Lyrics:
Looking out the door
I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations
As their shoes fill up with water
Maybe I'm too young
To keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you're on my mind so
You'll never know
Broken down and hungry for your love
With no way to feed it
Where are you tonight?
Child, you know how much I need it.
Too young to hold on
And too old to just break free and run
Sometimes a man gets carried away,
When he feels like he should be having his fun
Much too blind to see the damage he's done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that, really,
He has no one
So I'll wait for you and I'll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return,
Or, will I ever learn?
Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late.
Lonely is the room the bed is made
The open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one
Who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep
That won't ever come
It's never over,
My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles
When I slept so soft against her
It's never over,
All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over,
She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever
But maybe I'm just too young,
To keep good love from going wrong
Oh lover, you should've come over, yeah yeah yes
I feel too young to hold on
I'm much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind
To see the damage I've done
Sweet lover, you should've come over
Oh, love I've waited for you
Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late

“Broken down and hungry for your love, with no way to feed it” kills me every time I hear that line.
My favorite line is "My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder." 😭❤
Wonderful
Absolutely ♥️
Dude this line hits sooo hard
That's where he really starts to build it
Nobody can sing like that unless they've been touched by crushing heartache.
EVERYTHING you said!!! yes!
REAL TALK….IYKYK
🙏😔
If he wouldve stuck around to duet with Amy Winehouse... i imagine their resonance wouldve solved everything and healed everyone
Not sure about that, he might have become lost in a sea of drugs with her
Thank god needs some singing lessons shite
He's the tear that hangs inside our souls forever.
I actually started crying when I read your comment...that is exactly what he is to us all. Tears.
😭
😢best reply I need not look no further 😊
Best line and yeah, he is. I mean there’s another one for me too, but he’s also there
for real
“Maybe I’m just too young to keep good love from going wrong” is a lyric that rings in my ears to this day
I cried way too many times listening to this album... and Live in Chicago is killer. Glad to be able to listen to this in a place of peace now
Roger that Hillcar... btw, don't forget to turn them wheels against the hill or she might get away.. ;)
But too old to break free and run. Those two phrases combine to make the most profound line in music history imo
Too young to hold on, but too old to just break free and run..
Fuck
how in the universe was this man actually real
most accurate comment on any of his videos
+Chloe Lambert (: ahah
Chloe Lambert the universe was once GOOD
He was and I was lucky enough to see him live once. It was at Maxwell's in Jersey City. Nothing but a pos box of a club. But I was standing 17 inches from his guitar as he played. I was in freaking awe! Maxwell's didn't have a backstage so all bands filed off the stage from the front. As we were making our way out the only doors to the stage space, Jeff slowly put his arm around me as if for support. He was in a completely different head space. We walked out together with our arms around each other's shoulders. I shook his hand and told him that was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. He thanked me modestly and we parted ways. He lived a block away from me in NYC so I'd run into him from time to time, which was really cool. Never did get off my ass to see him play SinÉ considering it was only two blocks away from me. Oh well. He was amazing and I miss him every day.
He was So Real, he seemed fake.
i don't think i'll ever get over how beautiful this song is

Definitely not alone in this.

Probably because he was more relaxed singing it live?

@@jimmyjoejeeter2366 or just different emotions on the moment…
That's because he can actually perform and cared about music, alot of "artists" lack that cause I don't think they really care about how they sound.

Whew... I almost forgot to watch this today
Have you watched this today?

Every time I come to see this video I remember this comment
She really should've come over.
No brainer
Cuz it's not too late... This song has blown me away since hearing it in 2010. I think anyone can relate to the feeling of getting your hopes up. Wanting to see a very special lady. But then for some reason it doesn't happen. She cancels. Or you do. But then later on you both are talking, and just as easily you want to invite her over, since to you time isn't much of a priority when they are around. It warms the fucking soul.
Totally
Follow your gut
Lol
Cos it's not too late.
forever jealous of anyone who got to see this live
I did. No way to describe it honestly just transcendent.

This live of this masterpiece..
I was in this room when this happened. I won tickets from either Q101 or WCBR. My band got booked for the *later that night* show, not on the same bill as Jeff Buckley. I actually met Jeff after his show as we were loading our gear into Metro. I made the mistake of thinking I belonged on the stage he just played on. It was SO REAL. Someday, there might be another *like* Jeff Buckley, but there will always be ONLY ONE Jeff Buckley.
Yes! Same. He would have been so incredible.
The fact that the drums start on a downbeat in the middle of a bar is BEAUTIFUL. True musicianship. Buckley to me is the quintessential 90s Indie Star.
yes!
Jeff is timeless...
Starts on (up beat) 4 but the intent of what you are saying is spot-on. Couldn’t have had a better start.

"My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder. She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever"........I can't think of an artist in modern music who has written better lyrics than these.

The first time I ever heard this song I got the biggest eargasm I have ever gotten. I cried. I laughed. I got goosebumps. I didn’t know where he had left me but it was amazing. I still get goosebumps. His music is like pure sex if you could put it in chords and record it.
🤍
It's one of the few songs that made me tear up. That's how powerful beatiful this song is.
Beautiful and painful. So much incredible emotion and talent this man had

Damn
I would do anything to have seen him live.
I crave to see him live, it almost physically hurts that I can't :(
+sm7299 Would have been amazing!
Here to tell you I saw Jeff play live 3 times in NYC. Once at Roseland Ballroom then the Knitting Factory and again at the Mercury Lounge for a New Year's Eve performance. Seeing him live was as close as I got to having an out of body experience! Jeff was utterly mesmerizing to watch live and I feel so fortunate I got to see him play. They'll never be anyone else like him ....
Debra A. Sweet!!! Great memories!
Me too........ 😢
His best song. Awesome harmony, structure, arrangement, instrumentation, lyrics, vocals, everything.
The best song of a already perfect album.
Yes.
One of his best by far but I think Last Goodbye is better. It's a matter of opinion like it is many times.
I like "Forget Her" too
don't forget "Everybody Here Wants You"
Barely 16, my friend had just got her drivers license and we blasted out of the suburbs. It was a summer evening and we went to the cool college coffee shop and Jeff was playing. I had never heard of him and the place was packed. His show, was electrifying, it was soo good, it rocked every one of us to our core and I handed this letter of gratitude to him on the break. He asked me and my friends to hang for a minute when the show was over and we all talked for a little while. My friends and I were utterly spellbound but he was cool like a gracious and magnanimous older brother. We were broke high school kids and he gave us each a tape of his album for free. What was he like? He was sweet, his energy and behavior was totally appropriate with 4 teenage girls who were clearly crushing on him. He had mesmerizing depth and soul to him and I recall he was kind, humble, open , genuine and strangely I had the impression he could see us and understand us.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful story!!!!
Thank you! @@Jeannek4493
that's really sweet
That letter probably still exists somewhere, collecting dust and posthumous memories among his long-abandoned possessions.

Very accurate. It's so bittersweet. But insanely beautiful.
it hurts to know that they weren’t really well known when jeff was alive, he’s a prodigy and now people are realizing it after years
This isnt true he was a big name in his time.
He was a big name for those of us who appreciate all that is beautiful. Just remember, the average person thinks Madonna writes good lyrics.
@The TamoraMay TRUE
@Saara i said weren’t really well known and his music selled yeah but one not close as much as now and 2 he literally was not well known
Sometimes the best artists are that way
There's something beautifully addictive and destructive about Jeff. We never met, and we never will, yet I miss him deeply, all the way down to the bone.
This song in particular is something that you could only say it must resemble that which is considered divine in an universal sense.
Your so right ❤️
Que bellamente expresado está todo esto. There's something eminently ethereal in everything he wrote and sung. Unique among the unique, he is.
You know those types of videos or the question if you could bring a dead celebrity back who would it be. For the longest I had an entire list for that because art, particularly music speaks to the soul doesn't it. I finally settled for Jeff. It hurts even more thinking that he only had one album and some other songs. It's just unfair.
@@corinnae.7877yep- he has a posthumous album out but it was compiled by his mother and producers. i really wonder what that album would look like if he had the chance to finish it

How can he express in 8 minutes more than what I'll feel in my entire life?
Because artists were touched by God to communicate and translate the human experience for those of us who can't
Maybe you're gay and don't know it yet
Ralphie Shostakovich great conclusion 🙄
Touché
Easily one of the best songs ever written.
Definitely the most under-appreciated
My favorite line in the whole song is "Lonely is the room the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in. Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him." Just so much room to assign your own meanings. I look at it like this, he let go of someone cause of the weight he realized relationships can bare on a man, he was young and like all young men had to let go of someone they may have truly loved. He says burning in the corner is him pretty much, the window was his exit or way out, and he had to take it, because the rain outside or exit from the love was his only solution to burning alive.
It's what everyone wishes they could write. Those lyrics are the most wistful, longing and romantic that can exist. Simple as said.
That's not how I see it mate. The room is nice and neat but betrays what's he's really feeling. The rain coming in, are like his tears wetting the room carelessly and the burn is the flame in his heart for her. There was miscommunication, they had a fire together, but it wasn't meant to last because both were too immature at the time to admit it was truly special something more. This song screams so much regret. -from another musician
@@noyb6200it’s all about interpretation. neither of you are wrong
I'm pretty sure Jeff fell in love so badly that his heart was totally smashed and through his pain, he sent a message in every song we hear.
+Erika Escalona YES!!!!

Well put. I both want to have that same experience and want to avoid it at the same time.
This man is a legend vocally as always, but do not overlook his guitar playing - those chords he chose and played were absolutely gorgeous. RIP Jeff - thank you for everything :)
Agreed
However, the original record is better than his live performance for this song.
+ozan özteker Well, that's up to the listener :)
You're right, he had a talent for gorgeous and creative chord progressions.
Indeed, & as perfectly unique his playing is here, he also proved himself to be a virtuoso lead player (shredder?) at his early gigs, so all the more impressive is his dropping the chops in service to the music.
thank god she didn't come over otherwise we wouldn't have this masterpiece
I just discovered Jeff Buckley today having grown up a 90s fan. How in the world have I never heard of him until now? He’s unreal. You don’t get songwriters this talented often. May his memory be eternal +
Me too, I just discovered him last week. I grew listening to Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden but never heard of JB. He is awesome!
Blame rock radio that plays the same hundred songs every damn day for decades!
Loved him since the 90s. Check out the album Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. There are some incredible tracks on that.
When he sings, "I didn't see you before, but I see you now..." it really gets to me. It's like it was too real to put in the recording. Wonderful performance.
+Aaron Palabyab It's about Jesus.
owenhunt of course not.

Thank you for saying that. I felt I was the only one who got it.
"Sometimes a man must awake to find that really, he has no one." Beautiful words.
The emotion he conveys through his singing is breathtaking.

Very few musicians had the whole room dead silent when they would play. Jeff sure had that ability, taken far to soon.
his voice is so fragile and touching i’ve never heard and felt anything like this before
The "it's never over" verse always breaks me. Miss you bud, 20 years to the day...
Currently lying on the ground in my room with my earphones. I closed my eyes and I felt true peace.

Que esperas para compartilo xd?
His mother is CLASSICALLY TRAINED. FYI
I love it when he adds the extra lyrics to it, shows the still writing passion to it, like a journal
'my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder' - fucking breaks me in half every time.
He reaches in and literally rips my heart out of my chest, but I cannot stop listening no matter how badly it hurts. His voice is mesmerizing...and you can't take your eyes off of him while he is breaking your heart. One of of a kind, that one.
aw well said
Indeed. Well said. This song literally tears me apart.
I keep coming back and breaking my heart all over again by listening. This song is addictive, sad, and strangely comforting.
That guitar bit where it drops suddenly hits deep
How DARE those waters that took him away
maybe angel belong to heaven
Eventually all things merge into one
and a river runs through it.
The river was cut from the world's great flood.
It runs over rocks from the basement of time.
On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops.
Under the rocks are the words
and some of the words are theirs
I am haunted by waters

He was reportedly wearing boots when he got in the water, and they filled up with water and kept him under.

The guitar intro alone is lovely
Lovely and lonely.
Necro Orcen I know what you mean dude! Guitar you tubers don’t usually do lessons of this kind, it’s usually shred scale runs or bar chords... this type of playing is just felt out by the player. Jeff’s guitar playing at the intro is just ear melting those chord changes man... just such a nice added sound to make the song and performance that much fuller...going to learn this right now lol
Hi!I agree... the intro is perfect!!
I would love to learn it...any idea about the chords?
I must’ve listened to this song thousands of times over the years, and yet here I am, listening again, shivers running up and down my body and fighting the urge to burst into tears at the sheer beauty of it all. Truly, truly mesmerising and haunting and beautiful and sad, all at the same time.
Yes and you can return again and again and it's simply timeless. He was so pained to get it down prefectly and so it remains prefectly, still.
Don’t fight the tears. You will never win that battle when it comes to listening to Jeff. Just submit to the beauty
"broken down and hungry for your love, with no way to feed it" - I felt this .
It’s elation it’s anguish
Oh.....the quivering as he sings, this is coming from a very real place. It's almost like we shouldn't be watching. And the the slight head tilt while the audience applauds, a moment of personal reflection? He allowed us to see into his heart. I've heard this song many times but watching it now, I'm going to need some time to let it all settle.....
"She's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever....". s there a better lyric in ANY song? I doubt it. What a loss to human kind.

The thing that is so magical ( and out of this world) about this song is how every word that he sang and the chords are perfectly arranged, as if it was a personal hymn of our own insecurities. I don't have words, the beauty of it is almost undescribable I don't care it still makes my chest hurt I'm gonna break...

This song is exceptional in every way, but the lyrics really top it off for me. Jeff was a phenomenal lyricist. Utter poetry.

I listen to this day and night. When I am in school I sing his song in my head wishing to be listening to it. I can't explain it but his vocals his voice it's just so comforting!!
Lyrics
Looking out the door I see the rain
Fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations
As their shoes fill up with water
Maybe I'm too young
To keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you're on my mind
So... you'll never know
Broken down and hungry for your love
With no way to feed it
Where are you tonight?
Child, ya know how much I need it
Too young to hold on
And too old to just break free and run
Sometimes a man gets carried away
When he feels like should be having his fun
Much too blind to see the damage he's done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that
Really he has no one
So I'll wait for you, love
And I'll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return?
Oh, will I ever learn?
Oh-oh, lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late
Lonely is the room, the bed is made
The open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams
He had you with him
My body turns
And yearns for a sleep that won't ever come
It's never over
My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over
All my riches for her smiles
When I've slept so soft against her
It's never over
All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over
She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever
Oh, but maybe I'm just too young
To keep good love from going wrong
Oh-oh-oh, lover
You should've come over, yeah, yes
Yes, I feel too young to hold on
And much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb and blind to see the damage I've done
Sweet lover, you should've come over
Oh, love, well I've waited for you
Lover, lover, lover
Lover, love, love, love, love, love, love!
Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late
He connects with and brings comfort, hope and solace to every vulnerable, lonely, beat down, teased person struggling to make sense of a life filled with inequity, inequality and abuse.
His death is the most tragic loss when it comes to music.Rest in peace our dear Jeff...
My ex hubby introduced us (Jeff and me , his music i mean) and after 1 song I fell in love and I understand allot. I mean that I understand his pain and demons. Got the same shit in my life/youth. I love his music and to me he's an angle 🕉❤
Έτσι είναι...
Greatest voice in all of rock. Freddie was the best, but Jeff’s ability to express such pain and emotion is unmatched. Only people that come close are Chris Cornell and Robert Smith.
Very true, and Eddie Vedder singing Black
Layne
Eddie vedder too imo
Do you like elliott smith?
