Basic Math - Graphing with a Ti-83 or Ti-84 Calculator

- In this video I take the Ti-84 graphing calculator and show you the basics of how to graph equations. Specifically I cover how to:
store equations
adjust the window size
view the graph
trace or evaluate points.
This should give you everything you need to start graphing equations of your own. Note these steps also work for the Ti-83 graphing calculator. If you would like to see more of my math videos, please visit www.mysecretmathtutor.com
This calculator gives me anxiety
Must have some bad memories, sorry about that. :^D
Same
i have this calculator
That’s why I got a CE
Only anxiety?
Just ordered one with my birthday money. Trying to do equations on my TI-30Xa makes me want to jump off a cliff.
you too committed for me
@@agsantanaa6401 lol
"now we get the equation, looks great"
Me: wtf I have weird ass lines
That's not good. Maybe try and reset the calculators memory. You might have a few other things stored in there, getting in the way.
Required to have this in high school, got through college with a basic scientific calculator 🤷♂️
Cap
James it’s facts bro, you can pretty much get through the calculus series without this. There are lots of other graphing utilities on the computer. Desmos is a good one
@@Therealtrapanthem I use Desmos all the time, and it is faster than most Graphic Calculator's.
@nana cat No lol
In high school we were encouraged to only use a scientific calculator and weren't allowed a graphical calculator during exams. I'm now in college and this is still the case. (EE student)
Though if I really need it, I just use the desmos website for sine graphs and such, like the other commenter said.
my professor posted this online on canvas as a resource to help us better understand how to use this confusing mathematical gadget lol Extremely helpful, thank you so much
Pro tip: use the (-) below the 3 instead of the - to make negative numbers.
thank u for this i was getting syntax errors
Yes! I made this mistake a few times already, no wonder I wasn't able to follow along in class and get the proper graphs to appear. xD
I was so confused why I was getting errors lucky I happened to see this comment
Thank you man I was about to give up
Thank you!
You sir have just saved me oodles of frustration on my math exam. I am beyond thankful that it is easy to use.
To make an x/y table, after graphing, press 2nd and then graph. There’s a little button that says table above graph.
Thanks, this video helped a lot
Omg thanks so much
Mine says:
"ERR: INVALID DIM"
"1:Quit"
that is because you are pressing the minus button for -2. THat happened to me too. You need to press the button under the 3 and then press to and then it should work.
Had the same issue. Quick google search fixed it: If you are trying to graph on your TI83/84 and you get the INVALID DIM error, then this usually means your PLOT is turned on. ... A good rule of thumb is, anytime you are using the STATPLOT, be sure to turn OFF your PLOT when you are finished. That way you will avoid the INVALID DIM Error in the future
@@liamwelsh5565 It's still not working
@@liamwelsh5565 THANK YOU! I thought my calculator was messed up, I almost gave it away and everything! THANK YOU !!!
can someone help? why doesnt my graph have an x and y axis
I learned more in this one video than I have in the last 3 weeks of my $1500 math class 😑
Me at 2:00 am the day if my PSAT 👀
Literally me today
ME 💀
WHAT THR FUCK ITS 1:35 RN IM TAKING THR PSAT TMR
this is not funny to me but its so funny to me because i remember being there. I am just a lover of math and I had one I was not using so I gave it to my nephew who will be taking the psat this year. he is going to have to starting learning this today. im sure you did fine on the psat and that you will rock sats. best wishes.
Wow, this video was very helpful. I have never used one of these calculators before and it is a requirement for my Math class this semester. Naturally I looked to UA-cam for a video on how to use it and found yours. I feel much better that I know how to use it a bit. Thank you!
If people are having trouble with the ERR:DIM MISMATCH, it can be fixed by clearing all other y = and deselecting all plots (they will be in a black box and you can deselect it by pressing enter on it).
Caleb Tutton Thank you!
Omg thank you!
Love you bro thanks
Thank you so much Brodie
I'm back in college for the second time in my life. First time I was 18, I am now 35 😅 and in algebra 150. I didn't even pass algebra in high school... I think you just became my new best friend.
Thank you so much! I needed to learn how to graph parabolas for my PSAT tomorrow - you're guide helped so much!
This video helps A TON, I have STAAR test tomorrow and I just know how to use a graphing calculator, I have not use an graphing due to I am a online student and now I am completely clueless about how to use it. Thanks for the help!
Thank you so much! This was so helpful. I was having a really hard time with learning how to use this calculator.
I'm taking my junior year ACT in March and needed a refresher for it. Thank you!!
I’m in my 40s and I still use the same Ti-83 calculator I had since college!
Oh my gods, I actually know how to use my calculator now! Thank you math man!
This video was uploaded 7 years ago but it helped me A LOT OMG THANKS
This video explained this better that my Algebra 2 teacher did. Thanks
Thanks for this video, very useful and straight to the point.
I love how excited he sounds about graphing on a calculator.
I always get super excited when I talk about math. :^D
That was super helpful. Before I watched this video I couldn't figure out how it worked at all.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! adjusting my window was the exact issue I was having
Thanks for your short and helpful video. It helps a lot.
Just like how you did with tracing the X values at the end is there any way to go to a specific Y value?
Wow! Great video!
I really forgot how to use my school calculator so thank you for this video.
This was soo helpful it literally saved the day. Thank uu!!!
What settings did you use because mine will only do one at a time
Thank you,very clear and helpful
Thanks! Total lifesaver!
Very helpful. Thank you
great video i have a test tomorrow. Saved my life
Wow, I was struggling so much to figure out all the buttons on my new calculator and I didn't even want to touch it. This video legitimately helped me out so much, I can actually graph my equations now! Thank you so much.
However, how would you find the intersection of two separate equations?
Excellent question! Start by graphing them both in the Y= screen.
When they are both entered in, go to your graph screen.
You should be able to see where the two cross, but if not adjust your window size
Now press [2nd] [Trace] to bring up the calc menu for graphs. There you will find an option to calculate the intersection.
For this you'll select a point to the left, and right of the intersection, as well as make a "guess" where they cross. The calculator will do the rest. :^D
@@MySecretMathTutor Thank you so much!
Thanks man, now im all prepared for the SAT
Watching this the week before my first week of college... My major has nothing to do with math but I have to get through those classes and I'm terrified
cool feature if you double press with the cursor while in trace mode you can move to that location
Awesome Video!
I’m using Kahn academy, and went from solving quadratic systems myself, to needing a calculator, but with no instruction on how to use a graphing calculator lol
Thanks
Thank you so much!!!! Saved my sanity !!
Excelente, compre una en estados unidos por nostalgia...era lo que necesitaba.
ok so um my arrow down when adjusting frame size gives me an error message. Also when typing in the x carrot three how do I get out of the exponent. It puts the 2x as part of the exponent
Are there any online calculators that can do the same functions as a Ti-83? I don't have a calculator currently so I need to use on online and I don't know which one to use.
Thank you! This video is very helpful.
Thank you, I have the PSAT tomorrow so this is much appreciated
Best of luck! :^D
@@MySecretMathTutor thank you! I think I did alright but I dont know lol
See you’re smart to look up how to do this because I didn’t lmfao and I wasted time trying to figure out how to do it b it ended up just wasting time because I couldn’t figure out how to 😅
This was so helpful!!!
Ahhh thank you so muchhh my auntie gave me her old calculator and I didn’t know how to use it and I needed to know for my midterm😭
Literally the best-narrated tutorial I have ever seen
so glad this video exists i just started high school i had no clue to use this lol
So when I go to input the - 2 X it is still in the powers postion. How do I input it as seen on the screen? I have a TI-84 just bought 2 days ago. Help please
If you see the syntax error, use (-) button which is under the 3 button for negative values
I appreciate that thank you so much
omg they should make a new calculator with native language support
Thank you!! But I have problem with graph. I wrote a equation and then pressed graph but doesn’t work! So I don’t understand what’s the problem?
Thank you, there are some pretty good tips.
this is very helpful remind me how to use it
Thank you!
Thank you! You are awesome
You are great!!!! Saved my life :))
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Very useful and fast. No time wasted. Great video!
Please I need a really quick answer, can the TI-82 stats draw graphs just like what he showed in this video?
Yes, the Ti-82 has a very similar graphing set up so you should have no issues.
To double check this I fired up my Ti-82 and graphed the equations in the video with no issue.
Keep up the good work! :^D
@@MySecretMathTutor Not only did you respond to a comment on a 4-year old video, but even checked if the TI-82 works. That deserves high respect. I did end up buying the 82 and it works great! Thanks, my man
@BLUE The menu system on an 86 feels a bit different, but all of the important functions are still there. The menu system will be similar to a Ti-85 as well.
Here is a video where I use it...

what if i want to find the value of x with the value of y?
Thank you so much!!!
How do I enter brackets into the calculator? The equation i am confused with is y=-|x-1|+ 1
Heyy when i click graph its showing the equaition in a graphic format but showing the x and y axis what shoul i do please help!!!!
Mine will not do both at the same time it will only do 1 but it doesn’t say error
Thank you!! I am very very slow and lost w/ math class and this really is helpful.
Oml ty. I failed my precalc final bc I couldn’t use the calculator right but I think I can pass the retake now 😊
Try to do college algebra with a ti30x like I did with a ti30 and do graphs by hand I had a prof that said use ti 30
THANK YOU
thank ya big dawg
Bless the guy who invented this calculator
On the very first thing I had to hit the > key to get the -2 away from the ^3. Is there a reason why mine is different?
Sounds like your mode is set to "math print." This is an option that is common with the newer line of Ti-84 calculators.
I like to use "classic." To switch between the two press [MODE]. One of the first few options will have either math print, or classic highlighted. Select one and the press [Enter].
Hopefully that helps out. :^D
@@MySecretMathTutor thank youuuuu!!!
This was SUPER helpful, thank you!
I don't know why people disliked but, this shit is super usefull
😁
4:17, thank you very much!
How can we find this symbols (α, β ,ϒ) in TI 84 calculater ?
Yup can u make a video about this ?
thank you so much!!!!
What should I do if the second point doesn’t graph? I have it up to the 4:00 min mark but when I hit graph, only the first point is on the graph. Is there something wrong in my settings? I also made sure that my equal sign was selected, yet it still doesn’t graph the second equation. When I go back to y= it doesn’t show the = being highlighted black anymore
Reset it, it worked for me. Click 2nd, +, go down to Reset, enter, enter again at ALL RAM, go down to 2. RESET, enter
@@chuchu6891 this was 3 years ago man 😭 i dont take math classes anymore. Thanks anyways :,)
@@BiscuitDrawsYT I was surprised that you answered, I thought u was long gone 😂
thank you
I did exactly what the video said but the graph looks different on mine then it is on his. I double checked it and it’s the exact same equation so I’m not sure what’s going on. 😭
Thank you good sir
I was wondering what happened with my TI-84 Plus CE's graph and why it only showed the +,+ section of it, haha.
thanks dude ;)
Thanks man
how do i put |x-3|+2 in the graphing calculator😭😩
I need a TI84 but I have a TI83 plus does anyone know if there's a difference?
The Ti-84 has more ram so essentially its quicker at doing tasks. Other than that there is really no difference.
@@dadcactus3399 Thank you! I needed an answer
The TI-84 is an updated model of the TI-83; not much of a difference.
The Ti-84 Plus offers Mathprint the 83 isn't compatible with Mathprint
@@dadcactus3399 TI 83 has 150k ram memory TI 84 has 480 k ram for more info ask google
Really helpful thank you!
Magyar?
I'm confused. I have a TI-83 Plus and when I graph the second equation after setting my window range to 6 as you did, it actually shows up immediately without having to enlarge the window again. My equation looks the exact same as yours, but the graph looks completely different. EDIT: Wait a minute, I just cleared it from the second Y and put it in the first one and now it looks correct. WTF is happening? Now I just redid it the exact same way as the first time, with the first equation and then the second one exactly as you have it and now it appears correctly. I have no idea why it looked weird the first time. It was coming down from the upper left quadrant towards 1 on the y-axis and not moving up to the right from 20 on the x-axis. Not sure what happened, but I hope it doesn't happen again.
What camera do you use to make this video? Very clean video
This was an iPad. But I don't remember which version.
thankk you
I've had my calculator for years but I never learned to use the graphing function even though it's the hardest and most tedious part of math.
I dont know why but whenever I go to my y= screen it’s showing weird looking x s and plot one through three anyone help?
i now have a toy to play with next time i’m stuck with this calculator
I changed the window parameters, to see how it worked, and now when I try to graph it says I need to edit the window range... edit to what?? I've put random numbers
Double check to see that the min is less than the max on the window.
Another thing to check is if you have used the negative sign or the minus sign. In my experience, both of these are common problems when setting the window size. :^D
MySecretMathTutor
Oh yes that was it. Thank you!
How come my root 3 goes to the power while yours just shows the root sign then the 3?
Lizett Diaz mine did the same thing???
How to check value for y=0?
One method would be to guess and check. In both equations he's used, we know that when x=0, y=0. Or, better yet, manually, anyway, plug in "0" for y into your equation and then solve for x.
I wish you were my teacher ☺
Thanks! :^D
