You've a great pair of ears. They sound like an 80s band because they basically invented the power pop template. They sound English because they were obsessed by UK music. Bittersweet melancholy beauty!!
Alex Chilton was with the Box Tops before he and the rest of Big Star put together some very original aqnd beautiful albums . Stroke It Noel is another gem . Thanks for playing this .
I cherish the band because they gave me at one point in my life that no other band could equal. No matter when we first hear this, will never hear it the same again.
Big⭐ Back Of A Car. Kangaroo. O My Soul. The India Song. too many more. Power Pop Genius of a band in the 1970's. Unheard. Unrecognized. Underappreciated. Tragic. Well.. here you go. Check them out. 3 albums. No sales. Critical acclaim. I met Alex Chilton once. Wonderful guy. Rest In Peace. Check out more of this fantastic band.
Big Star does indeed sound English at times. Especially in this song. Perhaps because like many American groups who were born out of the British Invasion their affectations were at the very least subliminally influenced. Big Star released three albums in the seventies each one very different from the others. The only common denominator sadly was horrible distribution and almost nonexistent sales. They were all highly critically acclaimed but largely ignored by the public. You need to check out more Big Star. Other great songs are September Gurls, The Ballad of El Goodo, In the Streets.
They do sound English . Difficult song for 1st time reaction , it's layered . I listen to it at least 3 times , every time I listen to it . Absolutely the most beautiful ballad I have ever heard .
Chris Bell was so enamored of the Beatles that he tried to fix it so all the songwriting would be credited to Bell/Chilton, a la Lennon/McCartney. One of the songs was written by another member of the band and he said "no" to Bell and retained his songwriting credit--and royalties--for himself.
They're all gone now, except for Jody Stephens, the drummer. They got a raw deal from their record company and they broke up quickly. There's a good documentary about the band called "Nothing Can Hurt Me". Another song of theirs I love is "Ballad of El Goodo".
both bands pioneered the "power pop" genre achieving its highest peaks, both had the worst luck with music business, specially Badfinger, and both bands never could developed their full potential, specially Big Star
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written IMO.
Big Star so great! They have a tremendous catalog; although their output was small, they made every song count.

The tones of those acoustic guitars is just dreamy.
definitely
(!James) First time hearing this song and Big Star.
You can't go wrong with Big Star. I also recommend Chris Bell's solo work, especially "I am the Cosmos."
ugh I love Big Star! ❤

Big Star are worth a deep dive..
This group featured Alex Chilton from the BoxTops (The Letter) I got to have a great conversation with him in 1990.

This should be your gateway to the fabulous Teenage Fanclub.
Big Star rocks! This song reminds me of my sister Bonnie and her husband! She passed away a few years ago! I was born in 1970. This is great music!
my first thoughts also. beautiful song but you would think its late 80 or easily early 90s which is amazing. shows alex chilton's amazing talent
Big Star, yes! such great melodies....gotta do their September Gurls, a power pop gem of a song.

This song appeared in the television series "That 70's Show" as a love song for Donna & Eric. Some may remember. Very nice song.
Also in How I Met Your Mother.
Also in Stargirl (film)

September Gurls is a must!
Big Star's background vocal harmonies are similar to the Beatles. Maybe that's why it sounds English
Hello Harri, great video about a great band. I'll follow the sun by the Beatles, as a follow up track.
I completely get why you'd think they're English
I never go far... 🌟
“I’m in love? What’s that’s song?”
Well, they were obsessed with the Beatles.
You and Your Sister
Stroke It Noel
Oh My Soul!
Chris hell was influenced by the Beatles and this is the only album he did with big star
They remind me somewhat of Badfinger -- that might be the "Englishness" you hear.
