18k miles on my 2017 T120, and had FOUR failures with the gearbox. When the car in front of you slams their breaks on the freeway is a really bad time to realize your bike won’t downshift... Triumph didn’t take responsibility for the first few repairs, but they finally covered the last one since it happened so many times. Thanks for all your videos! Been watching for years now and the information is invaluable. You rock!
I brought one of the first 1050 Tigers in the US, 3 years later and 47,000 miles the engine started to run on two cylinders. I took it to the Triumph dealership and they took a look. We use winter blend gas where I live this was something Triumph hadn't realized and it had caused catastrophic damage to the engine. I didn't complain to Triumph about it but I wanted the bike rebuilt, it was going to be very expensive but I loved the bike. The dealership took it upon themselves and talked to corporate and they sent someone to look at the damage. long story short.....they rebuilt the engine for free, by the time they had finished it would have been cheaper to have given me a new bike but because they new I loved that bike they did it. I can't think of any other manufacture that would have gone to such lengths to make things right for a customer.
catastrophic damage to the engine. .. can you go into a little more detail please, just how extensive is the damage, are you talking about .. pistons, heads, valves, even crankshaft damage? thank you
It is great that Triumph is being smart and has decided to contact you who has already won the trust of die hard triumph enthusiasts. You are our champion Stuart! And I agree, "brass is class"!
Well done Stuart, I really hope that Triumph find a reliable engineering solution for loyal Triumph customers and its at Triumph's cost!.....too late for me as I paid for the repair (Triumph refused to acknowledge responsibility) and it will take some real back tracking to convince me that Triumph care about the customer vs. negative publicity. Would I buy another?....well, prior to the gearbox issue I had saved the cash for a new Speed Twin but honestly balancing price against customer service at the local dealer and Triumph's reluctance to acknowledge faults - I will probably continue buying Japanese. Loving the brass though Stuart....great stuff!

Better yet try forums etc for some kind of group action. Triumph can't "refuse to acknowledge responsibility". Thank you as always for fighting the good fight Stuart. Unfortunately my 2016 T120 is currently sat on my drive stuck in fourth gear after it's third gear selector failure so any news from Triumph may be a little too late for me.
Contact customer services to make a formal complaint and point out this is a recognised and life-threatening fault and so reportable to DVLA. After mine went for the second time, that's what I did and Triumph were very helpful, to say the least.

I wish Motone come up with some custom brass parts for the Interceptor as well. May I request you to do a video on the universal brass parts that Motone produces which can be fitted on the Interceptor as well. The video on the little brass Capstan was superb. Can u do some more...
Great news about the t120 gearbox. I don't have a problem at the moment, but it is nice to know that Triumph are showing a interest - in case I do have a issue in future.
My Bobber Black had some clutch problems just outside warranty, but Triumph were superb. They replaced the entire clutch assembly from cable to plates for free and even leant me a T100 whilst they sorted it. Really impressed by them. Also, your stable of bikes is looking great, Stu. I bet you can’t wait to feel comfortable riding the 1200s again! 👍
I have an early 17 T100. I'm not sure what the gear box issues you're referring to are exactly. Though, I have busted my shifter twice with minor bumps, shattering this thin metal clip on the inside. I'm really interested in knowing more info. I doubt there'll be better replacements for my bike but I'm interested in any word from Triumph.
Great video Stuart. Don’t forget the never seize, when using stainless bolt in alloy. Aluminium and stainless steel love each other so much they may not want to seperate later.
Just putting this information out there. I have a 2019 Street Twin that I purchased new last month and now have about 1000 miles on it. The gear box failed over the weekend. It's stuck in 1st gear. The dealer came by yesterday and picked it up for repair so I'll see how it goes....
@@PercyJackson93 No problems after the fix with close to 8,000 miles on the bike now. Immediately prior to the failure, the shifting felt a little off. I guess you could call it stiff. Hope this helps.
I look forward to any developments on the gear selector problems with Triumph, especially as I now have a vested interest. My Bonneville arrives in 10 days time. I’ve also purchased my first Motone parts, some luggage bobbins. The big question is how many of your videos should I watch? My shelves are now creaking under the weight of motorcycle pampering products (suggested by you) and my credit card trembles with fear whenever I watch another one. You said you were a busy man but may I suggest an extra item to add to your workload? A review of a Beeline GPS display. I have just bought one and it’s a cracking bit of kit. There are many reasons I like it but the main two are these. Firstly it’s very small. The device itself is 48 mm diameter and 15 mm thick. Secondly it has a very simple display. It tells you which direction to go, how long until the next turn, the direction of the next turn and simple junction information. More information is available with button presses on the gizmo itself. The simple display means you concentrate on riding and enjoying the scenery, not on the moving map that is so often used as the user interface. The Beeline is actually more like using aviation navigation guidance. Thanks for your videos and the work you do to publish them.

Thanks for the information. It seems like Triumph has trouble with the engineering and design of parts behind the clutch cover. My Sprint GT had the problem with the clutch dragging when hot that was common to these bikes. The proposed cause was that the plates weren't getting enough oil. Still, I loved that bike and planned on getting a Tiger 900. Now that I've learned about other triumphs with shifting issues and Triumph's handling of these issues I've reluctantly decided to go the the BMW F900XR. It's a pity as I really love that triple engine.
I have a very low mileage 2017 reg T120 , so far no gearbox . I mentioned this some weeks ago to the dealership principle but so far no response, not even an acknowledgement of receiving my email!

I’m still old school on my Bonnie. Carbs for me !!! I love the brass carb tops. Howe, I noticed they wouldn’t actually fit on real carbs. Do Motone make those covers with the internal adaptation to fit on the diaphragm spring are you aware ??
Does this defect also concern the Bobber black? I was about to purchase one but I might hold off until triumph have responded if it does concern the bobber black
@@stuartfillingham that's my worry that if they share the same gearbox that it would share the same fault! Do you know if its the same part that fails in each of the cases? Looking forward to hearing triumphs response!!
Customer Care! Maybe you remember that I switched from the T120 to the SpeedTwin last year. After roundabout 1.500 km the front brakes started to get noisy. The garage tried to fix it after Triumph told them, that quirky brakes are no guarantee issue. The fix didn‘t work and I make a complaint about that, what was absolutley ignored by Triumph. After threatening them to charge them officially, I was told that an engineer of Triumph would come to examine the problem. That was September last year. I‘m still waiting about that. In the mean time we made a guided bike tour through the Alps (from 18 bikes mine was the only one with quirky front brakes) Anyway - we decided to upgrade from the Street and SpeedTwin to more comfortable travelling bikes, because we want to make more of those kind of touring in future years. I wrote them a letter and told them that I don‘t want to buy products of a brand which doesn‘t care about their customers. If they handed such a little problem in that way, I asked them what I could expect in case of a big problem. So I didn‘t buy two Tigers and switched to two GS. Is BMW the better brand? I don‘t know ... but compared to Triumph ist could only get better ... Too bad ...
Good news indeed, well done. Not sure if I think it clever but unorthodox on Triumphs part as a method of dispensing customer care or not. Anyhow, progress is progress and thanks again 👍
Don't go easy on Triumph until fully satisfied that they have addressed the problem to your satisfaction. These firms are very good at kicking problems down the road for as long as possible to avoid warranty claims. If the problem is a design flaw than supplying replacements parts that have not been redesigned will mean continued failures and no solution. Demand detailed plans that secure a long term fix. Triumph have not got a good track record on this subject going back to the early Hinckley bikes so don't be fobbed off.
Final chapter of Triumph as a UK manufacturer happens next week (8/9/20), auctioneers hammer is coming down on all their UK based tools and machinery. A bad ending after such a promising run, cheaper bikes for everyone now?
Hi all. Where can I read about the gear box issue? I have a 2018 T100 and find the shifting very clunky, especially in 1st & 2nd gear. Is this related to the issue being highlighted here?
Awesome news Stuart with Triumph opening up about the gearbox issues. I still haven't seen motone release for sale the brass clutch cable holder bracket that attaches to the side cover yet, do you know if this is going to be release for the T120?
Thanks again for a great video Stuart. I have mounted some brass from Motone to my RE650 interceptor - tail light and indicator lights, but this requires some manual fitting - but looks great - or will when I am finished 😜. I would love if Motone made some more items for RE.
That sounds fabulous 👍, I’m looking forward to see what comes out of it. The taillight made for Triumph are really great looking - but I assume they are not compatible for RE.
I did my first service in the biggest triumph dealer in Sweden ”MC konsult”. I ask the service boss If he knew if any Triumph Bonneville 2017-2020 had gearbox problems. They answer was no.
Please forgive my off topic query. Since I started riding (again) recently I follow your channel religiously, I learn so much. I currently ride a Chinese made UM Renegade Commando 125 cruiser on L plates. It's brilliant and I'm going all over the country on it, enjoying myself immensely, partly thanks to a confidence boost rgds 125s on one of your previous videos. I plan to take my test next year and move up.If successful I will be in the market for a cruiser and was considering maybe a Triumph or an Indian Scout. However there are big hints Royal Enfield will be bringing out a cruiser based on the KX Concept they showed last year? I'm sure you've seen the clip of it being ridden out in India. I was wondering if you have any news on this and if you plan to do a piece on it. If the factory produced bike is near enough to the prototype this may well jump into my spot for first choice. I would be interested in your thoughts, if you have any at this time. As always looking forwards to your superb forthcoming vlogs. Thank you👍 Geoff

Good news from Triumph. Being an optimist, I assume it's genuine. If it achieves the right result it will restore my faith in the brand. The replacement of the personnel suggests that maybe it was a case of 'one bad apple' . 🤞🤞. PS my interest is purely academic as I own a Norton 961 which has been off the road all summer with an elusive fault but that"s another story😂😂
The quality of Motone's brass items is superb,I've put several bits on my T100, but personally I don't care for that design. That clutch cable holding bracket, though -- is that a production item or a prototype? I didn't see that last time I checked their website.

Triumph 👎. Sorry, since way back to 1969, memories of my mate's 500 Tiger .. Triumph and the other Brit Bikes of the Era have never quite 'got it right'. Having to get one's hands and finger nails all gunged up on Saturday in order to enjoy a trouble-free Sunday Breakfast Run .. Naah. Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration but for such beautiful looking and sounding bikes, the Engineering has stumbled. RE has picked up the Ball and hopefully they'll score big time. Japanese since the early 70's and still so. Switch on .. Start .. Go .. and get Home. Like Clockwork. Those Brass Bits are WOW! Great Retro Stuff 👍.
How much is accessibility compromised by “stubby hands” and how much by the tank’s cheap looking pinch-weld? Hey, maybe now there’s a practical reason to clean up the pinch-welds as on other classic/retro models, including Triumph’s own Rocket 3 and T120 Scramblers? Then again, do we really need a practical issue to redress an aesthetic blemish? Best talk to the top “brass” about that . . .
I just don't see Triumph fixing my premium priced 2017 T120... or replacing the local dealership, who I'll never trust again after their repeated lying, overcharging (service - of the many bikes I've owned, the T120 being my only new bike and one of two I've had serviced rather than handling it in my garage) and change of behavior.
Absolutely positively nothing has happened. Fellow in customer service is on holiday. You are on holiday. Gear boxes continue to have problems. Yet somehow things are taking a positive turn! I don't get it.
Great job getting Triumph to be responsible. Maybe next you can talk to Royal Enfield about partnering with Harley Davidson dealerships to sell their motorcycles in the U.S. Harley has a terrible reputation - see this smart analysis: ua-cam.com/video/EOwxxsPaogY/v-deo.html I went in, after watching your videos, to check out the RE INT 650. But, instead of charging $5,999 (price listed on RE America website), the HD dealership listed the bike for $8,799 + $699 destination fee. When I asked about the price discrepancy, the sales associate-who casually told me he knew next to nothing about motorcycles (“funny right,” he said, “I work at a motorcycle dealership”) told me it was because Covid disrupted the production chain. So, fewer bikes + more demand = increase prices). Does Royal Enfield want to hitch its wagons to sketchy practices of a downwardly-spiraling notoriously bad brand? I am now in the process of buying a Triumph Street Twin-cheaper than RE and superior in many ways.

Stuart i have a 2017 t120.with very low miles 46 00 i do not ride it much because of tranmission i did not know the bikes were not made in the uk if had known this i whoud not have got it old triumph rider here from bedford va thank you stuart
I’m still old school on my Bonnie. Carbs for me !!! I love the brass carb tops. Howe, I noticed they wouldn’t actually fit on real carbs. Do Motone make those covers with the internal adaptation to fit on the diaphragm spring are you aware ??
not that im aware of!
stuart fillingham. Thank you for your response. What a pity. Hey ho 🙁
Does this defect also concern the Bobber black? I was about to purchase one but I might hold off until triumph have responded if it does concern the bobber black
No one has actually reported it happening to me, on the bobber but it does have the same gearbox!
Too bad ...
Two words, just two words: Honda Africa Twin.
Ooops, that was three words ;-p
When are you going to update on the Bonneville gearbox issue?
when I've got some answers
Have Triumph fixed this gear ⚙ box probs?
Love the breif glimpse of the Bobber but unfortunately only have the budget for a jawa perak 😁
Wonder if they will ever make it to the UK ?
Hi Stuart, if you had to choose just one of your bikes to go out for a Sunday morning blast, which one would it be?
errr?
@@stuartfillingham haha, fair enough.
Good news about Triumph. I like that. Well done mr Fillingham. And brass is beautiful.
Good news indeed, well done. Not sure if I think it clever but unorthodox on Triumphs part as a method of dispensing customer care or not. Anyhow, progress is progress and thanks again 👍
Great news about Triumph Stuart cheers
Don't go easy on Triumph until fully satisfied that they have addressed the problem to your satisfaction. These firms are very good at kicking problems down the road for as long as possible to avoid warranty claims.
If the problem is a design flaw than supplying replacements parts that have not been redesigned will mean continued failures and no solution. Demand detailed plans that secure a long term fix.
Triumph have not got a good track record on this subject going back to the early Hinckley bikes
so don't be fobbed off.
"Released 52 minutes ago" Huh??? Its 11pm. Oh, thats right, I live in Arizona. :-) looking forward to your follow-up video with Triumph.
Brilliant video as always Stuart and those Motone parts are awesome and look fantastic on the bike 😃👍🏻
Those brass parts are beautiful!
Ive made a few videos!
Do anyone have gearbox problems with the 5 speed T100 watercold models 17-20?
Awesome news Stuart with Triumph opening up about the gearbox issues. I still haven't seen motone release for sale the brass clutch cable holder bracket that attaches to the side cover yet, do you know if this is going to be release for the T120?
I don't think its far away.
what is issue with gearbox?
Are Triumph still cooperating viz a vie a message through your channel regarding the downshift problem?
Er sort of! still waiting for some answers.
@@stuartfillingham Thanks.
A tiger cannot change its stripes
Thanks again for a great video Stuart. I have mounted some brass from Motone to my RE650 interceptor - tail light and indicator lights, but this requires some manual fitting - but looks great - or will when I am finished 😜. I would love if Motone made some more items for RE.
im working on them. actually just tested a proto tail light and indicator loom for them that just plugs straight in!
They answer was no.
go on stuart, admit it,youre addicted to the heady smell of brasso!quality vid btw.
Thank you👍
Geoff
Im afraid i know nothing more than you at the moment but i think we might just see it released around November time this year!
@@stuartfillingham November??? Much earlier than I expected. I do hope you will be in a position to do a piece on this bike when it does arrive, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate an unbiased objective opinion when the time comes. Thanks again 👍👍👍
Where is that brass clutch cable piece from?
Its a motone prototype I don't think they are far off now!
Very good, thanks for sharing this one.
Thank you so much for making this video. Yes it is as always useful, the information and viewing please. Repect. Regards Gareth Wiltshire. Quality. Gratitude.
Lovely seat!
Great video stay safe looking forward to next one 🇬🇧👍🏻
Result!! Let's hope it's positive. You said liquid cooled Bonneville's. Are the air cooled not affected?
Just liquid cooled!
The quality of Motone's brass items is superb,I've put several bits on my T100, but personally I don't care for that design. That clutch cable holding bracket, though -- is that a production item or a prototype? I didn't see that last time I checked their website.
was a proto, due very soon i think.
Can anyone tell me if these would fit a carburettor model?
no mark they wont sorry!
Ok thanks
Hope you had a great recharging break bud. T
Yeah hi my name is Richard Dixon and I'm a veteran at the Yountville Veterans Home in California I've been following you for the last 2 years about the transmission in the triumph t120 yet to find out nothing's been done at what I see I have two friends that were interested in purchasing these motorcycles and I've deterred them from buying them don't buy a Triumph t120 the transmission is garbage you could respond and let me know I can get back to them thank you PS love your videos and your honesty Richard Dixon Yountville Veterans Home thank you
Nothing has been done im afraid.
Didn't think they would do anything about it especially the t120 keep me filled in I doubt they'll fix it or find some way to smoke screen it thank you
Well it looks like it's Harley time for next season!
@@richarddixon857 Dont buy any british bike they all went under because the jap bikes blew them away..Those who have these junk bikes are sick they have lost money
Sorry should have read ‘no gearbox problem so far’!
Wow those truimps have a great Oomph
How much is accessibility compromised by “stubby hands” and how much by the tank’s cheap looking pinch-weld? Hey, maybe now there’s a practical reason to clean up the pinch-welds as on other classic/retro models, including Triumph’s own Rocket 3 and T120 Scramblers? Then again, do we really need a practical issue to redress an aesthetic blemish? Best talk to the top “brass” about that . . .
I’ve just bought a T100, didn’t know there was a gearbox issue. 😧
Rest easy, I have 23k miles with no issues on my 2017 t100🤟🏼
beautiful !
Pleasure not pleased. Haaaaaa regards Gareth Wiltshire. Gratitude.
And as he drops an anti-magnetic SS screw into the carb, he's thinking, should I have taken the tank off !***!!!. Cheers Gordon
I want a T 💯 but I'm thinking no?
The pleasant and polite letters are the worst! 😂 Brass? You are a secret steam punk Mr F.
4 years ago how time passes
Love Motone and the brass parts. Do wish they had an shiny brass monza fuel cap.
Why hasn't Triumph addressed this on their own?
Absolutely positively nothing has happened. Fellow in customer service is on holiday. You are on holiday. Gear boxes continue to have problems. Yet somehow things are taking a positive turn! I don't get it.
yes it has changed they are talking to us about it which has not happened before. try exercising little positivity eh steve!
The solution to easy carb top installation is get you kids to do it or borrow neighbours kids nothing wrong with child labour it only takes 5 mins
Great job getting Triumph to be responsible. Maybe next you can talk to Royal Enfield about partnering with Harley Davidson dealerships to sell their motorcycles in the U.S. Harley has a terrible reputation - see this smart analysis:
ua-cam.com/video/EOwxxsPaogY/v-deo.html
I went in, after watching your videos, to check out the RE INT 650.
Did you see this Stuart? Royal Enfield - Continental GT 650 Custom Race Bikes ua-cam.com/video/qi2OsqR2NvU/v-deo.html
