- If you could hook it up to your stereo, you would not believe how good those SD's sound shoving on the rear. The best sounding helpers I ever heard in my life. Location Lilly, PA. The rear helpers exhaust starts to get darker as it approaches the signal bridge, looks like it's dying.
It doesn't get any better than this. GE's throbbing in front, EMD's screaming in back. WOW!
love the sound of th GE"s
The SD40-2 is the best locomotive ever created by EMD
One of the best locomotives of all time as well.
Facts
Best looking goes to the gp30 imo
❤❤❤❤❤
Wow those SD40s sound awesome
I love the belching exhaust trail from the rear loco.
Wow four in back, great display of power. Wonderful video thanks for posting.
Good grief!!!!...listen to the absolute pure power of those mighty EMD “40’s” roaring and shoving at the back!! 💪🇺🇸💪🇺🇸,.....with the brutality of the sound only personified by the sight of the last unit running a little rich, enabling us to witness the violence and magnificence of that exhaust note!!!.....there is truly no sound on earth better than a group of EMD Turbocharged 645e3’s screaming defiance to the tonnage they move 👌💪🇺🇸🇺🇸💪👌
Well said!!
Your opinion of course.
Great video, brother. I'm a retired 40-year locomotive engineer out of Avon, IN.
Average railfan: best train I've ever seen
Veteran: best train I've ever *heard*
There's nothing like a herd of 645's in notch 8!
A heard of 567s with no mufflers?
Listening to those 4 helper units brings back memories as a child living along the Buffalo line just North of Emporium,Pa. Watching and listening to them going past was a great sight and sound as they went further up the tracks to the Keating Summit Grade
My grandfather lived in Emporium on Sizerville Road. I remember as a kid watch Conrail trains go by his house all the time.
@@jaredklock8754 I lived up in Gardeau, where the west and east bound trains would stop before going over the Keating Summit Grade.
@@kaykayschuckersAh so between Emporium snd Port Allegany.
@@jaredklock8754 yes, between Emporium and Port Alleghany. There is a road right off of rt 155 about 7 miles north of Emporium, there is a sign saying Gardeau, take that road about a 1.5 miles on thr left hand side there is a house it was red now painted like a dark brown that's where I grew up for 11 years before moving into town in May of 81'.
@@kaykayschuckers Ok. Well if I ever get north of Emporium again I'll look for it. Don't get further north than Emporium when I go up to visit my grandfather.
That consist will never get old, its 2021 and this video still brings back the good days. Just hear those EMDs going at it!
This is my all-time favorite UA-cam video. If you've got good speakers the sound is incredible. Those radiator fans howling around that curve at the end are just great.
Loved listening to those helper units as kid growing up in Emporium, PA. As they were about to climb the Keating Summit grade.
4 FREAKING HELPERS AT THE REAR CLIMBING THE WEST SLOPE BITING INTO THE RAILS AND RAISING HOLY HELL MOVING COAL EAST TO ALTOONA!!! UNFORGETTABLY INDELIBLE.
❤❤❤❤❤
Great sounds from the front and rear. The best of both worlds!!
Yah that is pretty impressive power. They give a very authoritative note as they push all 10,000 tons. Sweet music!
Supertouring. yours is still the best. That deep and loud roar from about 2:30 on is breathtaking. Best Wishes!
Yup, 40s in notch 8 in the mountians!! You can't beat it!!
Sounds more like notch 7. I dont even know if they go that high too much. Do they?
Yeah, they go up to 8
Still the best! When the video gets to 2:30, turn up the speakers until the end. The deep and loud roar sound of the 4 SD-40's is awesome and fantastic.
Best Conrail Video Ever👍! All of the units sound great on this train. The smoke adds to the scene for sure. Spectacular!!!
DID SOMEONE CALL FOR BIG BLUE?
The smoker on the end was still running full bore. Turbo's probably getting clogged on it, but you could still pull half a small town with it.
Ahh the memories… reminds me when CR started running the Strawberry Ridge coal down the Nittany & Bald Eagle in the 90’s. Wish they still ram them now. Nothing like the chest throb from ten feet away from those Dash 2’s screaming in run 8 at about 5mph. Sometimes less and often a stall. Beat ‘em to death and they didn’t die! 👍
This never gets old..
That one coal train . The. Sounds of.railroading. The hoppers flanges hunging the curve the traction motors humming and the diesels knotted out for power. Thats cool video. I worked with Conrail passenger service. Out of. GCT.
Still the best sounding locomotive video on youtube, who is still watching in 2022?
ahhh, when Conrail was still Conrail, awesome vid!!!
Very nice video! Those SD40s sound great!
Truly awesome, those SD40-2s sounded so mean, notch 8💪🏼. Saw plenty of them Conrail units pulling coal drags through Charleroi, PA!
I agree bro!!! some of the best EMD's I've ever heard!!! gotta love the smoke too. I would give it 10 stars if I could. great catch man!!!! My girl is getting pissed because I got it at max volume, haha
I worked on the railroads car lot for a short period during the late 1990s, and I lived the sound of these engines especially at throttle eight pulling a hill with a string of loaded cars, also the EMD SD45-2.
The old PRR position light signals on the bridge are a nice touch as well.
Wow, no kidding, best stuff ive heard ever for helpers...nothing beats an old SD lashup, power to the max, thanks for sharing another video of conrails glory days
Four SD40-2's pushing a heavy coal drag up grade,
It just doesn't get any better than that !!
OMG !!! That gave me goose bumps. Would've been perfect if EMD was on the head end also. Thanks !
Canadian Pacific is still using SD40-2's on road trains around the Twin Cities but they're always mixed in with AC4400's. I wish they'd have a pure dash-2 set: I'd chase it till my gas tank went empty. The 645e3 is still the best sounding engine ever and this clip proves it. That end dash-2 is just pushing a little oil beyond a worn ring and is far from being on its last legs.
This is what I LOVE about railfanning The sound of about 18 thousand horses just the pushers..."EARTHLY POWER " Thanks for sharing!🤟🤟
I miss the days of Conrail!
Your video of the screaming SD60 on the lead is amazing, I love it when they howl like that.
Love that roar. Conrail is awesome! Thanks for posting this!
yea i agree
Zach Bloomquist....... Nah!.... EMD's In Notch 8, is what's Awesome!! ; )
Sweet sounds of 4 SD40-2s, in stereo.
this helpers sound is so amazing impressive EMD'S !
Two C40-8Ws leading and 4 SD40-2s on the rear pushing-best of both worlds!
Seen a rarity the other day. Ex conrail D8 in NS paint leading EB CSX ethanol over the P&LE bridge in monaca. RS3L still crisp
6376 is just belching exhaust. Love it
I agree! If you like the sound of SD40-2s,
check out "Push for the pass" vol. I and II.
They were made circa 1988 at Rogers, BC. CP rail ran a pusher terminal to assist heavy westward trains up the 2.2% grade between Rogers and Stoney creek.
Routinely CP would run 4 units on the head end,2 mid train slaves and 6 pushers. That sound of 36,000 hp in notch 8 could be heard all up and the beaver river valley. Well worth checking out!!!
The last unit probaly is suffering a slight turbo failure. It is getting a bit of engine oil making the smoke black
They are running. Very nice. Man I love EMD's, 40-2s could pull down a mountain all day long🇺🇸
Wow. About as dramatic as it gets! Wish I was there.
NO CLICKBAIT FOR SURE. WHAT A SOUND !!!!
You are sooo right! Those helpers sound beautiful!
I actually miss Conrail to cuz blue is my favorite colorand not only that Norfolk Southern in Conrail where my two favorite railroad companies back in the day
The 645E, king of all prime movers. Awesome video, this really brings back memories. Long live big blue!
The best train video on youtube???
jiminyhopkins yep
Absolutely! Sound is incredible.
Well, I don't know about that but you sure can't beat the sound.
Funny how the lead GE unit is exhausting heavy
and the last EMD unit also.
Super video!! I'm A EMD LOVER with there 2 stroke.
Awesome audio!! Sorta reminded me of what four WC SD45s sounded like working up grade. Long live the SD40-2!!
🎶…Baby, baby! I hear a symphony…🎶
The epitome of rail life!! Not too much compares...
Even though I wasn't born and that time I've seen Conroe before I'm 15 but in Haywood county (Canton) North Carolina I lived near the paper mill in Norfolk Southern used to bring in a whole bunch of different engines and everyday I would either see Santa Fe Burlington northern Burlington northern Santa Fe Conrail or Wabash but now since Blue Ridge Southern owns the rail line you don't see any of them are jet engines anymore
Love the sound of SD40-2s on a hard push!
Great sound! Love those 2-strokes.
those sd40-2s sound so sweet .sd40-2s are the best !!!
The rumble of those C40-8Ws is awesome too, but I think the SD40s won.
that is the best sound of any train video i have ever heard. amazing.
Man that is NICE!!! Conrail is comin back!
A spectacular train. Four SD-40's kickin' ass. Thanks for posting!
Great vid SuperT,a four pack of SD40-2's in melt down, nothing better!
Wide Open = Long Live CONRAIL !!!!
That last engine was gettin some work ; )
Definitely gonna need to stop at the fuel pad after this run
I think the last helper unit is a GE in disguise, the way it's smoking.
Great audio 😁
Damn, I put that on my loudspeakers I use for DJing, turned the bass up, and not even at half power, it sounds like a real one.
Heat waves rising on the 4 SD-40-2's and roaring until they disappear behind the trees!
That last pusher puffing the smoke might need injectors cleaned or rebuilt or need turbo work done. The others are running clean and sounding good!
With every railroad that had SD40's and SD40-2's, the easiest way to tell the two apart is to look at the trucks. 40's have Flexicoil C trucks while -2's have HTC (High Traction C type). Every railroad except Conrail, which didn't trust the HTC's and special ordered all of their 40-2's with the older style Flexicoil C's. Other spotting features of Conrail -2's: bigger front and rear porches (front & rear walkway decks), different shaped dynamic brake housing, corrugated radiator intake
boy were those helper (banking ) engines throbbing. so were the gevos on point.
Not GEVO's in front. GE C40-8W's with 7FDL engines.
nice catch
wow 6376 looks like it's working harder than the other 3 helpers
Conrail on the ex PRR was a class act. Today's Norfolk Southern on these same tracks doesn't come close.
Notch 8 Screaming Hell
I FREAKIN LOVE THE SOUND OF THOSE SD40-2
jOB WELL DONE
AG
So this is why we railfan
Lily, PA nice
thanks for having amazing footage like this hard to come by nice job!!!
i DO have my 'puter run through a big amp with big speakers and this DOES sound good! real good! thanks!
Still watching in 2023
Great sound! Fav'ed!
Really, it interesting! Great the video of Conrail, Conrail Lives and Conrail Helpers, man
wow!!! those helpers sound graet.i love sd40-2s
I miss that Conrail "Dress Blue". Didn't they have 1 of the most attractive liveries?
I agree with the video title. These are by far the best sounding SD40-2s ever. I like contrast between the higher-pitched whine and the deep rumble of the 645. It's too bad the 40s aren't out in numbers like they used to be.
Those GE units have a nice deep sound, but, there is nothing like four GM units running full bore, working against a heavy load (well maybe six). Can you imagine living in one of those track side houses!!!!
the houses may are made with antivibrators(dampers)materials in his basements.
WOW i love the sound of all of those conrails at N8 i love the sound of 645 prime movers
Do any engineer or brakeman would sit on conrail locos helper or no one sit on conrail locos helper? And WOW Conrail is live still! They no kidding, man! Nice the video man
awesome video! ans youre right, those SD's sound incredible! I never get to see that kinda power down where i live, just GE's and the little EMD's (GP-38's)
Now that is what we like to call a TRAIN!
Amazing. Video.
Excellent video; nice and steady. Obviously you used a tripod. I also love the way you handle the telephoto. Those 4 SD-40-2 helpers sure do sound great. No, smokey isn't dying. This much smoke from an EMD is unusual, but not unheard of.
STILL BADASS !!!
cool sound the Emd power allways has a nice sound and power as well.
The GM's were doin' all the work!!!!!!!!
Ghosts of the PRR all over this video!!
imagine living there....talk about shaking the house...my aunt lives in the blue green house directly behind you.
Those sd40-2 are pushing hard
