India's First Female Pro Skater: Atita Verghese | SKATE TALES
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 вер 2024
- Atita Verghese is India’s foremost female skater. She discovered skateboard culture through the country’s Holystoked crew who built India’s first DIY skatepark in Bangalore.
As soon as she set foot on a board, her life changed forever- and she has never looked back.
In 2014, Atita founded Girl Skate India, an NGO which encourages young women to follow her path into the great big world of skateboarding for themselves.
Atita is an inspiration to women worldwide- but especially in India, a nation of a billion souls where skating is still in its infancy.
Having learned how to mix concrete and shape transitions with the Holystoked collective, she has worked on the majority of skatepark builds throughout her home country to this day.
Along the way, skateboarding has seen her feature in many adverts, a TED talk, landed her roles in movies and even a cameo appearance in the Netflix show Skater Girl.
In a society where opportunities for girls to be free of social constraints and have fun are thin on the ground, Atita does more than just provide boards, pads or lessons- she has created a one-woman movement. That has to be something worth checking out.

Madars is such a cool guy. Love this series
THIS WAS THE MOST WHOLESOME THING EVER- So stoked for these people and the ladies making it happen!! Skateboarding is FOREVER 🤩
The girl who said her parents supported her at first and then her village had a celebration in her name after she won a gold medal, wow, what a powerful testimony! The love started flowing out eventually, and she/all of them deserve it!❤❤
aw i cried through this entire video. Big love to all these people
I know not many people will read this, but I lived in Bangalore (that's what it was called then) in 2000s and built a little skatepark on my roof. I used to roll around at the movie theatre near the Cauvery. I still have some old handicam footage somewhere. I might have been one of the first first skaters in India. But cool to see that there's an actual scene there now. Much love!
find it if you can!!!!! xD
Yesh that would be excellent content.
in a country of billion people, sure there are kids and youngs adults who have skated for years, before internet and youtube
The end of this was the best moment I’ve seen in SKATE Tales
This is brilliant, she’s doing so much . That’s crazy and amazing the girls that ran away from home to Skate. It’s sad that people see it as a male only sport.
Epic episode as usual. This series really shows the global phenomenon that is skateboarding. Thank you Red Bull and Madars! Big Up to all the sisters in India who have the courage to push the boundaries and be unique ❤
I agree. I think some of us forget how women are treated in other countries. How can something as silly as skateboarding be wrong.
You could really feel the passion and stoke in this video. Its pretty wild to see and remember the same challenges of acceptance from family and the public that i experienced skating in the late 80s. Hope they all continue pushing together.
madars just fits into every culture he comes across, not just with his amazing skating but also because of his open minded personality.
As a father of a daughter, she’s four years old and she’s very into skating like her father. This is very moving.
I hope that this can spread and thrive in India and take on its own distinct Indian identity that way the cultural police don’t ban skateboarders
How active is cultural policing?
@@psydwayze idk but I know that other ngos that go over there tell the people working for them to scrub their social media of any religious of political content otherwise they don’t get visas
Imagine how many great skaters could start coming out of India in the coming years. If it’s just catching on, we could see a boom of talent on the world stage. Exciting times for skating.
This is so heartwarming, Atita you are a beautiful person and what you are doing for those young girls is amazing and inspiring and Madars you are one of my favorites of all tme! you are not just a great skater but a kind a gentle soul who might have one of the best skate shows ever. Thanks!
She is adorable
Damn these kids are reminding me of myself in the 90’a out in the woods of MAINE… we had just gotten into the skate culture and had to travel and we had kids making ZINES and it definitely brought me back!
Growing up in California, skating just seems like a typical way of life. Watching this makes me think of all the untapped potential around the world
Awesome, Skateboarding brings so much joy to the world. I stopped 8yrs ago and it was the worse thing I ever did, been through hard depression and addiction because of it.Finally going back at 39yrs old
This series keeps getting better and I learn so much
Love this! Saying hello from Mysore! Thanks for all you do Madars!
Skateboarding really means the world to a lot out there, people truly are amazing…. Skateboarding goes above and beyond… these girls are incredible
What an amazing story! This shows how skateboarding changing lives and social structures!
This was so wholesome, keep skating ladies and change narratives
What narratives? Please elaborate? I'm curious...🤔
Clicked on this suggested vid while waiting w/o realizing how heavy a topic. My eyes are leaking - this was well done. Big ups to all those girls!
This series somehow just keeps getting better and better. Love this. I skated in a bunch of different Indian cities back in 2007 and it felt like no one had ever seen a skateboard before at that time. So great how that is now changing.
I'm 50 years old, skating since 1984 and the beauty of skateboarding imho is, that there is a place for everybody in it. Even for Buddy, the three legged dog
Atita rocks
Love Madars for doing these series, highlighting skateboarding where places you would never think actually happen, big up to you bro & all the skateboarding communities out there 🤙
Yo Atita you are doing the most darling. You're positively impacting so many peoples lives, taking the gift that is skateboarding and making it widespread and accessible to more people and thats truly remarkable. I wish you and girl skate india nothing but the best

So inspiring! So much determination, LOVE, passion, FUN all round and making the best out of all the situations! We take for granted how good we have things in the West. Can't wait to get back into Skating!! I started back in 2019 and stopped, wish I hadn't and kept going. Never give up on anything you're passionate about! I hope this message helps and inspires someone to keep going! In whatever that is 🙌💕

This is awesome!
I so wish for the I dian skater girls to keep on spreading the stoke challenging traditional role models. It isnt all that easy in a country like India. Stay strong and keep shredding 😀
You are so inspiring atita
Love you ❤️❤️❤️
as a male skateboarder, im super intimidated by these new female skaters. they fucking rip.
All I have to say is "Great Story"!
I think some of us forget how women are treated in other countries. How can something as silly as skateboarding be wrong.
How can a town look down on you for being a GIRL skater. They needed to see her succeed to be reminded that women are not to be looked down upon or Opressed.
As a female skateboarder in California, i cannot relate to much of that. Im so lucky to live in a more progressed state.
These girls have been more brave than most of us ever have been. Because it is unbelievably scary to go against your familys beliefs. To go againt an entire town or country.
These girls are beautiuful, skating is beautiful and thanks red bull for putting this out into the world and showing everyone that we are all people and no one should be oppressed.
This on a whole different level of cool.
Madars is that dude!!! Skateboarding has come such a long way its insane 🍻
Right on
