zelda 2 is the greatest indie game of the ever edit: now that I have actually watched the video...Yoku is based. Obra Dinn is based. Golf Story is based. Momodora is based. Snoman is based. (zelda 2 still based)
CrossCode is so overlooked it hurts. Seven years in the making and it's easily the best RPG I've ever played, yet I don't see anyone talking about it unless I look for it.
if you havent, youtube the talk the devs give about the animation methods they used, its total genius stuff and why everything is so natural and fluid, such a well programmed game that, but yes - hard! captures a despairing situation a lot better than pretty much everything out there, a gem
Oh my gosh I just got it and 15 hours in, I have experienced something in the game that I can only say as the best gaming moment in my life. Easily in my top 5 but yeah it’s really hard and basically unfair. But somehow that works in its favor....
Yes!!! I was going to suggest Rain World until I saw your message. Definitely my top platformer of the past decade. Too bad so many reviewers gave it a bad rating, because of the difficulty of the game.
@@wasteoftime41 I understand why they dislike it (even if I disagree), but I’d argue the game was meant as an experience that will stick with you, not a game to play for fun. Well unless you count the arena mode, that thing is such a blast with friends.
Wow it's Justin Y. Instead of me actually saying anything related to his comment, let me point out the fact that he's everywhere even though everyone probably already knows.
OneShot is so extremely creative. I can't think of many other games that use the medium quite like that. It's an experience that could only be possible through this medium, and that's something to be celebrated.
OneShot is hard to call underrated considering nearly everybody that plays it loves it, but I can also very highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys a narrative-focused experience.
A great underrated indie game for me this decade is Death Road To Canada! It's a rogue-like in which you and some jerks you find on the street have a road trip to Canada so that you can be safe from Zombies. You have to fight zombies, find crazy weapons, and train your team. You'll meet wacky characters (many of which are parodies of other famous characters), get in bizarre situations, and you can even give a dog an Ak-47! Not to mention that it can get really tough, with up to 500 zombies on screen! Death Road To Canada is one of my favorite games, and if you're into rogue-likes or funny games, I encourage you to give it a try!
Lisa: The Painful is undoubtedly my favorite indie game. It’s fangame Lisa:the pointless is ridiculously polished while maintaining the core themes of the original with a completely new caste and chunk of the world. Never have I seen such a mastery of tone and emotion. Both these games played me like a fiddle. The painful more than the pointless.
Have you heard about these underrated Indie Games before? Undertale, Shovel Knight, Celeste, Hollow Knight, The Stanley Parable... These indie games are SO obscure, almost nobody's talked about them..... wait a minute
Planet Alpha is one that I absolutely loved that you never really hear about. Picked it up when it was on sale for a dollar. It’s basically Inside on a strange planet. no dialogue and environmental storytelling and puzzles throughout if you see this on sale it’s an absolute steal.
oh man I'm SO happy you not only added JSAB to the list but made it number 1!!! it's one of my favorite games, it's so fun to play over and over.... if I could add anything to the list I might add pikuniku- it's incredibly fun and cute and has similar vibes to wandersong but I never hear people talk about it!
Affordable Space Adventures is an adventure/puzzle game and has probably some of the best use of the Wii U gamepad, brilliant local multiplayer, beautiful world design, a dry and dark sense of humour, and even a really great use of Miiverse, before it was shut down. Definite must-play
One of my personal favorites is still Downwell. Crazy fast paced gameplay. Super tight controls. Constant risk/reward decisions being made. Absolutely love it!
Underhero Great little platformer with a unique combat system (I've heard it compared to Paper Mario), creative worlds and characters, and a really gripping story.
0:00 Intro 1:22 Tiny Barbarian DX 2:25 Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 3:25 Wandersong 4:22 Yoku's Island Express 5:46 Return of the Obra Dinn 6:55 Golf Story 7:53 Volgarr the Viking 8:58 Momodora 9:58 The End is Nigh 11:11 Just Shapes & Beats 12:16 Outro
Im not sure if this is too recent or not, but by far my favorite indie game that came out this year is Hylics 2. It's not a game for everyone, but I enjoy what it does offer: a very interesting claymation artstyle, JRPG combat that's alot more than just mashing the attack button and making you plan out strategies for every fight, and the very chill but surreal soundtrack
One game that flew almost completely under the radar is the (sometimes brutally hard) platformer N++. It's a pretty simplistic looking game, however there is a lot of depth put into game design in addition to the mass of levels to play.
I'd say Steamworld Heist is one of those games made just for me. It's a perfect blend of steampunk and 2D turn-based fun. I just can't get enough! I've literally had to buy it 3 times now, and I'd keep paying for it if I had to.
I'd like to recommend SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech. A combination of an oldschool JRPG and slay the spires card battling system where you can theorycraft combos and explore a picturesque fairytale world, the consistent unlocks and switch ups in strategy and enemies really keep you hooked for the entire playtime. It even has a hard mode which really ups the spicyness and tests your deckbuilding and understanding, to the point of needing to switch loadouts per boss. Of course it has the SteamWorld moniker so you know its polished to a brilliant sheen, amazing visuals and music, a definite recommend if you have any interest in card games and rpgs.
For me The Sexy Brutale was an amazing take on the groundhogs day type approach where you have to stop people from dying and reliving the time to get it right, also the music and story are great! Crosscode was also one of my favorite games of all time, which was very surprising as it came out of nowhere to me when it first released on PC. Love the content as always!
I saw Dandara on screen, got hyped and then immediately down because I knew it would not be featured if it was showcasing on the opening. Said that, my underrated indie game of the decade is called "A Lenda do Herói", that is somewhat a basic platform, but the narrator sing your actions as you play, and that gimmick alone makes you keep playing it more and more just to find out all the rhymes. It released in 2016, and unfortunately, it lost a lot of marketing because the game is in portuguese, which means most of the world couldn't understand the whole gimmick of the game. It was later re-released in english as "Songs for a Hero".
I immediately went on Steam to put Tiny Barbarian DX on my wishlist, but holy cow, it's 27,99€ ($29,99)! That's absolutely crazy for a 2013 pixel art platformer.
Well there's Suits: A Business RPG, which wears the OFF inspirations on its sleeve. Truth be told, you can find a ton of unique and underappreciated projects that were made in RPG Maker. It's incredible how much creativity such a simple tool can spark.
Ok, gotta check these out now. One of my favorite underrated games of the last decade has got to be Anodyne 2. It's an amazing combination of early 2000s 3D platforming and 2D Zelda style dungeons with an engaging story to top it all off. The art direction is really wacky and the music is great as well
My underrated indie gem of choice is Fist's Elimination Tower--it's not SUPER difficult but still quite challenging, and basically a constant onslaught of clever jump challenges wrapped up in a twisted game show aesthetic, right down to the player character (a constantly-changing roster of "challengers" represent your stockpile of lives). It's not a very complicated game but it's one of my favs and one nobody ever seems to have heard of.
This feels like a love letter to your channel as much as a top 10 list of games, I remember learning about so many of these from you and seeing you cover them again in 2020 is wonderful. So happy to have more content from you again my guy, can't wait to see what's next!
One of my newly found favourites is One Step from Eden, it's a roguelike rpg with a grid system that is similar to Megaman Battle Network with a pixel style
Well, I'd say that the best game I've ever played is Transistor. I see people talking about Bastion and Hades fairly frequently, but I feel like Transistor is as concise as bastion and as polished as Hades. More importantly, it was the game that introduced me to the feeling of grief. I usually like games I can play through multiple times, working to master over the course of months, but I started my second play-through not to master the game, but to change that which I realized I could not change. I usually play games with a very mechanical mindset, but Transistor is a game I engaged with mostly on an emotional level. It kind of makes me wish I could enjoy traditional rpgs for more than a few hours.
I will always bump A Robot Named Fight! It's so cool. A lot of people have tried to make Metroidvania roguelite combinations and they always have to sacrifice something at the core of one or the other because they are genres that really shouldn't work together. One is inherently crafted and intentional and the other defined by procedural generation. A Robot Named Fight! is the only game I've seen that successfully combines and fully achieves both and does so in some really clever ways. When it first started every map would end up being an upside down, backwards "e" shape but now it does have more varied layouts and different biomes that get swapped in and it's still expanding and growing three years after release. It definitely wears it's Super Metroid inspiration on it's sleeve (you'll permanently unlock SM style wall jumping after you successfully sequence break) but also does a lot of it's own thing. It's been my go to kill an hour or so game for a long time, only recently getting usurped by Hades but I'll probably be playing it longer than I play Hades which is saying something as good as that is.
Phoenotopia Awakening is my pick. It came out pretty recently and didn't have the greatest marketing, so not many people know about. But it's an absolute gem that, while brutal, is packed full of secrets and so many things to do.
Yo, have you heard of “Unheard”? It’s a detective game where all you have is a map and an adaptive audio recording of a crime that lets you hear what you would hear standing at your icon’s location during the crime. It’s a super unique idea and well executed!
Glad you mentioned JS&B, it's really one hell of a good game. I'd say it's a spiritual successor to the Bit.Trip series, especially Bit.Trip Void. Still hoping for a retail release of JS&B. But I'm also a bit sad you didn't honour Outer Wilds in this video (even though you showed gameplay at the end). That'd be my game of the decade for sure!
Outer Wilds is phenomenal and definitely underrated, though I think its finally get some of the deserved attention. I just did a GGD on it earlier this year so I didn't want to repeat myself about it too much, and decided to highlight some new entries in its stead. Easily one of my faves as well!
Hands down, my pick for an underrated indie is Copy Kitty. It is a freaking CRIME that the only significant exposure it seems to have gotten was a raocow let's play several years back.
Allow me to expand on why it's awesome. Young alien catgirl think her power of copying other people power is lame so her bug uncle send her a military grade VR simulation where you blow up magical robots to prove her wrong. This game is what if Kirby and Mega Man had a child. In-game, you can copy up to 3 enemy powers at once and combine them, each combination creating a unique attack. Since there are (IIRC) 10 basic powers, that give you several hundreds of unique move you can use because the game couple who made the game are apparently mad lads. But wait, on top of that there are unique one shot powers mostly used in bosses fight to make awesome battles where you beat up the opponent with their own powers. And among those awesome battles, this game have its own version of Meta Knight because WHY NOT! You can also play as they uncle who can also copy powers but he doesn't do it the same way so that another hundred more unique attacks because WHY NOT and his final battles is just lolz, rainbow and love! XD And then, when you clear the game, you get hard mode which actually remix the levels and continue the story intead of just making the numbers bigger with even more climatic boss fights and there's also extra stages where, taking a page from Order of Ecclesia you fight the forces of darkness and then the hard mode version have the angelic version of heaven. Oh and if you still have some doubts, there also a free demo. :D
An underrated indie game that more people should play is "Yumori Forest" a top down visually striking action game Released in 2018, it only has 11 reviews on steam but a 100% positive score.
Three of these were on my wishlist, two I picked up during sales and have never played, and three have me extremely interested. Thanks as always, Snoman!
Bug Fables was that special game that felt like it was made for me. As a MASSIVE fan of all the Mario RPG games, Bug Fables is just about everything I could ever ask for in a game. I didn't think it was possible, but it surpassed masterpieces like Shovel Knight and Hollow Knight as my favorite indie game of all time.
Definitely check out Timespinner. It's one of my favorite indie games and it doesn't get talked about enough and it's a shame because it's a fantastic game. One of the first games I backed on Kickstarter and the one that got me back into Metroidvania style games. It mixes time freezing mechanics with various weapons and upgrades to keep you guessing, and has a pretty interesting story.
OneShot is a surreal 4th-wall-breaking RPG that I think is really underrated. Hard to explain without spoiling, but the closest game to compare to is Undertale yet totally different. Found it by accident and loved every moment of it
Another absolute masterpiece is ZeroRanger. If you've ever been wanting to get into shoot 'em ups, its very approachable even though its quite difficult. I cannot recommend it enough
La-Mulana 2, not only underrated but also underlooked, I see almost no one talking about the game, and that's a shame since the game has the perfect blend of puzzle/metroidvania elements to it that I've not seen emulated anywhere else
AAAAAHHHH I screamed when I saw yokus island express and just shapes and beats. I LOVE just shapes and beats, but unfortunately I encountered a glitch where I archived just shapes to save space, and now it won't show up anywhere. I look in my deleted software and it's not there, but it still registers as bought on the eshop. Sad I'll never get to experience such a great game again :( Also play rain world
ZeroRanger would be my pick to be included in such a list. It's IMO the best shmup to release over the last decade, with creative mechanics, stages packed with variety, and a unique structure that makes it welcoming to beginners. It takes influences from older titles but creates something that feels distinctly modern.
It took like almost a decade to make too and it's still being supported to this day. It's story is really something else and it sucks that despite Dunkey's reccomendation of the game, nobody talks about it EVER.
Just because I saw nobody talk about it here already, Deadbolt. It's a sidescrolling stealth game that plays a little bit like Hotline Miami and Katana Zero, but in a world where everyone is undead. You play as death itself and dismantle illegal trafics run by zombies, vampires and skeletons.
For me, the best underrated game I had played this decade has to be NOISZ. It's a bullet hell game where you fight nothing but bosses and you attack by pressing to the beat of the music. Same thing applies for blocking blue bullets. It also handles boss HP in a very cool way. The fight only ends when the song ends, so when you get their HP to 0, they enter overflow, where you just do as much damage as possible, but the boss is much stronger in that mode! There are multiple verses per song and each time a verse ends, you and the boss restores HP. You also get multiple different styles, like crash, which gives you a special attack that you can only activate if you sacrifice your combo, or dancer, which is for those who have trouble pressing to the beat, or Harmonic, which allows you to block red bullets, but cannot block blue bullets, only if you press block after blocking blue bullets. This game by the way is really hard, especially when fighting them on Overload, which only unlocks for that boss if you S it on hard! It also has some DLC and a expansion. The expansion has some of the best bosses in the game (EXCEPT *QUICKSILVER* ), along with multiple final bosses! Not just that, the expansion also adds Modules that change how your style works, more story, and Courses that have you fight 3 selected bosses in a row, but you can't use the same style and module twice and beating them unlocks even more styles and modules! By the way, the soundtrack is amazing and fits each boss really well! Even the worst boss *QUICKSILVER* is no exception. This game is amazing enough as it is, but ver. 2.5 is coming soon and will add even MOAR contant, like a difficulty higher than Overload for the expansion bosses, the final challenge course known as Ultimate +, and some really cool changes. Anyways, this is such an underrated game, having only 25 reviews on Steam, so I recommend those who like bullet hell and rhythm, along with those who love a tough challenge or bosses.
One Way Heroics (not the Mystery Chronicle rehash thing by Spike Chunsoft), an interesting roguelike with lot of secrets, replayability, unlockables, yada-yada, most importantly a clever defining gimmick and a constant sense of mystery despite its terrible presentation values. Bought it three times. The Switch version has some legibility issues, I would recommend the PC version instead.
Many people probably won't think it's all that good of a game, but I personally really love "gods will be watching" It's a simple puzzle game with a simple story, yet it's one of the most memorable games I've played
I'd say Hypnospace: Outlaw, a totally radical 90's internet simulator that has some of the best worldbuilding I've ever seen. And N++, a 2D that is better than Celeste; yeah that's right, I said it! It is legitimately a perfect video game. Also, I will always consider Obra Dinn and Outer Wilds underrated no matter how many people play them, they deserve everyone to know about them, so never feel bad about mentioning them.
One of my favorites was Pode. It’s a beautiful 2-player puzzle platformer that I played through with my dad. It has a really cool Norwegian aesthetic and the ambient music makes it a very relaxing co-op experience
Mo: Astray. It's one of the most beautiful games I've played in a while and it's got really interesting and fun mechanics. By far however the world building is the best (maybe apart from the comics at the end of each chapter)
The most underrated for me is definitely Sundered. It's a Roguelite Metroidvania that's fully hand drawn and is based in a lot of eldritch stuff. It is so good but barely anyone talks about it
Zero Ranger has to be the most underrated game i've come across, the best that shoot and up has to offer with such a great twist in it, so many unexpected things happen during the cource of the game, and in the end creating such a unique and memorable experience.
An indie game I really feel like is underrated is Iconoclaste! A really good MetroidVania with an heart breaking story line! Oh and also a killer soundtrack! I honestly don't know how known this game is? But I feel like nobody is talking about it, and it's a shame!
Ooooh, I do remember a moment when I saw wandersong on eShop. I just immediately fell in love with the art style and music. Finished the game in couple of evenings
I'd say Sunless Skies is pretty underrated, but I guess it shouldn't be on the list after it had some big spotlight thanks to that review of Mandalore.
Y'all gotta check out The Hex. Made by the creator of Pony Island, it's a meta-as-hell experience that'll throw you for about a hundred and twenty loops, and it's well worth the price
What a great idea for a video! I’ve played so many underrated games thanks to you. Edit: Not joking when I say Golf Story is in my top 10 favs of all time. I love it so much!
My most underrated game of this decade is definitely Zombie Night Terror. It’s an amazing puzzle/strategy game based on controlling zombies and mutating/upgrading them to infect and kill all humans. It looks amazing and has one of my favorite soundtracks (Just take a listen to meatnight club) Everyone please play this game it has gone so unnoticed
Dandara is mine - Metroidvania with a unique movement mechanic, an area that does things in terms of navigation I have never seen elsewhere, and some really cool boss fights.
Here are my five of my own suggestions: *Ghost 1.0* - Metroidvania This is one of the very few games that I discovered entirely on my own, while browsing the metroidvania tag on Steam one day. It’s a game from the same developer as UnEpic, which I believe is a little better known, and I would personally say that this one is the better of the two. Overall it’s a pretty solid game for a one-man team, with a good amount of content and a fairly amusing story. The only criticism I’ve got would be for the voice acting. While the main trio of characters all have great voices, especially Ghost herself, the antagonists are... a little cringe, to be honest. *Deponia: The Complete Journey* - Point-n-click Adventure I got this game (which is technically a collection of three games) for free from Humble Bundle back in January of 2019, and I didn’t really have too many expectations for it. But it turned out to be incredibly well done, for one specific reason: presentation. While the plot might be a small bit cliché at times, it’s made so engaging by the way it’s shown to you. Every chapter has this transition segment of a character, based on one of the developers, whom plays a bunch of variations on the same song with different lyrics that recaps the events that took place, and that carries the story into the next chapter. (I don’t feel I’m doing a good job of explaining it, so I just recommend playing it and seeing it for yourself. I would even recommend it if you aren’t a fan of this kind of game; I don’t play games for story, and I still thoroughly enjoyed it.) It also earns my personal award for the best animation of any game, particularly for the characters’ facial expressions. I really love the look of the game overall, which is another thing I didn’t expect when I first downloaded the game. *CrossCode* - Action RPG according to the developers, but I consider it more Action-Adventure Quite possibly the most well-known underrated title by this point, I don’t feel there’s much to say that you won’t hear from other people as well. All I will ask is this: why or how is this game underrated? You’re talking about a title that is 60+ hours in length, with a level of quality & polish that could rival virtually any of the top indie giants, and yet for some reason there was almost no coverage of it. I simply don’t see a reason for why CrossCode wasn’t the, like... Hollow Knight of 2018, or something. *Tangledeep* - Traditional Roguelike Here’s a game that takes a very niche genre, and gives it a coat of paint that makes it far more appealing to a wider audience. If you’re someone who loves building up your character’s abilities and equipment in an RPG, then this is possibly one of the best games for you. There is such an enormous amount of options with classes, skills, weapons, armor, etc. to choose from, and the ability to fully customize what properties all of your equipment has means that you can create dozens of different playstyles. This is on top of the pool of gameplay modifiers that can change the core experience to be easier or harder, as well as the DLC that adds a bunch of new optional boss fights, new items and challenges, and a second playable character with her own unique progression system and story. I’ve played Tangledeep for about 80 hours, and I’ve probably only seen about half of all the content there is. *Rain World* - Survival Platformer Currently my favorite underrated game, this one is by far the most unwelcoming to new players. I’ve expressed my thoughts about Rain World several times in the past, so I’ll just simplify this by telling you to search up Matthewmatosis on UA-cam and watch his video titled “Recommending Rain World”. It does the best job of describing what makes this game so unique and interesting.
Warlock's Tower. Ratalaika games have the reputation of just being easy trophies, but Warlock's Tower is a fun retro-looking puzzle game that game boy fans should play
One game I know for sure doesn't get enough credit for how good it is is the Talos Principle. It has some of the best puzzles I've ever played, looks really good visually, and ties it all together with a really well written and thought provoking story. I highly recommend it to any puzzle game fan
If you liked JSAB, I really reccomend you try "No Straight Roads". The soundtrack in that game is amazing! Basically a Hack & Shlash where all the enemies move and attack to the beat.
Well, I'm quite fond of the game Unworthy. It labelled itself as a metroidvania without jumping, but later I discovered it's basically a 2D pixellated Souls-like. Every time your health gets to zero, a grim reaper thing appears and cuts your head off while the word UNWORTHY appears on the screen. I recommend it if only just for that alone.
The one that immediately comes to mind (because I've been playing it alot recently) is Huntdown. A run and gun that nails the 80's aesthetics in all ways and is a blast to play, look at and listen to. Also the boss fights can be over the top at times (See Ringo Road Rage)
Imma' throw Copy Kitty in there. Fantastic action game, ludicrous amount of content and huge potential for experimentation and cool stuff. Also, pretty sick level creator. It did worlds before Mario Maker 2!
Glad to find someone else who knows about Copy Kitty for once! Easily one of the best games I've played and it's a big shame it got next to no coverage. Copy Kitty's got it all - fast paced, (usually) meaningfully designed levels, boss fights with great thematic and combat design to make them feel like a real spectacle, an almost wasteful amount of bonus content (there is sooooooooooo much bonus content) and even the game's "gimmick", which is that it has over 150 weapon combinations (formed from a combination of three different base weapons, of which there are ten), actually lives up to how good you'd hope for it to be for once - while there's some functional overlap with similar combinations, all of them are handcrafted and have at least one unique property (and that's in addition to the properties they inherit from the base weapons in the combo), the variety and depth is kind of nuts! (Though, an unfortunate byproduct of this is that the game's campaign actually isn't long enough for every weapon to get a chance to shine)
I'm not sure if this is underrated since it's one of the highest rated games on steam but a short hike is one of my favorite games this generation and I think I enjoyed it more than animal crossing. It has a calming soundtrack, gorgeous visuals, and tons of charming dialogue. It's just a really nice and short game that's only 8 dollars on steam, egs and switch. Definitely a high recommendation from me.
one of my personal favorites this decade was Evans remains. its just a cute puzzle platformer with great Atmosphere, interesting characters and a nice story. Especially in a time where I play a lot of games where u gonna be on ur toes the entire time like lol, its a nice relaxing change.
List of games I rate very highly and give reasonable odds you are unfamiliar with: Khimera, Cloudbuilt, HexCells Series, Tametsi, Half-minute Hero, Titan Souls, Dr. Langeskov, A Walk in the Dark, The King's Bird, One Step From Eden, Iji, Destop Dungeons, Bleed 1 & 2, One Way Heroics, Snakebird, Iconoclasts, Copy Kitty, Marie's Room, Gravity Ghost, The Gardens Between, Descenders, Concrete Jungle, The Void Rains Upon Her Heart, Simmiland.
I think Iconoclasts is pretty overlooked because people go in because they see "Metroidvania", and while yes, it has elements of it, its more of a action-puzzle platformer. It also comes with a deep story that caught me off guard but I welcomed it. Right now I'm getting the last achievement, which is basically doing a no-hit run and I'm having a blast. I just think more people should play it.
If you love just shapes and beats I have to suggest project arrhythmia it is basically the same thing as just shapes and beats but it has user generated content and they make extremely fun levels

wowza. that game looks purdddddy interesting
zelda 2 is the greatest indie game of the ever

Zelda 2 is the second greatest gaming sequel after Knack 2.
Supaaaaaa Mario Bros two! >>>>>> all

Even though it is pretty popular I would say an underrated indie would definitely be Crosscode, I love that game so much
Scrolled down to comment this.
yes crosscode is great and I think it is less popular then most of the games on this list.
One of my favorite games
Hi!
I was about to say that
CrossCode is so overlooked it hurts.
Seven years in the making and it's easily the best RPG I've ever played, yet I don't see anyone talking about it unless I look for it.
I found that game on Game Pass a few months back, and I have to say, I wasn’t pleasantly surprised. Crosscode became my shit pretty quickly
I should really get around to playing that. I played the tech demos, and I bought the game.
Was* whoops
playing through this game right now and it is incredible holy crap
Please stop commenting games I only have so much time in the day to look them all up.
oh, feel ya, bro!
I really recommend Rain World. It’s HELLISH at times (most of the time) but has one of the most rewarding learning curves I’ve ever experienced.
if you havent, youtube the talk the devs give about the animation methods they used, its total genius stuff and why everything is so natural and fluid, such a well programmed game that, but yes - hard! captures a despairing situation a lot better than pretty much everything out there, a gem
A man of culture.
If Dwarf Fortress went on steam for 2020 we can easily say we have an underrated indie game for this decade.
Didn't expect to see a Justin Y comment literally 6 seconds after I clicked lol
Wow it's Justin Y. Instead of me actually saying anything related to his comment, let me point out the fact that he's everywhere even though everyone probably already knows.
Is it true he doesn’t watch the videos he comments on
Hey Justin. Good to see you back!
(:
How many decades old is Dwarf Fortress at this point?
When I saw Wandersong, I nearly screamed. Absolutely one of my favorite games EVER, and it's deeply underrated.
It’s soooo good
i don't think it's underrated thou :/
@@ven6815 I barely hear anyone mention it.
YESSSSSSSSSSAASAHHHHHH
try oneshot im not saying it should be on the list but its good
Y E S
OneShot is so extremely creative. I can't think of many other games that use the medium quite like that. It's an experience that could only be possible through this medium, and that's something to be celebrated.
oneshot feels like celeste again due to the number of times i see it recommended as a hidden gem tbh
OneShot is hard to call underrated considering nearly everybody that plays it loves it, but I can also very highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys a narrative-focused experience.
disclaimer before you comment i did not say it should be on the list i just said he should play it
A great underrated indie game for me this decade is Death Road To Canada!
That game moved me like crazy
oh, dude! thats like such a game...painful also moved me more that pointless
thanks for reminding me of such a wonderful game in my life!
HEYO FELLOW LISA FAN !!!
Have you heard about these underrated Indie Games before? Undertale, Shovel Knight, Celeste, Hollow Knight, The Stanley Parable...
These indie games are SO obscure, almost nobody's talked about them..... wait a minute
Huh? What are those?
I don't actually know what The Stanley Parable is lol.
Shapes and Beats is SUCH a good game. The music absolutely slaps and close to me is phenomenal. Also the little blue block friends are adorable
Man, great game! There were too many good indies, this should've been a top 20!
Downwell is excellent, I hated it on launch but got into it and then got so hooked 😅
Its weird because Just Beats was so popular at MagFest that I never got a turn, there was always a crowd of people around it
So glad to see someone giving Wandersong and Momodora the spotlight they deserve! Absolutely wonderful titles through and through.
Underhero
Great little platformer with a unique combat system (I've heard it compared to Paper Mario), creative worlds and characters, and a really gripping story.

1:22 Tiny Barbarian DX
2:25 Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
3:25 Wandersong
4:22 Yoku's Island Express

7:53 Volgarr the Viking
8:58 Momodora

Im not sure if this is too recent or not, but by far my favorite indie game that came out this year is Hylics 2. It's not a game for everyone, but I enjoy what it does offer: a very interesting claymation artstyle, JRPG combat that's alot more than just mashing the attack button and making you plan out strategies for every fight, and the very chill but surreal soundtrack
The End is Nigh is an excellent example of an underrated indie game.
One game that flew almost completely under the radar is the (sometimes brutally hard) platformer N++. It's a pretty simplistic looking game, however there is a lot of depth put into game design in addition to the mass of levels to play.
Ahh yes, my personal hell
I'd say Steamworld Heist is one of those games made just for me. It's a perfect blend of steampunk and 2D turn-based fun. I just can't get enough! I've literally had to buy it 3 times now, and I'd keep paying for it if I had to.
Steamworld Dig 2 and Heist are amazing
But loads of people have played the Steamworld games
I'd love more playable characters in this one. Sally's kill shot skill is so great :-D
@@meathir4921 Not as many as who have played Obra Dinn and Golf Story, which are also on this list.
Oh absolutely. All the Steamworld games are brilliant. My favourite is still Steamworld Dig 2 though.
I'd say OFF, but it came out in 2008. There was an English translation in 2011, though. Mario: The Music Box would also be a good pick.
Wow I forgot that Mario: The Music Box existed. That's gotta be one of the wierdest game to exist.
Oh my god YES, OFF IS SUCH A GREAT GAME DUDE. But yeah, not in this decade so...
Well there's Suits: A Business RPG, which wears the OFF inspirations on its sleeve.
Truth be told, you can find a ton of unique and underappreciated projects that were made in RPG Maker. It's incredible how much creativity such a simple tool can spark.
I just remembered Horace. That's a hidden gem, too.
Mario: The Music Box? Is this a Mario game? Or is the Mario in Mario: The Music Box different from the Mario i am talking about?
What a humble guy, starts recommending other games when he's the creator of Tiny Barbarian :)
@@snomangaming It's easy when someone else already made such a strong recommendation for TB ;)
If you love a challenging indie game with amazing music I would highly recommend Furi
It's great to see someone appreciate Transistor as much as I do.. definitely on my top 3 of all time!
Nice to see Brazilian devs represented with Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. Fantastic game.
And also Dandara in the intro. ^_^
Ima just say Bug fables. Bug gang where you at?
right here
Played it through for the first time 2 weeks ago sorry I am late.

O that sounds awesome
@@snomangaming I am surprised that there was no mention of don’t starve. It’s cool
@@toast207 I wouldn't say its underrated
Hope you enjoy it!
My favourite underrated indies of the last decade, that I'd recommend to everyone are Anodyne 2, the Inner World and Figment.
La-Mulana 2, not only underrated but also underlooked, I see almost no one talking about the game, and that's a shame since the game has the perfect blend of puzzle/metroidvania elements to it that I've not seen emulated anywhere else
please,
For the love of God,
If you're reading this
PLAY MOMODORA
It’s cheap af on PS4 atm
You convinced me. I will play it after I finished FF9 and Pikmin3.
I might try again.
I can't beat the first boss (arthropod Demon Edea) on normal difficulty, nor the second boss (Lubella) on easy difficulty.
Ditto, I played this game 3 times in a row
@@jcmh5192file In about six months at least! kkk Just for FF9! :)
ZeroRanger is an indie title I feel just never got the recognizion it deserved. It was amazing yet so few people actually talk about it.
that's how it is with some indies. they don't get enough lights on! such a bummer!
Love your passion for it man
so glad Momodora made it into this list. I love that game so much!
Many people probably won't think it's all that good of a game, but I personally really love "gods will be watching"
It's a simple puzzle game with a simple story, yet it's one of the most memorable games I've played
I have played and enjoyed so many more Indies in the past year and that is largely thanks to you Snowman.
Glad to hear it!
Mo: Astray. It's one of the most beautiful games I've played in a while and it's got really interesting and fun mechanics. By far however the world building is the best (maybe apart from the comics at the end of each chapter)
idk, i found it kind of meh, nice game enough, but I feel like the experience doesn't hold up sometimes, level clarity isn't always there ^^'
My favourite game is Battleblock Theatre. Every elements seemed to have been made just for me.
The most underrated for me is definitely Sundered. It's a Roguelite Metroidvania that's fully hand drawn and is based in a lot of eldritch stuff. It is so good but barely anyone talks about it
Yoo I’ve played it it’s dope
Zero Ranger has to be the most underrated game i've come across, the best that shoot and up has to offer with such a great twist in it, so many unexpected things happen during the cource of the game, and in the end creating such a unique and memorable experience.
I saw a longplay of it. The thumbnail was describing it as a shmup version of Undertale.
That was a understable description. XD
No joke , Sports Story is still one of my most anticipated games on the switch 😭😭
An indie game I really feel like is underrated is Iconoclaste! A really good MetroidVania with an heart breaking story line! Oh and also a killer soundtrack!
I honestly don't know how known this game is? But I feel like nobody is talking about it, and it's a shame!
Actually facts
Scourgebringer is great, has very satisfying controls and juicy combat and you definitely should try it
(It's a 2D action rogue-like platformer)
Ooooh, I do remember a moment when I saw wandersong on eShop. I just immediately fell in love with the art style and music. Finished the game in couple of evenings
Snoman: *puts jsab on the list and describes the music-oriented aspects*
Me: Well wouldn’t you love NOISZ then, it’s literally that but better~
WHAT gotta check that out 👀
Hi. Looks like I am not the only NOISZ comment.
wait what
@@snomangaming also, if u like jsab, try out project arrythmia! it's basically jsab but more colorful, and community driven
MO Astray is really underrated gem
It's always good to see momodora receive some love, the soundtrack is amazing and the mood is just so dark yet chill
dig ya dude!
A Short Hike is my favorite indie. It is so much deeper than it first appears. The movement is truly a joy.
What a great idea for a video! I’ve played so many underrated games thanks to you.
Edit: Not joking when I say Golf Story is in my top 10 favs of all time. I love it so much!
That's awesome! Glad you enjoyed :)
I am incredibly huge on the Banner Saga trilogy. Those games are sick
My most underrated game of this decade is definitely Zombie Night Terror. It’s an amazing puzzle/strategy game based on controlling zombies and mutating/upgrading them to infect and kill all humans.
It looks amazing and has one of my favorite soundtracks (Just take a listen to meatnight club)
Everyone please play this game it has gone so unnoticed
If you've ever played Lemmings (released on every platform known to man), its a spiritual successor to it.
It's even available on mobile for a few bucks. Down with free-to-play! All hail the cheap but awesome games!
Dandara is mine - Metroidvania with a unique movement mechanic, an area that does things in terms of navigation I have never seen elsewhere, and some really cool boss fights.
Here are my five of my own suggestions:
*Ghost 1.0* - Metroidvania
This is one of the very few games that I discovered entirely on my own, while browsing the metroidvania tag on Steam one day.
*Deponia: The Complete Journey* - Point-n-click Adventure
I got this game (which is technically a collection of three games) for free from Humble Bundle back in January of 2019, and I didn’t really have too many expectations for it.
*CrossCode* - Action RPG according to the developers, but I consider it more Action-Adventure
Quite possibly the most well-known underrated title by this point, I don’t feel there’s much to say that you won’t hear from other people as well.
*Tangledeep* - Traditional Roguelike
Here’s a game that takes a very niche genre, and gives it a coat of paint that makes it far more appealing to a wider audience.
*Rain World* - Survival Platformer
Currently my favorite underrated game, this one is by far the most unwelcoming to new players. I’ve expressed my thoughts about Rain World several times in the past, so I’ll just simplify this by telling you to search up Matthewmatosis on UA-cam and watch his video titled “Recommending Rain World”. It does the best job of describing what makes this game so unique and interesting.
One very overlooked indie game has to be Luminous Plume. Super fun Action RPG
Warlock's Tower. Ratalaika games have the reputation of just being easy trophies, but Warlock's Tower is a fun retro-looking puzzle game that game boy fans should play
Another two that I'd add to the list are Streets of Rogue and Supraland. Both very good and highly underrated games.
One game I know for sure doesn't get enough credit for how good it is is the Talos Principle. It has some of the best puzzles I've ever played, looks really good visually, and ties it all together with a really well written and thought provoking story. I highly recommend it to any puzzle game fan
I actually just beat Wandersong! Now it’s one of my favorite games of all time!
Have you tried Bug Fables? It's very like the first 2 Paper Mario games, and a really fun RPG.
Golf Story is soooo fun. I occasionally remember they're making a sequel and I'm hyped all over again.
One game that I haven't seen pop up on UA-cam that much is Mo:Astray. I think it is a pretty solid and an underlooked game.
Lethal League Blaze is one of my favorite underrated indies. A real fun twist on fighting games.
I so agree! It also has one of the best hard modes in a game, as well as multiple final bosses!
@@LOLIPOP1136-q5t But that's why there endless mode! :P
"My goal is essentially to show you at least one game you haven't heard of before."
I head of every game on this list before, I demand my money back!
Dang it! You're too cool :P
There's sno man cooler than me!
