Hi Tessie. And Good Morning from Sweden!;🇸🇪
Lets hope the snow disappear soon. Me, too, is eager to "put my fingers in the soil" and start the growing Season...It is so satisfying to see Things sprout and grow!
And I have a little question for you....
When you talk about the "Garden", do you then mean a Kitchen/Vegetable Garden?
      This confuse me a little🙂🤗
Because, for me that is a professional Landscape Architect, your whole Property is a "Garden" and not just the area where you grow vegetables and such Things. .
Anyway, I love watching your videos and to be Taught about the old days and the way of living then, (I am reslly learning a lot from them)!.So Thank You!
      🤗💖🌱🙏🏻🇸🇪

You got a lot wealthier since I first started watching you, but then again I’m a lot wealthier too. I pay for everything cash and when I run out of money wait for when I get more. I live in an old suburb with a 1945 house. Small lot. I love it.

My hubby lost his job and we had to sell our home we built. Looked into buying a trailer but they were so expensive. Instead we bought a shed and turned it into our home. I love it. We have 70 acres with my grown daughters and son in laws. We have all built homes on the land. my grandchildren love to explore and play outdoors.

In our mid 50's ,I have some major health issues that have prevented me from working well, I was watching your channel and showed my husband how you live. We moved 3 hours away from the city to a small town bought an older mobile home it has a roof over and has been protected from the elements for the most part. We are slowly repairing what needs it and I am starting my garden soon. Thank you for the inspiration to change even when your set in your ways. God Bless

I would take a newer one any day over an older mobile home. The new standards are exponentially better than the old ones. More energy efficient better windows thicker wood and metal construction . Siding and roof material are longer lasting and most importantly the new ones are made with better fire resistant material.

@@lovelife7343 --that's true. Standards have risen so high that many mobile homes are made even better than houses. That's one reason they cost so much more. They have to be able to withstand all sorts of wind levels and snow loads by law now. (I watch all sorts of mobile home sales videos here at YT.)

I wanted to share with you an experience that I have had with keeping deer from eating my plants, I noticed they didn’t bother some of the plants, but did bother others of the same kind, the difference was gravel. So I put gravel around the plants being eaten, and the plants were no longer bothered, I was so surprised! I hope this helps you out too !

We love our woodstove. Here in southeast Iowa, we can get some pretty cold winters. There is an expense to it though. My husband and I built a woodshed together last summer. It's wonderful! It's 10'x16' and we stack the wood to 1 foot from the rafters. It actually holds 1 1/2 to 2 years of wood. We have a log splitter and chain saws. The trees have been free for the taking. We have had a problem with Ash trees dying here in Iowa. Our home is a 1200 sq ft ranch so the medium sized woodstove does an amazing job of heating the house. March 2022 - March 2023 we only used 270 gallons of propane (our kitchen stove/oven, canning kitchen stove and our water heater also use propane)! We had our 1000-gallon propane tank topped off last March. I just checked our tank, and we are at 60% (still hasn't had any propane added since March of 2023!)
We have our wood cut for next year (we always stay one year ahead on our wood, so it is plenty dry). I also keep a cast iron pot full of water on the top of our woodstove. We do not have to run a humidifier then. I also dry our clothes in front of it during the winter. I run a box fan to push the warm air down the hall to the bedrooms. Many meals have been cooked on the woodstove and bread is rising every week in front of it. I want to add an oven to the woodstove next!
I grew up with a woodstove, so I know the different woods and how hot they burn. Be sure to buy a temperature gage to sit on the top of the woodstove. That will help keep you from overheating it and causing a chimney fire. Plus, pine creates a lot of creosote so stay away from it. So happy for you, my friend! You're going to love it!! So little house on the prairie!😉

Thanks Tessie for your homestead tour. I really enjoyed seeing your gem of a place. It's not what you have but rather what you do with what you have. I am 66 years old and at 65 I downsized to get out of debt. The move was very exhausting and the home was a gut remodel. I have been here 18 months and I have invested wisely in this place. I am setting out fruit bushes and trees this week and am praying for God to bless my plantings. The remodel is very slow...me, myself and I doing the work. But I just pray everyday for energy and strength to get things done. Am putting up a portable green house next week by myself. Trying to start perma gardening this year. It's a lot, but God will help you accomplish more than you ever thought possible. Staying out of debt is God's will for us all. I want to encourage others that he will help you, step out in faith!

Yes, gathering the wood is laborious. It always eats our wood so fast. 😊

    • @CynthiaLundquist-oi2cu
      @CynthiaLundquist-oi2cu 6 місяців тому +1

Burning wood is hard work. We live in an area where there is basically 7-8 months of heating our home with wood. We cut the wood, split the wood, pile the wood in a shed, haul it into the house into the wood box, and feed the fire. You are handling that wood 4-5 times to heat your home. A good chimney is a must and has to be cleaned many times during the burning season to prevent creosote buildup and a chimney fire. We have our own land where we cut the firewood from windfall trees...20 acres of woods. If you have to buy the firewood and have it delivered your cost savings goes way down. It seems cozy and romantic and so old-fashioned, but be prepared for the hard work that goes along with it and if you have to buy your wood the cost is sometimes prohibitive. Speaking from 40 years of experience heating our home with wood.

That’s what I did also Tessie, I live in a mobile home on .68 of a acre, my garden is 100 ft x 100 ft I also set my place up like the Robinsons, garden and chickens in back and fruit trees in the front. I raise my meat chickens in a 10’x28’ leanto that I put electrical into the building . I have a garden shed which I want to swap out with a green house for when I will have time to grow my veggie starts instead of buying them . My hubby has a 2 car garage and a man cave . Once I can buy the lot on each side of me I hope to have a 2 dwarf Nubian Nannie’s . Even though I have a 100 x 100 garden I still have room to expand but my job is 10-12 hr days and I cant handle a bigger one but hope when I retire I can increase it by 5 more raised beds to the 8 I have along with 48 mineral tubs and 30 grow bags. Anyone who says you can’t grow enough to sustain yourself … well 1. You grow up on trellis 2. You can and dehydrate what you can’t finish fresh every day, 3. Grow what you eat and a lot of it! I live in Texas so I grow 10 out of 12 months , have a lake a mile away to fish out of, and I raise my meat chickens , am I totally self reliant? No but the savings I create far out weighs and tired and sore I feel lol and it’s so rewarding. Plus I know what went into the food I put on my table. I would never had tried any of this had it not been for you Tessie sounding off against someone saying you can’t feed yourself on 1 acre and you showed all you was doing and I knew I could also.

From the title I thought you had moved!! LOL!😂 Very nice homestead. We have a 1500 sq Ft concrete block home on 14 Acres. However I am not much of a farmer. Hubby is a truck driver, he’s on the road a lot. I had a beautiful Hibiscus in the front yard. The winter and the deer killed it. 🤦🏻‍♀️

More snow, Tessie? I'm trying not to envy you! I love snow and none has fallen here.
This has been a fun overview of the history of your homestead development. Can't wait to see what you and you hubby do with it this year.
Being able to truthfully say we love our homes, in spite of some things we don't have that are now in most houses, is a real blessing. Yesterday, my little grandson suddenly declared he would not ever want to move to Windsor or Buckingham Palace because our little home is better than a castle or palace. I am so happy that he is content😊.

We are retired & I prayed for a place for us....He opened the door for an older RV with 3 slides & a lot to put it on. We paid it all off. We have 2 outbuildings. One is my hubby's tool shed & the other had a rotting floor. It wasn't built correctly, so he had to remove the railroad ties & rebuild the floor & 2 walls. It took 5 years, but he now has his own man cave. I call it Bob's house. Does your hubby have his own mancave?❤❤❤

You’ve done wonders with your property. Fortunately you have a good chunk of land but I do want to assure others that you can always improve, no matter how little you have. Tessie has the gumption to get it all done but so can you! We all need to reassess our resources and see how much better we can use them in these very challenging times.

I downzided when I moved to Florida. 13 rooms to 5. 3 car garage to carport. Big garden to containers. I love it. At 74 painting 5.5 acres was getting to be too much. I should have downsized earlier. I still grow much of what I need.
