- I bought the cheapest Mitsubishi Evo 6 VI in the country without ever seeing it. Does it turn out to be a complete write off salvage or can we rebuild it to be an STI Killer?!

You guys should name the car Penicillin since it kills STI’s
Came here to say the same thing
This is the cure for STi's ams STD's.
Easy now, Pasteur 😂
hehehehehehehe Thats a good one. I like that. favourite comment in a while
“How is this going to beat the sti?”
This car was designed to beat Subarus from the factory lol
Those wars were fairly well known back then. Hell, you would get magazines having entire spreads directly comparing the two head to head.
That's how you sold cars back in the day. That rivalry sold a lot of WRXs and Evos.
restore it, fill the holes in the boot etc. Its only going up in value.
Yes specially when it becomes us legal to import.
"If you're looking for a toy of some sort" lol
The most beautiful of the Evos in my opinion. Please make it do all the right sounds
If you look up a bloke called Jimmy Evo in Australia, he's on all the performance Mitsubishi groups on Facebook, he's a Mitsubishi wrecker in the Sydney area. Always had Evo 6 parts.
i second this, Jimmy can help you out with pretty much anything evo related
Mitsubishi racing spares out Australia will have everything you need
"i dont want to have to repaint the door" *immediately walks around the whole car saying hes going to repaint every other panel* LOL
Mitsubishi, oh what happened to you.
thatfeel they still making the cars?
@@mrphiscal they make sad suvs now
The sti finally caused Mitsubishi’s death.
thatfeel They fucked up...
@@gmaccormack420 No it didn't, the financial crisis caused the Evo's death.
Gotta go to the dealer with the title and they will cut one. I peel vynle everyday at work and the easiest way is with a heat gun and use 3M adhesive remover spray the red and white can.
E46 M3 first ,now the evo. Man my 2 dream cars
MCM would be proud of this nugget
Mcm is shit thats for fucking leftys
@@226sickology MCM is about the realest channel that has ever graced UA-cam. You're a fucking cretin.
Mcm.... bolt ons and that's it.. these boys actually dig into motors and track race. Please don't compare.. SA are on another level
@@ImBarryScottCSS MCM slap on bolt-ons and have other shops do any of the serious wrenching...wtf are you on?
Don't forget the "heart-felt" sob story and the terrible music and acting from the failed drama student Moog.
All their fans seem to want to drop to their knees and take a load.
Beed blast, sand blast that floor and put a good coating on the bottom, definitely dont want the floor rusting out in a few years
unfortunately he already did it, and did a rather shitty job covering everything up. I will be taking mine apart during winter for dustless blasting, epoxy primer, paint, and a thin undercoat
So on the Early evos the "Surface rust" always tend to be worse then it looks in the rear frame rails.
YAY for picking an awesome project car!
BTW, check the chassis rails where the rear subframe bolts into, they usually rust from the inside out.
The intake/battery relocation kit + intercooler piping is Cusco, same as the one I had on my Evo 5.
Regarding parts, there are wreckers in Aus that wreck these, Malaysia and NZ are a good place to look too.
Love this! The window trim can be painted with the Rust-Oleum black bumper/trim paint. Works amazing. Just tape off the pieces you need to paint. You guys always take your time, so it will turn out great!
Take the code from the driver door lock and take it to the dealership with your title for the car. they should be able to cut you a new key. Could consider ordering the factory keyfob with the unlock buttons as well
His local locksmith should be able to cut a key to that code too.
shift knob as a prize for the slowest driver in the next season of the track challenge miata
When I lost the key to my car, I ended up taking the trunk lock assembly and getting a lock smith to make me a key, worked perfectly!!!
255 18" will definitely cause rubbing issues. On the front, the tire will cut into the chassis behind the fender liner when turned.
On the back, there is a lip under the overfender which is metal. Will need to be modded.
Also check the metal support underneath the wing. They tend to suffer from rust.
Excited to see the build :)
Hey there, over here in the UK we've got loads of parts for these! Parts are available everywhere
dont break those wind visors! they are worth money to someone.
Yep. Factory option and in great condition. That's exactly what they looked like. I was a Mitsubishi salesman when the 6 was brand new.
They werent a faded purple when they came new were they?
@@speedacademy doesnt matter they are rare
Agree - monsoon shields they're called and you will find the car sucks without them. The AC doesn't work well, and on a hot day it's nice to have the windows cracked in the rain.
@@speedacademy trust me dude. They are super rare. Leave them exactly as is. Do what u can to precondition them. But do not....I repeat..DO NOT...remove then
Redoing the door cards is pretty easy. Just get some spray adhesive. Applying it is almost like a vinyl wrap, while spraying the adhesive as you go.
Not so easy on the evo4-6. the door cards are one piece, with only the very slightest recess for finished edge of fabric.
It's easier to peel half away(normally the lower half first) clean the door card then spray ahesive to both door and fabric then slowly push back into position without stretching so finished fabric edges line back up to original positions, then repeat on the top half once half has set. Plus oe fabric is very hard to source especially seeing evo 4/5/6/6.5 all had unique colours.
Then use Tornado gun to clean fabric afterwards.
STI Killer was the name of a 4th gen Camaro built by and featured in GM High Tech Performance magazine. The magazine is gone and 99.8% of your audience probably has never heard of it lol. But I dig it! Excited to see her progress!
Good luck PT. I fell in love with that GR STI. After you put the EVO on the lift, it looks like an uphill battle. Can't wait for the head to head race.
Hi guys. I did a similar restoration on an Evo 6.5 Tommi Mak. You want to get the parts diagram from lancer register and use the part numbers to order your bits like intake and vacuum hoses and interior trims from Amayama including your missing key.. Pretty cheap and direct from japan. Just pull the peeling door trims off and it is textured underneath.
Had the same problem with the door cards on my Oz rally. The door cards are two pieces, but there's plastic melt tabs attaching the two together. Drill/dremel them out. Use contact cement to put the new fabric on (I would recommend some thing padding, as well). Just make sure to stretch it tight and wrap all the way around, unlike the original fabric. Then just epoxy into the holes where the melt tabs were. Or 3d print some proper size plugs that you can melt back in
This car is rough. But definitely excited for the build.
Literally subbed to this channel specifically for this build. So excited!!
Love you guys, can't wait for this.
When i saw the thumbnail, I was thinking abt the Tommi Makinen Evo 6.5. Hmmm 🤔 a Silver one...hmmm
Im so stoked for this build. You guys have the best builds on youtube hands down. Boosted Boiz are very half ass. B is for Build gets away with being the biggest modern day RICER for some reason. But you guys have nothing else but quality and integrity. your knowledge goes way beyond wrenching.
Thank you. Building cars right is harder than most people realize!
For the key you can go to a Junkyard and use a cylinder from a mirage 97-02
Evo 9 owner here, super fired up for this Evo series! Was sad when Peter sold his beautiful Evo 8, can't wait for the rest of the videos!
@9:29 that is clearly a buttplug. No other explanation.
Pino Catozzo he said “I’m gonna get one double the size” 🤣🤣🤣
I know with Toyota one of the lock cylinders has a key code (usually RH door) that you can take to the dealer and they can cut you a key. So I would check to see if Mitsubishi does the same
Just bring proof of ownership. They can cut the key from the VIN
The black vertical window framing is really easy tape off and spray with canned paint. Just be sure to tape and paper everything so that no overspray gets on anything. This was the same case on two Galant VR4s I owned. I’m not a fan of spray paint but it can turn out great even from a novice.
I'm soo soo excited for this build series you guys are killing it like usual !
Glad you bought it actually. Looks like it went to a much better home! I'm lusting after an Evo III some day to complement my VIII RS.
Super excited for this build!
Strip to bear shell flip on to side bead blast, rust repair and bed liner the whole floor pan be a good start
Pete check the front seats . The factory recaro's are well known for reclining themselves backwards slowly whilst driving. I've not managed to work a fix out for mine yet but if your keeping them it's worth looking into
you should wrap the door cards in a momo or sparco patterned fabric to match seats and you should get a tasteful momo or sparco shift knob with a short shifter kit to round off the interior.
This is going to be a much more interesting build. Kill those wheels with fire.
rosssport is your friend. Really looking for to the build! TommyFyeah may have a dash from his 5 half cut and the dealer won't be able to do anything for this car. trust kikaku for japanese parts.
^^
There really is not much evo content on UA-cam it's awesome to see a build like this
Ditch the 550 go for the G25-660 like the STi
If you don't want to properly clean up the undercarriage of existing rust, but want to put something over it, try woolwax or fluid film, though it'll be a yearly application. The issue is you definitely DON'T want to put some type of coating over top of existing rust, without doing some rehab level stuff like your drift car M3. Rubberized undercoatings or any sealants are just going to trap the existing rust and moisture and make it rot from the inside more rapidly.
Dope ass car no lie for anyone who doesn’t know about them if you do the research you’ll find out. I can’t wait to see the build and hope you keep it jdm
Any oem parts needed defintely have give Ross Sport here in the UK. Defintely no better companies out there for sourcing oem parts let alone aftermarket parts. Absolute legends when it comes to Evos, theyll look after you
In reference to getting a key cut.
I had to do the same for an old Civic of mine. All I had to do was take proof of ownership to the local dealer, and they were able to use the VIN to get a "key code". I took that key code to a locksmith (the dealer wasn't able to cut keys) and they cut me a key. It worked like a charm! Hopefully you can do something of the same with the Evo.
I'm so stoked on this build. What a great choice!
When you build the engine have a look into deleting the balance shafts.
This
I just asked in one of your recent live-streams if PT had any plans to build another Evo. Glad to see this thing come along. Excited to see where he goes with it.
Oh yes! Finally some evo content :D
Keep up with the good work and great choice of parts!
I'm a few months late and have just found this playlist. Seeing this Evo in this condition feels like I've been kicked in the balls, i have no idea what your like with cars but can't wait to see it finished and really hope you do it justice. It deserves it 💓
Welcome! its already been a long rebuild but well worth it.
@@speedacademy thanks for replying. I'm looking forward to the next episode 👍
exciting, thanks for saving this car..
Hey PT and DP, try and remove the key barrel off the rear trunk - that should have a key code on the back for the locksmiths to make the replacements. Otherwise, with the barrel in hand, they might be able to open it up and check the combination. This is assuming the ignition key is the original unit that came from the factory! but try it out and see how you go.
veeeerrrrrryyyyy exited on this build
Use FluidFilm for the Underbody. I've coated my 06 Hawkeye STI with Permafilm and Fluidfilm for maximum conservation. Just be sure to remove all of the flaking rust before
May be a long shot, but Mitsubishi put the spare key in the owners manual usually, it’s not a key with a fob on, so most people overlook it, just check all booklets and see if anything drops out! :)
Looking forward to this build some nice bits there already. Keep up the good work lads.
Just wrap those door trim pieces with a gloss or matte black. Wrapping them works really well!
Glad to see an evo build back on the channel. And from all the evo the evo 6 eveb sweeter!!
That shifter looks like a.. ahh.. nevermind..
Lol that's just wrong
The anodized blue maf pipe u can strip the colour by using baking soda and water... soak them generously for a couple of day
Building this car to beat the abandoned STi is hardly a challenge...
Yeah looking at the setup on the car as it sits it could make 300 without breaking sweat.
You guys could just get a factory 99' Mirage trunk lid. Same body style in the US and Canada. Just find one in silver and you'll just have to mock your holes up for the spoiler. It would be a bit crazy to spend the money or do the body work or get a replacement evo trunk lid
I say color match the plugs on the trunk and call it a day
Not sure if Mitsubishi is the same, but Toyota have a code behind the drivers door card near the handle that a locksmith can type into their key machine and it cuts a new key. I lost my only key to my ST205 GT4 and got a new one cut. Worth a look!
For the underbody you can use POR-15 with great results and then use Lizard Skin ontop of it.
Lizard skin will give you sound sound/heat insulation and also coats the bottom very well! I would recommend doing the subframes as well.
Both are really DIY friendly especially with a shop style air compressor. I did my Ap1 S2000 to good extent with a Harbor Freight Compressor on a Quick Jack in 2 weekends (2 coats)
I also did the inside of the trunk and center console too.
For the wind-visors I NEVER see OEM ones, and I think it would look interesting if you just polished them a bit (headlight resto kit) and added a spray clear coat or tint if they don't come out as black as you want. I re-did my neighbors and they actually do work well and reduce buffeting with the windows cracked
The dealership will cut you a factory key as long as you can provide the title in your name.
Can I just say that I am pumped for this build! Please do in depth coverage, I love following your builds but want more after every episode. Excited!
You need it to be red with all the decals like the tommi makinen edition if you want to be properly slaying subbies. Full wrap is probably the best way to go
my opinions...paint the window deflectors body color or with black semi gloss trim paint. paint the B-pillars semi gloss black trim paint. the dash can be repaired and either wrapped or textured painted by a specialist. i had a dash done and it was amazing. lastly, weld the holes in the trunk, your gonna paint the whole car over anyway i bet...nice car PT💪
Heat works fine to remove vinyl wrap...the residue will only result if they used low cost vinyl, but heat is the best way to remove the wrap unless you can leave it in the sun when it's 80+ degrees outside.
YAY! Finally, a built of a VI. This was the EVO that spark my love for EVOs. I would love to have a VI to supplement my love for Evo with my X.
Tim Yang look at adam lzs V
As for the key remove the drivers door lock there will be numbers on the side of the lock, just take the lock to a locksmith and they should be able to cut a key from plan
The Evo5s look so amazing. I really love Tommyfyeah’s evo !
He sold it
John Gorgis yeah ik :/. Hopefully he pics up an s13 or something
This is also a evo 6 but are similar
Hey Pete, you should fill in that hole in the dash and flock it. Also you should flock your door cards too!
We all know the 4G63 is the 2JZ of 4 cylinders.
When done correctly and the problems taken care of first
Grind the rust all off. Primer the area. Then spray some gravel guard. Then paint if you want. That’s what I would do and shouldn’t take long at all.
Use a heat gun to remove the wrap. If there’s any adhesive left it can be removed with goof off or acetone.
Time to start watching Speed Academy vids again
Do a mold form a top of dash. Then make a cardon one. Cut the top and clue carbonfiber top on. Precision work, but can be done.
You have cutted out OEM-numbers dash already, so make it better.
Wire brush and chemical rust converter spray, then seal with paint. Should make it last hell of a lot longer
3M fabric adhesive. Take your time and do a little at a time. Works great and lasts forever
Im super fucking excited guys.
Literally waiting for notifications 😁
Not Wind Visor.
Rain Visor/Rain Guard.
Those ducts are for the Air intake.
1980's A175 Lancer was the 1st to feature those ducts.
Lancer Evolution is the hearts of millions of people worldwide 🌎 and a Japanese domestic market legendary Car a timeless dimension
Cant wait to get see this build unfold! Looking forward to owning an Evo 5 or 6 myself in the years to come :)
Complete paintjob Is due, for sure. If like to see you guys attempt one for sure!
get some fabric, if you want it to look cool you could get some suede and then just mask off and get some spray adhesive and spray it on the door cards then apply the fabric
Those rain guards are pretty rare, I would keep them. For the b pillars, you might be able to find some carbon fiber overlays, I had some on my GR sti and they look alright, otherwise you can just wrap them gloss black, but they may not match the rest of the trim.
Going forged to only make 350whp? Doesnt these engines make like 400whp with stock internals?
Yes
Yeah that doesn't make the most sense but I mean I guess. Haha
@@StatusSymbol if they have the money, why not waste it eyy:D
Stock internals don’t like to handle more than 350whp especially at the track. And I’m being modest
@@speedacademy the head likes it even less
Looking forward to this build!
I paid 3k for my evo 5 rolling shell and 4k for a brand new evo 8 engine last summer. Super excited to have it running in the next month. Has very similar problems to yours on the body
Looks like a wearelikewise gear shifter. Pretty popular in the drift / jdm circles I believe. 👍🏻
I also have replacement door cards. Made in stitched leather. And I have no idea how to fit them. Some kind of glue plus weighted press contraption. But no idea.
Omg. The Evo 5 and 6 is still to this date my favorite Japanese sports car!! I gotta wait 1 more year here in the US 😞
Guys look up Ross Sport UK for evo parts. They stock a wide range of parts for all Evo's. They have OEM straight from mitsubishi
Also guys check out Stuart's sports and performance on Facebook uk. He's a really good guy and stocks lots of second hand evo parts.
I love that you specced the two cars similarly! Boxer VS Flat4!!
