According to John Travolta, the two of them definitely held affection for one another, but were never romantically involved other than some friendly flirtation. He has described her as one of his best friends, and talked about their relationships as if they were friends until the day she died.

In this scene, they kept her back stage and no one saw her dressed like that til she walked on set, you can catch some of the actors reaction, they showed it up while the cast was eating and then she walks out during the start of filming, I don't know if they had to stop, but can you imagine seeing her walk out like that.

Literally the entire world wanted John and Olivia to become an actual couple, the chemistry was just magical, it's a big part of why Grease is such a classic, but talk about the right place at the wrong time for that, because they were both in relationships at the time and it just didn't happen, it evolved into a lifelong friendship, but man i even shed a couple tears thinking of John dealing with the loss of his Sandy, he adored that woman, and i will forever love this movie for bringing them together in any way, shape or form. I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction because you allow yourselves to enjoy things, this reaction needed to happen and Travis needs to finally watch Grease, based on this reaction i think he'll love it 🙂👍

Back in the 70's John Travolta played a character named Vinnie Barbarino in a sitcom called "Welcome Back Kotter". Never in the world did I ever expect him to become one of the biggest Hollywood stars in history. Travolta released an emotional tribute to Olivia Newton John after hearing about her passing away. The type of tribute that brought tears to my eyes when I read it. John Travolta starred in Grease (released in June 1978) and Saturday Night Fever (released in Dec 1977)....both released within 6 months of each other.

Grease was filmed in the summer of 1977 and released in June of 1978. Obviously the actors were much older than the parts that they played. Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was the oldest at 33. Travolta was 23, Olivia Newton-John turned 29 during filming. Lorenzo Lamas (the jock that Sandy goes with for a short while) at 19 and Eddie Deezen (Eugene) at 20 were the ones closest to high school age, LOL.

They were rumoured to have been seeing each other, but never would admit to it publically. John was said to have proposed to Olivia, but she supposedly said No because she was concerned about her image (she had been a country singer before Grease). He married a woman who bore a striking resemblance to Olivia. If anyone was still in any doubt, his public tribute should have put them to rest: He said..
My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John.

You can't put your arms around a memory. We had all these plans for the festival season starting back up here after covid. I don't know who to go with now.
I'm so glad the cancer clinic is there, they really do look after everyone, they let you do what you want to your room. You've got your own bathroom & stuff. When it becomes palliative stage pretty much all rules are out. You want pizza? You'll get it! You can have all the visitors. AWESOME REACTION! When this movie came out in 1978, it was a SENSATION and Olivia and John became the most famous people in the world. The movie and the soundtrack have broken all kinds of records and is a mainstay in pop culture. Every generation discovers this movie and falls in love with it. It makes both of them and the entire cast immortal. Olivia and John had amazing chemistry and mutual attraction but they were both in their own relationships and back then, you didn't leave your love to love another. Her catalog of music is epic as is his catalog of film, but they remained the best of friends always. When she died last August, he was devastated and has never gotten over it. He presented at the Oscars last night and the reference to her shook him. You could tell he had been crying. I met her once at a cocktail party and I got it. She could pierce the soul of anyone, not by her stardom or tlent, but by her kindness.

Although they kept it quiet they did date during Grease and for awhile after. He wanted her for the movie because he both knew she was the only choice for Sandy and he had a huge crush on her. Although they eventually broke up, they considered each other best friends until her death. They did a 2nd movie together, she helped him prepare for roles & even after her 1st marriage he often stayed at her Malibu ranch and was friends with her husband. Jeff Conway who played Kenchie had won a Tony playing Danny on Broadway. He always had regret that he didn’t get the role in the film. bigger regret her didn’t get Olivia. He often spoke of John telling them all she was with him. Jeff ended up marrying her sister, Rona Newton-John who worked as her assistant on Grease. My uncle is famous music producer / songwriter who was on set and in the recording studios for Grease helping out his friend Barry Gibb who wrote several songs including the title track Grease is the Word. My uncle also worked with Olivia often and they were close friends to the end. I loved her from a young age and through one of his charity galas she appeared at I was able to see her perform and get to know her and the dinner after about 13 years ago. I felt like it was 1978 again & “Sandy” was even more beautiful, kind, intelligent and warn than I could have hoped. She was everything we believed she was and so much more. She flew 17 hours from Australia at the last minute to surprise my uncle at the gala because he was getting an award for all of his charitable endeavours and she wanted to be the one to present it. He was shocked and thrilled and even though it nothing had been prepared he sat at the piano and they performed 5 songs they’d worked on together over the years. It was a magical night before that with superstars giving incredible performances, she took it too another level and every star there were as giddy as I was to meet her, talk to het. She had a glow you could feel and a sincerity that can’t be faked.

She had been on a rough journey, battling cancer three times, but she was a fighter..or as she called it..a thriver. You could pick any song in her vast catalog of music to react to and you would probably enjoy them all. I would recommend A Little More Love, Totally Hot, Soul Kiss, Toughen Up and Twist of Fate. John and Olivia became really good friends while working on Grease and they remained good friends until her death. It was John who insisted on Olivia being given the role of Sandy in Grease (and then she insisted on doing a screen test for the part) but they weren't a couple in real life, each had their other romantic partners off screen.

It's so funny for oldies like me seeing younger people finding our old faves for the first time. I see people finding, Elvis, Bee Gees, etc singers I knew from my youth. Good for you. :) It's such a fun film. And a great song. I'm guessing you haven't seen Saturday Night Fever either, or Staying Alive. :)

John Tavolata (Danny) and Jeff Conway (Kenickie) came to these roles from the stage show where they had actually played each other's parts. ... and ONJ is sewn into those pants. Love this movie. This was risky for all those little 11-yr old girls in 1978

Not sure if you know this bit of trivia but those pants were real 1950's pants and the movie was made in 1977/78 and because they were old the zip had had it. They were found in the wardrobe dept of Paramount or whatever studio it was. So Liv had to be *sewn* into the pants for the scenes and as things like this take time to make with director cuts etc., you can imagine how uncomfortable it was for her to go possibly a few days for these scenes to be put together without drinking or eating so she didn't have to relieve herself!

You guys are pretty cool! Thank you for doing this amazing tribute to Olivia. She was such a huge part of my childhood. Not only was her music amazing but I had a huge crush on her throughout my teen years. Hell, I still have a crush on her. Nearly every boy during my teen years had at least one poster of her on their wall. As Dei said, Olivia will always be "the one that I want". I grew up with her on my wall. Losing her is very near to losing a friend. RIP Olivia.
