Like many here, I watch a lot of golf videos on YT. For entertainment, tuitition and tips. I found the intro to this particular enlightening, stating it how it is that how each viewer should interpret may need to be different. I had a lesson today and those comments and the points in the video have really enhanced my understanding of the instructions and drills I was given and I'll use the points from this too. Great video, more like this please!
Ideally, for me the lead knee and trailing elbow begin the downswing simultaneously as if they were linked by an invisible chain or rubber-band. This way the left side / right side / top half / bottom half of the body are actively involved straight from the start. Lead knee rotates from 1 or 2 o'clock (right-handers) toward the target, while the trailing elbow (the part that faces the target at address) begins to move into where it needs to be in the impact area. All other actions / motions / balance just work to support these two primary/elemental actions, resulting in a unified swing.
Wonderful video Andy! Great explanation and drills. Finally a good right side initiated transition; all other transitions I have tried to date ultimately have me coming over the top to varying degrees. Great job, you have a new subscriber!
This was an excellent demonstration and explanation Andy on the golf transition! Being that I swing the club in to out, this is the move I have been working on for quite sometime now. I definitely know when my right shoulder down together with the arms don't come down, but out away from the body because my shot usually ends up over in 'left field." Now, all I have to do is get my bottom half pressure moving diagonally forward onto the left leg with a proper lead hip rotation over the left leg and I have a golf swing. It was a good lesson for me Andy! Thanks for the input and help!
After viewing my swing via video lately, I’ve found I’m in the right position at club parallel to ground, but I haven’t got myself into a great impact position. Probably a lack of glutes back, shoulders opened type thing. So this is an area I’m working on at the range/ home. Thanks for the tips!
Great vid and as you said the speed of the downswing requires timing of all components in 0.3 seconds. I work on one stage at a time in my home net for muscle memory. I also use vid apps to assess. Im currently looking at wrists at top of swing and club face as I tend to cup when wanting more rotation. Enjoy the course vids too, like to see "fix" shot decisions from difficult lies... Cheers from Oz..
Awesome video Andy. There’s nothing else I need to know about transition. It’s all in there including drills. Just need to recover from flu so that I can start the drills at home. 👍
This is exactly the video I needed. I like to focus on my arms dropping first because everything else seems to fall into place. I can't feel the weight shift, my excuse is I'm too stiff 😂. I'm also amazed at how much distance I've gained from rotating my shoulders a bit more went from 7 iron 120 to 140-150
Amazing video mate. I've been struggling with this so much. Lateral movement is what I've been doing but it's never been explained like that before! I'll practice this at the range! Thanks brother!
@@andycartergolf Big time mate. If you could do another now for Driver I'll be done haha.🤣 I seem to be really steep and topping the driver all of a sudden but when I connect well it's a great shot. The bad ones are big pull hooks / snap hooks or just outright fatted.

Really good stuff. I'm a frustrated 16 handicapper - often playing more like a 26er as I don't spend time on my game. I've challenged myself to totally rebuild my swing with an aim of getting to single figures at least once, and having an approach that is consistent and age appropriate 😂 (I have shot a few rounds between 4 and 6 over around 25 years ago when youth and flexibility overrode a dodgy technique... sadly that time has passed!!). This was really well explained - I just need to be patient and build on the clear phases. Thank you!
Be careful when rebuilding, maybe you don’t need to do so much changing! Also check your stats with chipping pitching & putting, that could save 10 shots straight away
@@andycartergolf will do. I've picked up a lot of bad habits though, so hopefully going back to basics will set the foundations back again. Definitely worth looking at my chipping and putting...I used to chip in at least once every couple of rounds, whereas now my up and down stats are more up, up and hopefully down....
Hi Andy, love the videos but finding all the Pete Cowan tips a bit confusing, even the Danny Maude video everyone is talking about with Pete pressuring down the right hand, spinning down the right hand, what is the left hand suppose to do, what position is it left hand supposed to be in, the spiral staircase is that still a thing. Thanks in advance Andy.
Andy! it’s hard to know what to apply to my own swing. Is there a way to analyze your own swing or do you just go by ball flight numbers and other basic data? Or compare your own swing to one much better than your own?
Take a golf lesson from me is the easiest way and guaranteed to help you understand your swing better!! Otherwise you need to understand golf impact factors to self-diagnose based on ball flight and only then it reduces options on what might be the issue. And never copy another swing
Cool, except that the lateral movement towards the target starts during the latter part of the backswing. The lateral movement involves the lower and upper body.
I experience that pushing the lead hip actually leads the elbow and arms to be lowered automatically. Then you start your turn. Really the lead hip, to me, controls the rest.
At 8mins 35secs you talk about a lot of lateral movement. I identified a lack of adequate lat movement as a problem. I felt that at my finish I'm not totally on my front leg. Until I saw a slo mo of Scottie Scheffler's swing. There's very little downward pressure there which is why he is able to slide so much on his feet. His kind of movement of the whole body is confirmed by high tech swing recordings of the best players. Weekenders like me need far more lateral movement imo, timed correctly. It removes a lot of the concerns about over the top also in that the downswing isn't initiated by the hips opening and the hands following outwards. If you can move laterally forward while in the backswing phase and you succeed in letting the arms come down "behind" you, you can play really good golf with a natural, predictable draw. I've found that playing good scores (under 80 for me) depends on me hitting draws consistently. Plus you must chip and put really well. Off topic I know but I use my 8 iron for just about all chips and once you get used to how the ball reacts and rolls you'll keep the shorter clubs in the bag more. One single duffed chip and that sub 80 round is gone. Those are the margins when you're a 5 and 6 HC.
Correct. The most highly skilled golf athletes on the planet have perfect sequencing! The majority of amateurs do not, so this has been adapted and communicated in a way the average golfer can understand. Once improved the sequencing will always be a movement of the hips snd upper body together
I couldn't disagree with this more. You do not lead with the arms or the shoulders EVER!! You lead with the the pivot move to the left leg (hips) then everything else follows. Leading with the shoulders or arms first absolutely makes no sense. Even in your video your first move is shifting your weight to your left side activating your left hip then the arms or shoulders follow. If you don't move your left hip first THAT is when you'll come over the top.
What about the 90% of golfers who struggle with a slice and lead with their shoulders moving towards the ball. What youre saying is right but most amateurs cant do it. They just Spin the hips and the arms get thrown out. So this addresses the common faults amongst amateurs that I have seen through thousands of lessons!
@@andycartergolf I think any shoulder or arm movement as first move will not create consistency in their swing. I agree that most amateurs lead with their arms or shoulders rotating out to create the over the top move. But the hip moving left (not sliding but rotating) will not cause the arms or shoulders to go over the top. if anything the idea of the left hip clearing will help their first move by helping it be not so severe over the top. Believe me I love Pete Cowen and especially seeing the video of the right forearm at impact totally changed my ball striking but I can't agree with this first movement. In all honesty, when I have a slight pause at the top of my swing then lead with my left hip as my weight pivots, my arms actually delay for a split second and then naturally drop into the slot. This is when I'm striking the ball the best with accuracy. It's when my sequencing is off, leading with the shoulders or arms, is when my consistency goes to hell in a handbasket. Look, it's just my opinion, I still like your videos and think you have great information and I can learn from you. It's just this particular video doesn't ring right with me, that's all. peace!
100% and I agree with you too. If I was coaching someone who had control of their transition we would work on what you're saying but based on what youre saying this tip definitely isnt for you it is for those golfers who need to concentrate on upper body movements more than lower to help transition. I do a lot of coaching on a daily basis so the tips are based on amateurs who struggle with different faults therefore need different FEELS
Good Grief -- this is awful instruction. The first move is the step of the front foot -- like when you throw a ball --- this move shallows the arms. You don't pull the arms down first.
Depends what your fault is and what your trying to correct by watching the video. I have other instructional videos recommending lower body to initiate the downswing. So rather than make uninformed statements. Challenge me with a question

Shoulders don’t turn on the same plane backswing vs downswing. They always should be significantly steeper in the downswing; down then around.
how does this relate to Pete's view of "spinning the arm and. trail forearm down'?

I thing there was a little shift toward the target
can you drop the arms too much and how can you make the next movement including hip turn in a smooth manner?
If your transition needs improving from the upper body then focus on the arms 1st but eventually both lower and upper body will move together
That's great Andy, but why does it have to be a 'secret' transition? There are no secrets, magic moves, etc, in golf. It's all on UA-cam mate.
