Amazing video thanks for sharing. Just one note for all the people.. knee bent is okay on short-game, where you need more accuracy and don't need to push on the ball (pressure). Actually knee bent is much better for approach shots, look at the pros!! This lesson is gold for full iron shots.
The video explains a lot more about transition than is commonly taught. Very informative about not letting lead shoulder getting over lead leg during the transition- only the lead hip gets over the lead leg as you bring right shoulder down..
Great video. Not enough teachers explain the importance of ground pressure during the transition. Most focus on shallowing the club, but if your body shifts properly the club should almost automatically drop into a better position.
@@Y_M1967 over sold or emphasized incorrectly. Shallowing is a great concept but it’s not typically mentioned how it’s a byproduct of the entire swing. It’s not like oh I need shallowing and lag just like that. From takeaway to downswing transition and proper wrist positioning all lead to effortless shallowing and lag. I’m glad that Carter talks about the big picture.
One of the things I struggled with when I first started golfing was initiating the swing with my arms versus with the transition. This resulted in casting the club and leading to a terrible banana ball especially with my driver. The golf pro at the course I played at happened to be watching on the first tee one day and gave me a quick lesson after I sliced my drive into the 8th fairway. After a few range sessions, I was able to achieve a fade with my driver and quite a few more yards off the tee. Later in life, I found a golf teacher that got me drawing the ball and that is my normal ball flight now. Thanks for the great tips again!
I have no problem at all getting my stomach in front of my leed leg on the downswing😂😂😂😂😂 gret explanation by the way, this i just thing i am working on, the trail shoulder pushing down is a great thought, i will definately give that a try. Thanks👍
This is pure gold. So many, me included got this wrong. We think power and control comes from arms and back leg pushing and hips rotate. Its totally opposite. Its the shifting into lead foot and push up that gives power and control of the lowpoint. At first i couldn't grasp how on earth can i hit down on the ball while pushing up until i tried it and it felt effortless and so simple. And i hit it much more solid and way longer. This should be the first thing a new player should be taught about the golf swing.
ive been playin golf since '98 n what ive discovered more than anything else is that there really is no substitute for having begun playing the game as a youngster, this actually applies to most sports. i am able to play basketball with the youngsters effectively even in my 60s bc ive played since i was 6 years old n im fundamentally sound bc of that. i played golf with a 10th grade short chubby kid a couple weeks ago who finished 3 over... unsuprisingly he had been playing since he was 5. for me fixes work for a short time then i trend back to my poorly fundamentally sound swing, it is what it is. Fortunately the short game came kinda easy for me which helps immensely. i enjoy the game and im a pretty good hacker (+11) n have learned to be happy with that n enjoy being out on the course with friends n thats what matters most to me anymore 🙂
As I came back to golf after several years off, I had to (more or less) rebuild my swing. One of the things teaching pros were telling me is I needed to concentrate on getting my hands ahead of the ball at strike and to be hitting the ground after the ball. Sure. It was a disaster…I couldn’t get my hands ahead no matter how hard I tried to “lag”. The things they were missing was ALL the stuff you have to do to get into position to do that correctly. It was like they were telling me I needed to scoop the pasta onto the plate and then add some parm to make amazing pasta. All the of the ingredients and process of making excellent pasta was completely forgotten. It’s one of the things I love about Pete (and now you) is that you are giving us all the ingredients and how to mix the eggs and flour, etc….the end result is that my hands are in the right spots at impact as a result of doing the work before hand.
Good instruction. Most instructors will tell you to not pull down with your arms. Cowan is the only one that I have ever seen that tells you to push the left side out of the way with your arms.
Oh my word another 💡 moment …. I’ve never really got the weight shift and as such I’m definitely an ‘Elvis’ hip swayer … 2 out of 2 Andy!! … thanks mate
FWIW.....If you watch Rory's driver swing (or irons for that matter) from the front on view, you can see his hands at the top of the downswing don't *just* drop straight down, but move down and importantly, away from the target as he turns. There's clearly resistance between his body going one way and his arms and hands being 'pushed back' the other. As someone who struggled with the feeling/idea of lowering the hands I tried maintaining the stretch across my chest and arms and felt like my hands were being pushed away from me as I re-centred and began the weight shift. That stretch gave me a much better feeling of where my hands were and enabled me to lower them correctly, rather than feeling they had to just drop whilst floating down behind me somewhere - which invariably led to them not going where they should. This idea really cant be seen from down the line drills, as you can tell if the hands are moving away from or toward the camera when they fall. It's less for shorter irons, but very prominent in longers ones and the driver. Rory video here: ua-cam.com/video/P3YksJdejog/v-deo.html Cheers!
This is what I have the most issue with, my golf is incredibly inconsistent atm because I really haven't got any feeling or idea of how the downswing should start. I'm going to try this on my next range session and hopefully it will help.
After a day on the range, I've started to hitting the ball flush waaay more often than before. I took around 20-30 balls to get into the new swing pattern but when you get it it's very easy to recreate.
Great video Andy. I have watched many Pete Cowan videos. Can you help make a short video in the setup? I tend to struggle with my aim, with long irons.
I am working on this, Loading the right shoulder and right arm on the back swing and make it as wide as I can . Kind of lock the upper right arm with the right shoulder and chest.
Watch Andy's swing at the 3:30 mark in the video. Notice how he does NOT hold his lag on the downswing. This is so crucial as we are taught to hold that lag (90 degree angle) as long as possible. I'm not saying we should be casting the club, the answer is somewhere in between. Just make sure you are shifting your weight and turning while releasing the club towards the ball a little earlier. Watch Andy's swing @3:30. It is such a great illustration.
Always good revisiting this move from someone like you who has been with Pete. Please consider a video on this incorporating the 45deg delivery position that Pete says is the only constant of good ball striking. I have found it works great but I'm sure my understanding is minute or possibly even wrong.
Great video. Pete Cowen is a genius. Glad to see other professionals elaborating on his technique. Quick question, on your stance-are both your feet symetricaly open or just the left foot that is more open than the right?
Hi Andy, you talk with intensity and passion but can you also hit soft shots and short shots with this move? Because my body wants to hit hard easy already. And because of the intens explanation i only wnat to hit it harder. Thanks for your video's. I just became a member and like your way of swinging
Another great video to add to the others of late. Detailed and understandable explanations in this and the others. I watch them on my phone before trying to implement them at the driving range. Keep them coming.
Great video, Andy! Thanks! Where on the left foot does the weight go initially in downswing? Left big toe? I have some much trouble sliding my hips and entire body past the ball to start my downswing and I don't get enough rotation. Thanks! Greg
Looking forward to trying this, I’m just getting back into playing, already had better results from a grip change and just need to be able to get that squeeze on the ball.. Cheers Andy 👍🏻
Struggling with my strike. Adding too much loft at impact costing me a ton of distance. No one seems to cover this problem. This video definitely helps me understand a bit more though.
At the transition it always helped for me to imagine that the lead knee and the trailing elbow (the part facing the target at address) were linked by an invisible chain or rubber-band. The downswing then commences by rotating the lead knee from 2 o'clock (right-handers) toward the target and the chain "pulling" the trailing elbow down into a proper hitting position (no casting or flipping). The imaginary chain also promotes a more unified upper/lower body action. So there's that.
Sean Clements (Wisdom in Golf) has been teaching this for 20 years. The problem with Mr Cowan's description is that breaking down the swing into separate movements can lead golfers into sequencing issues. However, Mr Clements's "club throwing" drill allows the student to learn the complete sequential movement, so they have few sequencing issues.
trying to figure this out. when you are unloading on the way down, are you transferring pressure to lead side as the club is coming down, or before. Seems like in order to unload the shoulder down to the ground, that pressure would still be on the trail foot. thx.

Watch some videos of Mickey Wright and Jack Nicklaus from the 60s and you'll see how far off the ground they lift the left heel on the back swing. The first move down is a planting of the left heel. I don't know when or why it became the norm for golfers to keep their left heel down. Lifting it is especially beneficial to golfers who no longer have the flexibility to make a good turn with the heel on the ground. It's easier on the back as well.

Yes but that bit I disagree with to be honest. Don’t forget Hogan was an elite golfer giving his feels. I’ve taken his philosophy and added my piece after 15years coaching.

@Judd @Andy Carter Golf what helped me greatly was in transition get the weight/pressure on both feet to 50-50 (with some knee bend in both) then from between about left arm parallel on the downswing to shaft parallel to ground (window), focus solely on standing up using ONLY your left leg. You will automatically have all your pressure and weight transfer to the left. Andy does demonstrate it here but without explicitly talking about it. See 4:50 mark. All the best!
Mate, you have unlocked something that has prevented me from following through with the golf club (not my underpants, thankfully) When you talked about the left knee almost being locked stopping a full turn...that is the penny dropping for me. I've been using my chest and arms to turn, but unlocking the hip so there's less pressure on the lead leg has unlocked the ability to swing through the ball and not at it! I now understand the term "it's all in the hips"...except for me it's all in the left hip
You mentioned that you want to maintain the angle in the trail arm as the arms start to move down. At what point would you suggest that angle is let out?
The release will happen at the low point of the swing which should be at the ball. That will happen if and when the other components of the golf swing are adequate. You cant just time that!
Great video, very informative. Quick question tho'. At what point should your left leg straighten, ? just before impact, at impact or after impact. Cheers.

HI Andy. What comes first. Pressure down on lead side or shoulder diwn on trail side. Is it simultaneous????
