Watching this on my brand new Pixel 4a. I bought it mainly for the camera and the fact that it's 128gb of storage at a lower price than the iPhone SE. Having said that I've noticed a significant amount of hiccups with the software which concerns me. Things like double tapping the screen to zoom in or out of a pic and it not responding all the time, apps randomly crashing, apps not opening in dark mode even though I changed it in the settings and some apps did start to open in dark mode and others not. Hopefully it'll overcome these issues and I'll be happy with my purchase. If not I'm glad the new iPhones are just around the corner just in case.

well, that whole argument for the iPhone in that it holds on to shadows and such is in my opinion unique to the SE, since it's bigger brothers actually seem over HDRed imo. The Pro Max typically likes to bump up those shadows and leaves you with gray looking images :/ While the 4a is a very very slight downgrade from the regular 4, still preffer the color science, contrast, exposure, etc. on it.

Based off the results of MKBHDs camera competitions, I think it's NECESSARY to show the results when uploaded to various sites. At this price point, that's pretty much the only place the pictures are ending up and being viewed. Would be interested in this comparison.
I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video, was looking for a good camera in a budget smartphone, and needed a good comparison between these two phones. Thank you.
The 4a is £50 cheaper. Does that make up for the lack of processor power? Also, slight flaw in the review: if you are used to Android, would a £400 phone make you switch to Apple? And, of course, vice versa. Overall, great, detailed review!
Bunch of Android fans whining because the Pixel didn’t win. Well, the processing power does play a part of the camera using experience. There’s no way you can blame her for using that as a criterion. But, for it to be truly the best value, it needs to be faster, and it needs to be more accurate with contrast like the iPhone is, maybe next time.
I really liked this format and the execution of this video! Becca, you and the team killed it!
Nice comparison. However, I think if you are factoring in processing time then it would be fair to also factor in battery life where the Pixel wins.
And also the screen on the iPhone, which is laughable.
Agree the se has a seriously poor battery particularly when taking photos/videos...
The battery life on the SE is all bad.
It's definitely passable but certainly not groundbreaking
Actually this should have been a valid point
Like you could click 200 more photos on the Pixel 4A while the iPhone SE would have been lying dead
Mayank M not true actually. I have the SE 2020 since day one and the baterry is not that bad at all. You can definitely do a day trip while using the camera all time long. Although in 2020 the Battery should be bigger. (Sorry for mistakes, not a native speaker).
Jordan Todorov your statement is not true FOR ME because my battery does not last all day!
Hunter T ok so maybe your usage of the phone is bigger then mine. I am on cellular data all day long, using social medias, spotify, safari, etc. (not playing games and bluetooth almost always off though). If the battery is not big enough for your usage I can recommend battery case. I have bought one for 30€ (not original from apple) and I am using only while traveling and it prolongs the battery life for like three days.
Edit: never mind, saw Becca’s correction (Old comment: 4:00 you mean digital zoom? Optically zoom 5/7 times seem too good to be true)
Nice details appreciated like the speed open up the camera, shooting and opening the picture, among other tiny things mentioned. For me, that things make the difference between reviews.
i swear becca brings life to the verge
True
why absolutely nobody here on UA-cam talks about photosphere feature on pixel??? I used it quite often while travelling and its super nice. Wide angle, fish eye, 360 degree photo, you name it, it has got it.l and their quality is amazing too.
I use that all the time and it is a wonderful feature to have
Great video, as always from you and the Verge!
I really respect how The Verge is never afraid of naming their champion. This is so cool in the world where most other tech websites usually go with the "it's up to you to decide blah-blah-blah" mantra.
Exactly.
Simple guy here. I see Becca, I click in

@@malthevlds9667 I'd simp for Becca's vids any day my dude
@@nealmusic ok my dude
I was so shocked when you said that you guys surpassed 3M subs. I’ve been watching the verge even before you hit 500k I think. Nice job!
I hear ya! I believe I subscribed in the first 10k maybe even sooner, they keep growing!
6:30
wow I'm actually impressed that the SD730G wasn't even that far behind. I have heard the a13 costs around $100/$400 of the SE2. I think its a bit overkill since i wouldn't enjoy gaming on that screen.
P.S. The 4a destroys the iphone's camera. Is a much better overall phone
If you go apples to apples the 4a is $350 for a 128gb of storage. The Iphone SE is $450 for 128gb of storage. The 64gb SE is $400.
@@NotNowLater true dat
I love the style of this video. It's a whole adventure!
If it's Becca, I'm gonna click-a.
Hey Becca, turn on the camera grid in iphone settings. It uses the accelerometer as well to show you levels. See what happenes when you take a pic of a document on a table. Love this little feature!
Another great review. I think it's really a personal preference of what phone works best for each individual. Stay awesome Becca!
5x optical zoom, comon verge editors it's called digital zoom😂
It was a typo, they corrected it
Best phone for astrophotography for budget and some tips too !
just download neutral cam for iphone se
They just showed the night mode on the Iphone is horrendous, so why would one even contemplate it as an option for astrophotography?
The 4a has an astro mode and is the best budget option.
@@rachidhf4579 it can be done with software. Astrophotography is really all about opening the shutter for long exposures and then stitching the photos together. It's not rocket science.
I just have to appreciate the way you approach your videos! So fun to watch.
Love this kind of video
For me the Pixel is the best package for the price, the camera is just the cherry on top
Feels like she had to think of something so the iPhone wins, that's why the processing power is such a big deal because nobody has 2 spare seconds to wait for the image to get processed...
@@dominikseljan3043 lmao
The verge is like Apple insider, according to them pixel has never beaten a iPhone in a camera battle.
And the one year the pixel 2 objectively beat the iPhone XS they said “camera isn’t everything”
well, that whole argument for the iPhone in that it holds on to shadows and such is in my opinion unique to the SE, since it's bigger brothers actually seem over HDRed imo. The Pro Max typically likes to bump up those shadows and leaves you with gray looking images :/
While the 4a is a very very slight downgrade from the regular 4, still preffer the color science, contrast, exposure, etc. on it.
I always thought the iPhone was a much better camera for video, but I was surprised to see the Pixel 4a holding up to it!
Own both topline Pixel and iPhone. Still image Pixel triumph by quite margin, but video iPhone do take the crown too.
What iphone did you have? Also what pixel did you judge? Just curious because iphone has always had been video, but Pixel has been pic KING 👑.
Are u blind ? Pixel didn’t hold up at all it was crushed by iPhone with pixel overheating
the highlight on the heating warning is a big help, Becca. Especially I think for people who are on the fence between a Sony camera and a smart phone (for videos).
I really enjoyed how you did this video and the phone comparison. Keep up the creative work, videos. Thanks
Based off the results of MKBHDs camera competitions, I think it's NECESSARY to show the results when uploaded to various sites. At this price point, that's pretty much the only place the pictures are ending up and being viewed. Would be interested in this comparison.
Your manner on videos are enduring - great to watch and informative 👍😄
"hella good" - I smiled.
Gosh do you have enough headphones😂😂😂
Erik Dreyer There is no such thing as enough headphones.
can you do a direct sunlight selfie comparison on both the iphone and pixel
How about the Battery and Speakers? Which one is better?
"hold on to the blacks" -Becca Farsace, 2020
😬😬
Definitely the best episode to this day! Keep up the good work! 🙂
I wish there were more samples than talking
I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video, was looking for a good camera in a budget smartphone, and needed a good comparison between these two phones.
Thank you.
With verge, you already know that its apple who is always the winner. You dont even need to watch the video.
Really no ones gonna mention those huge bezels on the iPhone SE
Really no ones gonna mention how the pixel overheats after 15 minutes of recording video
@@Woeotto you still believe that no one has mentioned that
Matte black vs gloss white, in direct sunlight there will be a huge difference in temps (think asphalt vs concrete)
You wouldnt say a camera that takes 10 seconds to take a photo is the same to the one that takes a second just because they have the same image quality.
Love your videos! Can’t wait for the next edition.
Those transitions between locations are god tier!
Congratulations on the 3M subs, love what you do. KEEP UP!
I mean these are both amazing phones for the price, and they're both so close. it's really all about choosing between an iPhone and pure Android bliss
The Pixel does give you an amoled display
@@joelvarghese3370 that is true! it's not *exceptional* though.
both of these phone screens are... fine. if you're paying less than $400 for a phone usually you won't care though
I totally disagree. A display is something that you would be looking at all the time. Hence the display has to be good. And amoled us much much much better than an lcd of the same refresh rate. Also since the iPhone has such a small battery amoled would be the best option. For me in terms of over-all use the pixel 4a is better and the display is a major contributing factor to my bias
Appreciate that you made a choice. Please tell the others to do the same
Hi Becca and the Galaxy s10e, is it worth it in 2020?
You really don't need a mask, when you sit alone in your car, Bekka.
Hey! Please can you link where you bought your wide lens for the iPhone for? Thanks!
You can use grid to align the photo in both :)
The only thing were the Pixel is better are low light situations. Under normal conditions the iPhone is a bit better. But in video mode, iPhone is 2 levels better than the pixel.
Wow , just wasted 8 min of my life , wtf verge always clings on to the iPhone ??
You are a android user huh
what happened to the battery , which drained more ?
Its Verge! What do u expect? Even before the video started I knew they were going to hand it to the iphone. No mention of 128gb storage which helps u store ur photo bank. Highly biased towards iphone se when u say night photos can be improved with brightness adjustments. Throughout the video it was all about how both phones take standard pictures! So please. And no mention of astro photography in pixel 4a? Come on...u guys are redicilous! A camera comparison where iphone wins because of processor😂
How does the pixel portrait mode pair with the moment wide or 14mm fisheye lens? I've been thinking about purchasing the wide lens just to counteract the zoom in that the pixel does with portrait photos.
I just love Becca videos, i'm glad that she has more space on The Verge. I'm looking for an SE since my 1st gen SE is crumping
@2:06 The turtle commentary is hilarious! 😂
The Poco Phone F2 Pro or Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite could be also interesting for this kind of comparison
I have both of them 😉
What brand is the fish eye lens?
That was an Amazing becca thnks for sharing 🔥🔥🔥
The front camera is definitely better on the Pixel. I think that's pretty evident in the pictures here.
These aren't budget phones, they are midrange phones. They're too expensive to be budget phones, especially the iPhone. Tech enthusiasts should know this of all people.
Actually it depends from region to region. The iPhone se 2020 is 42k where I'm from the same cost of a OnePlus 8. That isn't budget at all.
In the USA however 400 usd for the SE would be a budget phone.
@@prafulsai8020 400 is NOT a budget price for a phone 🤦🏾♂️
The night mode on the iPhone SE is the most disappointing part :(
There's no night mode at all on the SE
allen mobley right, the lack thereof
Ikr obviously the most differentiating feature in a phone camera is probably the most important one to highlight instead of burying.
Congrats on 3M! 🎉🎉 you've got the iconic Dieter and You to thank for it. Best content every time!
I like ur videos, they're fairly comprehensive but also light and fun.
What was the music at 3:41
I love the way how you shoot this video ❤️
Good video, slow down the jump cuts when showing shots and video clips of the cameras. This is the first video in a long time that I actually had to watch on a slower speed at times (i usually watch vids on 2x+)
There two big technical errors in the video. First: neither of these cameras have optical zoom (which means the lens moves physically to zoom).
Second: both lenses are wide angle lenses, not ultra wide but also not standard. The whole terminology is used wrong by the phone industry.
