My grandfather was an airforce test pilot. The story goes that when this movie first came out they went to see it in the theater. He laughed every time they cut to a picture of the plane flying from the outside and he was the only one in the theater who laughed. It's because it's a jet and it's making a propeller noise lol.

Yes, I laughed at that too! My father was in the submarine busters in the Navy, and I have been around aircraft most of my life. That flight is a commercial airline and hearing the sounds of a propeller prop plane! 🤣🤣🤣

It's very subtle humor that 99% of people won't get unless they've FLOWN ON, or BEEN AROUND a multi-engine prop aircraft. Let's face it, there aren't that many of them around outside the military (I was Aust. Navy and flew of a P3 a few times). Apparently the sound was recorded from either a C-130 Hercules or a P3 Orion (Not sure which), as they were the only readily accesible 4 engine turboprop aircraft around.

The jive talk scene's biggest joke was having Barbara Billingsley be the one who spoke it. Her most well known role was being June Cleaver, the mom on Leave It to Beaver, who was essentially an idealized version of the typical housewife. So, having her be the only person around that could help translate was hilarious.

His quotes "and don't call me Shirley," and "let's move on people, nothing to see here," are now a well-known part of moviedom lexicon! In a way, it kinda is a serious disaster movie. Airplane! is almost a shot-for-shot remake of an old movie called Zero Hour! from a few decades prior, with basically the plot you see here but played straight. One of the subtler jokes in Airplane! is the constant droning of propeller engines, when the plane we see is clearly a jet. But the older movie had an older plane with the older engines, so they kept the sound. Quite the range of jokes in this piece!

As someone who has been alive long enough to remember, yes, there used to be a real problem with religious groups accosting people in airports. As I remember the Hari Krishnas were especially infamous for doing this. It's amazing how well this movie holds up despite how many of the jokes are references to pop culture that's mostly long forgotten now. I'd be willing to bet that at least half of the jokes went right over your heads, but there are so many jokes that even cut in half it's enough to seem nonstop. (Also, yes, people really did used to be able to smoke on planes.)
Here are a few examples of things you probably missed: The speech the doctor gave to Ted that got him to go back and land the plane was a parody of an old Ronald Regan movie. Regan played a Notre Dame football player named George Gipp in that movie, and got his nickname, the Gipper, from that role. That's why there was a college football fight song in the background. The bit with the woman wondering why her husband wanted a second cup of coffee but never did at home was directly from a well known coffee commercial at the time, and the actress was the same one in the commercial. The older woman who spoke Jive was played by the actress who had been June Cleaver, the mother in Leave it to Beaver. You did recognize Kareem, not many reactors do, but those of us old enough to remember that era of the NBA know that the criticism that the kid repeats from his father was exactly the sort of things his critics said about him when he was playing and we know exactly who he was talking about when he refers to Walton and Laimbeer. I guarantee you that line was exactly what he would have liked to say to his critics. There's a lot more, I'm sure there are many more examples in other comments.

Lots of social nods, the Tupperware party, Radar Range was a type of oven, kissing on the beach while the waves washed over them was a scene in "From Here to Eternity", "Gladiator Movies" were 60's made "Sword and Sandal" movies which were Italian made movies kind of set in ancient Rome starring oiled up body builders.

Even more context on the speech, the 1940 film Knute Rockne portrayed the supposed 1928 speech coach Rockne gave to his Notre Dame team at half time about the tragic death of the greatest player ever at Notre Dame George Gipp. The parts of the speech in Airplane are pretty close the Gipper speech with the exception of the name and the "it won't smell to good" line. I like to think that this gag was the entire reason for the backstory involving George Zipp. Also the fight song playing is of course the Notre Dame fight song.

A lot of older actors, particularly Peter Graves, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, and Leslie Nielsen, had been typecast in dramas, so this was a chance for them to cut loose. In fact, this movie actually revitalized all of their careers.
The older woman who spoke jive was Barbara Billingsley, who at that time was still considered the ultimate sitcom wife and mother.
The man who played Johnny (the odd air traffic control assistant) was Steven Stucker. He was one of the first public figures to announce that he had AIDS and was very active in reducing the stigma in the LGBTQIA community. That was a big deal to admit publicly back then, but it wasn't until Rock Hudson died that AIDS became an international news story.

This movie probably has more jokes per minute than any other. Most of them are very funny in their own right, but quite a few are even funnier due to cultural references that would be familiar to a 1980 audience. You might miss some of the subtleties of a number of jokes. For instance, when the woman thinks "Jim never has a second cup at home" that comes from a coffee commercial that I believe featured the same woman.
This movie is a spoof of a deadly serious movie with the same basic plot, called "Zero Hour." It's based on a book by Arthur Hailey, who also wrote "Airport" which became the grand daddy of all disaster movies. When this came out the majority were "serious" actors who had never appeared in comedy's before. The writers/producers wanted actors who would deliver their lines as if they were in a drama. It worked. Leslie Neilson started a whole new career thanks to this. BTW, the women who gets repeatedly slapped, in a earlier bit mentions her husband never asks for a second cup of coffoe at home, actually had done a series of commercials with that line. One of the few comedians in the movie, Jimmie Walker, who checks under the hood, was the star of "Good Times" a popular TV comedy. Leslie Neilson (the doctor) was a huge star back then as a serious actor and then he started appearing in these silly comedies and he was just gold! Unbelievable comic timing.
They kept trying to make comedies like this but the humor is usually crap. This movie stands out as the best of the genre.

Leslie Nielsen was from The Naked Gun and was the most “slap stick” comedy as you say and while the jokes seem simple, they so were not. Some jokes were very complex and you would think it wouldn’t be this timeless. Btw, Mayo Clinic is a real place where they would have the heart, the mayonnaise was a play on that and yes you could smoke on planes through most the 80s. Listen to the parking attendant start breaking out the box and argue about the whether she should get an abortion.
“Blazing Saddles” which you guys did was the Grandfather of Slapstick comedy.

Asia is my favorite person to watch a comedy with! Her laugh is contagious.

This was one of your best videos so far. Love how you edited the film and your reactions. That is not easy.
Airplane is comedy gold. A really funny, silly movie that everyone can enjoy.

I literally go into rooms at work at random times and say “I just want you tell you both, good luck, we’re all counting on you.”
