It's fantastic but The Moon, I Want You To Know That I'm Awake / I Hope That You're Asleep, Space Song, A Case Of You and Impossible Soul are all up there too
Lucy Dacus is an astoundingly good songwriter. This is like 2 perfect songs packed into one. The best writer of the Boygenuis trio (although they ALL kick ass), in my humble opinion.
I agree. She has a really strong voice too. They are all great but in my mind Lucy is just a tiny bit ahead of the two lyrically and vocally. It's very unfortunate that she may be the most underrated.
@@TalkAsSoftAsChalk I had the same thought. We are really talking about three remarkable singer songwriters so the standard is so high. But yes, she has such a powerfully expressive voice and this song is heartbreaking.
@@TalkAsSoftAsChalk interesting to read what other people think, I personally think Julien's song writing is the greatest - her use of metaphors is beautiful
this song is so good that whenever i listen to it i feel a little like i'm losing my grip???? like it shouldn't be possible for me and this song to exist on the same plane of existence
I've listened to the album version of this maybe 500 times since it came out. I still think it's a perfect piece of music/song structure/lyric writing/story telling.
I was going through a summer depression. The only thing I could get myself to do is bike and solve jigsaw puzzles. I listened to this random playlist and this song came up. I realized that summer was not that bad. At least i got out of the house and drank tea, at least i did the minimum. It was the best i could do. I would listen to this song over and over, loving every second of it. So whenever i listen to this song now, I remember that one summer. It takes me back and reminds me i can get out of my periods of depression. absolutely love this song
This is one of the few songs that truly show the artist’s truth. 100% authentic, raw emotion, experience and, that was strong to keep to themselves, or to strong to admit that they had no other choice but to tell it in song.
The first time I tasted somebody else's spit I had a coughing fit I mistakenly called them by your name I was let down, it wasn't the same I'm doing fine Trying to derail my one track mind Regaining my self-worth in record time But I can't help but think Of your other in the bed that was mine Am I a masochist Resisting urges to punch you in the teeth? Call you a bitch and leave? Why did I come here? To sit and watch you stare at your feet? What was the plan? Absolve your guilt and shake hands? I feel no need to forgive but I might as well But let me kiss your lips so I know how it felt Pay for my coffee and leave before the sun goes down Walk for hours in the dark feeling all hell Don't hold your breath Forget you ever saw me at my best You don't deserve what you don't respect Don't deserve what you say you love and then neglect Now bite your tongue It's too dangerous to fall so young Take back what you said Can't lose what you never had I feel no need to forgive but I might as well But let me kiss your lips so I know how it felt Pay for my coffee and leave before the sun goes down Walk for hours in the dark feeling all hell You got a nine to five, so I'll take the night shift And I'll never see you again if I can help it In five years I hope the songs feel like covers Dedicated to new lovers You got a nine to five, so I'll take the night shift And I'll never see you again if I can help it In five years I hope the songs feel like covers Dedicated to new lovers You got a nine to five, so I'll take the night shift And I'll never see you again if I can help it In five years I hope the songs feel like covers Dedicated to new lovers
I listened to the studio version of this song many many times and while it rocks, the distortion in the second section of this performance is absolutely incredible. Goosebumps all over again.
The first time I heard this song I was instantly amused. It’s so real and it’s hard to find a song that captures a heart ache. That distortion part is bad ass!
Steve McQueen it’s a bit late, buy thank you anon! 4 months passed, now im playing this again for the same reasons too. I hope everything will be better again soon! Hope all is well with u during this time.
@@garlicgurl 4 months later, hope everything is going well for you. We all know why each other come to these songs so I hope the shared emotion can extend past the pain and into the security

Lucy is a freaking force of nature and a force of rock! Everytime I see her perform it reminds me of seeing The Pixies live, just some of the same simmering underneath turbulence that always feels like it's about bubble over.
Love it. I love the climb it goes through and its exposition. Hearing it live now, I feel it seems difficult for her to get loud. I'd love to hear it--in anyway she can pull it off.
ive done and checked all the live recordings of this, while back. yall know they all good. and unique. subtle and powerful. alla that. how can she keep bringing it tho? emotional stuff. forget the collabs. forget the shipping. just go join the fold with ani difranco? she the only one can handle this kind of raw ass talent. no theory. just facts and yall know this shit.
amazing song and amazing voice but they did her dirty with the audio in here, mic was too quiet n smthn was imbalanced, didn’t do the power or control she has over her voice justice
this is the best break-up song ever written
It's fantastic but The Moon, I Want You To Know That I'm Awake / I Hope That You're Asleep, Space Song, A Case Of You and Impossible Soul are all up there too
I also recommend "I hate This Fucking Town" by John Grant

💯🖤
Yes. And it hurts when you can relate it.
this song escalates and escalates and just climaxes so flawlessly... i can’t dude :’(
That's what I love about it, it builds exquisitely!
Yes u ritte

well i definitely climax when i hear that last bit of the song that’s for sure 😂
"The first time I tasted somebody else's spit, I had a coughing fit." What a great fucking line
“don’t deserve what you say you love then neglect” gets me everytime

how is this song 6 minutes long it goes so fast
No seriously ive listened to it so many times that it just feels so short
this song is so good that whenever i listen to it i feel a little like i'm losing my grip???? like it shouldn't be possible for me and this song to exist on the same plane of existence
I feel like her and Angel Olsen should definitely do something together.
She does have a supergroup with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker.
that would be so legendary
And Sharon Van Etten

this song is so beautiful. I wish Lucy's microphone would have been louder though. Sometimes I felt like her voice was kind of drowned out by her band
I’ve fallen out of love with my boyfriend and this song found me. I love it.

exact same situation
I can't get enough of this song. It resonates with me in such a deep level. Watching Lucy perform it brings tears to my eyes.

I feel no need to forgive but I might as well
But let me kiss your lips so I know how it felt
Pay for my coffee and leave before the sun goes down
Walk for hours in the dark feeling all hell
Don't hold your breath
Forget you ever saw me at my best
You don't deserve what you don't respect
Don't deserve what you say you love and then neglect
Now bite your tongue
It's too dangerous to fall so young
Take back what you said
Can't lose what you never had
I feel no need to forgive but I might as well
But let me kiss your lips so I know how it felt
Pay for my coffee and leave before the sun goes down
Walk for hours in the dark feeling all hell
You got a nine to five, so I'll take the night shift
