I remember having a players guide to this game. They would rate the difficulty of the bananas with barrels. They gave the beetle race a 6 out of 5 barrels lol
@ I struggled like hell with Aztec but I beat the 2nd one in my first try lol. Idk how you did it with the first one. Even with the slowing down, not jumping, all that, I still couldn’t do well
Not so fun fact: the Mecha Fish banana is even worse if you get the Sniper Scope first. The slight lag caused by the upgrade makes the fans spin slower, which means less chances to shoot the valve, making it nearly impossible to complete without turning off the scope or facing away from the fan periodically.
I don't think they ever tested this when making the game! I've always beaten it while first exploring Galleon, but it's understandable that some players would want to come back later. Absolutely devastating
When I went for the 101% and had no choice but to do them, I literally put a timer on my phone for the first one in Creepy Castle just to for fun to see how long it actually took to do it. Took me one hour and 13 minutes to do it lol
I 100% agree with this list. Beaver Bother is still my #1 hated one to this day. Though, after playing it so much, I have learned one strategy to get the beavers in the hole faster. While they’re next to the hole, wait for them to not be scared anymore and as they’re just barely walking away from the hole, scare them and they’ll jump in the hole. I think part of their programming with them is that they can’t usually walk off ledges when they detect it. So when the initial scare happens, that split moment of their programming is shut off and they forget that they’re next to a ledge. It’s not a guaranteed thing, but it’s helped me a lot throughout my plays. I just hope this made sense. lol
That's interesting because they can sometimes just walk into the hole on their own. One of my strategies to beat it was to not skip the rules explanation at the start, and hope that one of them walks before the game starts; it still counts towards the score.
I cannot begin to describe just how much trauma the beetle caused me as a kid or just how many attempts it took me to actually beat it. Despite that, there was nothing that angered me more than the beetle's annoying laugh after the race
Apparently if you get the zoom upgrade before doing the mechanical piranha golden banana it becomes almost impossible, as all the zoom does is increase the render distance of everything and thus slow the game down to the point that the fan does not spin enough times for you to complete the minigame without doing something to minimize the lag

The beetle would piss me off but at least felt doable. I remember on my Wii U run of this game i only beat the rabbit because he glitched out and got stuck on a log or something near the end lol
Believe it or not, the glitch of getting in the barrel to start the race against the rabbit still works on the WiiU. I saved a clip of it on my Twitch channel for proof. The timing is very strict, but doable.
@@superjoebros64 I had no idea either. I just jump over the beetle in the beginning after grabbing the first five coins (the only time I jump in the race) and it gives me a huge lead.
I never knew either! My strategy was at the very end of the race. When it comes down to the sprint for the finish line, I always tried to position myself directly in front of the beetle. If done correctly, you'll block the beetle so it can't get in front of you and it'll just push you to the finish.
I'm surprised people complain more about the beetle than that goddamn rabbit. The beetle races are a pain, but at least they're doable. I've never heard of anyone beating the rabbit without either the barrel glitch or him getting stuck on an enemy.
The trick to it without glitches is to jump through the second last log at an angle where it gives you enough time and momentum to either keep up with or overtake the rabbit, also helps to use instrument to clear away enemies so you can focus on the jumps more
Special Shoutout to Krazy Kong Klamour if you're playing the N64 version with an AV to HDMI adapter. The slight lag makes *all* the difference in the time you have to shoot. Because if the lag, you have to pretty much predict where the banana will be each time
The Chunky Golden Banana in Gloomy Galleon where you have to carry the cannonball to the Cannon is super annoying as well. Took me quite a few tries to hit the moving targets, and the timer is so strict! Then, if you fail, you have to kill the Kasplat again and carry the ball over.
Man, you picked the _exact_ Golden Bananas that I despise as well and make me dread a complete 101% run of the game. This game could get pretty obnoxious at times. I never liked the Donkey Kong Arcade and Jetpac challenges either. I didn't even know you could attack the beetle before the race! That does sound useful! The only other challenges I really don't like were flying through the rings using Diddy's jetpack (especially the owl one) as well as the cannon target shooting game with Chunky in Gloomy Galleon. If the rabbit in Crystal Caves is the same one we race in Fungi Forest, I would have loved to leave him tied to the TNT barrel! 😅
Good call on loathing Diddy's jetpack rings with vulture and owl. Those sections are so unnecessarily bs. The best crysyal coconut power up was rendered to piss there. However it doesn't touch Ronald the Hare though
You forgot to mention one other thing about the beetle race in Crystal Caves. Unlike the slide race in Angry Aztec, you can't even attack the beetle to slow her down, since Lanky is stuck in his Orangstand pose. Ugh, that freakin' beetle, man.
Some others worth mentioning: - Slot machine and Krazy Kong Klamour (hardest versions) These can be destroyed with save states, but i don't know if i could beat them without - Defeating the enemy causing icicles to fall Not hard, just so many steps. Carry boulder to button, carry giant boulder to giant button, monkeyport up there. - Gloomy Galleon boat race You have poor control over the boat, can only miss 4 gates and must have enough coins - Owl and rings (both times) This is much easier if you press Z to stop, then aim for the next ring
I'm surprised you didn't mention the part where the mechanical fish becomes IMPOSSIBLE to beat when you obtain the zoom lense. Apparently that upgrade creates lag, and the time will still run out with perfect timing. You CAN turn that upgrade off, but not everyone knows you can do that (you need to dig through menu settings)
Don't think the last one was fair, it's just hard. The one that frustrated me the most was the one where you have to climb that big moving machine in Frantic Factory. Not only are the jumps hard, but you've got bad camera, bad control and laggy environment.
Fun fact about the mechanical fish golden banana, if you destroy the heart and make the golden banana appear, you can softlock that golden banana from being obtainable if you leave the fish before collecting the banana. My guess is the game flags the fish as being completed when you destroy the heart as why wouldn’t you just collect it there and then, as activating the guitar pad does nothing at that point
When I was a teenager while first playing the game, the Beaver Bothers were impossible to do. But now, once you got the twist, they are simple to do. Just don't focus on one beaver when it gets stuck near the hole. Keep moving and change targets. But right now, when I'm playing the game today, the worst golden banana is clearly the race against the rabbit with Lanky! Even if I got a perfect control of the game nowadays, that banana is frequently imposible to obtain. Sometimes, I can't get the max speed I'm suppose to get from the barrel...
6:13 the beavers spawning more in frantic factory actually makes that challenge harder because its even more difficult to move around the 5 beavers compared to 4
Beaver Bother would be so much better if, when you scare them, they dash in the opposite direction, making the minigame a challenge of accuracy. Also why didn't they make the Beetle Race a game to collect the most coins, with alternates paths you can go in AND the beetle alternates between as well.
6:30 for me it actually was NOT mashing the scare button, but scaring them once or twice until they stand at the hole, and then standing linear to them and scare them into the hole. But them getting stuck at the outer walls is just - pain.
I was losing my mind on the rabbit race and the only saving grace was the fateful time the rabbit got hung up on the krusha under the tree just enough for me to pull ahead. Stupid Wii u version...
Funnily enough about the Bongo Glitch: If you had the strategy guide for this game, it actually mentions that playing the bongo will stop the walls from spinning. So either it was an oversight that the guide happened to catch... or it was intentionally programmed in as a clever secret.
Ahh the damn beetle race. For some reason as a kid, I beat the one in Crystal Caves before I went back to Angry Aztec to finish that one. I guess the Crystal Caves one is a bit more bearable since you get a bit more room to avoid the beetle, and Orangstand Sprint too. And yeah the mechanical fish has to be my least favorite in the game, which really could have been better if you either simply had more time, or could hit the vents between the propellor spins. I think I did beat it as a kid even with the sniper scope lag, but I don't fully remember how.
It's strange how the first three entries and the 5th for the worst bananas in this game all have music that genuinely could contest for best music in the game. I LOVE the beetle race tracks and the rabbit race track. The mech fish track is also SO catchy especially when it starts to play the main theme of gloomy galleon with that distorted guitar jamming. Ugh. i love Grant Kirkhope's music.
I will also confess, I actually do think the design if the racetrack for the beetle are cool, especially the Crystal Caves one, but yep. Dreadful, dreadful bananas.
I think Grant really saved this game 😅 if the music wasn't what it is, we wouldn't be here talking about the silver lining for these awful challenges haha
@@superjoebros64you said it best. I've played this game God knows how many times and one time via emulation the sound went out and it felt like hell. This game needs music and sound design or else it dies hard. Grant saved this game or made this game depending on how you think about it. Not counting Conker (because it barely qualifies as a game) Banjo Tooie is my fave of the 3 Rare n64 platformers but Dk64 has the panache, character, and soundtrack to rival any game ever period.
3:04 Not the Squawks tutorial! Most of the time, the first time you use the Orangstang Sprint ability, it's in the Beetle race, and Squawks giving you the "This ability uses your Crystal Coconuts." (not in this race it doesn't) speech pretty much guarantees your failure for the first attempt.
Just stopping by to give props for your mention of the mechanical fish. My game gliched the first time I went inside it and I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do, or what I was doing wrong. So frustration on top of frustration. And there was not internet back in those days. So I left it and came back later and immediately demolished the fish.
Special note about the fish game: It's impossible to do if you wait/forget to do it until you have the sniper scope upgrade. The sniper scope causes slowdown that affects the gameplay, but not the minigame timer. You will NEVER get all nine hits in in time.
If you deactivate your gun (only view in 1st person, not aiming the gun) the game runs at normal speed! A real shame the scope creates this problem but at least it's possible to still beat it!
One trick I know for the ice maze in crystal caves. If you let the kasplat hurt you, the maze instead of taking one whole watermelon, it kates half, going from 3 hits to basically five. But what you said of the bongos is way better.
Yeah, I can definitely agree with this list. I would have probably added the seal race in Gloomy Galleon or the various Jetpack races with Diddy as my fifth pick. Isn't there an invincibility barrel in the DK igloo maze? Fun fact about the fish and the rabbit race: since the N64 lagged a lot, Rare compensated this by accelerating the Kong whenever it got laggy. This is well known trivia. However, playing on an emulator gets rid of the lag and therefore the acceleration leading to those challenges being borderline impossible to clear.
I've never seen the invincibility barrel there on original hardware! Yeah this whole issue with lag is crazy! I can see why Rare did this at the time though
The beetle races literally made 10 year old me cry. Dont get me started with that darn rabbit either. Mechanical fish used to scare me, this is literally the first time ive ever seen his insides... infact after getting all the blueprints i usually go for the end of the game if i can
It is funny that 2 of these bananas are fixed in the randomizer that normally adds challenge to the game. For that beaver barrel they added golden beavers that give 2 points instead of one. The spinning maze gets a donkey kong barrel
This game has the same problem mario odyssey did, where some moons are as easy to get as just groundpound an area you were required to go to for the story, then you had ones that had you go through an entire sub-area to get a moon. Both had the exact same value but one had a much more difficult time, and not being able to get multiple moons for hard rewards makes them not nearly as worth it. (Excluding the multi moons you get for beating a required story boss)
Beaver Bother has the same vibes as a Crash Bash Gem or Crystal Challenge: Do a thing in a short amount of time and it sounds simple when you explain it, but it's up to the game's RNG whether you will do it in a short amount of time or will end up bashing your head against the wall from how long it takes
Also, unfun fact with the mechanical fish. You have to beat him before you get the Zoom in upgrade or enjoy having to deal with slowdown, which will result in a fail.
It's possible to beat this even if you have the scope upgrade, but it's crazy that this was overlooked! I never understood how some people struggled with this golden banana until now!
I'm glad that the Beaver Bother trick caught on, Ice Maze room has a Strong Kong barrel in it and you can backflip onto the ledges in the Diddy room with enough space between Diddy and the platform (Not intentonal, but means you can bypass jetpack). I agree about the races, those just suck.
I replayed DK64 recently and had no idea you can attack the beetle before they're on the race track. I was too focused making sure I kept a good number of coins before the end of the race. What I ended up doing during the final (rigged) sprint was to walk directly in front of the beetle so they would essentially push me to the finish line and win. Also, the only way I eventually won the rabbit race (can't remember if it was the first try or rematch) was through a bit of a bug where he collided with the Kersplat in the area and was held in place by it, allowing me a chance to get a good ways ahead of him 😂
I only ever played this game on the Wii U and wasn’t aware of all the different lag timing between it and the N64 version. Which is what made the later Krazy Kong Klamor games impossible without cheesing the game.
@ I never played in the N65 so I had nothing to compare it to. Met me just say, I would have given up way sooner if it weren’t for save states lol. I did manage 102% somehow. Tried again not too long ago and gave up on Beaver Bother. I hate that game.
I feel this video so much, I recently mastered the RetroAchievements set for this and had to do everything here. I didn’t even know of that DK Ice Maze bongo glitch, but I don’t think I could’ve used it. I had to do that maze without getting hit once, and I did it with it moving. Nightmare. Beaver Bother for me is still the worst. No words can stress how repellent that hole is. You can push them straight at the hole over and over and a mystical force just keeps them out. As the video says, you have to spin them in from the side into one of the edges of the hole instead- way easier said than done. The beavers also tend to just run in random directions and get caught on the walls, and at that point you have to leave them because you’re not pulling them away. Absolutely horrendous.
@@superjoebros64 I think you'll have a lot more knowledge on this than I would, but I think I heard DK64 as a whole was massively rushed because it needed to serve as a hero game for the N64 for the holiday season? If that's the case then I can see why things like Beaver Bother feels downright broken at times, and why they had the issues like the memory overloading. I also read something the game was perfectly capable of running on the default jumper pak but was required to use the 2x RAM expansion pak to keep the game running longer before the memory leaked. I even read that because Nintendo just flash copied the ROM as is for the Wii U VC release, the leak issue still occurs there, but the Wii U does have much more RAM so it takes much, much longer.
Back when I still had this game on the original N64 the only two golden bananas I failed to get both in the Crystal caves. the race against the beetle in the castle and the other was in Diddy Kong's room with a way I did to feed the enemies in a short amount of time. No matter how fast I did it, I couldn't. Not quite sure I remember beating the rabbit in fungi Forest but it was collected there
You completely get me! Yes, the two beetle races, the rabbit race, all the Beaver Bother games, and that banana in the cabin are the most annoying to get! It's like you read my mind! However, personally, I never really had an issue getting the banana from the mechanical fish. The banana you get as Chunky near the entrance to Gloomy Galleon, where you use the cannon to hit three moving targets I usually have a much more difficult time with, but that's just me. Getting the banana from the arcade game in Frantic Factory, racing the Owl in Fungi Forest, were no picnics either! But that's just me.
When I was a child, the donkey kong arcade banana was a pretty cool one because my parents had played it in their youth and were really good at it. We didn't play many games together, so this ended up being a bonding moment over video games.
Also, the mechanical fish. Ugh. When I was little, it never occurred to me that you needed to shoot his heart gauges. Since the only way to get out of the fish is to fail the challenge, I always thought I was just stuck there forever. Scarred me as a kid, actually.
I think we can all agree that the Barrel Blast courses in Fungi Forest and Crystal Caves should not have barrel minigames at the end of them. What an absolute load.
As someone who plays randomized versions of the game, I've often been forced into that very situation, and while it is noticeably more difficult, it's not impossible. Working with the final Simian Slam animations definitely makes a world of difference.
The mechanical fish isnt as bad once you realize you can hit the targets when the fan is spinning. Otherwise the Owl race as a kid was pretty tough, flying the jetpack is easy now a days but as a kid it was pretty rough.
I once tried to 100 percent this game. Our old n64 controllers reached a point where the control stick was wearing out and you had to push real hard and hope your characters go at full speed. By the time i got to the end of the game it got worse and even pushing hard wasn't always working. I had 190+ bananas, and the rabbit banana was literally impossible on our controllers due to needing to constantly change directions and go at max speed at all time. I never will try to 100 percent this game again
The fish banana has a big of you have the sniper scope, the game slows down so the cycle takes longer and the timer runs out earlier, apparently, perfect play, not aiming while it spins and trying to keep shooting after the fail noise can still allow you to get the banana.
the beetle actually speeds up to pass you if you're ahead of it so the best strategy is to pull a mario kart and bag all the required coins before passing them then speed blitz near the end
personally I've never been able to pull off this strategy. The beetle is much faster at the very end when walking to the finish line. You need a whole lot of distance to win just because of that section!
Oh yes, "Beaver bother", and the mechanical fish! I always turn the volume off on my TV for those games, it reduces 90 % of the stress ;) As a kid, I hated "Batty barrel bandit". The fruits were rolling too fast, and I had a lot of trouble with it. Also, Lanky´s labyrinth in "Creepy castle". Now I know it, but back then, it made me frustrated because I could no find the exit/ banana within the time limit.
I think that the DK ice maze was supposed to have the DK barrel ability that turns him invincible. You can see crystal coconuts lining the inside of the igloo but they serve no purpose there.
That mechanical fish banana... if you have the sniper scope upgrade for your gun, it messes with the frame rate and timer, making it so you have 0 room for any mistakes.
Great job with the list! You hit almost every one on my worst golden banana list. I never liked the owl race because the jet pack controls are awful. It feels like you can either go up or down in a zigzag but flying in a straight line is almost impossible. The game would freeze on me after so many attempts of the race too. I really enjoyed Donkey Kong 64 but so many of the challenges were unfair and WAY too difficult that I gave up on completing it 100% 😔
The second beetle race has always been the bane of my existence, I was scared to death of it as a kid and knew I would have to sit down for an hour or 2 if I wanted to walk away with that victory. It got to a point today where since I knew I'd have to clear it regularly due to my admiration to do playthroughs via DK64 randomizer, I sat down and played it until I figured out everything I needed to do. Now I can say with pride I can win on my first or second try without much trouble today. ... Beaver Bother, on the other hand...
To be honest, most of this is just a skill issue. I actually loved that spinning crystal caves maze. If you want to talk about a real N64 challenge, try getting a perfect score in one of the Majora's Mask shooting galleries with a drifting controller.
The second rabbit race is guilty of the exact same sin as the polar bear circuit from Banjo-Kazooie. Why is it so necessary to toss in one-off backtracking for something that could've just as easily been restricted to a single race?
It's really disappointing too that there are two BBs at the FINAL stage. Like, if they were introduced earlier in the playthrough at least you could wash them down with a bunch more of the satisfying challenges, rather than the other way around.
For that final Diddy banana I found if you take out one of the corner guys then sit on the edge of the corner looking to the middle, you can toss grenades in and they home in on the middle guys then jump over and move to the corners to finish the other corners
You named the top two for me. The final Beaver bother at the top of Creepy Castle and the Diddy Kong cabin are the two hardest for sure....well besides the DK Arcade of course 😵💫
Well given that Creepy Castle is the penultimate level in the game, it wouldn't surprise me that there would twice the hell of Beaver Bother challenges.
You actually CAN use the handstand barrel right before the second race with the rabbit and of course I was only able to get the golden banana that way, but one of my worst golden bananas is Krazy Kong Klamor, I swear if they gave you .005 seconds less to hit every Kremlin in that minigame it would’ve been impossible for me. I also think it’s in the Fungi Forest AND it’s REQUIRED in order to leave the room you’re stuck in which means I cant just skip it and leave it for later
It’s stuff like this that makes me wish there was a rom hack that improves the game design like having more areas that give you infinite amount of the necessary supplies for that golden banana or have the beavers in Beaver Bother ACTUALLY fall in the hole when they’re supposed to.
I would have to revisit the randomizer to see what kind of changes might exist for these golden bananas. I know like the arcade for example is much more simplified
Loving these DK64 videos! The tone of your voice reminds me of the guy who spoke over some of the old N64 commercials like Pokémon Snap and the "Got Milk?" Mario one. Great nostalgic touch if you ask me 🍌🐵
Speaking of the mechanical fish banana, Cybershell’s video on it is interesting. After a certain point of the game, the banana is literally impossible to get after a certain point.
Tbh I haven’t had a problem with the beetle challenge myself, but I 101% this game, And you nailed the first two minigames after the beetle race. The Rabbit rematch challenge is terrible, and the Gator Herding was Hell! The Rabbit challenge: I tried so many times to beat by trying to get inside the barrel as quick as I could, but It never worked. I only beat the challenge when I searched for the barrel glitch so I can beat him. The Gator Herding: OH MY GOSH!! That one is so horrible! The last one was such a piss off when I did that one. I think I almost wanted to chuck my controller cause of the close calls and unfair cutoff when you do make it to zero and get the last Beaver inside the hole to beat that Hellish experience of a minigame. So for me the Gator herding is #1 Rabbit one is #2

LOL NO WAY. What a victory
Believe it or not, the glitch of getting in the barrel to start the race against the rabbit still works on the WiiU. I saved a clip of it on my Twitch channel for proof. The timing is very strict, but doable.
oh boy, alright that's great to hear!
Wait a minute.... The beetle is FEMALE?!
Just like Kazooie!
Why yes. Yes she is.
I recall reading this awhile ago, and it’s been my default ever since!
y’all hear me out real quick…
I looked it up, and apparently the beetle is indeed female. The DK64 guide on Nintendo's site refers to the beetle as "she".
I just found out about that bongo glitch watching this video. Definitely will need to remember that on my next playthrough :0
It's INCREDIBLE! Only recently learned about it too
On the randomizer they just added a donkey kong barrel there. Basically everything gets harder but this
Finally, the newcomers can understand the *ahems* in literally every other DK December video
Exactly 😂😂😂
That beetle race, man... the bane of my existence as a kid lol
truly the worst! Traumatized us all
...you can attack the BETTLE!?!
RIGHT?! Like, what do you mean?!
I JUST did a 100% playthrough a month ago (for it's anniversary), this would've been great to know! lmao
I'm sorry if you're just now finding out!!! 😭
I can't decide which is worse lol
@superjoebros64 Did you manage to beat the rabbit without glitches?
That's the only ways to do it. It's broken ass shit. Rodney the hare needs a Conker level game. I cannot fathom a more annoying character
The trick to it without glitches is to jump through the second last log at an angle where it gives you enough time and momentum to either keep up with or overtake the rabbit, also helps to use instrument to clear away enemies so you can focus on the jumps more
I see Wrinkly Kong as she smiles down from Banana Heaven, wishing she'd kept K. Rool in detention. May she rest in fleece.🥜
😂 too accurate haha
9:20 W H A T
10 year old me would've loved that knowledge
I, too, was today years old.
I'm sorry if this is how you're finding out!
Special Shoutout to Krazy Kong Klamour if you're playing the N64 version with an AV to HDMI adapter. The slight lag makes *all* the difference in the time you have to shoot. Because if the lag, you have to pretty much predict where the banana will be each time
I've heard about this, that's rough
These were definitely the moments in the game where even stupid kid me was like "yeah this isn't fun"
exactly this 😂
The Chunky Golden Banana in Gloomy Galleon where you have to carry the cannonball to the Cannon is super annoying as well. Took me quite a few tries to hit the moving targets, and the timer is so strict! Then, if you fail, you have to kill the Kasplat again and carry the ball over.
I haaaate that golden banana. It's def in the top 10 for me
Man, you picked the _exact_ Golden Bananas that I despise as well and make me dread a complete 101% run of the game.
Haha same page!! I can't stand that Chunky cannon challenge. It's awful!
Good call on loathing Diddy's jetpack rings with vulture and owl. Those sections are so unnecessarily bs. The best crysyal coconut power up was rendered to piss there. However it doesn't touch Ronald the Hare though
My love for Donkey Kong 64 is strong like a golden banana.
I understand this completely 😁🍌🐒
You forgot to mention one other thing about the beetle race in Crystal Caves. Unlike the slide race in Angry Aztec, you can't even attack the beetle to slow her down, since Lanky is stuck in his Orangstand pose.
Ugh, that freakin' beetle, man.
UGH for real, that's just not fair
Some others worth mentioning:
- Slot machine and Krazy Kong Klamour (hardest versions)
These can be destroyed with save states, but i don't know if i could beat them without
- Defeating the enemy causing icicles to fall
Not hard, just so many steps. Carry boulder to button, carry giant boulder to giant button, monkeyport up there.
- Gloomy Galleon boat race
You have poor control over the boat, can only miss 4 gates and must have enough coins
- Owl and rings (both times)
This is much easier if you press Z to stop, then aim for the next ring
solid list! I respect it
I'm surprised you didn't mention the part where the mechanical fish becomes IMPOSSIBLE to beat when you obtain the zoom lense. Apparently that upgrade creates lag, and the time will still run out with perfect timing. You CAN turn that upgrade off, but not everyone knows you can do that (you need to dig through menu settings)
I mention it in another video, and kind of showed this issue with footage. But yes! It's brutal!
You forgot to mention that you can easily fail Diddy's log cabin banana simply because of how long the Klump's death animation is.
ugh actually the worst!
Don't think the last one was fair, it's just hard. The one that frustrated me the most was the one where you have to climb that big moving machine in Frantic Factory. Not only are the jumps hard, but you've got bad camera, bad control and laggy environment.
I agree with that! That's a rough time
Even childhood games has a few stinker minigames.
WOW okay that's crazy
"Seems we all have that ONE golden banana keeping us up at night." You said it, not me! 😂
Hahaha I know it be true 😂
When I was a teenager while first playing the game, the Beaver Bothers were impossible to do. But now, once you got the twist, they are simple to do. Just don't focus on one beaver when it gets stuck near the hole. Keep moving and change targets. But right now, when I'm playing the game today, the worst golden banana is clearly the race against the rabbit with Lanky! Even if I got a perfect control of the game nowadays, that banana is frequently imposible to obtain. Sometimes, I can't get the max speed I'm suppose to get from the barrel...
definitely the greatest tip for BB, just gotta keep moving
6:13 the beavers spawning more in frantic factory actually makes that challenge harder because its even more difficult to move around the 5 beavers compared to 4
Didn't even think of it this way!
Beaver Bother would be so much better if, when you scare them, they dash in the opposite direction, making the minigame a challenge of accuracy.
Also why didn't they make the Beetle Race a game to collect the most coins, with alternates paths you can go in AND the beetle alternates between as well.
That would make BB so much better 😭
the diddy cabin banana is my least favorite. glad it got mentioned here
I don't remember it being bad 25 years ago. Like??? When did this happen haha. It's so brutal. Definitely needed to be on this list.
6:30 for me it actually was NOT mashing the scare button, but scaring them once or twice until they stand at the hole, and then standing linear to them and scare them into the hole. But them getting stuck at the outer walls is just - pain.
it's a good technique! Just wish it worked out for me more often haha
@@superjoebros64 i really do think that the beaver bother minigame is the most RNG heavy of those - even the Bingo barrel thingy has a fixed pattern
I was losing my mind on the rabbit race and the only saving grace was the fateful time the rabbit got hung up on the krusha under the tree just enough for me to pull ahead. Stupid Wii u version...
thank goodness for the common enemies haha
I didn’t know that the beetle was female.
General rule with bugs: if they don't have a giant ass horn, they're female.
It's gender non-conforming
I remember reading it somewhere
The Mariowiki lists her as female and also includes a source in her article.
Rabbit is the worst for me. My control stick was bad so it made it horrible.
Also I didn’t know you could hit the Beetle :O
I could only imagine what that must have felt like, trying to beat the rabbit with a bad controller!
Funnily enough about the Bongo Glitch:
If you had the strategy guide for this game, it actually mentions that playing the bongo will stop the walls from spinning. So either it was an oversight that the guide happened to catch... or it was intentionally programmed in as a clever secret.
no waaaay! Okay that's super interesting
It's a rough time all around 😭
If I remember correctly. Jumping in the beetle race right before you have to get up and walk keeps Tiny’s momentum and rockets you very far forward
Oh that does ring a bell
Seeing that beetle unearthed some buried childhood trauma. You didn’t even play the laugh track, but I can still hear it.
Such a traumatizing sound 😭
The hardest one for me was a that diddy one in crystal caves in the cabin
It's absolutely brutal for no good reason!
times nintendo and rare forgot that kids are playing these games in the 90's,been there multiple times
Horrendous design 😭 I get the need for an explanation but bruh!
Oh gosh that's rough 😭 glad you were able to beat it later!
@superjoebros64 Oh cool. I didn't know a workaround was found.
One trick I know for the ice maze in crystal caves. If you let the kasplat hurt you, the maze instead of taking one whole watermelon, it kates half, going from 3 hits to basically five. But what you said of the bongos is way better.
Okay thats brilliant!
DK's Baboon Blast banana in Fungi Forest and Crystal Caves. I feel like nobody struggled with them as much as I have.
no I hear ya! I STRUGGLE with those two as well
Yeah, I can definitely agree with this list.
Mechanical fish used to scare me, this is literally the first time ive ever seen his insides... infact after getting all the blueprints i usually go for the end of the game if i can
This game really humbled us as kids, no joke 😂
At first the maze challenge as a honorable mention I was like 😱. But then the glitch😱😱😱😱😱 but then 9:30 I was like YES!!! FUCK THAT CABIN CHALLENGE
Hahaha both absolutely brutal challenges 😂
The bug races, the DK Crystal Caves maze, and the Chunky cannon one in Gloomy Gaellon.
Chunky's cannon challenge is miserable! I can't stand that one either!
It is funny that 2 of these bananas are fixed in the randomizer that normally adds challenge to the game. For that beaver barrel they added golden beavers that give 2 points instead of one. The spinning maze gets a donkey kong barrel
Isn't that incredible? Makes the game so much smoother
For real though. They really should make the reward worth the hassle
And believe me, there have been lots of head bashing days for me 😂
Also, unfun fact with the mechanical fish.
I agree about the races, those just suck.
great tip about Diddy's cabin! learning something new
I replayed DK64 recently and had no idea you can attack the beetle before they're on the race track. I was too focused making sure I kept a good number of coins before the end of the race. What I ended up doing during the final (rigged) sprint was to walk directly in front of the beetle so they would essentially push me to the finish line and win.
Also, the only way I eventually won the rabbit race (can't remember if it was the first try or rematch) was through a bit of a bug where he collided with the Kersplat in the area and was held in place by it, allowing me a chance to get a good ways ahead of him 😂
the placement of that Kasplat is incredible! Makes me wonder how intentional it was lol
I only ever played this game on the Wii U and wasn’t aware of all the different lag timing between it and the N64 version. Which is what made the later Krazy Kong Klamor games impossible without cheesing the game.
I couldn't imagine first time playing on Wii U! It sounds so different in comparison
@
I never played in the N65 so I had nothing to compare it to. Met me just say, I would have given up way sooner if it weren’t for save states lol. I did manage 102% somehow. Tried again not too long ago and gave up on Beaver Bother. I hate that game.
So glad you mentioned the ice level with lankys race. God I remember the Pain!
Couldn't forget it!
It really makes me wonder if Beaver Bother was even tested because what the heck 😭
Literally just said to my sister "I promise Beaver Bother will be in this vid." She agreed.
hahaha we were all thinking it 😂
Back when I still had this game on the original N64 the only two golden bananas I failed to get both in the Crystal caves. the race against the beetle in the castle and the other was in Diddy Kong's room with a way I did to feed the enemies in a short amount of time. No matter how fast I did it, I couldn't.
Not quite sure I remember beating the rabbit in fungi Forest but it was collected there
oh boy, of course it's Crystal Caves 😭
You completely get me! Yes, the two beetle races, the rabbit race, all the Beaver Bother games, and that banana in the cabin are the most annoying to get! It's like you read my mind!
However, personally, I never really had an issue getting the banana from the mechanical fish. The banana you get as Chunky near the entrance to Gloomy Galleon, where you use the cannon to hit three moving targets I usually have a much more difficult time with, but that's just me. Getting the banana from the arcade game in Frantic Factory, racing the Owl in Fungi Forest, were no picnics either! But that's just me.
I totally agree with you! That cannon challenge is the bane of my existence
I can't hear the Crystal Caves cabin theme without intrusive thoughts of a long gone age...
They say those words... "I am Painis Cupcake".
😂
When I was a child, the donkey kong arcade banana was a pretty cool one because my parents had played it in their youth and were really good at it. We didn't play many games together, so this ended up being a bonding moment over video games.
That's an awesome moment! Bet they were pros at it too haha
Also, the mechanical fish. Ugh. When I was little, it never occurred to me that you needed to shoot his heart gauges. Since the only way to get out of the fish is to fail the challenge, I always thought I was just stuck there forever. Scarred me as a kid, actually.
that's pretty horrifying when you think about it!
I think we can all agree that the Barrel Blast courses in Fungi Forest and Crystal Caves should not have barrel minigames at the end of them. What an absolute load.
agreed! Those 2 especially are insanely difficult for me. What an awful reward waiting at the end haha
The tomato in Crystal Caves becomes impossible if you fully upgrade the simian slam. Idk if you actually CAN beat it that way, but I never was able to
As someone who plays randomized versions of the game, I've often been forced into that very situation, and while it is noticeably more difficult, it's not impossible. Working with the final Simian Slam animations definitely makes a world of difference.
dang I never thought about that! That's pretty awful
What a painful experience 😭 I promise the game is more fun!
The fish banana has a big of you have the sniper scope, the game slows down so the cycle takes longer and the timer runs out earlier, apparently, perfect play, not aiming while it spins and trying to keep shooting after the fail noise can still allow you to get the banana.
Cant believe this oversight
I boughy Hbomberguy's 'How Do I Beat Beaver Bother?' T-shirt as soon as it was made. Although the beetle is still worse!!
That's a good tshirt idea 😂
the beetle actually speeds up to pass you if you're ahead of it so the best strategy is to pull a mario kart and bag all the required coins before passing them then speed blitz near the end
personally I've never been able to pull off this strategy. The beetle is much faster at the very end when walking to the finish line. You need a whole lot of distance to win just because of that section!
@@superjoebros64 tbf what's stopping you from just smacking the beetle when its trying to run past you
Oh yes, "Beaver bother", and the mechanical fish! I always turn the volume off on my TV for those games, it reduces 90 % of the stress ;)
As a kid, I hated "Batty barrel bandit". The fruits were rolling too fast, and I had a lot of trouble with it.
Also, Lanky´s labyrinth in "Creepy castle". Now I know it, but back then, it made me frustrated because I could no find the exit/ banana within the time limit.
haha that's pretty smart though, shutting off the volume! I should try that
I think that the DK ice maze was supposed to have the DK barrel ability that turns him invincible. You can see crystal coconuts lining the inside of the igloo but they serve no purpose there.
Agreed! Always thought it was odd it wasn't there
That mechanical fish banana... if you have the sniper scope upgrade for your gun, it messes with the frame rate and timer, making it so you have 0 room for any mistakes.
truly an awful oversight!
Great job with the list! You hit almost every one on my worst golden banana list. I never liked the owl race because the jet pack controls are awful. It feels like you can either go up or down in a zigzag but flying in a straight line is almost impossible. The game would freeze on me after so many attempts of the race too. I really enjoyed Donkey Kong 64 but so many of the challenges were unfair and WAY too difficult that I gave up on completing it 100% 😔
oh gosh that's really unfortunate! I would put the 2 jetpack challenges within my top 10
Now I can say with pride I can win on my first or second try without much trouble today.
...
Beaver Bother, on the other hand...
one day at a time 😂
Beetle race can be cheesed by staying behind the turtle near the end, then zooming on the last part of the slide
I agree! An odd decision here!
It's really disappointing too that there are two BBs at the FINAL stage. Like, if they were introduced earlier in the playthrough at least you could wash them down with a bunch more of the satisfying challenges, rather than the other way around.
It's a really cruel way to end the game 😭 especially for what is otherwise an awesome world
I played this game so much I actively look forward to the beetle races now because they're challenging and involved.
That's fair!
For that final Diddy banana I found if you take out one of the corner guys then sit on the edge of the corner looking to the middle, you can toss grenades in and they home in on the middle guys then jump over and move to the corners to finish the other corners
Certainly a technique for me to attempt!
You named the top two for me. The final Beaver bother at the top of Creepy Castle and the Diddy Kong cabin are the two hardest for sure....well besides the DK Arcade of course 😵💫
For real 🙄 you get it! The arcade game frustrates me so much I dedicated a whole video to it lol
Well given that Creepy Castle is the penultimate level in the game, it wouldn't surprise me that there would twice the hell of Beaver Bother challenges.
I guess they have to balance is out somehow 😭
You actually CAN use the handstand barrel right before the second race with the rabbit and of course I was only able to get the golden banana that way, but one of my worst golden bananas is Krazy Kong Klamor, I swear if they gave you .005 seconds less to hit every Kremlin in that minigame it would’ve been impossible for me. I also think it’s in the Fungi Forest AND it’s REQUIRED in order to leave the room you’re stuck in which means I cant just skip it and leave it for later
Wait you have to beat it?? I never noticed this. Alternatively you could pause and select "exit world". That's still rough
Great nostalgic touch if you ask me 🍌🐵
Haha that's awesome!! Glad you're enjoying these! 🍌🐒
The beetle races were some of my favorite bananas in the game tbh, lmao
Couldn't be me 😂 that's good though!
Speaking of the mechanical fish banana, Cybershell’s video on it is interesting. After a certain point of the game, the banana is literally impossible to get after a certain point.
yes! I can't believe the scope became such an oversight
About time this video came out. You've been pushing it hard for days now!
It was not intended! 😂
So for me the Gator herding is #1
Rabbit one is #2
totally agreed with you here! these are not fun haha
