    We have Bacala salad on Christmas Eve along with fried Smelt, stuffed squid, mussels, fried calamari, clam sauce and scallops.... penne and linguini meatballs, sausages, a roast beef, garden salad, Italian loafs! Deserts are too much to list, lots of alcohol and espresso w/ Sambuca at 1AM! It’s the best night of the whole year!

    Thanks for posting Laura. I'm not Italian but I love octopus salad! My aunt boils the octopus like you do but she removes the outer layer of skin so that all you see is the white part. She makes a similar salad but adds bell peppers and onions. It's so good!

    Octopus is a Christmas Eve tradition in Portugal as well. We usually boil it for Christmas Eve, then turn the leftovers into a salad for Christmas Day.

    Hi! I'm originally from Long Island and many of us Italian- Americans eat Octopus Salad on X-mas Eve. I love it so much! I usually put oregano in mine. We have a fish market near my house that sells fresh octopus only during x-mas. The line for all the seafood is about 1 hour wait on X-mas eve!

    You need to let it thaw... otherwise it's gonna be too tough. Let it thaw for an hour until it's nice and soft then boil some water and insert the octopus into the water for a few seconds, remove it for a few seconds, then repeat the process 3 times so the skin toughens up and the inside will be nice and tender. I like to put in some balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar, lemon slices and a little garlic as well so the Octopus is tangy when it comes out.
    You can season it however you want really, I think it tastes good inside a Greek Salad with Feta and Olives but I marinate it in Olive Oil for a few hours at least before putting it in :)

      @chaoticpicks5245 8 років тому +1

      +Anastasia Dreiser-Ignatieff Not true. It is actually better to cook it with no water in a frozen state. It only becomes tough and chewy if you over cook it.

      I agree most chefs never boil the octopus. The temperature of the water should never be over 200 degree farenheit this prevents the meat from getting rubbery.

    Octupus is very popular in Malta as well. We love it. And for those who are squeemish, I can tell you this...if you perhaps like shrimp, or crab perhaps...you will LOVE octopus. DON'T BE AFRAID! It's sweet, firm, and NOT fishy AT ALL! Try it!! Laura's recipe is simple, fresh, and very healthy!

    I live in Malta, and we have fresh octopus all the time. HOWEVER, many Nanna's (Nonna's) tell me that freezing the octopus is actually BETTER as it kinda tenderizes it more. LOL I dunno - but I do what they say, and it's still good. NOTHING wrong with freshly frozen octopus!
