i lived in this part of pennsylvania for nine months while attending school and seeing videos like this make me regret not visiting visiting places like horseshoe curve.
Simply a great Video !!! As a German train lover I had the chance to spend a Sunday at this spot and it was simply overwhelming, experiencing the ground vibrations, when these loco combinations passed by.
Thanks for answering my question below.I had a feeling there must be a crew in the front unit as well as one of the very back units. All I know about HS curve is ,it's near Altoona, PA.Very well known place for railfans.
Most excellent video. In Joliet IL you many BNSF trains loaded with containers and coal but they move through very slowley. Cant get a sense of power. I see the "J" also from time to time, using a caboose.
Anyhow, since my computer wont let me reply to other peoples comments let alone my own. Great video that place is awesome I went there over the early fall, and loved it, great to see those SD40-2(I think or SD45s?) Leading that freight better then those new wide cabs. Mike
The diesel is a GP9 painted for the Pennsylvania RR. IT was put there to replace the PRR K-4 pacific that was removed 9/12/85 to be restored for excursion service.
I think He is talking about the viewing platform set up for rail-fans at Homewood Illinois, along side the Canadian National[former Illinois Central] main line just South of their Markham Yard.
Do they ever cause loss of traction if lubricant gets on the rail head? Lots of flange squeal. Imagine how much more if they were NOT greased. In the late 50s/early 60s when I last visited as a little kid, there was a huge steam locomotive there. I remember that building with chimney. There also was a huge tree.
On the second freight train, they use a push-pull system. Does the very front unit have control of all units? In case of an emergency up front, the very last 2 units must cut power too. How does it work?
Four miles west of Altoona. Go out to the resevoir. Right in the middle of the state. Fly to Chicago, clear customs, get on a plane for Pittsburgh, change to a commuter plane for Altoona/Blair County Airport. Take a taxi.
Horseshoe curve was so important in moving troops and supplies during WWII that the Nazis had plans to try and blow it up but were never able to put their plot into operation.
Flange oilers for that curved track? Or would oil get on the rail head and reduce locomotive traction? Lucky to capture three trains! Lube or loosen your tripod horizontal table to stop the jerkiness. Very annoying and ruins viewing.
Dude, I have totaly respect for people older then me, But why cant you do the same for railfans, if you dont enjoy your job then you have the wrong one, it isnt about pay its about not dreading everyday to go to work, I will take your job anyday. Mike
"why would you post this video? seriously" Dumb question. For those of us who would like to see horseshoe curve and cannot get there. Nice to at least see it here.
WalkingHard101,ReagenSmash190 if u don't like watching trains, then don't watch train vids. I think robertgift and mattmaddie hit it right on the head. btw, if anyone ever gets the chance to visit horseshoe, it is AWESOME.
dude, I'm 15...It was over summer and we were bored. Btw, I saw your....1 whole video. Its not exactly awesome. At least one or two of ours had a little comical value. Yours is just of no use what so ever.

Sounds would make a great addition to my toy train layout along with the Train sounds already installed. I love the sqeaking and squeeling wheels!
What a cool place! Must be a trainspotter's paradise. :)
Very nice shooting..........I hope to visit the curve next summer.

Hey is Amtrak suppose to go that fast downhill, or do they have less restrictions since its a lighter load and its a passenger train
There were 4 tracks, and one was removed in 1981, and it doesnt say. Why was it removed?
BNSF ex-BN nee-CB&Q has a horseshoe curve in northwestern Nebraska I think it about the same size as this one
I went there last weekend
I have been there before!
What is the little brick building by the tracks used for?
I sure wish Norfolk Southern painted their diesels blue and white like Conrail.
How many trains pass the curve in a day?
There is only 3 tracks on horseshoe curve.. the 4th track was removed in the 80's.
are there electrified railways in the USA?
Horseshoe curve was so important in
moving troops and supplies during WWII that the Nazis had plans to try and blow it
up but were never able to put their
plot into operation.
Is the first train one of those garbage trains?
Was this shot in western Pennsylvania? If so where exactly?
wheres the Amtrak train?? i never saw it
Location is near Altoona, Pennsylvania.
The big black thing is indeed a locomotive on display..
what kinda of containers are these?
Look at aprox 5:30. It's behind the coal train, moving downhill fast on another track.
Horseshoe curve, right outside Altoona, PA. Mike
The first train is carrying garbage containers from New York City to a landfill somewhere in the midwest.
Can\ anyone tell me about the Diesel monument I saw in this video. Thanks
Amtrak train? I saw no Amtrak train.

with garbage from New York City and heading to a landfill somewhere in the midwest.
Pennslyvania,USA
i'd like to see a high speed train pass this curve..
there are 4 trains not 3 as it is in the headline.
which is NS 65J
