- You dont have to be a master craftsman to be able to enamel the lettering on your motorcycle, here are some simple techniques to get you started for that old school look!

It's the little touches like this that make a motorcycle stand out. People will look at your bike, even if it's stone stock, and wonder why it looks so much better than others they have seen of the same model. It is all in the details. 👍

@@Relikore if only it were just a few accessories..... 🙄 I focus on surfaces, paint, chrome, engine coating, etc... I sold my bike last year, bone stock except for highway bars and Arlen Ness derby covers. What did my buyer see in my bike? He kept running his hands over the paint saying how smooth it was, how black the engine looked, the chrome sparkled. Nothing more than attention to details in those areas made the difference in perception.
This is fantastic ive often thought the lettering on my Continental looked like it was missing a certain something. This is it!
I did this on my AJS long time ago. My old dad looked and said "a bit of bull that, lad" and smiled. Great to know the correct way to do it tho', looks good, thanks👍
If you have trouble finding engine enamel in a tin you can use rattle can engine enamel which is readily available. Just spray a little into the plastic lid, let it flash off for a few seconds, and then use the brush as described. Keep up the good work!
Hey can you give more insight into how to do this, as after spraying enamel into the plastic lid.. the enamel dries out fast. Hence not able to do the brush kind of application.
Can you suggest some product alternate to this ? Thank you.

Another *archive quality video* , Unca Stu! Here in the U.S., I think "white spirits" would usually be called "lacquer thinner". And just to be obsessive, before applying the first coat of paint, I'd wipe the bare metal depressions with a Q-tip wetted with acetone to remove any possible oil film that may linger on the surface.
Hi there Stu, I have the chrome Interceptor 2019 , nearly 2500 miles done now, always watch your Vid's followed your advice in regard to maintainance and especially polishihg andit really has made a suprising results, also bought all the materials that you advised doing the painting now on the casings and also polished up the tall RE screen and now intend to paint in Red the Royal Enfield name into the bottom of the screen, the material has polished up to a mirror finish so the red RE name will look amazing and really stand out, I do get alot of pleasing remarks about the appearance of my Interceptor,from the general public, all ot the aditional improvements that you have broadcast over the last 2 years, I have taken heed to and also had some customised rear crash bars made to match the large front crashbars, incorperating a rear carrier all in stainless steel, and I have upgraded the supension with the chrome Hadon Shocks , fitted the risers and the union jack tank pads from Motone, also the DNA filter and element,and the booster plug the bike runs really well now and the Hadon shockers gives a big upgrade to the road holding, I have had very good advice from you and your programmes and refer to them at all times, I am 80 years old now and learning all the time thanks to the guidence of you programmes please keep up the good work and thank you again with Respect Bryan Medway

A very nice instructional video Mr Fillingham; the right level of detail, uncharacteristically humble in places and to the point, and also happily missing your usual petulance regarding other people's bad habits etc. A genuine contribution to the motorcycling community and arguably hobbyists elsewhere. Having come to the conclusion that you are something of a perfectionist (a good thing, of course) I'm guessing that the pit in the metal underneath the capital 'E' on the primary drive cover must be extremely irritating for you. Just don't think about it. And please keep up the good work.

Okay, that being said. I have been watching your videos for quite sometime now, and you English is just on the Top. It's like benchmark in English to my ears. I am willing to pay top $$ just to learn the way you speak. Just even a bit!

To get the nice sharp edges, I would use a squeegee block like that use to wrap cars. Paint on the enamel, wait 5mins and then squeegee strait off. Wipe the squeegee and repeat.
This also works to fill stone chips on car bonnets etc.
It will tear the edges!

Nice touch Stuart.I did it when I restored an old xj550 .It made a lot of difference to the look of the engine.

Good job, modern paints just have no body to them any more.
We used to use cellulose paint, two flood coats letting it sink back between coats then using an acrylic disc wrapped tightly in lint free cloth (you just wrap the disc and keep turning the cloth at the back until it's super tight) and slightly dampened with celly thinners, wipe over the top until it's done. That was all flat work on engraved brass signs but worked well. Not sure if you can easily get celly paint now.
No cellulose is i believe difficult to obtain these days!
As for paint: If you can't drink it, you cant' sell it.

Painting the RE logo with the colour used in petrol tank makes your machine look more classic.
Back in the day they were all painted in what RE called Royal red. They still use this for the lettering on their tank badges. I decided to go for authenticity

Hello Stuart, My old Laverda 1200 had the Laverda logo on it's primary drive cover and timing cover infilled in black enamel.

Really enjoyed your video. I painted my Royal Enfield Bullet logo on my engine block. But not so professional I feel. I just used black Hammerite paint. But it gave me the desired look. I look forward to seeing your next video.

Tip: You can also scrub a candle first like the sandpaper, then paint, let it dry and melt the wax.

I intend to buy a Royal Enfield Interceptor, when my eye surgery is completed, and may have a go at this. Thanks for the tips on how it is done. My choice would be black enamel, as I think this would suit polished aluminium best, but that of course is just personal preference.

They were both alloy engine casing in the video, he was just explaining the process and showing an example of how to do it. The 'Royal Enfield' logo on the engine casing should have the sanding method used for a better finish. On mine I had to sand the whole casing to remove the factory scratches, they come a little bit rough, as if they did it quickly, mine looks like chrome now. I used brass enamel paint on mine as the I have started to fit brass accents to the rest of the bike.
Thanks Uncle Stu for yet another classy video. The paintwork is simple yet elegant. Small but such exquisite details make a bike stand out. Would you consider painting the fuel tank edge seam in black. I have got mine taped over and it certainly cleans up the look a bit. Makes a subtle difference. Perhaps if you put your mind to it you could find a better way to do it.
Another query...which Halcyon bar end mirrors would consider for fitment on the Interceptor..
I quite like the seams on the tank, it makes the bike look honest!

I was wondering how to do that on my Classic since last year. Now that I’ve seen it “ Expertly “ accomplished.... I have no choice but to apply your skills to my Wee Friend. And !!! I didn’t consider doing that to my Interceptor , but it’s quite Grand !!! I’ll have to Muddle over Colour ( not American Color ) schemes, for both. The Classic is the Chrome Graphite, Interceptor is the Black. Long decision time. Not like we don’t have time to sit around Nowadays Eh ?? ( plus I’ve Retired August 1st. Great Project for a New Layabout ) !!!

Great instructions!. Question, is the case of your Interceptor chrome finished or is it aluminum or other. I have a 2021 Baker Express I would like to enamel and I think the engine case is aluminum....

Thanks, Stuart - those engine casing letters on my Interceptor were just begging to be painted - now I know how to do it. Halfords do a 250ml tin of high temperature engine paint for £7.49 in black or red. The description says "up to 180 degrees - that should be adequate, don't you think?
Yep easily high enough. Casings shouldnt get much above 100 degrees centigrade.
Thank you for this video, Stuart. Any chance you could make a video on how to repair minor scratches on mudguards of Royal Enfield motorcycles. I just got a Blue lagoon Bullet 500 cc and the transporter did not do a great job. Now I can’t find touch up paint for it. Thank you and all help is welcome.
I think petroleum jelly over the top of the surface would prevent over painting.
Would also likely contaminate your work. The object is to overpaint.
So to confirm, the 650 INT has a chrome casing, not a polish aluminum?
