monicanapier4211 Fergie's version was incredibly wrong on all levels
@@MegaHannahman yea she missed the mark.
@@monicanapier4211 "There is no right or way to sing it" What does that even mean? That makes no sense at all. Of course there is a right way to sing it, there are notes and dynamics and everything written right on the music to make sure you know how it goes. What you said is ludicrous.
He made the world richer with his presence
and He made it much a lesser place in his passing, a piece of the wonder and magic left with him.
He was one of a kind. I will always treasure his music.
I’m not American and I would have to say that the USA National Anthem would have to be one of the most emotional and inspirational one I have ever heard. When it is sung like that by the legendary Meatloaf it sends shivers down my spine.
The most moving performance I have ever heard, gave me chills! Beautiful. We have lost a great man 04/07/2022
What an amazing job !!!!! And no one was kneeling wish we could go back to those days
This performance means even more to me today than it did 11 months ago. Rest In Peace, Meat Loaf..
Yup
....what happened to you 11 months ago?
Every time I watch this ( which is often) I can’t help but smile and be awe struck at his absolute mastery of his voice. This performance, along with so many of his other performances, is a real masterpiece of vocalization.
Read somewhere that Meatloaf was classified as a Heldentenor - Heroic Tenor - in opera, and after hearing the anthem performed thus, pretty damn hard to argue with that classification. Meatloaf brought everything to every performance, and routinely left audiences in awe of the music. Not himself, but the music.
I was quite sad to find that he'd passed away.
Holy cow that was awesome! Never heard till now! He will be missed by many! Rest In Peace Meatloaf!
honestly never heard it sung better this is amazing , needed some democracy and freedom in my mind, - canada 2022
I just found it myself. Awesome.
Holy Beautiful
I knew the guy could sing, but damn ... Mind blown.
What a beautiful rendition. Goosebumps!!!
I like the part where he knew all the words. 😀
Take note, this is a true musician.
There was a time, when only REAL and TRUE talent got to Record Albums, get on the Radio, and get on Stage to perform in front of people ..
Best rendition of our National Anthem I've heard - respectful and powerful.
Have you heard Whitney? She nailed it too! Jack Black also did a fantastic job back in 2011! The fact that someone like Jack Black and turn off the comedian in him and do a fervent performance of the Anthem speaks loudly to his talent and recognition of when its time to be funny and time to be serious.
@@Kyu7Whitney lip synched it.
Meatloaf received a well-deserved standing ovation. Take note, Fergie this is the way the Star Spangled Banner should be sung.
Exactly Fergie sounded like a Pregnant Whale in Labor and giving Birth to a Baby Whale when she sang the National Anthem
Maybe have a look at Meatloaf AFL 😂 Probably the worst performance of a musician at a sport match in history.
Let Roseanne know too.
@@mizzury54 Well, since someone spoke of whales... could it be Roseanne is actually Fergie's DAUGHTER?
I'm British and even I wanted to stand up and cheer!!. Epic rendition of your anthem - God bless Meatloaf.
@SAMCA San Andreas so hot
@siras2 Yes British are even more racist than Americans.
Perfect! You are SO missed Meat Loaf!!
This wasn't a national anthem, this was a god damn religious experience.
Best comment....ever.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Totally agree, it's hard to watch without welling up inside.
Yes!!!!
WOW!!! Perhaps the best SSB performance I’ve ever seen!
Rest In Peace, Meat! 🙏🇺🇸
This is truly one of the best renditions of our National Anthem ever performed.
It's meatloaf not meat
Remember the time when athletes actually honored the national anthem. That was beautiful. Thank you, Meatloaf - you will not be forgotten. Rest in peace.
Wait, they dont?? What do you mean?
You know when you find yourself saying what could be quotes from the south park 'member berries, unironically, it's probably a sign on brain bleeding or something
This is the best performance of it I have ever heard. Rest in piece, legend.
That was one of the most beautiful national anthems I've ever heard!! Go Meat!!
Amazingly Beautiful!
That's how you sing an anthem. Brilliant rendition by a brilliant artist
This made me cry. What is especially poignant was the respectfulness shown by the players; their caps over their hearts😪😢😔. Meatloaf’s rendition was flawless. He sang it beautifully and respectfully 😔😔😔🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸, the way it should be sung. Thank you, sir. Rest in peace❤️❤️👏🏻👏🏻
That is one of the finest things I've ever heard rest in peace meat. I don't think the angels in heaven could have done a better job for our national anthem
ridiculous
Damn! Meatloaf really nailed this!!
This was when his voice was still top notch!
Today as I right this comment there are 74 likes which was his age when he passed away this week.
I'm not even American but this gave me goosebumps.
He killed it....we all miss Meat.
I'm English, and even I stood up with my hand on my chest for this. Michael, as always, effortlessly knocked it clean out of the park.
We are one. My great great grandparents helped my great great grandparents off the boat at Plymouth Rock. They were American Blackfoot Indians and English.
That's such an American thing to say. Thank you.
@@patriciaotoole6508 You're welcome.
Huh?? 🤔 WHO is Michael?
Michael?
His real name IS Marvin Lee, but he used Meat Loaf as his stage name, he was a GREAT Singer and will be SO MISSED. 😢 💔
@@Military450Veteran Yes he was born Marvin, but he legally changed it to Michael in 1984.
What a great rendition. I love how he took that breathe right before he started.
He knew what an honor it was to perform this. Very powerful.
Getting in the zone, that's all
cause he does not just sing.... he SINGS with emotion... every time.... you can hear his soul...
So many people say so and so did an amazing rendition of the National Anthem... this right here is how it should be done! No jumping all over the place with notes or holding a note for way too long. MeatLoaf's vocal was strong, but not over the top.
He Had Such A Good Voice
No lip synching or backing tracks on this performance. Meatloaf wins. Fatality. Flawless victory.
I recently read that even at the height of his fame, Meatloaf coached Little League baseball. The dude loved the sport.
He liked football too. Apparently he had this rant one time about how one of his musical influences was the quarterback Johnny Unitas. I miss Meat Loaf.
The kids called him coach Meat!
Oh my, i have been a huge fan of Meat Loaf for 40 years, this is the first time I have seen this performance, wow, maybe my favorite performance of the National Anthem of all time. I can imagine that God himself along with the whole host of heavens angels were standing proudly for this performance.
I agree . I had not heard it before . He did a great job.
The 90's where just awesome. Rest in peace maestro Meatloaf.
Heck too bad that everybody on this planet couldn’t hear this sung by Meat Loaf!
Needless to say it would bring a tear to even those who hate us!
By far the greatest rendering of our great national anthem ever performed by man or woman! It must be noted however that what set the tone for this monumental performance was the very Noble and brilliant hymnlike and very understated piano accompaniment supplied by Meatloaf's pianist!!! It was all of these elements coming together that produced this performance of the ages!!! God bless you meatloaf!!!
Sorry but Alicia Keys definitely delivered the best Star Spangled Banner rendition. And she played her own piano at the same time
@@daust126 THAT was amazing
It would be difficult for me to choose between this and Whitney Houston as the best. They're both amazing.
This is how I chose to remember Meatloaf, that man right there.
What a voice, what a man. Thank you for the music Meatloaf
I’m not positive , no no I am positive I thought that was the best performance of the national anthem I have ever heard. He did a fantastic act of honoring our country!
I was watching the game when he was announced, I thought " this should be interesting.."I was wrong..IT WAS EPIC !!
Still today I believe my favorite rendition of the Banner.... Still gives me chills.
What a stunning rendition
Absolute best performance of ANYONE singing this wonderful song. I have always loved Meatloaf. He will be forever loved and missed. A national treasure has left us. Thank you for sharing yourself with us ❤️🙏
I'm not American but listening to Meat singing this sends shivers down my spine.I had the pleasure to see him in concert in Belfast 94. Gone but never forgotten!
I never heard Meat do the national anthem before. I don't know how I had missed it! It was amazing! One of the best renditions ever, by anyone, male or female!
If you close your eyes,
You can see those stars and stripes beautifully standing. Thank you Meatloaf❤
I remember those days - it was OK to love your country, it was OK to be white or male or even BOTH! You could make a joke without someone claiming to be a victim. People occasionally admitted they made a mistake instead of just blaming corporation with deep pockets. People went to prison and might actually serve most of their time before early release. You didn't have to fear being alone in an office with a female employee - what a wild ride it once was.
We didn't know how good we had it,did we?!?
Rest In Peace, Meat Loaf.
The most moving rendition of the Star Spangled Banner ever.
You will be missed, but your music will live on. You're a legend. 🇺🇸
Man his voice is amazing. This is how the National Anthem should be done.
even though this is 2022 I just heard this and it does him proud .. A true tribute to the National Anthem

That’s the perfect voice for such a song! Rest in peace, Meat Loaf!
Finally sung by someone who understood the words and sang accordingly. Beautiful.
I'll never forget Meats beautiful voice.
Legend has it that they forgot to turn the mic on. He sang unplugged.
The best I've ever heard!! So adorable how he takes that deep breath before singing...I think it's the only time I've seen him anxious before performing :)
What a voice! What pitch! What range! What power! I've never heard our national anthem sung so well!!!
BEAUTIFUL, PERFECT, POWERFUL THE BEST JOB OF THAT EVER DONE. MADE ME CRY.
What a unique and lovely voice.
Epic!! What an amazing voice and sang the way our anthem should be sung. 🙏
He did this while on his big come back during the Bat out of hell II album and tour, he reminded people what a huge(no pun intended) talent he is, and if you seen him live his recorded vocals don't show what the man can do live, he is a consummate performer!
Check out his entire 1993 concert from Cardiff, Wales, also when he just came out with "Bat II"... I was only 5 months old when it was recorded, and I must say, it's a fantastic show!! He opens it with the song that really introduced me to his music, when I was 12: "I'd Do Anything for Love". I heard it in a Dr. Pepper commercial, and not long after, bought that CD, and loved it!!
What a power stroke of vocal genius......Absolutely magnificent..............
Best NA I ever heard, what a good person he was, saw him in college, he was operatic, amazing...
Wonderful; the best rendition of any celebrity I ever heard. Straight ahead with no vocal gymnastics; WONDERFUL.
It's like this epic song was made for Meatloaf.
He was amazing on this,wow!
the 90s were the pinnacle of our species and this video proves it
