I had heard of the Elizabeth Fry society in Canada, but only just found out she was from my home city, Norwich. I'm surprised we were not taught about this wonderful woman in school!
I was always astounded by the terrible way England treated her poor, destitute and prisoners. England, which was such a civilized country, seemed to turn a blind eye toward these poor unfortunates. Elizabeth Fry unlike the vast majority of her peers (including Queen Victoria and the other royals) saw it all and acted. I am amazed at what she accomplished during her life and the many people she influenced to help her. I am so glad you posted this short biography of her life. thanks.
@@alittlebitofhistory Victoria was deeply injured by her childhood and also had the straitjacket of being a monarch to deal with. Once her husband, the love of her life, had died, Victoria went into a deep depression. Perhaps seeing Elizabeth Fry made her long to be a better person but her own habitual selfishness and habit of ignoring the needs of others made this a hopeless goal.
I really enjoy your presentations which are always beautifully narrated. This account was a good example of a life very well lived. I must note however that transportation to Australia did not cease in 1838, the last ship of transportation, the Hougamont arrived in Western Australia in 1868.
I never heard of this her until my mom found out I was related to her on my dad's side. As a Fry it was really cool finding my family's name on a chocolate bar. And im glad to know even my family all the way back then believed in equality as i do. Also this was a really good video :)

Even the golf players may be doing good, if they refrain from crime, treat others with respect and kindness, pay their taxes, do their job responsibly and well, and they care for the environment and drive safely. That lifestyle prevents a lot of suffering and enables the community to function well. Not everyone is meant to be a reformer. Elizabeth Fry would have been supported by many helpful Quakers who each just did a bit to help her, despite being busy with their jobs and families. Fry's family were probably crucial in enabling her to have the time and availability to do so much.
I was born and raised in Brighton. The last few years has seen an explosion in homelessness here. I found myself homeless last year. I'm articulate and educated and knew where to go, and what was needed. God help the terminally confused, bewildered and acopic.(derivation Acopia, an inability to cope and handle day to day crap.)

The Quaker method of respecting the fact that anyone can be allocated a "concern" by God and that other Quakers should support that person to respond to it, would have supported Fry in her work.

She was an ancestor of my sister in law...who lives in norwich as i do..we have spent many a happy hour at Earlham park/Hall through our lives and always think of her.

Hope you dont mind me posting this, might be of help to you ..Gaol is an alternative spelling of jail, and it means the same thing. Historically, gaol was predominant in British English until roughly 1935, at which point jail became the more popular option.
Well the Ripper has nothing to do with this area so outside of what im going to cover, I do plan of covering the Plagues that have hit the area and some point.
Here in the USA the Society of Friends were a driving force for reform too. The SoF didn't believe in a free ride. To earn reform 1 was reqd. To do Penance. I think it started w/8 hrs Bible reading. Hence the word Penitentiary. The 1st State to give it a go was ofc, Pennsylvania. Friend Elizabeth's pebble still sends ripples.
Fry was loved by many outside of England. In some countries, Churchill is regarded as little more than a War Criminal. Her image should have stayed on the note.
Why do you brand Churchill a war criminal? I thank the likes of Churchill for standing up against the tyranny that could have befallen much of the world if it had not been defeated. Yes he made mistakes ( The Dardanelles ) but which Allied leader didn’t, also I thank the other Allied leaders who were all effective in bringing an end to Nazism.

However he was the man of the hour in WWII and we owe him big time for that. Once the war was over, the British moved him out of politics.
“Gaol” is simply pronounced as “Jail”. It’s the commonwealth spelling of the word. It’s modern spelling, used in England, Australia etc. It’s just pronounced the same as the American “Jail”. Otherwise, great work. Keep it up.
Elizabeth Fry gave testimony to a Parliamentary committee, and her proposed gaol reform act was passed in 1823. A big part of the act was giving women prisoners separate quarters and female matrons instead of male guards. Two hundred years later, governments in the Anglosphere are allowing male prisoners into the female prison estate if they identify as women. We need a modern day Elizabeth Fry to fight for women prisoners.
I was wandering through my personal library when I spotted a biography of Elizabeth Fry. Went to UA-cam to get a brief summary of her life and found your channel. Thank you for your effort. I was disappointed in your labeling her a "feminist". Yeesh. Far from it. She was a Christian who applied her Faith to society and politics. This is an accurate description. Modern day Feminism despises Christianity, motherhood, marriage etc. God bless.

Shows how times have changed. Elizabeth Fry just saw people who needed help. Now in modern times we have NACRO and Shelter telling the white prisoners and white homeless people that they have "white privilege", so they shouldn't moan too much about their situation 😠

When I went to school here in Australia in the first half of the 1970s we were taught "gaol". Now my spell checker changes it to "ball"!
Correct. And Gaol and Jail are pronounced the same way. If you look at the letters Ga = Jay and ol = Ole.

Learnt about her when I was in school (uk) so I knew a bit about her ,but it was niceto find out more about her and her family.

I live the Churchill debate to people far more educated than me but I agree Fry should of stayed on £5 note.

That's not true. She was *against* the slave trade, not part of it. As were most Quakers, afaik; they were pretty important in the abolition movement.
