  • The Sammy left me stranded so I pushed it home, that was exciting. Then troubleshooting kinda went sideways, but we got her fixed, DIY style.

    Adam, please!
    Jumper cables …
    1. Minus at the donator battery to a large naked chassis surface, engine lift eye is a good option. Wait a few seconds to get both vehicles at the same static electricity level.
    2. Plus/positive from the sonar vehicle to the plus/positive of the receiving vehicle. Do NOT connect donor and receiver to battery negatives.
    3. Wait a few seconds to allow the currents to even out.
    4. Start the receiving engine.
    5. Remove cables in reverse order.
5.1 Remove receiver positive, then donor positive.
5.2 Remove receiver negative, then donor negative.
    Why this?
Because this method eliminates any sparks that might ignite fumes/gas evaporated from the dead battery. Igniting that gas might cause a fatal explosion.

I'm pretty sure I hooked up to the Sammy first. My Jeep battery is brand new. I've heard that they can produce hydrogen but If a spark is gonna occur its gonna be on the last cable you hook up. I guess I've hooked to so many batteries doing stereos and alarms I don't see it being that dangerous. If there's any draw in the vehicle you get a spark just hooking up you cars own cables, what protects you then? Im not saying it cant happen, I'm sure it does in rare cases when a battery is off gassing and the stoichiometric ratio is perfect. Now you got me curious how often that happens. I've never seen it. Also we used to get 12v alarm batteries by the pallet, with 15k accounts we prob changed 50 batteries a day between all of us, and those sit in a half a square foot metal box that you'd think would trap those gasses. They're only 7AH but more than capable of sparking. Seen some pretty bad ones too. They'll swell up like a football lol. But regardless, you're right, I should be a better example so I'll try to remember from now on.

    Rear lights …
As you know I have a Gen4 Jimny.
I highly recommend anyone to upgrade the crappy drone and rear halogens (indicators, position/brake, and reverse bulbs) to GTR2 LED bulbs from HeadlightRevolution. (No affiliation.)
The difference is nothing but massive!

    The EGR …
Where I live we don’t have annual checkups, MOT’s. So when my wife’s 🖕 2004 Explorer showed up with igniting issues I plugged the EGR and added the best spark plugs we could afford - problem solved. It still runs like a newborn infant.

When I plug the vacuum line going to the egr, the idle drops now, because it used to connect a nipple that had positive pressure, not sure if it was exhaust gas cuz it wasn't very hot. Anyways, before one was pushing and the other pulling, now that it's blocked off it doesn't push, so the vacuum is sucking against a wall and it drops the idle.

I didn't want to comment before becuase i'm not that experineced, but i had an issue with mine long time ago, and the behavior was more or less the same, the car had a hiccup every time it got started... what i discovered was that in my case, the issue was because 1 of the spark cables was broken, then thing is that i noticed it after i spent like 3 days looking all over the engine.
so, it makes sense if it's the coil, can't wait for the next chapter to see if your issue solved 🤞

    • @FixLife119
      @FixLife119  2 місяці тому

It runs again with the new coil, still rough at idle until it warms up. Went to mess with it last night and the carb was dripping. I assumed it was gas but then smelled it and it was coolant, dripping right off the throttle linkage, not even sure how that's possible but I think I narrowed it down to a bad choke diaphragm (which was just replaced). We'll see. Thanks for the comment, hope you're doing well!

Sparks at the wrong location …
Some time ago I think I told you about the German guy who made a PhD professor on vehicle electricity.
He basically was electrical connection isn’t good enough. But how much of it you have is.
    - To my understanding he used an older Merc C-Class as an example. I.e., lots of electronics failing after less than 15 years, all due to copper corrosion in the connectors.

I just checked it after installing the coil. It's right around 12°. I believe stock wants 10° then 1 ° additional for every 2k ft elevation, so I should be at 11 but the higher I go the better she runs. I did a video on it a little while back.

My fascination is that there are still Samurai enthusiasts like you who cares so much for this car that they restore and pamper these vehicles as if they were their babies.
-Not many other car brands or models have a similar fan base.
As Suzuki Cars left USA in the early 1990’s and you guys can’t buy the later models, like Gen3 or Gen4, you’re stuck with Gen2. As you are, it’s a perfect storm for the ones who truly like these little ones.
Over time some cars creates a fan base, the Samurai is one of them. And every time I see one of these enthusiasts they bring a smile to my heart for their passion, interest, dedication.
