It’s a sad song. People don’t appreciate that songs need psychological tension to be good just as much as a movie does. You can feel the anguish about failed dreams and bad decisions Danny O’Keefe must have been feeling when he wrote this song. Probably moved to Nashville, and felt like he’d screwed himself over by chasing his dreams.
