boygenius: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Nov. 16, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- The group is new, but all of the members of boygenius - Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers - are Tiny Desk Concert alumae. In fact, Julien has been behind my desk twice before. So when the usual nerve-racking session was over and I shouted out, "So, is it any easier the second or third time?" I had to laugh when I got a resounding "No!" from all of them. The notion of playing in broad daylight, in an office, without having your voice coming out of a PA and with an audience close enough to touch is not only intensely intimate but also intimidating. That's not only true to these three, newly collaborating, under-25-year-olds. It was also true of, say, Ralph Stanley (who was older than their ages combined) when he sang a cappella behind my desk.
But what came through as these three heartfelt singers performed was the strength of their songs. My first attraction to each of them as artists was the songwriting. In fact, the title track to Julien Baker's first album, Sprained Ankle, is what got me to a show of hers early in 2016, which introduced me to the opening act, Lucy Dacus. (You can hear them tell their tale on an upcoming All Songs Considered.) Boygenius only has six total tunes, all from their just-released, self-titled EP, and here they perform half of that catalog. What you get at the Tiny Desk is a frailer version of these more fleshed-out songs from a band that is likely quite temporary.
For their closing tune at the Tiny Desk, "Ketchum, ID," Julien, Phoebe and Lucy each take a verse. Lucy's verse ends the song with the line, "Let's dissolve the band, move to Idaho." And the chorus to the song, in stunning harmony, echoes the mileage of the lifestyle, how they live and how they met: "I am never anywhere / Anywhere I go / When I'm home I'm never there / Long enough to know."
This trio is a special gift to us all in 2018.

Now that you mention it, at least on that first song, it does kinda sound like there’s a filter applied to her mic.
@@danopticon EQ cut, it's missing some lows and highs. It's sometimes called the telephone effect (at least some of my professors called it that). Very subtle here but yeah.
@@greyleaf She's singing very far away from the mic, the guitar sounds very muffled too, it's simply because the higher frequencies don't reach the mic as much at this distance, and you can notice that the middle singer's voice sounds fine, it's because she's facing the mkh 418

I honestly don't understand how Julien is able to enunciate so well while barely moving her mouth.

@@emilychu396 Phoebe's are Me and My Dog and Ketchum, ID, Julien's are Souvenir and Stay Down (though I think all three of them had lyrical input on each song, because the lines Phoebe sings on Souvenir about living by a hospital show up in Halloween as well)
I'm not a pro but as I understand it there were written songs and collab songs. Me & My Dog was a solo PB jam, Ketchum was a group thing, no clue re: the rest.
Also, before I forget, Salt in the Wound is such a great song.

I don't normally watch Tiny Desk unless it's an artist I follow pretty closely, but I was bored and took a chance on this one, and h o l y s h i t. This was absolutely, completely, entirely _mesmerizing_ . I don't think I can recover. Sometimes you lose sight and forget where all the beauty in the world went, and then you watch something like this, and it helps you remember.
They sound like mountain mist sleeping on winding roads and voices calling you home. More ears need to be blessed with this. And if you feel the same, share it with everyone and anyone you know. These are the kinds of artists the world needs to know about.

Dull answer but shes off axis to the mic so has that warmer, less clean sound. Shes also a great singer with tonnes of colour to her voice, but yeah mic positioning does a lot

I love these women so much, the attention to care and detail in their music shines through in everything they do, it's summed up at 09:59 where Julien starts mouthing the lyrics to Lucy's part. They all deeply care about what they're playing and I find it incredibly inspiring.

listening to this band feels the way I imagine listening to the first Crosby Stills & Nash record must've felt for people who were my age when it came out. Three incredible musicians coming together to put out an album that feels like the definitive statement on the genre. I've been a huge fan of these musicians individually for a while, but even I didn't expect them to put an album this incredibly good.

These three ladies have all blown my minds individually. I discovered Lucy about three years back and Julien the year after, was wowed by both. Then was introduced to Phoebe last year through the Better Oblivion project--loved her so much that I immediately bought her solo album. And now this. I'm in heaven.
