- Having (supposedly) determined that the fix to my sunroof was going to be an easy one, I bought some cheap parts, and decided to make the attempt. However, things aren't always as they seem. As I quite quickly found out. I break down my thought process, find out that these roofs break all the time, and also learn that the repair really is just as involved as we thought.

I just replaced those yesterday. You just need to lower the headliner and unbolt the rails, then you slide the mechanism to the rear after disconnecting the motors and you are done. Everything can be replaced and then you slide everything back from the rear of the rails. It all took me about 4 hours
4 hours? How many W205 have you done this repair? That's very little time to get this job done with quality, like broke nothing and left no parasite noises.

Did you use a donor rail to swap the parts after dissembling the rails? If you do this while leaving the motor, is reprogramming necessary?
Absolutely brutal common issues on w205's. Really preventing me from being a repeat customer. Thanks for trying, now I gotta get a quote and see if its worth my time to tear my interior apart 😂
I have a 2015 c300, I had the same problem about two years ago. I took it to the dealer, they said they could fix it under warranty. But it is gonna take about a week because Mercedes needs to send a special technician that is familiar with the fixing process. I don't have the time to leave the car for that long, so I didn't fix it. I have been driving this car for about two years now. Luckily, my sunroof is still working and looking properly. The only problem that I have is the squeaking sounding from the sunroof when go over bumps.
You sat $1300 is an expansive fix, I wish that I could get my roof repaired for that price because all the way down under here in Australia, I have been quoted by number of different sunroof repairs places, anywhere in between $3000 to $7000 for that exact same repair, and i know i can get the parts I need for under $1200. Some people are just criminals, ...... I will tackle it myself even if it takes me 3 months

I feel your pain. I'm 600 miles from home and my sunroof won't close. I get it pushed closed but the back won't go down and I don't think the manual override will do it. On my way to find tools to try. Hello Harbor freight.
My C230K track just snapped, cracked, kinda exploded on the rail... lots of plastic parts, clips broken, @9:48 your bent thingy was removed by my skilled hands with random plier thingies I happened to buy from HF&T the week before.

My s550 has this same problem, I just got quoted at 1k to fix the rail. After reading these comments that doesn’t sound so bad but I’m thinking they may have to replace both, it only makes sense if the other could go bad as well
At $1k, I'd throw my money at them.
The book calls for both rails to be replaced, if I'm not mistaken. But, if they can do it only replacing the one, and your motor is good (no other hidden problems) $1k is a steal.
I have the same issue with mine, but my clip complete broke off while I was driving on the highway. I had to remove the entire panoramic roof. Luckily I had a garage to park in, but a part so crucial should never have been made of plastic. It's ridiculous considering many of us are having this issue and these are "luxury" cars
When I did my panoramic roof I changed the tracks and tubes and it was kind of easy for my w211
Almost 2000$ with a shop account would of costed maybe around 3000$ if I bought with list prices
What did they quote you for? I ask because that's the dollar amount on my quote.
I was hoping you fixed it, lol. Same issue on my car, but quoted bt 2,500ish bucks for mine. PLUS don't forget, if it broke before due to some sort of design flaw, it'll break again down the line, so it's pretty much 2500 bucks down the drain.

This is way it's very important to grease the rail to keep it from binding. Binding is most likely the possible issues as the motor is very strong and any binding on the rails will cause it to stick instead of sliding. I now that most people that have sunroofs, never grease them once they own the car and not longer bring it to MB. If it does happen under warranty, it's always best to take advantage. I have a W205 for over 6 years now and never had a problem with my roof as I do grease it every year or according to MB.

I was able to install the clips. First try I broke one of the clips second try it workerd very easy once you figure it out.But now that the clips are installed it still doesn't work.I will need to get both rails replaced
Same for me ! 1000€ in Greece. The parts that broke cost about 30€ from Turkey. I think I will try to modify it to fit incident the rail.

Ridiculous that Mercedes would manufacture such fragile components for a moonroof... Mine broke too, and it was properly maintained and greased by the dealership... Because of a plastic piece broken, the dealership wants over $5,000 to replace the entire moonroof assembly. We have to fix it ourselves... great job mercedes!

I think I bought this very MB used, from the US. I am finding all these same issues, including the front right bumper lip that sticks out. I think I now own this car.
My sunroof on that right side is also slightly open. Same issue with the rail guide, it shattered into the hole. Also the roof misbehaves, doesnt close the shades as well. W205 poor quality. The front passenger side chair rattles so loudly, it's annoying.

Hi Joshua, can you show how to remove the wind deflector in steps please? i have mine with the arm broken which makes the wind noise when driving over 50...
My w205 won’t tilt in one corner. I’m unable to slide the glass back. How to I tilt the passenger side in order to get to the screws to remove the glass? Also I saw a video where the technician replaced the parts in the track without reprogramming. He replaced all the parts except the motor.

Why can't they at least design a new guide rail that doesn't use plastic parts so that this doesn't happen over and over again????? If this happens every 4 years to W205s and it costs people $3500 each time at the dealership, that's $72/month AVERAGE spent on sunroof repairs alone on this car. And you know it's going to happen!
👆🏻 this right here. This boggles my mind. I don't understand how they haven't designed a better system yet. Nor how they haven't been forced to recall it. Maybe a class action lawsuit is needed.

My wife says we leave it the way it is since i have a q5 with pano roof. Also, mine sits completely in cause i cleaned off all the debris inside.
Nice man! I think mine doesn't sit all the way in simply because there's nothing to hold it down anymore.
I'll likely order the new rail in the next few weeks, and have my brother help me. We'll spend a Saturday taking everything apart and doing the job. I want to make sure first I've had enough time to get whatever tools we need, and also to go over the instructions thoroughly. It's summer, and I want a functioning pano. Haha.

@@johnguajardo1747 tienes que hacerle un pequeño sacado donde entra a la rueda por el lado desde el frente hacia atrás y con un desarmador plano empujarlo fuerte sin romperlo !

Exacto un sacado a la parte nueva por dentro donde engancha al centro , hay que hacerle un sacado de cómo 1mm i empujarlo del frente hacia atrás ! Sacando el panorámico por que da mucho más espacio !!!
Solo se desgasta uno ! Lo ideal es poner el del lado de adentro primero que entra sin problemas y después el de afuera con un pequeño sacado en la parte interior solo del centro hacia atrás !

hi. I have the same problem with my car. I want to have a manual. but ebay is banned in my country. Where can I download manual as pdf or pc program. If the purchase is made on the link you provided, they will give me a download link.
The person selling it seemed to have it hosted in their own server. There is another place that I believe had something of a manual, but these aren't PDFs. It's an entire computer image you have to run in a Virtual Machine.

hey is not that difficult to take the head liner down i did myself but my problem is that i cant open the sunroof the electric motor wont open it so im stuck on how to remove the sunroof if i cant open it, have to be a way to do it but havent find out how

There is room for a socket wrench up under the light panel. You can manually open or close the roof from there

Hello, I'm facing the same problem, but in he left side. The sunroof starts to bounce in irregular asphalt. I took a picture of it, and the dealership told me that the Slide Shoe is broken. I"m owner of a 2016 c250 coupe.
Seems like the same issue. How did you solve it?
The slide shoe is actually a different part than what I had break. The slide shoe should actually be the part that I purchased that wasn't correct, and I think installing those is actually much easier than what broke on mine, but I'd have to double check.

I bought it from ebay, in Brazil they are charging almost U$400 for it. I paid U$95. MB dealers here are non sense.
@@Diariodopatologista either repair is pretty involved. Is it the plastic triangles that broke for you, or that large piece in the back?
@@joshua.sutherland it's the plastic part that the triangle connects.
It's the part that slide in trail.
The triangle is fixing the glass, but not connected in the trail, letting it bounce.
Mm, ok, then it probably is the same part that I had break. MB is going to be selling you the entire rail (because that's how you're SUPPOSED to fix it), which is around $400. That has the rail and everything that attaches to it, and you'd have to put in the new rail, and then attach the glass to the new rail.

There is no part number, as these parts are not sold by MB. There is also no good way to install the "triangles". The factory fix is to replace the entire rail. Some people have reported success wedging the "triangles" in, however, I have not done so myself, and you risk damaging the rails doing so.

There isn't exactly a repair kit per-say. I believe the part number will also differ depending on vehicle. It does change based on which side of the vehicle the rail needs to be replaced on.

This is sounding awfully painful - but so glad you're going through it. By now, I wonder if you've done it yourself, or taken it to MB?
Likely going to take it to MB. My efforts have lead to the roof not opening anymore, so it's probably gonna take a bit of work. If it were still opening, I'd probably tackle it myself, but at this point, I'd rather them break something than myself. 😂

That's the best quote I've ever heard. If you've got a place that can really do it for that price, jump on it.

@@OOcean0228 yeah, the problem is, you can't just replace the clip. The entire rail has to be replaced, and often times both rails need to be replaced. Very poor design choice.
From everything I've researched, quotes usually come in no lower than $1400, so if you can get it done for under $1000, you'll be sitting pretty good comparatively. At this point, I'm anticipating mine will be around $3000 to repair. 😂🤦🏻♂️
think to make custom clips to add on rail with out take out nothing!!!!
I spent quite a bit of time trying to think if there was a way to 3D print a new clip, but wasn't able to come up with a solution that would actually work/I'd feel was reliable.

Agreed. With how faulty they appear to be, I'd expect they'd have come up with a replacement. Was pretty disappointed to hear that they haven't.

For those who blame Mercedes just keep one thing in mind , the main reason those plastic parts break is that due to the roofs design . If you look at the roof when its fully open the rear of the glass is hanging in mid air above the back of the cars roof with NO support , the rear support unlike the previous series does not move as the glass slides over the top of it . When your driving on rough roads car park speed bumps etc every jolt and vibration is transmitted to the roof and the glass is then placing strain on those plastic parts which leads to breakages . Then the last bit is that those AMG models have a much stiffer suspension and when combined with larger diameter rims with very low profile tyres it also adds more vibrations etc , same for those people who upgrade their wheel tyre combination its just adding to the problem .

UPDATE: Mercedes service rep just called, Aus $6,400 too replace both rails, motor and labour!!! He told me this is not a common issue with the model.
This happened to me yesterday, it’s the second time I’ve opened the sunroof in the two years I’ve owned the car (a 2015 c250). As I opens the roof I heard a loud cracking noise and both sides had broken parts strewn all through the rails, the plastic guides in pieces! I’m in Australia and waiting on a call from the dealership I dropped her off at - expecting a huge quote as parts are more expensive in Australia. Bloody car is 20 days out of its 2 year “pre owned” warranty too...
I'd double check, because if you look at forums and such, it's a very common issue with this sun roof design. So common my dealership keeps the parts on stock, and has the job down to like a 4 hour job. It's definitely an expensive repair though. The parts are the affordable part though. It's the labor cost that makes it so much.
