A friend of mine once commented, "If there were teenagers in Wisconsin that knew of Big Star in the 70's, then they were indeed the hippest teens in the country."
Alex Chilton called That 70s Show "That 75 Dollar Show," because he got a royalty check for the theme every time it was shown in syndication.
One of the best bands ever.

The cover that you listened to was actually by Todd Griffin which was only used in season 1, personally it’s my favorite. But seasons 2-8 was by Cheap Trick
A lot like The Velvet Underground, they didn't sell many records. But they were so influential that it seems half the people who did , started a band!

The comments you read mentioned the ironically titled #1 Record; the name of the group, which is mentioned as a possible act of "shooting themselves in the foot" was not a pretentious choice, but simply the name of a chain of supermarkets in the Memphis area. The poor distribution you alluded to was partly thought to be Ardent Records, a subsidiary of Stax Records, not really knowing what to do with them. Ardent was also in the process of folding as a label. Jody Stephens, the drummer, is the only surviving member. Enjoying this series, thanks.
Big Star's music is hypnotic, but I love it! What went wrong with Big Star is that they were emerging as that genre of music was sorta fading. If you don't know what STAX Records was, it was the down-south version of Motown. It was known for funky Soul Music and Rhythm and Blues. Big Star (from Memphis) let home town STAX Records promote them.
They didn't know how to promote Big Star and both Big Star and STAX soon failed. It was good music, it just wasn't in the right hands.
Before Big Star, Alex Chilton was already known for songs he sang for the Box Tops. There was "The Letter" and "Soul Deep" among others
Big Star is the ultimate cult master song crafters.
I think Cheap Trick still puts that song in their set list on occasion. Big Star are Most definitely power pop pioneers, along with The Flamin Groovies, check out their song Shake Some Action.
