I love Rizzo’s “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” song so much. Rizzo is one of those characters you hate as a kid but as you grow up you realize that even though she acted tough and like she didn’t care she only did that because she felt really vulnerable and she was actually really hurt by Kinickie calling the baby a mistake (even though I don’t think he meant it that way) so that’s why she lied about it not being his but of course both she and Kinickie actually adored each other and were both really hurt by the misunderstanding.

That's pretty much why I sang the song in my jazz recital. The whole programme was called, "There are worse things I could do", and most songs were about/from the perspective of women in extreme love-related situations. "Love for sale", and another German prostitute song "Nur für's Geld" (only for the money), Kate Bush's "Wedding List", etc.
But Rizzo, full of passion and trying to find love and her place in the world, was the inspiration.

RIP Olivia. When this movie was filmed in the summer of 1977, ONJ was 28 and JT was 23. The movie was released a year later, so their ages often show up as 29 and 24, respectively. And Olivia was already a huge recording artist/star in the US. I know, I had her albums and listened to her music on the radio all the time in early 1970's. I was already a huge fan. Grease was originally a very popular Broadway Musical and then made into a movie. Olivia Newton John was a very popular singer in the ‘70’s and John Travolta was a movie star. So for both of them this was challenging their talents. When this movie came out it was very popular!!! I remember going to the movie theatre at least 3 or more times to see it. It’s a great story, very relatable (teen peer pressure) and the songs are super fun and catchy! Still to this day one of my favorite musicals!!!

I think people underrate Rizzo's story... She was dating Danny before the summer, and then he fell in love during summer with someone else!
So that's why she and her friend group were kinda mean to Sandy and why Rizzo made fun of her. After the sleepover she tried to make Danny jealous by flirting with his friend but he didn't care at all, that has to hurt.
Kenickie was the only one to treat her right but she didn't trust that any more.
She lied about him being the father to get him off the hook. And when she sings her songs she talks about how she goes out with a lot of guys but she never double crosses them.
    Great reaction!

When Sandy and Danny drive off into the sunset, Sandy looks back with a smile and a wave... Oof, that hits so differently now. I can't help but tear up. Sweet and genuine human. ONJ will be greatly missed.
Since yous guys seem to be jonesing for a deep dive into ONJ's catalogue, I can't encourage it enough! What's kind of gnarly to think about is that like Cher, ONJ had eras ... the early 70s was like her folk/country era, mid-70s contemporary pop era, and late 70s disco/pop rock-ish era, 80s pop, 90s new age, 00s kind of came full circle going back to her roots to country-ish
Just food for thought... No matter what, you can't go wrong with ONJ, she's friggin' awesome!

Olivia just recently passed away. This is one of the best musicals ever produced. Just so much fun. It has been reproduced in just about every high school drama class in the nation. What makes it so fun is this is just how life was like in the 50's and 60's, the good ole days! It was a time of wealth, fun, and innocence - along with racism and Viet Nam. But still this is just a great movie that you can't help but like and smile over.

Some great music in this movies but my favorite is probably Annette's solo *Treat Him Nicely*

I can't tell you how many times I have watched this movie! It came out in 1978 when I was 16. I was a huge Olivia fan before but this put her in the stratosphere for everyone. Grease is #26 out of 50 for highest grossing movie musical and #11 for highest grossing musical soundtrack. I was lucky enough to see her in concert four times and blessed to meet her twice. She was honestly one of the most genuine, kindest woman in show business. She never tired of speaking about her experience with cancer in the hopes of helping other people with their own struggles. She lent her name to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia and donated tens of thousands through fundraisers. She will be forever missed. Oh and as a side note Jeff Conaway who played Kinickie was Olivia's brother-in-law in real life.

Grease got its start as a local theater musical in Chicago before moving to Broadway in 1972 where it was a smash hit, becoming the longest running show (at the time). Some of the actors in the movie, like Jeff Conway and John Travolta were in the stage version. Travolta played the role of Doody in the national tour.
At the time Grease came out in the theaters in 1978, I was 9 years old and being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional household. As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of TV and went to the movies as a way of providing myself with escape and comfort from my misery.
Back then I was going to the movies with my then best friend. We were a couple of fanatics about the movies. We talked, read, ate, drank, and slept the movies. And we went to the movies together once a week, every week for a lot of years from the 1970s-1980s. We saw literally hundreds upon hundreds of movies over the years.
We tried to see every new movie that came out regardless of plot, genre (he loved horror films, I preferred comedy), critics reviews, who was starring in it, etc. So there was no particular reason we went to see Grease. It just happened to be a new movie that was just released.
As much as I loved the moviegoing experience in itself, you wouldnt think a movie musical such as Grease would appeal to a 9 year old boy. But being an abused, neglected child, Grease managed to hit me in the very right places at the very right time. Right from my very first viewing, it quickly became one of my all time favorite movies and remains that to this day. After seeing the movie, later on I would buy the Grease soundrack record album, the Grease bubble gum trading cards, and the Grease fotonovel.
In the following years, whenever Grease popped up on tv, I'd drop everything to watch it. Today I own the movie on DVD.
So, I say to the cast and crew of Grease, from the bottom of the heart of a young, abused boy, thank you. Thank you all so very, very much

You should check out John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever or Staying Alive, both good, both have great music.😎👌📽️🍿 Oh yes there is a soundtrack to Grease, how I know cause I have it, from grease one & 2. 👌

@Emma Howells, I never took stock of the actress that plays Rizzo...but she is kinda visually older than everyone else casted to play a High Schooler. I never knew of the age difference between Travolta and ONJ too.

    • @Demigord
      @Demigord Рік тому +1

Not really surprised ONJ was that old, but why would you cast a 33 year.old for a role that a) brought no star power and b) didn't require being a singer? There were thousands of women who would have taken that role, A number with equal acting chops

@@mikeshoe74 Yeah i didn't notice til in was older & realised either. Yeah 6 years difference, but looking at them you'd think John was older.

@@Demigord Sorry don't agree about Stockard' s star power, she was cast cause she was the best one for the character Rizo, plus she has been in several movies & tv series, she was in the movie practical magic with Sandra Bullock & Nicole kidman. And she can sing, just cause you don't think so doesn't mean she cant.

Great reaction! There was a whiff of 1950's nostalgia during the 1970's. There is nostalgia for the 1970's now, but back then there was a lot bad news. The Vietnam War was the first war the US lost, Opec wasn't selling our huge cars gas, Nixon impeached, record inflation and the movies were downtrodden, bleak and gritty (such as Taxi Driver). It was a BUMMER decade. People had had enough bad news, so escape movies such as Star Wars and Grease were a breath of fresh air.

The pants in the last scene were literally sewn on to Olivia! Apparently they kept the outfit a secret from the rest of the cast, so the reactions you saw from the boys were genuine.
    RIP beautiful Olivia ❤️

Grease was filmed in the summer of 1977 (Elvis died in August 1977) and released in June of 1978. Obviously the actors were much older than the parts that they played. Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was the oldest at 33. Travolta was 23, Olivia Newton-John turned 29 during filming. Lorenzo Lamas (the jock that Sandy goes with for a short while) at 19 and Eddie Deezen (Eugene) at 20 were the ones closest to high school age, LOL.

Best way to explain it: When this movie came out (78') it was a nostalgic look for my Generation, Gen X, at our parents Generation from the 50's. It was very similar to what you guys do, Asia and and BJ, with your UA-cam channels and looking back at prior generations, like your parents generations. This movie was the same thing for my generation, before there was a UA-cam. BTW a similar movie I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that did the same thing is "American Graffiti". RIP Olivia 😞

This is my ALL TIME favorite movie. The talent alone in this film is just incredible. I LOVED watching y’all enjoying this movie. It’s a classic, feel good and so much fun. Watching this after Olivia Newton- John’s passing. Brought tears to my eyes. Loved her so much. John Travolta got his celebrity status from the tv show Welcome Back Kotter. Grease and Saturday Night Fever came out close together. Y’all need to watch that next. You haven’t seen Travolta dance till you watch that movie. He won’t disappoint promise.

This was absolutely delightful! I saw this film when it came out when I was eight years old and I made my mother take me back to see it SIX more times! In fact, "You're the One that I Want" was the first single record I bought with my own money (allowance from mowing the lawn, lol). Olivia Newton-John was so important in my life, and over these many years remained one of the truly beautiful and bright spots in an otherwise rather lonely childhood. Her passing has been very hard, so what a gift this was to experience her and this film through your eyes--thank you so very much! 💕 (if you can enable gifts on your videos, I'd love to "buy" you the Grease soundtrack! ;)
