LOL totally agree with your "get fucked" sentiment about companies making you give an email to see what they sell. Such a peeve of mine too!
I always laugh when she says that!
Usually when companies like these say that they are less expensive than traditional grocery shopping, they go by the amount of food needed to make a portion of their recipes. So they'll say "Hey, our recipe costs 20$/points, and it would cost 40$ to get the same stuff at a grocery store!" without taking into account that you could make 3 times the quantity with good ol' groceries.
it is for the people that know they are not going to use the rest and it will go bad. also the preplanned recipes are important I know I have bought stuff from the grocery store and just let the food go bad in my fridge.
I work at Kroger and the other day a customer came to the desk and asked if she could leave a review of a brand. She wrote a complaint about how she's disappointed in Kroger for carrying a vulgar brand called Bitchin' when its a "family friendly" store? She asked me if I had heard any other complaints, but I just told her we're aware of it and we all actually find it pretty funny.
bitchin' sauce is, well, bitchin'. that chipotle flavored shits the bomb.
tell her to go tell her cult leader about it
I think the "save $22+" thing is actually based upon the theory that on average, people lose $22+ worth of wasted groceries that expire, go unused, or go bad. So there philosophy is that with them, every ingredient is used and no money is wasted.
At least this is the marketing that I got when i was trying a similar company.
I liked the idea of it; not having to shop, not having to think of recipes, trying new foods, etc. But it was way out of my budget unfortunately.
Our family (parents + 5 yo + 10 yo) have tried hungry root and purple carrot. The kids preferred hungry root but it got old for the parents fairly quickly. Purple Carrot is much fancier, but more work -- and the 5 yo won't eat most of the meals.
Chiming in as a long time vegan (since 1997!) who is also on UA-cam -- albeit a much different niche.
That kale salad just like that is how I always eat it. Just chop /shred everything really small then as dressing I just use guac, salsa and hot sauce. Perfect!
Yes, a new video! Always makes my day better :)
Thank you for everything Swayze ❤️
I’m glad you did a review, I knew you’d be honest!
I always love your recommendations! After your TJs video, I became obsessed with their protein bars. I haven’t had a better one yet.
I love your review style. I could listen to you review the phone book lol. Great work! Thank you
They’ve been following me around the internet so I’m so excited to watch!
I loved your review! Do more of these :)
Super helpful review. Definitely looking forward to Purple Carrot too. I’ve looked into these before but have been turned off by the price.
I love how you get straight to it. You're amazing. I'm not a vegan, more of a flex but I adore your content.
Great video! I have been very curious about hungryroot. Would you do a video on purple carrot? I have been very curious about them as well
I tried building a menu with hungry root, but my allergies really prevented me from having a lot of their stuff. Like I would basically just be getting all bean based meals with little variation in them. So I canceled and they sent a snippy email about me canceling before trying them, but it was a lot of money for a bunch of beans. 😅
❤
Hm, to me the variety and convenience of the recipes and general meal planning for your week is worth something though, especially to people who don't regularly cook! I always think that these types of subscription programs work best for people who find themselves relying too heavily on Uber eats or other similar services, where costs can quickly get crazy high.
It’s good for me because I’m depressed and literally spent $400 on grubhub a month
@Makai Threads there are people who don't have enough mental/physical energy to think about food or do the groceries and that the 400 bucks/month that they would overpay in a food subscription is worth, specially if you live by yourself and have a good source of income.
I had a hungry root subscription for a while, my favorites were the kale quinoa bites, the sweet potato wraps, rainbow salad mix and especially....the CHICKPEA COOKIE DOUGH! 🍪🤤
I subscribed for one month to help build a better habits. My son is extremely picky and I was struggling with dinner ideas he would eat. I was ordering out too often because I knew he would eat it. It was great for getting back into the habit of cooking and trying different things for him. The price was too high to do normally.
That colour is awesome on you BTW!
We love an honest review
First time watcher here.... LOVE YOUR VIDEO! Honest, detailed and DEFINITELY eye-opening! They sent me a coupon to try Hungryroot but I'm gonna pass...i have all the "healthy" stores near me so my fanny is jumping in my dune buggy and away i go!
Oh! I also love how your shirt matches your phone case! 😊
I had items missing too, 2 packages of the Flatbread for the beyond meatball & baby broccoli Flatbread. They gave me $10 refund plus $5 for "inconvenience"
Swayze, when you've prepared quinoa in the past, did you rinse it first? I had the problem before as well that I found quinoa real bitter and odd tasting but then I found out you're supposed to rinse it first. Did that and then it tasted delicious.
Uhh so totally off topic but love your nail polish color at 7:45!!
I had the same issue with imperfect and the price. They claim to be cheaper than the grocery store, but I found them to actually be slightly more expensive. I could imagine using them if I lived in a city with very high cost of living, but I only live in a city with moderately high cost of living so it doesn't work out. Especially if you're already buying produce based on sales and generally eating seasonally
I tried them 2 years ago. The produce always went bad too quickly. Some of the sauces tasted weird. I actually had this service at the same time as Imperfect Foods and Walmart delivery, so I would cross-reference prices of everything, and, if I could get similar products from either of those to substitute, I would always save money. So Hungryroot is definitely comparatively pricey. (Imperfect Foods also costs more than other stores, and is lower quality “leftovers,” so.)
Misfits is cheaper and more variety than Imperfect foods. After I saw that, I didn’t do imperfect again unless they sent me an amazing discount code.
Great video!
This review is amazing
Thanks for sharing!!!!!!
Natalie Matthews did a review of a few other similar services, seems like the convenience doesn't surpass the price and waste for a lot of these vegan boxes :(
To be fair, my grocery stores in southern Indiana regularly have empty shelves these last few months. Even the mock meat isle is scarce.
My favorite chocolate is Taza Mexican chocolate disc's. Vanilla. OMG! I add peanut butter and wow!
I personally would like to know how hard it is to cancel. In my experience yellow fresh is like the hardest thing to cancel. You can’t on the app and I’ve had to call and they’re fairly rude and only try to convince you to keep carrying the subscription and when you say no they’re even ruder. That’s my major gripe with these subscription services is they’re hard to cancel
completely easy, can be done right on the website with a click.
@@cynop i haven’t found that to be the case for me but thank you for being condescending. That’s also not an option in the app so it’s totally simple and easy
@@thatgirlconnor I suspect that snail only read your first line and just responded with their experience. I only skimmed and thought you were just looking for an answer and came to see the answer. I didn't realize you have previous experience until I read your response. I hope you can get canceled soon!
Abbott Butcher is at Natural Grocers here in PDX. Crazy expensive though. Like 6$(?) On sale
Can you try some other meal services? That would be awesome! I'm not vegan, but if the price is right I would def order vegan meals!
These services are aimed at rich people I think. Those that are happy to spend money to save time.
Wish I cared about barebells lol I’m still obsessed with Nugo 😍 chocolate pretzel is EVERYTHING.
We have the Vegan Chocolate Dough Barebells here in Sweden and Denmark :)
Did you ever make a video about healing your chronic back pain?
The helluva good commercials got me as a kid 👀😆
Would you ever make a video talking about the current gas prices?
I love hungry root, but the reason it is a lifesaver for us is because we live way out in the country and I have a ton of allergies. I'm able to plan out all my food for the week, I know we are eating healthy, and I'm avoiding the allergens that are EVERYWHERE. We save a twenty minute drive into town, a two hour shopping trip, and another hour drive just to get to the nearest store that sells the non dairy stuff I can have. The only store near us is a dollar general. I was miserable before we got hungry root, and now we get excited about every box that comes and we customize it from the couch. We are slowly figuring out which meals last how long in the fridge and how many leftovers for next day lunch they provide. Currently trying a $180 box every other week, supplementing with what we grab in town like almond milk and tortillas. Three adults and a child here. When we would go to Walmart it was an easy $300 spent. My fiance also has a problem in the store where he will forget we already have something and continue to purchase more and more, and my child will scream for donuts and things so that's another problem we avoid.
I live in a food desert so i feel this deeply.
If you can find it in the US, Lindt has a new brand of chocolate that's vegan. I think it's called Lindt hello vegan chocolate or smth like that. They have three flavours (in Europe) that are popcorn (red packaging), cookies & cream (blue oackaging) and salted caramel (orange packaging). The chocolate itself is soooo creamy, reminds me a lot of quality Swiss chocolate. It's made from oat milk if I remember correctly. The only downside is having to pay 3,50 euros for 100 grams of product. But it's honestly worth it. The best vegan (milk) chocolate I've ever had. But honestly I'm getting pretty tired of vegan salted caramel products (esp. chocolate), lmao. Gimme more variety!
Here in Finland Fazer has an 'oat choco' chocolate bar which is nice, but doesn't taste nearly as delicious as the Fazer blue, an actual (200g) milk chocolate bar. I'm just waiting for the day they make a vegan chocolate as creamy as Fazer blue ;_;
(Sincerely, a Finn, who thinks his country's milk chocolate is the best on the world.)
I can confirm I have found the oatmilk Lindt chocolate in the US! It sounds like the packaging is little different (I have only found salted caramel, and the packaging was light blue) but it is currently my favorite. I think I paid about $4.50 for it, which is comparable with their other products.
We use a different meal service (fresh prep), but I definitely save money on impulse buying at the grocery store. It would be cheaper to buy that recipe, but I wouldn't just buy that, I would buy other things that weren't on the shopping list.
Calm down dude lmao
I did Hungryroot when they first started. It was bagged chopped veggies and sauces. They didn't have any mock meats at the time. It was really inconsistent. I would get bags of unevenly chopped veggies and most of it was carrots.
If it's like most meal kit delivery services they will try to tempt you back intermittently with discounts, so maybe it could be once every few months.
This is my thing with these boxes... we do use imperfect foods but again I don't really think it's worth it. Just nice to try some different things
I’m using Hungryroot right now and it feels expensive af 😭 but I am so lazy and I love their sauces and cookie dough.
You should try out Veestro! I use it for lunches, all plant based.
Veestro is so expensive! 😞 Is it worth it?
I can send you the Barebell Chocolate Dough bar if you want?! I just don't know how :D IT'S THE BEST PERIODT
I forgot about Nadia G's Bitchin' Kitchen! Loved that show!
I just bought my first box. I love it. Very little cooking tasty.
... sitting on 10 ataulfo mangoes right now... look forward to this every year lol
I love aldi for good affordable produce! They have lots of vegan products now too!
Thanks!
Thank you!
I tried hungry root after I had my last baby. Some of the sauces sucked.. the meals all seemed really same-y so after 1 box I was done for a while 😬 I really like abbots butcher- I like their ingredients. It’s nice to have a break from soy protein isolate filled gardein etc 😂 I get it from wholefoods but it is pricey.
Y’all need to get good with avocados. If you buy unripe ones, they will usually ripen on the counter within 4 days. Once you can feel a bit of give when squeezing lightly (don’t shove your fingers into it), stick it in the fridge and it will be good for 3-4 days. Store leftovers with the seed in and covered in press-in-seal in an airtight container and it will be not-super-brown for the next day or two.
I couldn’t justify paying that much a week for that much food. I understand the convenience factor but I have to go to the grocery store for other things anyway.
I will say I get the Misfits produce box which is $30 (minimum) a box and they just got like snacks and a ton of other things so I like it even more now. But something like this just isn’t worth it for me.
Good review!!
To be fair, it's a ten dollar difference for a service that includes home delivery. That is probably worth it for people who live far from the grocery store and/or don't have a car and/or have trouble scheduling grocery shopping
It’s actually a 75$ difference though
Came here to say that.
@@MdoubleHBxx I hope this is a troll comment. Lol.
Tcho from San Francisco has switched their milk chocoloate to ALL vegan. Might be worth a try.
quinoa won't be bitter if you soak it overnight before cooking
As a single woman living alone and working a hybrid schedule in a big city, I personally find the quality of the food and the convenience to be worth it. If I was feeding more than myself or if I had the time to meal prep and go to the grocery store more often, I would consider cancelling my subscription.
I'm doing HungryRoot right now, all of their stuff is pretty bland, I like to compare it to air line food. I appreciate they have snacks and grocery options outside of their recipies tho. Its better than some of the other services ive used, especially how they package their products, but im looking for something new now.
Not sure which is the bigger spoiler here, the title, the NOPE, or the face in the thumbnail.
Did you actually button that shirt up wrong it’s really tripping me out. Way more than it should.
Try Trupo Treats. I randomly found them because they were partnered with a local animal sanctuary, oh man.. so good.
The rice crunch bars are currently sold out. That is the only one that sounded good to me. Are the wafer bars good?
7:55 people are always baffled when i tell them that i don't like anything mango flavoured. i definitely get that vomit-like aftertaste as well. just nasty!
Australian gamer energy powdered drink company Juicd released a mango version which has the smell of every other of their flavors (which ironically all taste like watered down Red Bull sugar free) and I won't waste $50 on it.
Was it a week’s worth of meals?
I have never been pregnant, but I also definitely will eat an entire bag of Sour patch kids in a single sitting 😋🙃
Omg ur the only other person I've heard say mango taste like throw up! I also think papaya smells and taste awful like straight puke.i cannot eat it no matter what I do.
I never heard anyone describe quinoa as bitter?
I have and I never thought about it until I was told. Yes, it's a litte bitter, but not so much that it bothers me. Apparently the bitterness goes away if you rinse the quinoa carefully before cooking it.
>>"I wish I'd screen-shotted everything I chose"
I would say Hungry Root is comparable to a specialty grocery store, but I work at a specialty grocery store where things tend to be pricey and tbh I think it's still cheaper than Hungry Root lol
That extra button is triggeringggggggg lol
How did I have to scroll this far to find this?
The vegan “cheese” cashew sauce was so so soooo amazing!
I used to get stuff from Imperfect Produce. But I stopped because the grocery store was cheaper. It was nice to get mock meats and snacks I hadn't tried. But in the end it wasn't worth it.
It also irritates me when you can't see their products without signing up. I signed up for Thrive just to see what they had. When I saw that it was all overpriced organic BS; I canceled. Maybe it's cheaper than organic from the grocery store. But I avoid organic when I can. I can't afford it and I see no benefit to organic.
Looks like I won't bother with hungry root. The points thing is deceptive. It irritates me when companies do that.
Omg I did the same thing with thrive just a few days ago. They tout having such good prices but I’m sorry… $16 for 4oz of organic cashews? No thanks. I’d rather go to publix and wait till the regular cashews go buy one get one at like $5
Maybe if you’re shopping at Erewhon … I swear Whole Foods is a bargain compared to Erewhon. 😂
Was something supposed to be funny about her mentioning box?? Did i miss something?
A vagina is also called a box lol
I loved Hungry Root! Everything was so good!
They are probably comparing themselves to Whole Foods
Your comment - get fucked
Lol, love it! Real!
Who is actually going to buy stuff if you cant see the options/price????
Hungry root ads always look soo good!
but no lol
You deleted my comment so I'm deleting you
It's gotta be all Billy g a t e s gmo crap
Wow what a surprise, they are making money off of you purchasing their services.
prechopped, hum? the big problems of the first world
You seem like you’d be fun at parties
😄😄😄
True. Lol
Time saving for working people, busy parents, handicapped people, those with muscular issues....
I spend less than $200 a year on “groceries.” And this isn’t even real food and my family wouldn’t eat most of it. What a complete waste of resources. 😢
Please share your secrets for spending so little on groceries
In the US? Wow.. good for you:)
How do you manage to spend so little? Did you mean per month? Because I am skeptical of less than $200 a year on groceries.
Lies.
$200...a year? Do you grow all your own food?
Vegans eating all these fake meat products...what's wrong with your lentils and beans 🤣🤣🤣🤣
People eat all of it 💀 people are allowed to enjoy alternatives to meat you bozo
Shame on you who knew when you give up meat you loose your soul
I believe it saves time and promotes self control, by making you eat healthy and your correct portion size or you’ll PAY literally 😅
Trying a meal kit box for the first time in April because I had a coupon as well, I feel like the only benefits I would see paying full price is you’re not wasting anything. We often buy things and since there’s only two of us stuff goes bad so having it pre portioned may be helpful
