What's even more mindblowing is that the SMRPG remake is actually coincidentally releasing on the same day as the Mario and Luigi series' 20th anniversary. I just hope it returns soon like you said, just with a different studio. Let's hope its magic retains.

I love Geno, but it’s honestly BS he gets so much more recognition than Mallow, who’s a more relatable character with an actual arc and a slightly better design (imo). It’s only because Geno is the “cooler” character, but whatever. Hopefully with this remake, Mallow will get more recognition and will stop being the Kraid to Geno’s Ridley.

That’s what I’m saying. If this puppy sells, we might actually get a real, proper sequel after all these years. It’s honestly more likely to happen than it was for Nintendo to greenlight a remake in the first place.

At this point, Tanabe and Intelligent Systems are backed into a corner. With each new Mario game on Switch, their explanations from interviews become more and more hollow.
If their next Paper Mario game lacks creative characters yet again, they will basically face Pokemon-levels of backlash. And whats worse for them is that they can no longer rely on their typical excuses. They will just be hit with TONS of evidence from the fans online.

@@almondjoy4938Nintendo has been trying to streamline everything Mario pretty much since the Wii. I guess in the same way they recycle the wind waker art style for every other Zelda. It saves them money when you don't have design unique characters or think of a story beyond "save peach from bowser."
So the RPG remake being faithful, and wonder being bizarre as it is. Is them pushing the reset button on what they've been doing.

I really want old AlphaDream employees to maybe band together to make a new dev company and revive the Mario and Luigi games. But with the creativity of the first few games, not whatever happened with Paper Jam.
And hopefully, down the road, Intelligent Systems will start living up to their namesake again and let Paper Mario be weird and unique once more.

@@madnessarcade7447 Just barely. Origami King was good but it’s still lacking in some areas. It still feels overall sterile when you compare it to what they did with TTYD and especially Super. I want *that* level of weirdness and uniqueness again.
@@madnessarcade7447 yeh it is weird just not in the good way. The orinal ones were rather surprsingly serious. Honestly, I liked that more for the Paper Mario serious. Jokes are fine but not everything must be a joke. At a certain point jokes aren't fun anymore.

Wouldn't Mario RPG and potentially TTYD coming back mean the opposite instead? Creative Mario era would imply they're doing new ideas not just rereleasing 2 old mario rpgs in some form.

I would love to believe this, but I feel like if this rumor was true it would of been showcased in the recent direct.
Paper Mario 64 can be the big remake before we return to form but I highly believe Paper Mario TTYD Remastered will come out first

I never got to play SMRPG, but I grew up being a massive fan of M&L ( I didn't grow up with paper mario). I know it's the not the same thing, but I have been itching for a new traditional Mario RPG for years, so I'm very excited
M&L, as well as Paper Mario, were directly inspired by SMRPG - so there'll be a lot of familiar things in there for ya'.
Just gotta' have an open mind when you play it. Even as a new remake, it may feel a little slower-paced and "easy" compared to other RPGs. But the difficulty and speed will raise over time.
@@mrdocena8082I agree, but I do think M&L is a bit closer to SMRPG, except the latter has more characters in the party (ala Paper Mario), not as much dodging, although the badge system is more like M&L where it directly affects party stats.
SMRPG is better than any of the M&L or Paper Mario games.
And I do like the good M&L games but I always disliked the lack of a real party (also disliked the "partner" system in Paper Mario) and the tone could be a little too goofy at times. (Partners In Time had a great story though)
No other Mario RPG quite captures the same magic as Super Mario RPG.

If they completely remastered them and designed them specifically for the Switch, then that'd be an entirely different argument.
And more of a response towards ignochomp, but: SMRPG doesn't mean they're good friends now. It just means they're willing to do proper business with each other again (as opposed to only giving/getting spin-off games, side games, and DQ games [which is more on the Enix end]).
@@mrdocena8082 The switch is still getting plenty of FF games though, to be fair the only reason they aren't getting new numbered titles to begin with is because of the limitations of the switch, the new games are made with current gen consoles in mind. So working on versions of those games only for switch would need even more development time.
I'm really happy about this game's existence and that's not just from the copium I'm huffing to believe that Mario RPG will possibly be able to bring Mario & Luigi out of limbo inadvertantly. I never got to play SMRPG so this seems like a great way to experience it. I believe Mario's at it's best when it gets wild and and creative so seeing Nintendo go that route for a lot of major Mario titles in the Switch era has been nice to see.

Yeah, it seems the Mario & Luigi series was a sequel to Super Mario RPG in my opinion. Paper Mario is a separate world from the main universe. So perhaps if we could get a new rpg that's a spiritual successor to the Mario & Luigi series.
@@zenvariety9383Why do people think Paper Mario ORIGINALLY was meant to be a separate universe when the story elements mostly set that it is just Mario but in an RPG game...I'd argue BOTH M&L and classic Paper Mario were spiritual successors of SMRPG (M&L had a more complex stat system, Paper Mario had the HP/FP/SP-like system).
I really hope that there is a sequel for Super Mario RPG after the remake ❤️ Its the first video game I’ve ever owned and means so much to so many people.
maybe Nintendo drops Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario due to the failings (not to blame M&L the company responsible for them just got broke) for a Mario RPG serious to finally have true RPGs again for Super Mario.

At this point Super Mario RPG should be the Mario RPG series and Paper Mario should be a Zelda-like action/adventure series with all real-time combat.
The pointless turn-based combat with no EXP or real rewards is what ruined The Origami King, an otherwise decent game.

I 100% agree with everything you said. Personally, Mario & Luigi is my favorite of the Mario RPG series, I grew up with those games, and they were so unique, so I really hope they get a new team to work on the games to bring them back. It'd be awesome having 4 Mario RPGs at the same time, wondering which one will get a sequel or DLC next.

I cried hard when they announced this remake, cause its showing me that Nintendo finally cares. It cares about its RPGs now and has revived my destroyed hopes and dreams for future Mario RPGS. Along with Marios overall direction with its creativity and innovation with Super Mario Wonder. I love that there are new enemies and new characters which in a 2d mario game we havent seen since new super mario bros for DS (hell even back in Super Mario Land 2) and Im all for it! No more monotony and uninspired world map designs and characters from this point forward hopefully! This is going to be the year of Marios redemption

Ngl I HOPE the mario mandates become real, and that those mandates require Mario games to not look and feel boring.
It's crazy to think that the game that was created right before Square Enix's infamous split with Nintendo will now be the ultimate sign of how well they've mended that relationship and it may finally result in getting the sequel fans have always wanted from it. Not only that but it bodes well for Smash too as it means none of Square enix's charachters will be going anywhere if there's a new game.

@@ausgod538 Oh sure but you could always get the sense that they were still like uneasy with each other but seemed to want to try to work together again at least. And over time you could see them become more willing to shake hands but they would'nt call themselves best friends again. I think Cloud getting into Smash changed all that and then Ultimate erased any doubt about it. Infact seeing this remake of Mario rpg only makes me more confident if there's a new smash game those charachters won't be going anywhere.
I really hope that Mario and Luigi comes back with a new developer to take over just like when Mario party got a new developer after Huston soft went bankrupt and bought by Konami.
If we could have a potential Square Enix Mario RPG sub-series, Paper Mario, M&L, and maybe even Mario + Rabbids living in harmony... that'd be like the four nations in Avatar finally coming together in peace at the end.

This remake gives me hope for Mario rpgs. Paper Mario 1 and TTYD remakes/ports would be AMAZING. And who knows what could happen with the Mario & Luigi series.
Yeah, they could port the 3DS remakes of the Mario & Luigi games and remake Partners in Time. Yet new entry could work before porting the remakes.
I really want a remake of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga next! That was my very first Mario RPG.
They made one for 3DS but maybe they can make one for Switch or the next console

After AlphaDream went bankrupt and Paper Mario still refusing to be an RPG, I was worried that Mario RPG games as a whole might be dead. So thank god this remake was announced. Hopefully it also sends a message to the Paper Mario developers of the appetite for Mario RPG games.
I'm not going to hold my breath for Paper Mario returning to form and making great games again. Intelligent systems have been very stubborn on how they treat the series. Tanabe even said he listened to the fans feedback and decided to go with the new trajectory anyway.
From the perspective of Nintendo, they are showing great promise. The fact they announced Mario Rpg Remake after alpha dream went bankrupt, intelligent systems refusing to go back to an rpg style for paper mario, and ubisoft telling the creators of Mario + Rabbids there won't be another game due to "underperforming sales" means Nintendo is showing an interest in keeping mario rpgs alive. Now what needs to happen is this game needs to sell really well. I'm not talking zelda or pokemon numbers, but enough that it makes nintendo some decent money. Here's hoping🤞
Edit: Okay, so the real thing about Mario and Rabbids was that Sparks of Hope underperformed, and so Ubisoft canceled 3 unannounced games to respond to a perceived industry wide shift to "Mega brands." That said, they DID NOT say Mario and Rabbids was over, but it doesn't look good for it either.

I am so so happy that Princess Daisy is in a mainstream Mario game 🎉. After you mentioned that Mario RPG could hypothetically get a sequel, I would absolutely love for Daisy to appear in it. Peach looks stunning in the remake in her modern dress, so seeing Daisy in a story heavy game in the style would be epic.
Isn't the Mario Land series mainline? The first one has you rescue Daisy in her debut game. Second has you fight Wario in his debut game.

Screw you, the Mario and Luigi games have always been better than Paper Mario, they're the games that should come back and take over. Basically only the first 2 games have any form at all, and the super might be good but it's not even turn based. Mario and Luigi has been much more consistent and good in comparison, and really only has one bad game that's not even that bad. Paper Mario has 2 out of 5 games being good unless you count super then it's 2 out of 6 games are good. Mario and Luigi has 4 out of 5 good games. Paper Mario should die and Mario and Luigi should come back and take over.

I want too see Link make an appearance in a Mario RPG game or sequel RPG, would be cool too have a Links Awakening type of link in these Mario Games. Having a sword attack and a shooting bob ombs from his bow or Boomerang throw as a couple of attack options. Link would fit in great next to Mario, Bowser and Co.
Isn't there a Zelda reference in Mario rpg? Pretty sure there is, I just don't remember when. Like a picture of him or something somewhere or like Mario wears a green tunic for a second or something?
@@dudeman5303 yeah Link appears in one of the Inns sleeping on one of the beds. But he’s not a playable character added to the party, which is what I’m hoping Nintendo switches up. Mario RPG would be a perfect game for a couple characters like Link, Samus, Kirby to show up in as playable characters in a Mario World.
I love how with the announcement of this remake of Super Mario RPG it really shows just how much Nintendo is actually acknowledging their older games. Just like how The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shinning Pearl they're preserving what made it good while giving it some new stuff for old and new fans alike to enjoy. The Mario RPG series that being Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, and Super Mario RPG have a special place in my heart and seeing a remake of the original with these modern 3D animations and cinematic cutscenes that really express the game in the modern day and age shows a lot. Just the fact that if Super Mario RPG does well we could possibly see a remake of Paper Mario in the future and maybe a possible sequel to Super Mario RPG. As Nintendo is trying to look back at what made their RPGs good in the first place giving us hope that they'll learn from this to bring the unique style in the world of Mario that everyone loved. But I'm excited to play the Super Mario RPG remake when it comes out this year along with the new Princess Peach game and the Luigi's Mansion 2 Dark Moon remake coming out next year.
I credit this game with my taste in video games, up to playing this I mostly played platformers but this made me love RPG games and was the first I really embraced a games story

Ya kinda have to wonder if the sanitization of Mario that we had gotten used to was in part because of some arbitrary rules Iwata had put in place for the characters and world. The timing kinda lines up pretty well for the weird side of Mario to be re-unlocked not long after he passed away.
My wildest prediction is that they’ll make a collection of all the Mario and Luigi games for either the switch or the next console. Although we are getting a remake of freaking Mario RPG so honestly anything is possible at this point
When i saw mario plus rabbids sparks of hope didn't sell well, I figured that we wouldn't be getting anymore mario rpgs. Rabbids was the only one that was still getting support. This gives me a slight hope that we might get more M&L games if they want to get a new studio to make them.
It underperformed but wasn’t a flop because how Ubisoft games are bound to price drop their games.

Idk as happy as I was about the superstar saga remake since I never played the original, with the original on GBA online it doesn’t really feel necessary. I’m not even sure inside story could work on switch with how much the two screens were utilized on ds

Daisy isn’t just a spin-off character. She debuted in Super Mario Land back in 89 and was even in the first Mario movie
If they did any other art style I would be livid and furious. But thank god, they kept the art style and this game looks incredible

The Mario RPG remake has the reaction that I feared the rumored TTYD HD remaster would do. All of a sudden because they are remaking this game it somehow means Paper Mario will go back to what it used to be, I saw Chuggaconroy's reaction where he screamed "Mario RPGs aren't fucking shit anymore!".
I find it really strange that there's such a high demand for a Mario RPG and when they do it they won't put their money where their mouth is because it's *specifically* not Paper Mario. You'd think that with Modern Paper Mario making so many people upset the 3DS Mario and luigi games would fly off the shelves in response, but no. Most people only cared when AlphaDream went bankrupt and even when that happened people thought that meant Paper Mario was somehow obligated to go back.
I'm not mad this is getting remade, I'm just bothered by the false hope it's giving people, watch 2 or 3 years later from now they announce a new Paper Mario game and it's still not the first 2.
I do hope people do buy this remake, if Mario RPGs are in such a dire situation as people say this should sell millions. Do that and we might get HD remasters or remakes of the first 2 Paper Mario games.
If you mean why didn’t the Mario and Luigi remakes on 3ds fly off the shelves it was cause the 3ds was nearing the end of its life and switch had come out if they were on switch they probably would have sold much more

I’m guessing since sticker star had just came out and color splash wasn’t announced yet at the time the backlash wasn’t as extreme yet and people thought sticker star was just a spin off they weren’t concerned about the future of the mario rpg genre

I really hope the Mario RPG remake sells well enough not just for Geno and Mallow to stay relevant and hopefully appears in more games outside of Mario RPG in the future and potentially finally get Geno in the next eventual smash game as a playable character but for the future of Mario RPGS in general. As much as I would love to see another Mario and Luigi game but at the same time if a different studio worked on it I could see the series changing drastically to what it originally was as painful as it is to say it might be best to just let the Mario and Luigi series just die out for we don't get another Paper Mario situation also with Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope underperforming in sales despite the game being great and even better than the original Ubisoft has confirmed that they canceled 3 projects after the lack of financial success with Sparks of hope which really sucks and it seems unlikely that they will make a 3rd game after that sadly. So, unless the TTYD remaster rumor is real Mario RPG seems to be the last bit of hope for the future of Mario RPGS which is why I really hope the remake sells at least well enough because if it doesn't and the TTYD doesn't get a remaster I'm 100% convinced that Mario RPGS are dead for GOOD this time. Even with the "Mandates" being removed or heavily toned down I have zero faith in Inteligent systems with how they will handle a Paper Mario 7 with their track record with the last 3 Paper Mario games especially if Tanabe has a big role with the Paper Mario 7 if TTYD didn't get a remaster and if Mario RPG remake doesn't sell enough so here hoping it does because the remake looks amazing and if would be such a shame if didn't do well enough financially.

@@_YESIMHIGH That would be a prefect combo since Mallow and Geno are the first original Mario partners in Mario RPG history but very unlikely to happen at least with 8DX maybe in Mario kart 9 tho. But even then what would Geno and Mallow special item be?
Maybe if this does well, we'll finally see more proper Mario RPG's. Whether it's a direct sequel, a return to form for Paper Mario, or something else entirely, I think we're well past due for some more Mario RPG goodness. Still hope for a real RPG Paper Mario sequel. Absolutely hate the later games in the series.

If Paper Mario did go back to their original rpg formula, but the graphics and story were still centered around arts, crafts, and paper, how would you feel?
Slight/mildly annoyed still. The game would be fun & good at that point, but then it comes to whether one prefers normal storytelling or the hyperfocus arts & crafts being the focus. I'm the former and when the last 3 games did that, there's only so many times they could keep that up before more and more would get tired of it.

To be honest, I don't want them to go back to the way Paper Mario used to be. I want them to play around with having stories centered around stuff like sketches, toys, Clay, and other such things and I could live without the old style of storytelling. (Especially if they are going to go the Super route.)
The SMRPG remake might mean two things: either a sequel is not possible so they settled with a remake or they finally solved their copyright issues and a sequel might be on the way

I cant be more happy for SMRPG, personally the too much bland, basic and lack of personality of many Mario latest series (specially Paper Mario) and the lost of some of the most originals Spin off like Mario & Luigi or Wario Land keep me away from the ip for a while
I feel like after seeing Mario Wonder in the new Mario RPG remake, I feel like they might go back to Paper Mario's original style somewhat
I think that they might go the Mario+Rabbids characters and introduce a ton of new characters and concepts but they will keep the basic direction when it comes to character.
Honestly I wouldn't mind yearly or every 2 years having a new Mario RPG if it was splint into those 4 series. One year it would be a Mario and Luigi game the next year a Paper Mario title the year after that a new Mario and Rabbids after that of course an actual continuation of the Super Mario RPG series. They would all have proper development time which would be 4 to 6 years each. Plus each has their own unique quirks so unlike other series yearly releases like Call of Duty it wouldn't get stale. The Switch itself is already an RPG machine.

I kinda believe the „Mario mandate“ thing to a degree, though I do think it’s more or less loosening or going away since Odyssey. Some things are still missing like the Toads in the Mario movie, concept art suggested we might’ve gotten female Toads and Toadsworth, but with Miyamoto involved that changed. Granted, maybe the team at Illumination were just scared of Miyamoto and the rumors surrounding him so they made it this way. But I do see all the evidence of these restrictions going away
I have fundamentally different views from you when it comes to Paper Mario but I fully endorse your sentiment about all four Mario RPGs being able to co-exist. I want Super Mario RPG 2 more than anything else but if the old Paper Mario ways returns, I won't be complaining....too much.

This is actually gonna probably be my first Mario game. Then I'm finally gonna get The Origami King which I feel was a step back in the right direction back to the level Super Paper Mario.
Tch, imagine if all of the sudden they revealed a long term project in the works for a Mario and Luigi RPG game despite the fact that Alphadream went under and tragically bankrupt and some other brand new studio or development team to take up the torch from were it was unjustly sadly snuffed out. I have a feeling that the next Paper Mario game will still be at least still an improvement from The Origami King. Probably still not The Thousand Year Door level good but at least slowly inching closer. And they don't have to drop the whole it's arts and crafts paper schtick. Just make an engaging, fun, intuitive, and fresh battle system and quality of life improvements to game mechanics and cool original characters and a solid moving story.
The funny thing is I actually enjoyed all of the Paper Mario series besides sticker star, I’m a bit sad because I tried to enjoy origami king but everyone talked down on it even while I was playing it I was getting cheated on. That whole game just brings back bad memories lmaoooo that sucks I can’t enjoy it and seeing this comment seals the deal for me. Origami king will alway be taboo to me 😢 😂I need the next Paper Mario to have flower points and badges
Don't waste your time with Origami King, dude. It's a waste of money, and far inferior to this game. Don't settle for or be satisfied with just baby steps. Buy Super Mario RPG to show that you want Nintendo to make that big leap towards a game with the same level of quality as The Thousand-Year Door.

I hope this remake will lead to an eventual remake of Paper Mario 64 and Thousand Year Door.
We may be missing the forest for the trees! If this was just a remake for remakes sake or to relaunch the m & l games they'd just do a reskin with slightly updated graphics and drop it as a digital bonus remaster or if they did want m & l back they'd just remaster those in a set or remake paper Mario or paper Mario 2! But instead this is a full blown remake with new models, cut scenes and being released as a full switch title and they have seemingly dropped the legend of the Seven Stars part so this may be nintendo reintroducing this to us old players but also presenting it as a new mario adventure to new players because they intend to continue this series as their new rpg mario series and perhaps luigi will make a full appearance soon 💜
OK I was immediately skeptical because of the Link's Awakening remake (I don't like the art style, at all. I grew up with the original and I kind of hate that they made it all overly cartoony) but this actually looks good. If it's as true to the original color palette and art style as it looks while updating the graphics and game mechanics I might actually need to play this.
I feel more like it's gonna reboot the library.

The best RPG mario game ive played when it comes to story and character building was Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. Hands down. Best RPG mario has. I really want a remake/remaster.

It's just chin to chest even when he's looking up. I know it's based more on his box art for the official game than anything else but it's weird after being used to his sprites proportions during the entire games runtime lol

Just a note, and you can certainly still believe it's bullshit, but it does make sense that the paper marios could've been restricted on their freedoms related to character designs while odyssey could mix it up. Everyone always brings this up but fails to mention, paper mario isn't made by Nintendo - it's made by IntSys, making it a second party game.
Doesn't excuse it much if you ask me, maybe the witty dialogue from TTYD just put a stick up Nintendo's ass or something. I won't pretend to know why it could be a thing, but it's far from the least believable thing to me considering Nintendo's track record with its main IPs

The chibi look of the older Pokémon games was actually intentional it wasn’t just hardware limitations because there were other games with full proportioned characters at the time and they wanted to be different and the intro sequence had us getting essentially sucked into the game

tanabe and IS has said before that the reason for the change in formula each time is because they get bored of it if they focus on it too long they like to change the gameplay formula each time as a way to challenge themselves and when they feel like they perfected/mastered it they move onto a different gameplay challenge
Hence the change from rpg to the stickerstar/color splash style then again to origami king

But... Color Splash was a clone of Sticker Star. Origami King uses the same formula for combat. The only difference is the wheel. With 0 incentive to fight and 100% incentive to run.
They could change and innovate using the old systems as a base as opposed to the system they use now.
