  • Today in Kerbal Space Program, we will be flying a nice-looking SSTO (single-stage-to-orbit) spaceplane to Minmus and back, without refuelling of course :)

    I love how he goes into the hanger and instantly starts building these great looking designs, I go into the hanger and 30mins later I have a subpar looking plane that half the time won't even fly, let alone make it to space.

      It's all about the center of gravity balance. It's actually a lot harder without nuclear engine, since you basically have to accelerates inside the upper atmosphere and everything begins to overheat, then shoots up to space.

      Planes aren't that tough - couple things to remember about basic aerodymanics and IRL flight... you'll find building a KSP airplane is pretty easy.
      First time I ever played KSP on my buddies computer - I set out to build a plane. My buddy got all snooty "dude... you'll" never make it fly, planes are hard in this game"
      Threw some parts togeather, zip zap zoop, noticed icon that had CG symbol on it... perfect, lift, need lift... other button ah... got it.
      Adjusted wings and empanage until those were where I wanted them. Had to ask about how to rotate, and precisely set/move parts...
      I created a plane that had a vague resemblance to the F86 sabre.
      It "launch" chuckled a little at the antics of the little green goober "piloting" my machine.
      Throttled her up, and started a takeoff roll, waited for the shock on the nose gear to get light - applyed a little backstick, and it rotated and flew just fine, takeoff was achieved at 80 m/s. Buddy was like "uhhh... how?! Y u no have SAS on?! "
      "SAS? Wuzzat?" Says I
      Yeah, SAS stability control... how are you flying without it?"
      Says I "Well, by applying a small amount of dihedral angle to this planes wings - and balancing the distance between the tailplane and wings, then setting that in relation to the CG of the aircraft - I've created a plane that is a tiny bit heavy in the nose in relation to its center of lift - meaning it's inherently stable, and will stall predictably and in a nose down attitude, and when flown hands off, it tries to return to level flight. Don't you know how things fly? You took physics in highschool like I did... right?"
      Blank stare... drools a bit.

      He was basing his design on a previously made one, that he knew already flew. Assuming that most of the parts were the same, they would likely handle similarly.

    KRAKEN SOLUTION HERE!!
    Matt, there is a simple solution to the Kraken death shake problem. There is no need for strut spamming, or turning off auto-strut or SAS, warping, etc Notice, the problem only happens with complex ships or when ships are combined/docked. Two docked ships effectively create one complex ship. What they all have in common are multiple possible control points. The problem appears to be the result of confusion/competition between those control parts (probe cores, docking ports, etc.) as to whom is in control of the ship.
    SOLUTION: Simply right click on any part with the option "Control from here", and assign control to that part. It doesn't matter which one you choose, and the Kraken goes away. It's just that simple.
    I discovered this solution years ago, and have not lost a single ship to it since.
    Good luck!

    Yo Matt,
    This is probably one of the first times I have been this early. I hope you are great!
    I have a video suggestion: I was wondering if you could perhaps make a vtol ssto using the propeller parts for a duna or laythe mission. It's rare to see people using the propeller rotor parts, I guess in that capacity, and it would definitely be interesting to see!
    Perhaps to extend this concept, the duna base could be extended with a mining and fuel processing building/section that has an airlock/docking port or clamp-o-tron so that it can land vertically on the roof and get refilled for long exploration journeys and maybe even for return trips.
    Regardless, I hope all is well for you and your fam!

    Matt, what do you like more, Making history pack or the breaking ground pack

    • @jacobr7729
      @jacobr7729 4 роки тому +11

      Trajan Koberg if you are considering buying one, I would definitely recommend breaking ground. It features the robotic parts and surface features. However, if you find the idea of recreating historical missions appealing, maybe choose making history instead. If you are considering buying making history just for the 5m parts, just use a mod. That’s pretty much it.

    • @t65bx25
      @t65bx25 4 роки тому +7

      Everybody thinks of Making History as a parts pack, but it really isn’t. It’s main feature was the Mission Builder, which was kind of a failure, based on how much it gets used. Breaking Ground, in my opinion, is better in general, but it’s worth noting that one of the main pieces of content, the surface features, don’t work on old saves.

    • @richtigmann1
      @richtigmann1 4 роки тому

      the surface features work if you just go into the game files and change a single number

      Literally just typed your question in. The answer:
      HOW TO ENABLE NEW DLC SURFACE FEATURES INTO YOUR EXISTING SAVE IF YOU OWN THE DLC:
      DISCLAIMER: You are doing this at your own risk so make a back up! There is a possibility that you may have a base/ landed vessel where these will spawn in - you have been warned!
      1. Generate a new save
      2. Go into the Kerbal Space Program>saves folder
      3. Open the persistant.sfs file in notepad
      4. Locate the ROCSeed # and copy it (see image)
      5. Paste into the old save at the same line
      6. Save it and give it a go!
      The link: forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/184861-enabling-surface-features-without-new-savegame/
      You are welcome!

    I've always done the same, if I have to clip parts I eyeball how much space I've overlapped up as a rough % and then just take away that much fuel. Feels like a good compromise.

    • @imthedarknight-8755
      @imthedarknight-8755 4 роки тому

      I don't feel guilty clipping because it weighs the same as two tanks and unless you do it a specific way it still counts the aero forces the same too. All it does it make it shorter

    I maintain that Southern Comfort is a good whiskey to mix with Coke. Wouldn't drink it straight, though.
    As for KSP, I have two land bases on Eve, with a plane that travels between and refuels when it gets to each end. I also have a large space station in Eve Orbit, a mining base on Gilly, and a refueler that travels between the Gilly base and the Eve Orbit Station.
    My entire set-up can transfer crew from LKO to Eve Orbit and back with permanent refuelable rockets, and gets from Kerbin to LKO and back with a small SSTO. At the moment, the only way I can get crew back from Eve surface is by sending single-use multi-stage rockets. What I'm after is a refuelable Eve SSTO.
    I use mods - fuel tank switch, KIS, KAS, and a few others - so I can't use a lot of downloadable craft files. But I wouldn't mind some inspiration and just to know if it's possible.

    I get that we sometimes tend to stick with the desing we really like. I once made Firefly look-a-like ship, since then im obsessed with cargo ships with frontal cargo loading and gimbaling VTOL engines.

    What no whiskey reviews. Damn! Ok, something else I guess. What I like to drink in the morning is a hot but a bit sweet drink of PG tips and a couple of Cranberry Orange Scone. Don't worry Matt if you aren't following me on this. I know when I was a lad I would consume gallons and and gallons of Typhoo tea. But nothing hits the spot as well as PG tips. Where it prepares me for the long morning ahead.

    Just a question. When i try to Part Clip the Parts collide with each other (for example Air intakes break of on the runway if they are touching a diffrent part, or Tanks that are clipped push each other away on the runway). Is there a Option somewere you need to activate? (Part clipping in Debug menu is anabled) I'm thankfull in advance for the advice and sorry for my english, wich is not so good
