The point about Intrinsic vs Extrinsic rewards honestly reminds me of modern Minecraft. Current Minecraft is all about progression, get your Netherite Armor, get your mending enchantments, kill the Ender Dragon, get your elytra, and then stop playing because you "did everything," when people are asked what they want from updates they say "more progression."
It even somewhat applies to modern Don’t Starve. During the Return of Them era of DST, a lot of people would start treating the game like a roguelike, where they would wait for the next character referesh before then rushing to kill the Fuelweaver with the new character and waiting for the next update. After the addition of the Celestial Champion, players would go for it instead of or alongside the Fuelweaver, but not much else changed. With the current update line, From Beyond, there’s no longer any end goal - there’s always something to do thanks to the rifts and new bosses. Additionally, the Insight trees encourage you to take your time with a character and not rush to kill the Fuelweaver on Day 2. It encourages you to set your own goals, whereas Return of Them era encouraged you to just go fight Fuelweaver/Champion. (Similar thing applies to with the lore - whereas aNR and RoT focused on adding new lore information like the ancient arthopod civilization or the Fuelweaver or the portal or the eye in aNR or Alter and Wagstaff returning in RoT, From Beyond focuses on fleshing out what we already know to expand our information without outright telling us everything.)
I actually love the idea of adding vast new spaces like the ocean and caves. Minecraft faced a similar issue. When the nether was introduced, it was bland and there wasn't much to do. Over time though, we can't imagine a minecraft without the nether. It's been updated and has made the game so much more fun. I feel the same way about the caves and oceans.

The Brightshades need a tweek or two. The fact I have to battle the suckers, every other day, when I actually want to just chill in my base and do some chores, is a real pain in the neck. Not helped in the least by the fact that the 'shades come in 3's, deal a ton of damage, and aren't all that squishy either. And worst of all - once the rift is open, you can't really close it, unless you exit the game and use world settings to remove it temporarily. Dont starve is literally one of my favorite games of all time so seeing you post a history about the whole game was very cool getting to learn more about it
I put sooo much time into the original Dont Starve on console. It was so addictive, i mastered it. But i haven't played it in years. Been thinking of returning to it recently.
i really like the direction DST is going in. adding more challenges and end game content, keeping things challenging and fun, but also making an effort to be palatable to newer players. if you've tried to get friends into the game before, you already know just how tough it can be to get new players to really enjoy the game for what it is. in my opinion, that's been the enemy of DST for the longest time now. they sit at base constantly, scared of doing new things and exploring, only to then get bored and give up playing. and you can't really blame them. stuff like offering an optional "easy mode", or giving the players a scrapbook to fill up to learn things about the game, will certainly make it a lot easier for newcomers. also not to mention how the scrapbook is gonna make it so new players aren't constantly pausing the game to check the wiki.
I love this video, I joined during "The return of them" arc and seeing the new update adding stuff that's not optional feels so weird lol. 2:04:08 Also I saw this like a month ago in a short, it made me so mad to see a LOT of people not know Deerclops is from DST and asking why the game copied a terraria boss, the same way half of TF2 players don't know the Hambat is also from DST. Crossovers never make DST more well known lmao
These videos are so well made, so well put up and so well researched, I've been watching since less than 50k subs and the work you put it deserves serious recognition
I'm very happy with the last part of the video, it really shows just HOW MUCH the game has improved over the past couple years and that people tend to overblow how badly the game's design has changed, it's all unironically _so good_ despite some of the flaws it has
I don’t say this lightly, but this is pretty much the perfect video. I’m entranced by video essays, and you made a video about one of my favorite games OAT. The structure and sections are immaculate as well. Do I wish this video was 10 hours long? Of course. But I still love this video. Thank you.

I got recommended one video of dont starve about a week ago. Now Im watching what is pretty much the third part in whats going to be the Dont Starve Timeline Trilogy by OrangE. Definitely an instant classic rewatch for years to come
I played the game in the early builds and really had no idea how barebones it was. I watched the totalbiscuit and yogscast play it, i told my friends about it, I use to draw Wilson and other characters in school. I remember the weird research points system but not all the bugs lol, and Kevin is insanely devoted, that dude helped me with creating modded characters. What a guy. Love this game and devs man
a great time for a video like this to be made... this new "from beyond" arc of updates theyre on right now, really is having me go all the way back to the beginning trying to learn all of the new mechanics that have been added, and ive played the game for many years....every time I check back in, its so different, but still feels like the same game. just trying to figure out how this works before I give up and consult the wiki... it makes me happy that klei is no longer afraid of making drastic changes, going back to the drawing board and throwing something crazy in there just to see if it sticks. it keeps the game interesting and keeping in constant contact with player feedback has obviously worked throughout these years. i just wish other game developers could look at klei's model and adapt it for themselves so we can have more games like this one..

I hope you haven't killed your sanity to go through the history of games. I love your content though, the BTD6 one was amazing. This video came out 24 minutes ago, so I guess I am early. Here at roughly 2.6k views. Edit: 37:29 Never thought I needed Death by Glamour with spinning Webber in my life. Edit: 55:11 Never did I think there was enough Maxwell narration in that one song from Klei to remix into that. Edit: 1:00:43 And again. Edit: 1:06:29 Good lord, how long does it even take just to do all of that?! Edit: 1:20:45 Okay, I now need a chester plushie just so I can wear it too, haha. Edit: 1:28:10 Wait, really? Edit: 1:37:26 Basically why I don't fight Dragonfly alone...other than of course the mechanic of her moving and attacking at the same time unless perfectly baited out. Edit: 2:15:22 Maxwell Gaming! ...I need to figure out what he said. And I lost track, think the Wilson to Maxwell score is 3 to 1? Haha, I'll have to rewatch this again with a friend. This was amazing though, taught me a lot more than I thought from your previous iceberg/lore videos. The point made at the end, and during the Hamlet segment was summarized pretty well, I will say. You learn to survive, then it's mainly the bosses you turn to, but despite that, there's a lot more stuff I find myself enjoying without realizing it. I do love Don't Starve, and I am excited for the future of this game. Most likely final edit: I figured out that at the end, Maxwell said like and subscribe. Jokes on you, Maxwell. I did that way before you could tell me to!
There was a few streams where the man who made all of don't starves sounds came on and gave a few interesting facts about how they were made. Apparently, Bernie was made by smashing klei plushies together
I forgot to mention a timestamp where the evil monkey baron shows up at 1:50:16 saying "YOU!" That, or I accidentally deleted that when editing more timestamps. But yeah, kind of funny how some sounds are made.
I feel like Terraria Deerclops showing up first is probably from everyone trying to look up how to summon him since he was completely optional and somewhat annoying to get the items for.
Modern day the egg has been changed where the baby can make their own own nest so you can make a tall bird farm by hatching eggs and letting the tall bird make their own nest
It would be cool if lava caves were added as a new biome. Maybe after beating dragon fly, a new sinkhole opens that leads somewhere in the caves un connected to the land.
1:07:21 the fear and hunger noise from the background actually triggered some sort of neurological response in my head and i got really terrified out of nowhere, thank you.

YOU are the ONLY UA-camr that made me watch a 2 hour vids multiple times and that is not all. I Had so much fun while watching them. You deserve every good thing in your life
1:50:15 I love how The Evil Monkey Baron™ has become a recurring joke in these videos
This guy spent 500 hours recording this, that shows dedication. If this video doesn't blow up, idk what will
I will blow up

Dont starve is literally one of my favorite games of all time so seeing you post a history about the whole game was very cool getting to learn more about it
Still baffles me how a game called Don’t Starve has hunger being the least of your problems.
hamlet
I put sooo much time into the original Dont Starve on console. It was so addictive, i mastered it. But i haven't played it in years.
Been thinking of returning to it recently.
Currently pulling an all nighter to fix my sleep schedule and this helped me not pass out, thank you.
i really like the direction DST is going in. adding more challenges and end game content, keeping things challenging and fun, but also making an effort to be palatable to newer players. if you've tried to get friends into the game before, you already know just how tough it can be to get new players to really enjoy the game for what it is. in my opinion, that's been the enemy of DST for the longest time now. they sit at base constantly, scared of doing new things and exploring, only to then get bored and give up playing. and you can't really blame them. stuff like offering an optional "easy mode", or giving the players a scrapbook to fill up to learn things about the game, will certainly make it a lot easier for newcomers. also not to mention how the scrapbook is gonna make it so new players aren't constantly pausing the game to check the wiki.
A TWO HOUR video release in the middle of the work day? Come on, we got stuff to do.
Ironically, their original idea of going out in a rouge-like adventure and coming back to build a town is literally just Cult Of The Lamb.
1:02:17 had me cackling like an idiot at midnight
Wilson got nothing...
I don’t even play Don’t Starve, and I love this video! Now I actually want to play the games! Good job man!
When its over 2 hours it is always good
That hyper realistic image of wilson at 1:02:19 now lives rent free in my mind playing everywhere at the end of time
i love this video. watched it 3 times and it's still interesting. good job OrangE!
Crossovers never make DST more well known lmao
can you tell me the short i want to read that
link me the short
TELL US THE SHORT,TELL US THE SHORT.
now im curios....
It's crazy to see how far this game has come. Started playing in early beta and loved every moment

WTF???? MAXWELL GAMING IS A CANON????
Devs:(*make a long and complicated way to reach the boss*)
Players:oh no, anyway(*beats final boss at day2*)
You always make me laugh out loud with the dumbest things. That edit of the hamlet teaser and the bloons lore video just killed my lungs.
These videos are so well made, so well put up and so well researched, I've been watching since less than 50k subs and the work you put it deserves serious recognition
Finally I can learn who Wilson is
I played Don't Starve since it launched, and man it's so awesome seeing this game go from a weird flash game concept to a full fleshed creation :D
Amazing video! Also just to say: they added beefalo riding in solo a little while ago-- I think around when hamlet came out ^_^
It's really interesting to see the devs make a 180 with their update philosophy
I don't even play Dont Starve yet I watched this entire video...
I'm very happy with the last part of the video, it really shows just HOW MUCH the game has improved over the past couple years and that people tend to overblow how badly the game's design has changed, it's all unironically _so good_ despite some of the flaws it has
nice video -a guy who can watch a 2-hour video in 10 minutes.
1:26:23 God i love this clip, im so happy you used it lmao
Damn another banger. Can't wait to watch it later.
"a laugh designed solely to scare the player" provides a barely audible audio clip that i wouldnt even hear in game
I don’t say this lightly, but this is pretty much the perfect video. I’m entranced by video essays, and you made a video about one of my favorite games OAT. The structure and sections are immaculate as well. Do I wish this video was 10 hours long? Of course. But I still love this video. Thank you.
16:13 the bot torch strat was genius...just not for later versions of the game. I still love and respect the strat though
Cant wait to actually see it!
Update: This Took Me 11 Hours To Finish. But It Was Worth It
Orange decided to wake up and enlighten us
Massive respect for the long highly edited video
Other creators would probably take an year to make a video like this
I can't get over the fact that pig coins are called Oincs. There's just something unreasonably perfect about that horrible, horrible pun.
nice story of the development. I wasn't sure if this was going to be about development, or the game's story, which is certainly a deep subject!
I can already tell this video gonna be amazing
35:16 small bird on top
This is the longest video I’ve actually payed attention to. Good job. I’m gonna start playing again
46:00 funnily ive got introduced to the game during this update. No wonder ive uninstalled not lobg after lmao
I got recommended one video of dont starve about a week ago.
Now Im watching what is pretty much the third part in whats going to be the Dont Starve Timeline Trilogy by OrangE.
Definitely an instant classic rewatch for years to come
Bassicaly 1v1 story of Wilson and william
I played the game in the early builds and really had no idea how barebones it was. I watched the totalbiscuit and yogscast play it, i told my friends about it, I use to draw Wilson and other characters in school. I remember the weird research points system but not all the bugs lol, and Kevin is insanely devoted, that dude helped me with creating modded characters. What a guy. Love this game and devs man
a great time for a video like this to be made... this new "from beyond" arc of updates theyre on right now, really is having me go all the way back to the beginning trying to learn all of the new mechanics that have been added, and ive played the game for many years....every time I check back in, its so different, but still feels like the same game. just trying to figure out how this works before I give up and consult the wiki...
it makes me happy that klei is no longer afraid of making drastic changes, going back to the drawing board and throwing something crazy in there just to see if it sticks. it keeps the game interesting and keeping in constant contact with player feedback has obviously worked throughout these years. i just wish other game developers could look at klei's model and adapt it for themselves so we can have more games like this one..
guys i've already watched this and can confirm that at the end you'll finally learn the location of the base

I've never been so gladly baited in all my life haha I was expecting a lore video and got one, but not the way I expected xD
Marvelous video and content, trully.
I clicked on this video expecting it to be 8 minutes long
I was wrong
how tf did you change your whole channel from a funny dst videos to these actually quality big videos! i've been watching this channel for 3 years or something and its actually good to see someone making progress with their channel
This is so well put together, massive props and much love
Klei making the forums schizophrenic while teasing updates is hilarious
51:23 I laughed SO HARD at this part, because that was my exact reaction, even to today's updates-
I hope you haven't killed your sanity to go through the history of games.
But yeah, kind of funny how some sounds are made.
apple
I feel like Terraria Deerclops showing up first is probably from everyone trying to look up how to summon him since he was completely optional and somewhat annoying to get the items for.
Modern day the egg has been changed where the baby can make their own own nest so you can make a tall bird farm by hatching eggs and letting the tall bird make their own nest
It would be cool if lava caves were added as a new biome. Maybe after beating dragon fly, a new sinkhole opens that leads somewhere in the caves un connected to the land.
55:09 did maxwell just say frick off??????
1:07:21 the fear and hunger noise from the background actually triggered some sort of neurological response in my head and i got really terrified out of nowhere, thank you.
The reason the old civilization don’t leave skeletons is probably because they are bug like in nature and their exoskeletons have already decomposed
I have watched this 3 times, i don't regret it
