The #1 Best in this list is probably my favorite boss battle ever. Great use of the game's mechanics, lots of variety, challenging without feeling cheap, many innovative attacks and obstacles to cap off the game, and amazing music.
Belcha always reminded me of the Flower Pot boss from Yoshi's Island. In both they push you forwards towards a pit and you have to push them towards a pit.
Belcha reminds me even more of the boss of world 5-4, Sluggy the Unshaven. In this boss battle you cannot get hurt but must throw eggs through Sluggy's gelatinous body to reach its heart several times before he pushes you into the pit.

I have a special sort of love for creators going back and updating old videos like this. I've done revisions on videos that were 1-2 years old when moving to a second channel. But seeing someone start from scratch on an older title is so satisfying! Seeing all the minute ways you've grown and improved is just a joy. I agree with most of what you've said here, but I have to hard disagree with DKC3's K Rool being 2nd worst. That fight has so much variety in it and is genuinely difficult. It's not unfair difficult though, because anyone with a bit (or a lot) of practice can do it quite easily once they understand the rhythm of it. I also really liked the idea of the metal barrels absorbing the electricity...
Mad Jack from DK 64 is a classic boss. You can't directly hit him, you have to ground pound on a specific switch you have a very narrow time window to activate. Can't be too far away from it by the time the dodging phase ends, you have to pay attention to which color tile he's on so that you don't hit the switch for the wrong space, and he shoots lasers at you when he's done trying to squash you- while you're trying to hit the switch. Plus he gets so fast that it's effectively impossible to dodge the squashing phase unless you master how to float diagonally- which has little margin for error. And in the last phase, he turns invisible. Definitely no slouch in difficulty, but it's fair difficulty, doesn't throw any unpredictable shenanigans into the mix.
I'd switch #2 and #1 just on the grounds that the DKC1 guys are *actually trying.* The Baron literally does nothing but meander back and forth and press a button.
On my first playthrough of DKC: TF, I was about halfway through the game when I stopped playing it for about a couple of months. When I resumed, I'd forgotten about the intro cutscene where Lord Fredrik is shown to be the main culprit behind DK Island being frozen in ice. So, when I got to the fight against him, although I did notice it was a bit tougher than anything prior to that point, I didn't realise I'd just beaten the final boss until the credits rolled. It goes to show how I feel about him: he doesn't feel like a final boss at all. Also, as you mentioned, the hitbox on his back is beyond flawed. Landing the last couple of hits just isn't a fun experience and doesn't feel rewarding whatsoever.
Honestly I don’t understand why he hates colonel pluck, yeah he’s slow but that’s for a good reason, the battle is about going under this guy’s legs and you only have to hit him 3 times before you go to his next phase.
Honestly I liked Frederik a lot, though I'm not super sure if it's because of the spectacle at this point, considering I was an easily impressed teen at the time. I think it may have been that I never really reached a point where the cycles felt like tedium, or even possibly nostalgia blindness, since I haven't touched the game since launch, but even so, I remember it pretty fondly. Tiki Tong on the other hand I found miserable to slog through, though admittedly that was even longer ago, so I can't very easily put words to why. I just remember being so bored by the fight that dying felt more like agony than it normally would have, and if it hadn't been the last boss I honestly might've given up on it.
I’m pretty partial to the Zinger boss from dkc2. Really cool implementation of Squawks abilities and pretty intense after the buildup from the previous level.
Kaos has to be my absolute 1st favorite boss, number 1, fighting a robot is badass, it reminds me of the Robinson's robot from Lost In Space 1965. That and the boss music goes insanely well with KAOS. Sadly my super Nintendo does not work anymore so I constantly watching videos of the bosses and the game
My least favorite has gotta be Creepy Know from DKC2. Climbing never quite feels agile enough to dodge the egg projectiles and it is a relatively long boss that takes some serious time commitment every time.
The climbing could definitivly be better but I do not find the boss that hard. Though it could also just be my skill because I can complete the game to 100% within a day. I would recommend to constantly move left and right while climbing up. Or stay at the middle to not get screwed when the egg comes from at the wrong side.
I've always had a special spot in my heart for Kreepy Krow from DKC2, conceptually if not for the actual experience of fighting him. Having an entire world of spooky haunted levels be capped off by the ghost of the very first boss you took down in this game was a stroke of genius. Plus, he explodes when he dies (again)! How cool is that?
I love King K Rool in DKC 1 and DK 64! I also hate both the Jack in the Box and the Puffer Fish in DK64 (man those are hell). I also love the boss in world 5 of DKCR (Donkey Kong Country Returns). I think it's called like some kind of berry boss or something I don't remember the name exactly.
As for the number one entry, they did improve some of the boss fights in the GBA remake. Queen Zinger has a new attack pattern while enraged, Dumb Drum now needs to be attacked via barrels, Very Gnawty is now actually decent at jumping, Really Gnawty creates stalactites from the ceiling, and the second Necky fight not only has that recolor...but also the original trying to get back at DK and Diddy.
Squirt is the only reason I never cleared the GBA port of DKC3. And as for Baron K. Roolenstein, I once glitched out the fight so the HUD scrolled. I could see a bunch of internal numbers, like the game's clock ticking. I don't know how to replicate that glitch, but if anyone does, please contact Shesez of Boundary Break.
2:30 Crocomire from Super Metroid works in the exact same way, you have to make him fall into the lava behind him. In fact you need to hit him in the mouth as well, I wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of reference. Great video though!
Good video, although I big disagree with your #5 worst boss. I love Fredrik because of how hard and unforgiving it is, and honestly I think it feels like the perfect cap to that game because that game honestly gets pretty brutal difficulty-wise. Plus, I don't think the encounter has any moments that are truly unfair, so I enjoy it a ton because it is the game saying to me like "hey, you can clearly play a video game or two so we ain't holding back at all, get ready for a true final boss." I will say though I agree with the number one placement because every time I play DKC now I just trash talk the bosses (although I still like K Rool's fight). EDIT: I'll do my top 5s here since I haven't really considered what they are till now. Best: 1. Mad Jack - love the design, fight feels frantic, the sound fx during this fight are great and hit my nostalgia hard 2. Lord Fredrik - the ultimate test of skill, ain't for pushovers, one of my favorite boss themes 3. Kaptain K. Rool - yeah this boss is really good, one of my favorite boss themes too 4. Dogadon (Chunky) - the big chunky part is just too good 5. Sumo Kong - I fondly remember this fight feeling epic as hell Worst: 1. Bleak - just way too gimmicky and easy, also I just don't like the visual designs of DKC3 bosses much 2. Dumb Drum - yeah this boss is just very silly and nonsensical 3. Squirt - yeah what the hell even is that thing 4. Tiki Tong - not necessarily a bad boss fight wise, but it feels like I am fighting knock off master hand and crazy hand 5. Really Gnawty - very silly fight, not very interesting in terms of what they change in the fight
I liked when he listed a bunch of things that make Lord Fredrik cool and said they were the reasons he didn't like him! (It is annoying trying to jump on him but I feel that way about the entirety of Returns and TF.) I think DKC1's bosses were cool for being just giant animals. I've always thought K. Rool himself may be a Krusha considering he sounds like one in the first game and they call him King Krusha K. Rool in DK64 - so he himself would fit in with the rest. When I think of Donkey Kong, I don't think that he should be fighting flying swords or evil snowmen, I think that he should be fighting huge animals. (I don't mind the flying sword tho.) Buuut Dumb Drum is undeniably a stupid idea.
So happy to return to DK Month! This was an excellent video. I love it! Sad to hear it’s the end, at least for now. But such is the way of things! Much appreciation for many years of DK analysis.
Damn. Fredrik is one of my favorite bosses ever. And probably my favourite from all the DKC series. Exactly for the reasons you mentioned. Its tense and punishing but fair, and I love long bossfights. Well, the bad hitbox sucks, yeah. Overall I found all TF bosses to be great and among the best in the series. I'd put all the DKC 1 bosses except K.Rool in the worst personally. Just way too bland, as you said.
Best: MadJack from Frantic Factory. I thought he fit best to his level compared to the rest of the DK64 bosses: a rejected toy made from the factory that they can't contain so they have to keep him in his own isolated room. Good atmosphere, and he doesn't just take the 3 standard hits. It's perfect. Worst: Also from DK 64: the first Dogadon fight. This fight is a a straight carbon copy from the last boss fight with Army Dillo. With Army Dillo, you run in a circle, avoid fireballs, wait for his que, then throw a barrel of dynamite at him 3 times. When you fight Dogadon, you....run in a circle....avoid fireballs....wait for his que....throw a barrel of dynamite at him....3 times. HMMMMM
LET'S GOO DK MONTH! Also how dare you insult Colonel Pluck like that! I love him. 13 year old me would sometimes boot up my Wii just to fight it. The colonel pluck community will have its vengeance against you I swear!!
You have taken me through a journey since I've seen your previous 2014 boss video twenty minutes ago. I was almost convinced that you had moved beyond the Irate Gamer phase, but you just could not help yourself from making the Kool Aid Man joke yet again.
What I'd LOVE in a DK64 remake is changing how you get the barrels for the bosses. Instead of overused fireballs, Army Dillo could shoot fiery barrels, occasionally a non-lit one you can pick up. Perhaps the 'little Dogadons' would carry barrels to drop on you. I certainly admire the DK64 bosses for their intensity, especially their animations when getting hit, but they're a bit antiquated. But how DARE you offend the Colonel's beak! Jk, but I adore that boss. Sure, there's downtime as he gets from one side to the other, but when he charges at you, or stomps with feet closed, plus the second phase, makes him a refreshingly unexpected fella. He also strikes a nice visual balance as he mixes a big egg-shaped mech (that'd give Sonic bad flashbacks) and an utterly simplistic rooster with glasses and 0 expression. He's more of a rubber chicken, but also a groovy, genius inventor, and that's just funny. I wish the Kremlings employed him next. Plus his theme is FIRE. I've done a remix of it, if I may toss shameless self-promotion at the bottom here ua-cam.com/video/4iN4RDuOrmo/v-deo.html
man....I used to love donkey kong month....bit then it became so corporate and hijacked by big brands over the years that everyone forgot what it was originally about and the true meaning of donkey kong month ...😔
I'd say Jungle Beat has some nice concepts for bosses, but they recycle them so much they loose innovation by the time you reach the end, honorable mention for Worst bosses
Long live Steve's goblin face! Great start to DK Month! I think you were a little harsh one some of the worst picks, like c'mon dumb drum is such a fun boss fight. And like final boss for tropical freeze is a pain in the rear but it's frigging epic. Kaptain K Rool deserves the best tho!!!
Totally unpopular opinion but I really like Fredrik. He’s actually difficult and shoots ICE DRAGONS out of his alp horn. A slight on him though is that he apes K Rool a bit too much in terms of tactics.
I had a lot of frustration with most all of the bosses in DKC Returns because of how frustrating the joystick is on the New 2DS. it just isn't designed for that type of game and it shows
I disagree with your DK64 boss pick; I'd go with King Kut-Out. It's incredibly creative and ties in with the narrative that K. Rool's minions are doing anything and everything they can to stall for time to get the Blast-O-Matic working, even building a slapdash cutout of their boss in the hope that it stops the Kongs.
Hard disagree on Lord Fredrik, honestly. The one thing I'd concede about him is that despite the challenge and the top notch music, the fight did kinda feel like it should've had another phase beyond that. Something like him riding atop the giant ice dragon from the opening cutscene, for example. Tiki Tong from Returns suffers from that same issue _on top_ of being a pretty basic and not very visually exciting battle, all things considered. So that would've been my pick instead.
One look at my profile picture will tell you how much I love King K. Rool. Kaptain K. Rool is by far the greatest boss the series has to offer, glad we can agree on that front!
Also I’m surprised there were less DKCTF bosses on the best list, because I think they were all really fun bosses and had great design. Just my opinion though!
Hard disagree on Lord Frederik being one of the series' worst bosses. He's not as good as bashmaster, but the fight is a great challenge and the mechanic of the platforms being frozen by his ice attacks and returning to normal when they dip into the lava is very creative.
While I've never fought him myself (I only played the original SNES versions), a shoutout of the less flattering kind should go to Kerozene from the GBA remake of DKC2. Though I appreciate that they wanted to give Stronghold Showdown an actual boss instead of the fakeout cutscene from the original (which I personally never minded), I would have preferred about anything to... that. My theory is that he was originally planned for the DKC cartoon, but was considered too hideous even for that, so he decided to take it out on the Kongs. And from what I've seen, he doesn't look very fun to fight, as well. I'm sad to see this tradition end, but I hope it will make its return some day with your views on the new _Donkey Kong Country Returns_ title, once Retro Studios is finished with not making _Metroid Prime 4._
THANK YOU. I thought that I was the only one who didn't like Lord Fredrik's battle. I got stuck on there for so long because I couldn't even jump on him half of the time.
I quite like the tropical freeze final boss, I actually just beat that game today. Although the polar bear guy from world 5 was better and felt more like a final boss
Great video! I actually think Dumb Drum is better than all of the other normal bosses in DKC1 (K Rool being the best of the game, though that doesn't say much). Not to say that Dumb Drum is good, just that it was at least a nice break from almost all of the other bosses just being a big version that you need to jump on a few times. Sure, you still just have to jump on things a few times, but the presentation of it shook things up just a bit.

Also, as you mentioned, the hitbox on his back is beyond flawed. Landing the last couple of hits just isn't a fun experience and doesn't feel rewarding whatsoever.
I was today-years-old when I learned that there's a lava hand holding Kleever lol
Thank you for giving Dogadon the love he deserves
Honestly I don’t understand why he hates colonel pluck, yeah he’s slow but that’s for a good reason, the battle is about going under this guy’s legs and you only have to hit him 3 times before you go to his next phase.

I agree the hitbox on these platforms is nothing short of Insulting.
Squirt as a whole is just boring and it absolutely requires more attacks.
It's been a blast watching your DK Month videos over the years. Thanks for making all of them.
I'm stuck on that boss right now :(
The climbing could definitivly be better but I do not find the boss that hard.
All the Bosses from DKC1 got better and more challenging in the GBA remake.
Awesome vid. It's nice to see DK get some love. Especially after watching my other favorite Kong get worked over by Godzilla.
6:50 this boss would’ve been fine if it werent for those stupid hitboxes on the ledges. KILLED me as a kid
First game's bosses might be push overs but I love Queen B
Ba Boom in tropical freeze pissed me off big time when I first played it
I don't care what anyone else says...
Dumb Drum is my favorite DKC Boss
Cheers for a fine ending to DK month
Good video, although I big disagree with your #5 worst boss. I love Fredrik because of how hard and unforgiving it is, and honestly I think it feels like the perfect cap to that game because that game honestly gets pretty brutal difficulty-wise. Plus, I don't think the encounter has any moments that are truly unfair, so I enjoy it a ton because it is the game saying to me like "hey, you can clearly play a video game or two so we ain't holding back at all, get ready for a true final boss."
I will say though I agree with the number one placement because every time I play DKC now I just trash talk the bosses (although I still like K Rool's fight).
EDIT: I'll do my top 5s here since I haven't really considered what they are till now.
Best:
1. Mad Jack - love the design, fight feels frantic, the sound fx during this fight are great and hit my nostalgia hard
2. Lord Fredrik - the ultimate test of skill, ain't for pushovers, one of my favorite boss themes
3. Kaptain K. Rool - yeah this boss is really good, one of my favorite boss themes too
4. Dogadon (Chunky) - the big chunky part is just too good
5. Sumo Kong - I fondly remember this fight feeling epic as hell
Worst:
1. Bleak - just way too gimmicky and easy, also I just don't like the visual designs of DKC3 bosses much
2. Dumb Drum - yeah this boss is just very silly and nonsensical
3. Squirt - yeah what the hell even is that thing
4. Tiki Tong - not necessarily a bad boss fight wise, but it feels like I am fighting knock off master hand and crazy hand
5. Really Gnawty - very silly fight, not very interesting in terms of what they change in the fight
I liked when he listed a bunch of things that make Lord Fredrik cool and said they were the reasons he didn't like him! (It is annoying trying to jump on him but I feel that way about the entirety of Returns and TF.)
I think DKC1's bosses were cool for being just giant animals.
Belcha is like a Crocomire fight.
Fun fact about crocomire- he won’t attack(spit fire balls) until you attack him first. He just wants to hug you.
Who else here thinks the lava monster holding up the sword in DKC2 is that Kerosene boss seen in the gba version of the game
I hate seeing DK Month come to an end, but I'm so happy we got one last round of it! Can't wait for the rest of this month's videos. :)
My first thought when I read top 5 worst bosses: "So all of the DKC1 bosses?"
Glad I was validated.
We need a new Donkey Kong Country game
HMMMMM
Amazing. I would love to watch you rank ALL the bosses across the five games. It would be amazing
LET'S GOO DK MONTH!
Also how dare you insult Colonel Pluck like that! I love him. 13 year old me would sometimes boot up my Wii just to fight it.
The colonel pluck community will have its vengeance against you I swear!!
Kaptain K. Rool is definitively a top, while Baron K. Roolenstein is totally a bottom.
I had a lot of frustration with most all of the bosses in DKC Returns because of how frustrating the joystick is on the New 2DS. it just isn't designed for that type of game and it shows
2D games need to be played with a dpad anyways...
So that would've been my pick instead.
i actually liked all the k rool bosses even from three..really tested out my timing ^_^
We Salute you, Donkey Kong Month
IMMA GO WATCH IT!
Only reason I ever found this channel was donkey Kong month.
One day we'll get another Retro DKC... One day...
Right?
Donkey Kong month is back again...for the final time
King Kut Out made me laugh out loud the first time I saw it.
I think DKC3 K rool is underwhelming compared to Kaptain K Rool, but still nowhere near worst 5. I'd probably put a DKCR boss in its place
The stuff about Fredrick basically sums up my thoughts on almost all of world 6. Especially the volcano Rambi level.
I can believe lord Fredrik is one of the best one
Great video!
I actually think Dumb Drum is better than all of the other normal bosses in DKC1 (K Rool being the best of the game, though that doesn't say much). Not to say that Dumb Drum is good, just that it was at least a nice break from almost all of the other bosses just being a big version that you need to jump on a few times.
Sure, you still just have to jump on things a few times, but the presentation of it shook things up just a bit.
Least favorite fight was King Zing from DKC2. Janky flight controls plus tiny TINY hitbox equals frustration.
I love the concept of fighting bigger versions of basic enemies, I also somehow always liked Dumb Drum, but I was just a kid.
With #5 of bad bosses, that's what I think of the final boss of dkc 2. (The fist KK rool fight)
I really liked the King Zing fight in DK2, from the level priors introduction to him to the hundred deaths he caused me as a child
Yeahh boy!
Bashmaster appreciation! The only thing I don't like about him is that I like him more than the final boss.
