How to do Uchi Mata

  • How to do Uchi Mata. In this video I am showing how to do one of the most popular throws in judo - Uchi Mata, Inner Thigh Throw. Although an Ashi Waza technique, I like to create a large amount of hip contact in order to execute this throw powerfully, using the leg as a guide rather than the core of the throw. There are a large number of variations of this throw, and with time we will cover them too. Be sure to comment, like and share the video! Enjoy!

    Great to be shown such a simple yet in-depth way of doing the traditional inner thigh version of this throw; thank you! I was first taught the spinning uchi mata, a rotating variant that hooks the other leg, and I was also already familiar with outer thigh uchi mata.

    Excellent point about the utility and value of the lapel grip!
    It allows tori to attack with ‘conventional’ uchimata and/or transition to uchimata sukashi, and a great combination to ko uchi gari (or, for the bold of spirit, yama arashi).
    Outstanding demonstration of standard uchimata with excellent value for combining uchimata and other waza

    Learned many different technics but in contest the opponents mostly do the Uchi Mata.I had no good defens against it and once the leg is between my legs,i fly.I was about 1.90 cm but no much kilogram.Now im older im gaining weight so i think uchi mata dont work anymore for opponents so easy.But I left the Judo sport long ago but I shall never forget it.

    Hi Sampson, thank you for your brilliant videos, they are a huge help! I was wondering, I'm a musician and it's my career etc. I do judo twice a week and have been for about 2 months. I tape my fingers up and haven't had any finger trouble yet, is there anything else you can suggest for protecting fingers? Have you had much finger trouble during your time as a judoka?

    • @SampsonJudo
      @SampsonJudo  7 років тому +5

      Hi Joe,
      I haven't had too much finger trouble, a broken finger every so often but nothing that regular. Finger tape is the best thing as it offers support whilst still giving flexibility to train. I would also suggest researching effective finger taping techniques to make sure you are making the most out of your tape. The only other way to protect against finger damage would be to avoid grip fighting as much as you can. I am aware that grip fighting is a big part of modern judo however be selective when you go hard on the grip fighting. There is no need to go crazy every session, this way you can protect your hands as much as possible. I have also personally developed a style that generally avoids grip fighting. It may be a big thing in modern judo, but I personally do not rely on it. If there is interest, I may record a short video on this. My key bit of advise would be to listen to your body. If your fingers and hands are hurting, give them time to heal to protect your career.

    • @joeboonmusic4004
      @joeboonmusic4004 7 років тому

      Hi Sampson,
      Wow, thank you so much for the in-depth answer, I really really appreciate it! That makes a lot of sense, a lot of the classes I go to are early morning technical classes that end with light randori so i'm not in too much danger of getting into dangerous situations. If you ever did do a video on your style of avoiding grip fighting, that would be perfect!
      Once again, thank you so much for taking the time, I know you must be busy!
      All the very best!

      Mirko Paragano yes, it can work. It is harder to do against a taller opponent. If there is a significant height difference then you might want to consider a throw such as tai otoshi or a low seoi nage.

    Love your videos but I'm 6ft 6. Coming under 90% of opponents this way is impossible due to the size difference. Particularly with O100kg shorties. Shame most BJA clubs teach it as a leg sweep with zero hip contact. But the tsurite for me has to be like Anton Geesink and modern competition with the elbow as high as possible. It opens up more entries but I still much prefer to stay on my feet than give in to just to rolling everywhere like modern judo.
    I hope that one day you might produce a series on misnomers, modern judo versus classical as well as high level training. I know there's a lot of politics in judo just in general but life is too short and going around on reddit I know there are plenty who want a more open debate.

    Hi there. I'm 6ft6 and a common comment I get is to make uchi mata one of my main throws but it worries me for a number of reasons.
    - the common practice of diving and potentially landing on uke
    - how to perform it on much shorter, very heavy opponents
    - getting a shido in competition for committing to the throw
    - seriously landing on my own head as this is a story I've heard from others
    I'm strong, muscular, athletic and lean for my size hovering at just under 100kg and currently gaining more weight in the gym. Any help would be greatly appreciated as you mention in the video about doing a part 2.

    I've never understood why they call the traditional japanese version uchimata. The fundamental mechanics it uses are the same as ogoshi, meaning that you use your hips to throw the opponent. If uchimata is supposed to mean inner thigh sweep, then why not perform a inner thigh sweep? To me, there are better variations out there that illustrate the principle then the traditional japanese version, which really should be a hip technique (koshi kategori) and not classified as a sweep technique.
