- Driving Downtown - Washington District of Columbia USA - Episode 24.
Starting Point: 16th Street - goo.gl/maps/mD7naSVWX5r .
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as "Washington", "the District", or simply "D.C.", is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, one of the United States' founding fathers and the leader of the American Continental Army who won the Revolutionary War, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6 million, the sixth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.
The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.
A locally elected mayor and a 13‑member council have governed the District since 1973. However, the Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. D.C. residents elect a non-voting, at-large congressional delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, but the District has no representation in the U.S. Senate. The District receives three electoral votes in presidential elections as permitted by the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961.
Tourism
Tourism is Washington's second largest industry. Approximately 18.9 million visitors contributed an estimated $4.8 billion to the local economy in 2012.[128] The District also hosts nearly 200 foreign embassies and international organizations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organization of American States, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Pan American Health Organization. In 2008, the foreign diplomatic corps in Washington employed about 10,000 people and contributed an estimated $400 million annually to the local economy.[81]
The District has growing industries not directly related to government, especially in the areas of education, finance, public policy, and scientific research. Georgetown University, George Washington University, Washington Hospital Center, Children's National Medical Center and Howard University are the top five non-government-related employers in the city as of 2009.[129] According to statistics compiled in 2011, four of the largest 500 companies in the country were headquartered in the District.[130]
Sports
Washington is one of 12 cities in the United States with teams from all four major professional men's sports and is home to one major professional women's team. The Washington Wizards (National Basketball Association), the Washington Capitals (National Hockey League), and the Washington Mystics (Women's National Basketball Association), play at the Verizon Center in Chinatown. Nationals Park, which opened in Southeast D.C. in 2008, is home to the Washington Nationals (Major League Baseball). D.C. United (Major League Soccer) plays at RFK Stadium. The Washington Redskins (National Football League) play at nearby FedExField in Landover, Maryland.

i badly wanna visit here ..can u help me visit there .
Wow, now i believe my friend that said DC was a beautiful place, it is!
vary..good..now...ol...daibeg...us
In my opinion, D.C. truly is one of the prettiest U.S. cities
It's hot asf during the summer
@@jordan12118 that's good
@@jordan12118 lmao you think dc gets hot in summer try living in Florida
@@robertbonds2966 suicidality hot. The humidity is horrendous.
@@xavierdomenico Honestly I'd elect the heat in DC is just as bad if not worse because in Florida cool air comes off the ocean and gulf to cool it. Also here in DC things are built to be warmer for the cold winters so it can get minerally hot indoors sometimes.
It's interesting how different US cities can be from each other, I bet it's what to expect of such a large country. Greetings from Russia
Redhead Russkie
Does America seem very different from Russia?
Greatings from the U.S!
Yup All are different some vey different
Thank you. I want to go to St. Petersburg so bad!
In italy every city is drastically different than the other even at like 50kms
@@issac9930 come and check
I love DC being a low rise city. It is unique and wonderful amongst American cities because of this.
terence sommer Phoenix and San Jose are the same way.
Men god blles you for vídeo see in Brazil thanks mor mor vídeos
What is low rise?
@@Jj-ke3ug no super tall buildings because of height restrictions in the capital. So no major skyline
The more boring city of the world
Lived in the DMV for 3 years and it will always hold a special place in my heart
Yeah I used to live in the DMV too
The density is amazing.
Density??? DENSITY!!!????!!!!! Try living in the SF Bay Area. When I was 19 I took a Greyhound bus across the country to South Carolina (Parris Island, where my best friend's big sister was living with her Marine Corps hubby who was stationed there) and we Bay Area babes were astounded at how sparsely populated the country was. We had been taught at Crestmoor High, San Bruno, CA, that the entire nation was packed like sardines coast-to-coast. I kid you not. It gave me a great deal of peace to discover it wasn't....(I had been lead to believe that even as a nursery school-aged child. It explains why kids raised in California are so very screwed up, and we tend to keep spreading it)
(btw, if you are interested in what South Carolina was like back then, watch "The Great Santini" which was shot there a couple of weeks after we left. My BF's older sister's Marine Corps DI is in that film during the funeral scene. He's the guy with the large nose, holding the flag over Santini's casket. Red-haired and freckled.)
I really love washington DC. 🇺🇸
Do you live there? I'm visiting from N.C. for my first time next week. Definitely excited about it. Is the traffic there a nightmare as people claim? I have no idea what to expect.
Yes, Jason, the traffic around D.C is a nightmare. Have fun as it is a beautiful city. Parking is a premium and restricted in places. Make sure you don't get towed.
Just went there today. The sights are awesome and my children loved it. Traffic was indeed a nightmare lol. Man, people really love using their horns there too!
Enjoy with your family young man. It is a beautiful city and she makes me so proud to be American despite our frustration with the government. The power is palpable.
horns? Have you been to New York City?
I drive in DC all the time for work, I really enjoyed watching this.
A truly beautiful city, I enjoyed living there for 18 years, thanks for sharing.
Love DC! Glad you liked the video :)
How awesome. A fantastic trip and view of Washington D. C. Love it. I may never get there so this was indeed a treat. Thank you for sharing with us. Safe travels ahead. God bless.
Wow, fascinating! The whole city, the streets, the trees, cars, atmosphere... are all beautiful, and perfect. I love this country.
Washington is a favorite place to spend time. Casually riding around the city on a bike is an excellent way to see it!!
Whashington is a very beautiful city! Looks like Paris!
Someone mentioned this is due to the height restrictions? I love it! One of my favorite cities :)
Height restrictions! I've got it!
@@jefersonvasco78 Really?
As an Indian, that's the type of city which I like. These type of buildings are much better than cities which have skylines. This is the best form of development of a particular city in the whole US. I will visit DC one day.
Love the height restriction. Makes the city look more livable.
Interesting. Ill have to read more into the subject. Thanks for commenting!
exactly same as San Francisco but sf has a little no height restriction in few areas
it look kide of boring.
@@Aroncare downtown is where all the govt buildings are so it seems a bit bland but the city around the university campuses are lively.
Nah, it makes it look boring, small, undevelope. And less housing means higher prices so its harder to live there. Not to mention people need to travel more distance because new housing is built far away from the downtown.
One thing I like about Washington DC other than any other Country’s capital is the Height restrictions of the buildings it brought the Important stuff more attention.
This city is more well planned than the other U. S cities
So clean fantastique city
I like it very much. Sometimes I would like to live in America. LAS-VEGAS is Great!
Григорий Чукарин Wtf? Out of all the places, Vegas? Lol
Why Vegas dude?
Vegas more tourist but i like New York

I love living here. I get to see this beautiful city everyday 😍
I ❤ Washington DC

The architecture reminds me of Paris!
It's supposed to. The French planner that laid it out intended it to be like Paris.
gacaptain .Wow That's interesting

C'est très beau Washington,ça me donne envie d'aller visiter ,je suis surprise ,j'aime beaucoup, merci pour les images et le partage
lisa 0000 c'est une très belle capitale, j'ai grandi là-bas et je connais très bien les États-Unis.
Way cleaner than New York.
I realised that Washington D.C. has some similarities with Paris:
National Mall = Champ de Mars;
National Cathedral = Cathedral of Notre Dame;
Washington Monument = Luxor Obelisk;
jeferson vasco Yes,, that’s because Washington D.C. was designed by the person who designed Paris, his name is L’enfant. There is a plaza named after him in the dc area.
Itsjustdrakeee That’s an interesting name because L’enfant is French for “the child”
@@calebcaudill4367 and?
@@drake2631 you got it!
Washington DC and Paris are officially sister cities!
Exactly I remembered that because I used to live in the DMV area
your videos are really cool... an experience of architecture, urbanism, flow, sound.
Love you Washington DC.
Even though a concrete jungle, plenty of trees. :)
I like that there are trees everywhere!
I was stuck at the D.C. airport years ago, unfortunately I didn't have time to look around, now that I seen your video, I would love to see as much as I can, not during the Summer, more like Spring or Fall...I just love American History so I know I'll see a lot of it, thanks for this video! 😁😊💗
I've never been to Washington DC. Hope to visit there soon!
It's nice there
It's beautiful, where are you from?
@@blackwood1064 from Seoul, South Korea. 🇰🇷
@@top_green Seoul is a beautiful capital too but Korean people are overworking so much and that's not good for the mind
Great job. Bravo. Keep it up. Regards from Bulgaria - Sofia.
I haven't even gone through half the video, and I already like it. You see, I lived and worked in DC. And my free time was drawing with engineering skill the iconic buildings there . All the important ones have been drawn except the old executive office building. Thanks. But in this video, even the less important buildings are now mine to draw, thanks again.
The best part about DC street scape is the relatively low buildings.
Agreed. If I remember correctly, back in the day, there was an air/ building accident resulting in a senator's wife getting a law passed that made it impossible to build any structure higher than 300 feet in the D.C. area. I really need to take my hat off to her.
I stay in DC!!! Born and raised!!!
hey Ogazition
😉
mee too. DC Girl till I die ♥
God blles you Noelle
@@mrknowmyself It's definitely expensive to live here, as is any major american city I think
This is relaxing
yes
The roads are much bigger than Paris’s and London’s much more bigger, and they have Bike lanes too?!
And no more traffic
Tarobrob: Washington cannot be compared to Amsterdam or Copenhagen, but in recent years Washington has added many bicycle lanes on some downtown streets, and also has many "bike share" locations where people can borrow or rent bicycles for the day.
Try Buenos Aires.
Like they say in Washington "You don;'t know, and you don't want to know" !
I lived in Virginia from 1966 to 1975. In D.C. I used to see pedestrian signals that flashed the word "WALK" on and off.
Yes, and now the signals display (count-down) the seconds of time remaining before the red-light will change. The signs in metrorail stations also display (show) how many minutes before the next train arrives.
Washington was designed in replica of Paris, France and all buildings must be shorter than the monument..... DC maybe a small city but it has a very large business district, with shops, stores and restaurants. Plus it's a party hub, with having more party spots than any other American city, except New York.
Most notably is Georgetown, Navy Yard, H Street corridor, U Street, M Street, New York Avenue, Connecticut Avenue, Wisconsin Avenue, Georgia Avenue, Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan and Chinatown..... Each of these spot have a total different crowd from the other.....🤔
View Master DC isn't that small off a city with nearly 700k residents and over 5 million in the metropolitan area...10 million when combined with Baltimore
The Common People DC is a small city Sir. The metropolitan population isn't the city's population. But rather the Television market areas and Statistical data combined areas of Northern Virginia and including Montgomery, PG, Howard Counties along with Baltimore together is a combine 8 Million people.
Remember its a combine population to quantify a television market and not the actual city average..... So please dont get it confuse sir....
New York city has a city population of 9 million but its television market combined statistical area is 20 million from New Jersey to Connecticut and beyond....🤔
The lines between say Washington D.C. and Silver Spring Maryland are invisible. By your logic, Atlanta is a small city about the size of Wichita Ks. It has something like 380,000 people . That number is relevant for local government policy, etc. If you ask someone from Silver Spring where they are from, they will likely say Washington. Europe is no different. The population of Paris is about 2.5 million. The Paris region adds another 10 million or so. The suburbs of any great city would be nothing without the core urban heart. The television market only supports my argument that cities are defined by the entire urban conglomeration. Are you from the DC area ? It now has a combined population of 6 million, and runs into Baltimore ( like DFW) for a grand total of 9 million. And it shows. My office overlooks the back of Union Station and when I look out my window I see dozens of Amtrak and metro trains going in and out. I find your argument pedantic.
exactly same as San Francisco but sf has a little no height restriction in few areas
I’ve been there it’s a huge city
Hey Man you got a Awesome Channel going on. keep up the good work bro. Also do you have Cleveland and Cincinnati, Pittsburg in your future plans maybe?

Another place for a week end trip.
You will have to come back often to see everything that Washington, DC has to offer.
I love this area the DMV.
it looks great I would love to visit it some day
I wish I will go there. It looks lovely.
Is it raw 4k video quality or edited through a special programm? Also, is it 25 fps or 30?
popular destination , nice sunny days
Very nice town, more European than American. Broad streets like Paris. I visited DC in 1978 and stayed in Alexandria, a beautiful town just south of DC.
Washington DC looks similiar to a European styled city, but in my opinion even better. Not as crowded :P
Then the rest of America's cities are filled with skyscrapers downtown, and endless suburbs in all directions outside of downtown. I love it!
San Francisco has height restriction in few areas and san jose isn't really filled with skyscrapers
Anchorage , Fairbanks or Juneau doesn't either
Dc was designed by a French man Pierre Charles L'Enfant
This during the middle of the day during the middle of the week so that’s why it’s quiet
