For episode four of Skate Tales, Madars hightails it to Ethiopia to meet the skate crew building a scene from scratch in one of the world’s oldest countries.
The story of Ethiopia Skate is as real as it gets: from a parking lot in Addis Ababa, Henok Yetbarek, Michael Baheru, Ruel Desta, Babure ‘Babu G’ Teferi, Yeabkal Abraham and Yared Gobezie started a skate movement which would snowball with the help of two American skaters, JT Rhoades and Sean Stromsoe.
Within 3 years they would link up with Make Life Skate Life to build Ethiopia’s first free skatepark in the capital, and a year later they would double down on their success by building a second in Awassa.
Nowadays Ethiopia Skate has 150 skaters enlisted from around the country, and has registered as a non- profit in the USA meaning they can accept tax- deductible donations to keep their skatehouse open, build more terrain and, as Sean tells Madars ‘create more opportunity through skateboarding’.
Madars came by to build and inspire, listen and learn in a beautiful one from the Skate Tales storybook.

They should make a UA-cam channel. “Ethiopia Skate Crew” someone hook em up with some gear.
Stephen Carmickle they gave them a GoPro
Hells yeah!
When we donate to a big aid company like unicef they dont do this and have much video evidence, they might give them food but they won't build them something that helps them have fun like a skatepark food is perishable memories from a skatepark will last forever, why don't you start a aid company called Red bull aid or something @ red bull, you would make waaay more than unicef and you could build these parks all over the world with the communities and stuff
Why don't they just find a way to buy it like we have to?
kids in Africa could've eaten that gear
As the years go by I feel more and more lucky to be an Ethiopian
Same
Miso Horni where in ethiopia are you from?
This is what life is all about. Sharing laughs, havin fun, and being with good people.
Word
yup ;)
mila?
BUT WHAT happens when these kids are hurt skating with what insurance ?
Ppp
this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever watched in my life
"Back home I'd be worrying about myself, but here I'm apart of something"
That hit deep
This is skateboarding. Bring people together regardless of age, ethnicity, and background. Thanks red bull for shining a light on this awesome new community.
but it takes a white mans initiative to actually make it happen. just sayin
totally :)
amen bro
@@chadfren lmao because skateboarding is a western invention. has nothing to do with "a white mans initiative"
@@chadfren wut
this is good shit. in a time when mainstream skating feels soulless as hell this show is highlighting how much spirit is still at the root of the thing. fuckn beautiful
⚡️ ⚡️ ⚡️
This is SO GoOD.They fully need it,as we did in the beginning actually WAY more. Kick em down... o-o
This series is just top notch. I haven't ever skated but always enjoyed watching skateboarding, and these episodes are just superb.
Skate!! What’s stopping ya?
@@Sektor826 I don't actually just have interest towards it. I do enjoy watching it. But I'm a winter sport guy, love freeskiing
Go skate!!!
There are no limits
@@Sektor826 yeaaaa!
Couldn't have picked a better host for this series! Love Madars!
I really hope one of those kids go pro and by the way I’m loving this series
If they can figure out a way to market themselves to the world, they can grow and get to that level
This is so dope I really love the rising skate scene in Ethiopia, I'm from Kenya and we skate here too. Maybe one day you guys can pass by 🇰🇪
Just did!
Proud Ethiopian here
It’s so cool like when you see those guys skate, its the same as in the western world. Theres this connection in skating that is becoming more magical because its brining people together. No matter your background.
I'm Ethiopian and I'm thankful for you guys for making such a wonderful job like introducing skeatboarding to Ethiopia
And i can see this in being a big campany thank you your blessed❤️
Man I kinda want to go there now. The people seem soo nice and the community is great.
We are very kind you should come you will love it 🥰
same dude, such a rich history in Ethiopia and some amazing culture and by the looks of it people too. I'm sold :)
so good!
I went last year and it was AMAZING
I'd really urge you to go to Addis Ababa. Great city and rapidly developing at the moment. IMO, Ethiopia has the brightest future in Africa, especially once the dam is filled and fully operational.
I just cried seeing all this beautiful attitude very well done ❤ warming up my heart Big Up congrats Red Bull skateboard from Brazil 🇧🇷 and Hong Kong 🇭🇰
Already wanted to go to Ethiopia🇪🇹 its so beautiful , hopefully I can go one day 😇 love from Kenya 🇰🇪
Love you to Kenya brothers and sisters from Ethiopia come to Ethiopia we love Kenyan
When I make it I'm gonna send a thousand new skate boards to their company. It is a beautiful thing
@JCT Nah nah nah. Give them the knowledge and skills to build as many skate presses as they want. That's some real teach a man to fish shit
JCT takes years for companies to get to where they are and start making boards and most of the time companies don’t even press their boards themselves. your acting like a press is the only thing they need to start making boards but it’s never that simple. and plus you really think poor people can afford to do that?
Madars is the perfect dude for this, he seems so genuinely interested in hearing people's stories and sharing a passion for skating. Really top notch series and I wish more skaters and non-skaters would watch it.
These kids are going to look back and remember these times for the rest of their lives. What a truely amazing gift.
Can we just give props to the team that put this together! so authentic
I am Ethiopian and appreciate my brothers for showing these people our culture and welcoming nature. This video made me smile.
skateboarding is freedom
20:43 lets not ignore the savage hand stand into oncoming traffic hahaha sick
That spongy injera bread is the best. One of my favorite foods. Staple of Ethiopia
I honestly wish this was over an hour long. I loved every second of this. More more more please :) great job to all those involved. Really want to go to Ethiopia now, the people there seem awesome.
This makes me happy as an Ethiopian 🇪🇹born in California 🇺🇸
This is my favourite series on youtube right now, cant believe its not getting more views.

7:02 I don't what they actually say, but after the kid mall grabbed I heard them singing "mall grab, mada mada..." in the background :D

Saw a video on you guys going to Madagascar and teaching the kids to skate can’t wait to see what these kids are like
I live there and skates sometimes in the capital (Antananarivo). There is a crazy crew in Madagascar and the level is fucking good (given the infrastructures, and the lack of material and the price too expensive, it just blows my mind how good the level is). Please look out for Ariar Skateboarding (facebook and youtube) and show you support :)
What a fine production , i have watched the video glued to my monitor, i love your videos so much ! Love from Romania

This is the most worthwhile skateboarding effort towards building a sustainable community I have seen in decades. Keep up the great work! How can someone donate money, boards, shoes gear etc?
Hi I feel happy to see the beautiful start to skateboardings future in Ethiopia I am proud of you ok
The Dogtown analogy was right on point. Relevant and informative. Great film thanks.

Their park actually looks pretty fun
Awesome ep. Beautiful positive community vibes, love it.
So nice of you to give them all those decks. Great video. Share the love.
Madars! Congratulations on two awesome video parts in one day, but I think this is the one that really shines. There's some heavy tricks in this video too! Amazing vibes. so stoked to skate.
