Thanks to all those who suggested using the Evo 8 AC line. One is already on order!
Why are you guys avoiding a high flow cat?? Ive noticed on a few of your builds that you've not had them in your exhaust setup? Cheers
Pete, Toyota make a full electric (no belt drive at all) ac compressor for their HSD hybrid lineup, it would a solution to remove the stock one and make some room.
@@toto29620 are these 3 phase or no? I looked into them but shelved the idea because they seemed to require quite a bit to get working properly.
@@mhtate3626 It was just an idea, never done it myself. I have done a bit of research an the prius one run from the traction battery at around 200v dc (found that on a forum) so yeah, that would be a pain to adapt. But i have found a lot of electric ac compresseur for cars on chinese maker, they are sold with a controler and run on 12v dc. The crurent is kinda large tho, 800w to 1500w so between 70 to 120 amps. That would need a beefy battery and alternator.
Run a dry sump kit get rid of the oil pan! Lol I just want the content so I can see if I’d be able to take it on as a project.
That downpipe is legit man! Nice work!!
You got skills for fabbing all that in that tight space
swap the "b" with a "p"
@@LuxKeiwoker lmao. We all would fap if it was Ti lol
I would look at getting a custom line made for the air con pipe as I think there will be too much heat from that header (it will glow red hot).
I concur! that line is going to be toast in no time.
If your manifold is glowing red, you have bigger issues xD
I've melted a hole in that AC line and I run a stock turbo/manifold. Took about 10mins of hard track time for it to cook. I used it as an excuse to bin the AC but maybe you could find a way to re-route the line.
I did the same and binned mine mate ! We all suffer with the same problems hey. Did you get rid of the ugly stock fan and steel shroud for a slimline one too ?
Hey Pete. Look Into using CT9A a/c lines. I believe that will get you further away from the manifold. Looks great though mate! 👌🏻
I just want to see this thing rip already. The suspense is Killing me! I do love the build content.
Al from skid factory would say good job.
ohhhhhhh they callllll him turboooo Yodaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
You are doing a great job on the fabrication, you will only get better by practice. Love the car and the series, thanks for the videos!
Amazing fab work Pete, love your high quality production of your videos. Can't wait for the evo to start up. Keep it up!
Seriously good work, man. Well impressed with your fabbing skills - some serious work and patience needed there.
Loving your builds.
You were 100% right about the flex section in the downpipe bud. Doing a good job here. Well done. You have a small Evo crew watching this build so feel free to ask about various parts or any issues you come accross. I am sure half of us will say something in the comments anyway! Good luck dude!
Perfect choice for exhaust! They made the best exhaust for s2k’s as well!.
I am also a novice tig welder ! But learning from a lot of people. Since your using an air cooled torch , I know the struggle but try to choke up on the torch a lot. It can get hot and youll have to take more breaks , but your welds will be much more inline. Its all about getting in weld time for self taught people though. Killin it man ! Fitment of the down pipe is amazing.
You are amazing guys, LOVE watching the way you building the EVO.
ONE THING!!!
That wastegate will cause really big damage on the radiotar, because the engine will move during driving, or you had to use solid mounts. With little modification you can save the radiator, mind this.
I post this frequently, but you guys produce some of the best car content. Keep it up. This deserves 1M subs and more. Currently the show I jump on the fastest when I see a vid posted.
REALLY NICE JOB PT! between the heat management and fabrication you should be proud of your work! that sucker won't be having any heat management issues
Son asked me “daddy what’s that other pipe that goes from the turbo?” (Me) “that my son is the flamethrower” 🔥
Good job! I am also a self taught “welder” and had better results on stainless when I backpurged.
Metalution plus it helps eliminate sugar inside the pipe
@@thatbeardedwelder back purge unless you want your stainless steel to turn into non stainless steel
Loving the video. The tighteness is unsettling I feel your pain. I went half radiator however I went with oil filter housing as my SOURCE for oil.
That one-off pipe you made is a work of art, very nice.
You can use the top AC line from an Evo 7/8/9 which runs straight down and clears the manifold with plenty of room. It's a common swap on the Evo 4/5/6. I did it in my 6 TME.
If you’re still uneasy with the tight fitment and although you already have the radiator. They make the half radiators for forward facing setups and it frees up all that space around the back side of the turbo 🤙🏼
Amazing work! So fun seeing people doing their own work.
#builtnotbought
Some Tig welding tips. Only use magnets when tacking. Magnets cause magnetic fields which can/will interfere with the arc.
And if you have pulse settings on your welder, do use it. If not, get a foot pedal.
Slow and steady wins the race.
A sharp point like 35-15° gives a wider arc,60-90° gives a narrower arc. And always just kiss off the point of the electrode so you'll have a "flat" on the point. Prevents the arc from wandering.
And always grind "down" the electrode not "across" it.
I glad to see that you made down pipe!!! Fab works take so much time!
You did a good job filming solo! I forgot about the social distancing after a few minutes. Nice work on that downpipe too!
Mad props to make something that is going to work great! Having that skill is great!
I definitely understand the struggle. Took me over a week to fab up my exhaust. I learned cutting exhaust with a chop saw makes for super crappy fitment, and trying to hold stainless tubing together to tack everything in place sucks since its non-ferrous. Great job on your downpipe!
what a build, love it, cant wait to hear the exhaust sound
Great video SA! Way to go P.T. for keeping the AC...it's very adult of you. Man, my figures are crossed for no cooling issues. 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
good to see you read the comments, sealing the studs saved you a "omg the head gasket leaks" moment :)
I have an '05 Mustang GT and just put JBA CAT4Ward headers on it. I coated as well and you know how much those mustangs generate heat, but now i open the hood while running and big temperature drop difference. Plus gives it a good look!
Great production guys, super crisp footage!
Love the fab work on exhaust. Deeeep respects to you. I also respect the fact that you guys review comments for tips. Respect from Jamaica. Big up
Make a custom AC line and great job on the fabrication, only ppl who’ve tried this knows how much work is put into getting it that good.
dude .. I think u did a great job man .. Deleting the ac prally would've been the easiest way to go... but u made it work!!
My fave part of each build is tooi se how the exhaust sounds. I can't wait
loved watching you make the custom down pipe! and that HKS exhaust is beeaauuteeefullll
If you wanna keep the ac but not the stock ac compressor, u can use an electric compressor from like hybrid fusion or a Prius. They are like 100-200$ on Ebay .
awesome idea
Can't wait to see this car running. good job guys!
always great to see some fabrication instead of just having someone else do it or just bolting something on
I think your exhaust looks good. I like it. I can not weld and it‘s very impressive to me. Your exhaust looks good, be proud of yourself! 😊
That Evo is looking pretty good so far. Great work on that down pipe and exhaust!
Amazing fabrication. The routing looks perfect and the welds look great. You have some serious skills. You're a pro.
Just a tip the down pipe you used exhaust wrap on, your supposed to put it in a bucket of water so it wraps tighter and helps the wrap stick to itself better so there wouldn't be any loose fabric or edges coming up.
I think you did a great job with that downpipe! Good job bro!
Good job Pete ! I have some info for you, the HKS exhaust isn't a true 3" exhaust so that will be a little restriction for you. You should be able to use the stock fan if needed, as I had one installed on my Evo V with the same Koyo rad but with a FP Black turbo. The Evo 7-9 Ac line will work fine, you'll need to bend it a little bit by the top section that bolts near the right headlight (easy job).
Its great seeing you working on a true jdm icon and I look forward to all your videos, keep pushing !!!
Nice fabrication! It is very close to the radiator but it works.
That's a great accomplishment. Just be careful about the thermal expansion of the downpipe because of the clearance between it and the radiator. I used to have a downpipe running close to the steering rod and everytime the car was on track the downpipe would expand making stearing the car much harder due to friction
hey man the welds may not be the best but you're learning still. it'll get better and better. but you did a great job fabbing it up.
Motivates me to build my evo.
Great work as always. Please don't forget to sort out the rust on the inside of wing for us all or we will keep on going on about it. Rust converter 20mins or just mask up the arch and use some of the bed liner you have left over 4hours max 😘
So happy to see the evo coming to gather .
Good call on the liberal use of firesleeve! Also great downpipe/O2 housing. Space sucks for a large high flowing downpipes/o2 but it makes a huge difference! Also great work on the custom work it takes time but feels good to have stuff you made yourself!
Customs exhaust look's awesome! If you wanna go the extra mile, Sand the welds a bit down on the outside of the exhaust and the inside of the exhaust and after your done sanding to you liking put some JB Weld on the Welds that u just sanded.
Amazing video brother! Keep up the great work, looking forward for the start up !!
Excellent progress P-Dog, AWESOME! Cheer's from East-Van B.C., Canada.
Woooow what a work! I own an Evo 6 GSR and love your build! 😍
that HKS exhaust is delicious 😋 i would have out the wastegate dump back in the downpipe or clocked it toward the front engine mount, but you did great bro. i remember building my first exhaust for my mustang...from the 1 7/8 long tube headers, 3" in collector, 3" X-pipe dual mufflers all the way to the 4" tips...and this was built around the independent rear end. i had fun doing it and it was a challenge and allot of work💪
I think you did a great job! Biggest thing with tig welding is practice, just keep at it!
You guys should look into working with ice engine works exhaust modeling. Makes exhaust fabrication easier! Awesome builds as always!
Great work, enjoying your work with this build
My favorite video in this build so far. Exhaust is AWESOME! So glad you went with an open dump. Can't wait to hear this and see it CHOP that sti!! ✌️
Hey Pete, just a heads up, that HKS silent high power rear muffler starts becoming a restriction at around 300whp. The internal diameter is no bigger than a stock system through the muffler section. You can obviously make more power than 300whp, but the catback will hold you back.
i had complete full race turbo kit
no problems fitting around the AC. then again i had an evo 9
I'm sure someone said it already. But if you put the gas into the pipe it helps weld better. And block off the other end obviously
Not sure if you know, but soaking the heat wrap before wrapping it allows you to wrap it a lot tighter and doesn’t get the horrible fibres everywhere 👍🏼
Best Speed Academy video so far. Great work.
Just wanna send my love from Australia. Keep it up guys!!
Might want to try back purge. Same welding process just makes a cleaner inside weld.
I'm glad that you didn't take the easy way out and kept the AC instead.
Satisfying to see the exhaust going on the car
You're not kidding about that HKS system. Phooaw...~~~!!!
Nice job man..Just one thing, you may need a cam sensor shield or alternative heat control. They dont like too much heat.
Sorry if it's been mentioned here already but did you install any radiator fans? Great work man. You both need to try and get on some podcasts and get some exposure to the channel. Grats on getting over 300k! You all deserve more.
Great job, that made my old struggle of fitting a t28 in a Ek with a fullsize radiator look like a breeze in comparison. If you have a local hydraulic shop I think I would at least check the possibility of making a custom ac hose.
A/C lines cannot have rubber as everyone said or ditch the A/C which is best anyways. You need to send those headers to Swain Tech Coatings and have them through the white lightning treatment. I have raced with the stuff for years and nothing gets even close to it. It will really help you manage all that heat under the hood.
it's really coming together
great work
Looks pretty good, I’m doing the same but dual 3” exhaust on my 79 firebird supercharged 540 Chevy, it’s not easy
Solid fab work. Looked pretty daunting. Glad you were able to make it work!
If it was my build, I'd be looking into either cerakoteing the waistgate & turbo exhaust housing or going to a PTP cover. They do offer them for both the turbo AND the waistgate altho which your tight spaces it may be too thick. Which is why Cerakote would be my choice.
Depending on how far the Exhaust stud went into the head it may have pushed metal shavings into the engine. Hard to check without pulling the head but with some castings its possible. Epic build overall, thank you for putting this series together.
I'll say good job. That was a pretty tight looking space.
You can use a CT9A (Evo7-9) AC line
Great craftsmanship 👍
evos exhaust looks like it is going to sound so sick
Wow that welding process so perfect. Congrats mate! Impressive.
You did a great job man, remember when you were first starting to weld!
I would have also put heat management tape on the AC lines around with the dump tube and even around the AC unit. You could also wrap the header even though it’s coated. All of that helps!
A
The full race header might have been the wrong choice for this build
If you have this many clearance issues. Maybe a call to them to get something a little tighter fitting would have been better
Your gonna wanna wrap your power steering lines and get a power steering cooler!
You can have custom AC lines made for probably less than you spent heat protecting that stock one. can route it however you want.
Please show me where! Would love to do that
@@speedacademy I've had them done at a local Napa before using my ends they just made a hose the length i needed. Any Industrial hydraulic hose place should be able to do it if they have the right dies for the crimper. You could make it extra long and just go around the rad support or something. not familiar with Canadialand autoparts stores and if they have the ability to make them up, sorry.
What a ride, I think you nailed that hot side tho. I’m interested in seeing this thing kick some STI butt
I would make some metal heat shields between the turbo/manifold and the water lines and the AC lines, mute heat shielding tubing is OK but the rubber hoses will still cook and go brittle
Told you the oil galleries were on the bottom row 👍🏼 lots of info about it on the UK forums
Good fabbin pete
Job well done in my book. Looks great. Sending love from the caribbean
New camera? The video quality looks MUCH better.
If you want to keep the AC, maybe consider going with an electric compressor (rather than the belt driven) and custom lines. That would be an interesting change of pace project for you guys.
When it's time to finally start it up, please make sure to include filling up all the liquids on camera cause that's so satisfying .
I think you did an excellent job!
Wow, you have the patience of Job!
Awesome work Pete🤙
Give yourself a pat on the back PT. No better feeling than doing things on your own steam
