So many rock songs fade into oblivion after their six week run, but this song still survives and even thrives in the 21st century - 50 + years after Muswell Hillbillies was recorded. Brilliant.
A great great song, far more applicable to today than when it was written. The Kinks are incredibly underrated and under appreciated. Ray is one of the greatest rock songwriters period.
A bit late to this thread, but I was prompted by a conversation in the pub this pm about RD and the Kinks. I firmly believe he should have been the Poet Laureate a long time ago.
Wow, he sounds great!! Such an incredible song writer. First "rock" cocert was The Kinks in January 1982 at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland! I'll never forget it! Fantastic!
I've seen the Kinks 16 times between 1975 and 1990! FABULOUS!! Definitely one of THE VERY BEST bands EVER!!! Get well soon Dave Davies we love you can't wait to see you again!
I'm with you guys. I've been playing his songs since 1966. Q. What's the first rock and roll song you taught to yourself? A. Tired Of Waiting For You. I've high-fived Ray Davies a number of times at 2 shows over the last 7 years. The last time, he was hamming dancing a lot.I can never get enough!
That moment you are listening to a song about the modern woes from 50 years ago and you see how things have gotten so, so much worse. It's the most rocking funeral dirge for a free society I've ever heard.
The first version of this song I ever heard was actually by the Beat Farmers on a live album they put out in 1990. It was great! What a songwriter Ray Davies is.
One of my all time faves! I got to meet him before his concert in Nashville in 2006 and was able to stand at the front of the stage. He is such a master musician/songwriter/singer. Such a nice guy and I just never get tired of watching him, with or without the Kinks. Incredible performance here!
I agree with so many on this thread. This was stunning! I've always loved this song but this performance makes it all so much better and created a new portal with additional meaning. Seldom do I listen to the same song and have it wipe my brain clean of preconceptions like an etcha-sketch.
One of my favorite Kinks songs. Muswell Hillbillies was a bit of a shock to many who anticipated a "rockier" offering from Ray and the boys. It was none the less one of the easier albums to sing to while on the road.
Yes indeed. Is my go-to sing-along Kinks album. Especially the title track. I don't know how the song got buried by history but what a great rendition this is.
For all the great songs and great albums the Kinks put out, Muswell Hillbillies is still my favorite and 20th Century Man is my favorite all time Kinks song. Ray needs to write a 21st Century Man song as a follow up in 2023. It time. The world is weird now that it was when this was written. Horrible Thought: Get AI to write it, but that would defeat the whole purpose of the song.
It was a good idea to change the structure of the song like this. The quiet part that starts off this performance is the bridge on the record. I always felt the song came alive on the record from the bridge onwards, and this performance bears out that notion.
I owned a 'Kinks Greatest Hits' 8 Track tape in 1980 that sounded absolutely excellent inside of my 1979 Cadillac Sedan Deville with upgraded Delco stereo system (and my very decent Webcor Home System). I'm 60yo now and the memories are superb. Saluting Ray Davies. My 'anthem' at the time...
@@1blastman So you misunderstood the lyrics. Ray is saying he prefers the old writers and painters to contemporary ones. Not very punk. And 1970 was early for "the punk movement" anyway.
This is a great song that is timeless. This is the 21 century and nothing has changed. Plan to play the song in tribute to Ray Davies. Too much agrivation. What happened to the Free world?
HERE COME THE PEOPLE IN GREY. This brilliant song makes me think of Princess Diana. She derisively called the Royal bureaucrats, "the men in grey." Great song. Great band.
STILL KINKIN' OUT 27 FEBRUARY 2023 AND STILL HAVE THAT 150% GENUINE ROCK 'N' ROLL MUSIC IN MY BLOOD DAVID DAVIES FROM DAVE TEE IN AMERICA MY TRUE ROCK BROTHER🥁😎🎵
This is how I feel about the 21st century. I still live in the 20th century. The world is passing me by and I dont care. Im very comfortable where I'm at and I'm not going anywhere else.
It would be a great concert venue if that were ever to occur. Funny how I periodically, over the past 30 years, thought the same as you wrote. Especially whenever I heard Sir Mark Knopfler play the rarely heard masterpiece " Iron Hand". Which, for some reason would make me think of this masterpiece. The way that Ray Davies re-arranged the verses makes perfect sense as originally folks at the "Record Company" probably had a say in how the "delivery" of this particular song should be structured! (My own opinion). I am fortunate to have seen them a number of times in my life and concluded that they are one of the best bands to ever grace our ears!
One of the greatest songwriters ever. Written in 1970. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I feel the same with Ball of Confusion by The Temptations
Don't disregard Townsend and Waters
That's a trifecta
So many rock songs fade into oblivion after their six week run, but this song still survives and even thrives in the 21st century - 50 + years after Muswell Hillbillies was recorded. Brilliant.
Same with Ball of Confusion
God save the Kinks!
Unique.
A great great song, far more applicable to today than when it was written. The Kinks are incredibly underrated and under appreciated. Ray is one of the greatest rock songwriters period.
I 💜 Sir Ray!
His lyrics are so ahead of his time!
Brilliant. Ray Davies is not only a rocker but a poet (in the genuine sense of the world), so clever, so fun, so smart.
A brilliant song, way ahead of it's time. Saw them many times.Sad invited to Woodstock.Politics. great solo version. Top shelf.
A bit late to this thread, but I was prompted by a conversation in the pub this pm about RD and the Kinks. I firmly believe he should have been the Poet Laureate a long time ago.
Written 50 years ago;
Sadly True NOW !!!
One of rock’s best songwriters, under the radar for too long, and deserved better.
Greatest song writer of all time.
Muswell Hillbillies was always my favorite Kink's album, and I read that it was the one he enjoyed making most.
Crosstie Ten
First heard in 1972 and still fealt 2022.
What a gem of an artist. Very thankful to have seen him in person!
Listen at 4:12 !!!
What a voice ... makes my knees turning to jelly! :-)
Wow, he sounds great!! Such an incredible song writer. First "rock" cocert was The Kinks in January 1982 at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland! I'll never forget it! Fantastic!
This song still drives hard - right into the 21st Century!!!
HUGELY prescient song in 2022 - same in 21st century, dearest Ray. How right you were.
Ray performing one of the Greatest Songs of all rock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have to get away from the people in gray!
Unbelievable, Ray is Great as always, but the lead guitar is amazing!
Prophetic lyrics… & the music still rocks.
Ray will always be eternal & relevant.
One of the great rock songs of our time. Have listened a dozen times and just love the energy, the piano, Ray, the slide, wow.
I've seen the Kinks 16 times between 1975 and 1990! FABULOUS!! Definitely one of THE VERY BEST bands EVER!!! Get well soon Dave Davies we love you can't wait to see you again!
Genius..one of my favorite albums as well.
I'm with you guys. I've been playing his songs since 1966.

A. Tired Of Waiting For You.

Kink for the Kinks! SO GOOD to hear and see Ray here on youTube

Brilliant comment mate !!! 💯✨
FECKING GENIUS CLASSIC BRILLIANT INCREDIBLE PAY ATTENTION KIDS.
I had the honor of meeting Ray in Heathrow Airport.
You know how they say don't meet your heroes?
You'll be disappointed.
Not true.
'Ray is the man.
For me the best one ❗😇🎼 a real poet lyrics and music...see and heard him at the OLYMPIA.
The best one for me too. The greatest

True artist, Ray Davies
He's still going!! Seen the Kinks Live in 79 Cleveland .. One For The Road Tour, Awesome!
A true genius! Thank You Ray Davies for capturing the truth of our situation in all of your wonderfully poetic songs! I don't wanna die here either!
I agree with so many on this thread. This was stunning!
I've always loved this song but this performance makes it all so much better and created a new portal with additional meaning. Seldom
do I listen to the same song and have it wipe my brain clean of preconceptions like an etcha-sketch.
He sounds as good as ever!!😁😎
Wow! This is fantastic!
You keep all of your smart modern rockers...I'll take Ray Davies and the Kinks
One of my favorite Kinks songs. Muswell Hillbillies was a bit of a shock to many who anticipated a "rockier" offering from Ray and the boys. It was none the less one of the easier albums to sing to while on the road.
20th century people took it all away from me.

Well, then, form your own band and record it yourself and post it on youtube and we will let you know what we think.

Oh you gotta see the man. Saw him in concert a few days ago. This tune came as a great surprise. Magic!!
A thrilling performance of a Kinks classic. Thanks for posting.
Man ------ that's the good stuff.
Such a fantastic tune and the words totally ring true in the 21st Century, even more.
Vincecouk They sure do!♥️
ray davies is the best
a showman, song and dance man, poet, political philosopher, comic, all around performer--Ray Davies!

I always loved this off Muswell Hillbillies
but hearing him do it acoustic
at the beginning there
wow
Love the Beatles . . . love the Kinks! Sure wish they would get back together for a tour. I'd love to bring my kids to see them.
Ray Davies is an underrated songwriter.
Not any longer, I beleive!
The prophet musician Sir Ray Davies.
Great live performance of this outstanding Kinks song. I think this is from the Austin City Limits show.
In 1970 it couldn't have been popular to say "Keep all your smart modern writers/painters."
It was. 1970 was the early days of the punk movement.
@@1blastman So you misunderstood the lyrics. Ray is saying he prefers the old writers and painters to contemporary ones. Not very punk. And 1970 was early for "the punk movement" anyway.
God I love this Man, but He needs his brother Dave! lol
great man! great song!
the Background Band is great good Job all Round

This is a great song that is timeless. This is the 21 century and nothing has changed. Plan to play the song in tribute to Ray Davies. Too much agrivation. What happened to the Free world?

So much like Mark Knopfler! I just love your playing and songwriting!
It would be a great concert venue if that were ever to occur.

2021 Now I really feel like that. It's like we've entered the twilight zone.
