KRAKEN SOLUTION HERE!! Matt, there is a simple solution to the Kraken death shake problem. There is no need for strut spamming, or turning off auto-strut or SAS, warping, etc Notice, the problem only happens with complex ships or when ships are combined/docked. Two docked ships effectively create one complex ship. What they all have in common are multiple possible control points. The problem appears to be the result of confusion/competition between those control parts (command pods, probe cores, docking ports, etc.) as to whom is in control of the ship. SOLUTION: Simply right click on ANY part with the option "Control from here", and assign control to that part. It doesn't matter which one you choose, and the Kraken goes away. It's just that simple. I discovered this solution years ago, and have not lost a single ship to it since. Good luck!

Christian Letzerich The kraken is the animistic personification of ksp’s bugs and glitches. Like most games, KSP is held together with duct tape and elbow grease. It works fine for simpler craft, but, as things get more complicated, the game has a harder time keeping everything working properly. The more pieces you have interacting in a craft, the more places there are for something to go wrong. With massive craft, mods like Kerbal Joint Reinforcement help by making the craft much more rigid. This can prevent some of the more dangerous and destructive glitches and interactions.
It’s definitely possible however it would take lots of time and it might be tricky docking lots of parts together let alone one mistake and it all blows up
This was tested by someone a long time ago I'm pretty sure. May have been Scott Manley or Danny2462, I don't remember. Long story short, though: No. The simplest reason is that the game puts the centre of a craft (and thus the point at which it calculates altitude) at the centre of mass or somewhere thereabouts. If you build a ring around a celestial body, the COM will be deep inside said body and the craft will likely explode. Realistically, though, you wouldn't be able to get that far before exceeding the physics range or encountering the Kraken, or a number of other issues.

Matt Lowne, I have the same problem with my massive Station here. I used physics range extender to increase the area in which the game precisely calculates physics from something like 100m to 300 or 400 and it solved most of the problems but this still happened but much less often. I suggest you give it a try, but disable it once you stop using the craft
I was having problems with my super station and narrowed it down to the rotors in the gravity rings. My advice to Matt is to stop the rotors before he launches the refueler.
The thing is, he didn't really fail, the game physics just couldn't handle it. His design was fine and technically, if the game wasn't so unstable when dealing with massive crafts, this would be completely possible. Hopefully ksp 2 improves on this.

Same happened to me where the station imploded from "The kraken", I just wanted to test out the SOS probe but no my station wanted to go kablooey. You can add struts to the rings for support.
I've made stations this size before. I split the station into 3 smaller sections and assembled them in orbit. Also consider using solid rocket boosters as a structural part, like for the spokes of the rings. This will reduce part count.
Hey there dude. This is a great channel, content and sense of humor. For kraken attacks in space, I highly recommend raising your throttle gradually with shift instead of 0 -> 100% thrust. This gives the structure time to react. Best wishes.
Matt I ran into the same problems with my ring station. I was inspired by your previous designs a attached a ring station to a Star Trek space dock design. When I try to build ships modularly using the space dock the kraken attacks more frequently the modules I add. I was even trying to add fuel tank modules so the space station could also serve as a refueling station. But it can’t serve a practical purpose now cause of the kraken attacks. And the more I add to it, the worse my FPS gets. Watching you go through this Matt, I feel your pain.
So you emptied the giant fuel tanks with docking ports at the bottom to make the station easier to get into space and then added giant fuel tanks with engines at the bottom to get the craft into space. Matt, I want to point out a potential solution to both of those problems; use the station's filled fuel tanks as the ascent fuel. Stick a drone to the bottom docking port that basically just functions as the engine that can detach and deorbit itself later. Saves weight and probably lower part count.
I had a similar issue when building a massive space station. It holds over 500 kerbals (560 if I remember correctly) and was assembled by docking massive sections in orbit. When trying to put the finishing touches (literally pieces just made of girder units with docking ports on the end to park space-planes...), the entire station would wobble to pieces when I got close to it. It's a beautiful piece of useless junk (on my PC it takes 7 real seconds for one in-game second to pass) holding many, many kerbals. I still view it as my greatest kerbal accomplishment, and making something big enough to be rejected by the physics engine is an accomplishment in itself. If people are interested in seeing it, I'd be happy to share my save file. It only uses stock parts.
9:37 for ps4 I have the complete opposite, when I try to place the strut it just attached to itself, by the looks of it. If I were to strut a fuel tank to another fuel tank next to it (like a booster) the strut will attach to itself, or at least that's what it looks like so using auto strut is way easier at least for me
When I was playing ksp (I don't now because life) I once did a build similar to this and i got tired of it constantly failing for no reason other than kraken so i broke it up into several different stages like the cor went up then the rest of the station then refueling was also the same result so the solution to said problem is really see how small big you can go with the kraken attacking (as well as restarting the game somewhat helped) and then just do several of those until its fully refueled plus if you want to I heard there is an actual refuel station under the bridge at KSC that if connected to it would allow you refuel the refueler and make one continuous mission otherwise its send up a refueler, refuel station, bring it back, recover vessel, go to wherever refueler is and rinse and repeat
Matt, you definitely earned a glass of whisky for your perseverance in making this craft. It looks pretty, really nice for a static shot. If only it didn't suffer from Kraken-itis I use auto strut on my rockets and spaceplanes and it works without fail. I am using Ferram Aerospace Research, so it is modded physics, but autostrut has saved many spaceplane prototypes from the wing wobble and warping Kraken. So far, no Kraken attacks on my rockets with auto strut. I don't think it would work with your station though, it's just too big and complex, particularly with rotors.
Had the same week. I could record for you my whiskey commercial if you think it would help. "Yes, the whiskey of the week is Canadian Mist. It's not just any whiskey as I love all whiskeys. Except Southern Comfort, Jack Daniels and any Scotch . My G-d whom would drink Scotch . It taste like it has been ran through a two year ago gym that hasn't seen a wash since it was made. But the taste of a cool and crisp Canadian Mist. The drinks of drinks." Maybe that will help Matt.
I had one successful station where I used a large toroidal ring (mod) as a central anchor point for every other part. making the ring the one 'denominator' for movement/flexing etc
4:17 ive only been playing for a month, just learned how to reroute parts today when my mun lander sub-assembly would not attach to my S1b replica. How the hell did he make that ring with mk2 crew cabins
Your very creative you made a space station without thinking about the designs, you just went build build build. I cant even think of a design for my own satellite
A really enjoyable vid. I can't get a station a tenth this size off the ground, let alone into orbit. You are the Mozart of KSP. And yes, I'm sure this station will fly again. Oh, and good job in beating the Kraken to the end of the video!
Matt, the formula for gravity generated by a ring in space is "a = 4π(r^2) / T" or when rearranged, "T = 4π(r^2) / a" This formula literally tells you how fast the ring should go to simulate earth gravity (T is the number of seconds to do one rotation) Meaning the formula for your ring is (Presuming gravity is supposed to be 9.81m/s^2 like earth): T = 4πr^2 / 9.81 By my calculations, r should be 8.5 times the length of the cabin piece that you used to connect the rings to the main core (In meters). Just plug in the numbers, and you have the rotation period to simulate earth gravity. Given the size of the ship, I think that the sped up footage looks about right, maybe a tad fast but reasonable
This idea came about from a reply to Coffee Dude. Just a back up idea challenge How about you launch some kind of large payload to earth orbit but every booster section is actually a space plane of some kind. (Can reuse them for symmetry, could make the center tank one or leave it, planes should be detachable when empty but could be interesting to have them as a chunk.
I had to halt construction on my massive station for the same reasons, though I actually played through and reconfigured/ rescued kerbals. I even built a semi automated escape pod that would use SRBs to rocket away from the station in moments. Hoping KSP 2 fixes these issues
Dang it Kraken!!! I know auto strut was glitchy in 1.3, but since 1.4 it's been fine for me, you can choose to strut to heaviest part or root part or grandparent part. Not only does it reduce your part count greatly improving pc and flight performance, but I haven't seen the Kraken in years! Good luck mate! Keep up the fun vids
"You know what i'm talking about if you're playing Kerbal Space Program, which you probably are because why would you be watching this if you don't" Well, i got called out.
If you want to play the footage at a higher speed in vegas, you could get an audio sample of the engines and overlay it in the stems. The engine sound seems to repeat quite quickly so you wouldn't need to sample a huge section of it.

Matt we bloody love you!! you hero !!!. You are a true NHS hero and the whole nation thanks you for what you do.
I don’t know how you build these I could never do this! 😂
Lol I know the feeling
Hey there dude.
This is a great channel, content and sense of humor.
For kraken attacks in space, I highly recommend raising your throttle gradually with shift instead of 0 -> 100% thrust.
This gives the structure time to react.
Best wishes.
He left debris in space...
I found it tends to help if you make an extra stabilization ring attached to the existing rings. It helps reduce ring inclination and wobble
not as big as jo mama
Oooooo
I agree. Jo's mama is pretty big.
Hey matt love your videos, keep up the good work!
7:48 "But more importantly the solar panels look a lot more spaceshipy and sciencey" lol new words were just born
If only it didn't suffer from Kraken-itis
I use auto strut on my rockets and spaceplanes and it works without fail.
We appreciate your dehydrationated commitment to getting us good KSP videos.
Impressive matt nice work keep it up
The amount of aerodynamic drag 9:45 would be so ridiculously immense and those "centrifuges" so to speak would break off
But we're in a game so doesn't matter
It's fine if you have to take your time on these videos mate, what you're doing is important and very much appreciated
4:17 ive only been playing for a month, just learned how to reroute parts today when my mun lander sub-assembly would not attach to my S1b replica. How the hell did he make that ring with mk2 crew cabins
Also at 15:20 tf????
Matt your a inspiration Keep up the good work y'legend
Your very creative you made a space station without thinking about the designs, you just went build build build.
I cant even think of a design for my own satellite
Me:
Having a hard time getting a rendezvous...
Others:
A really enjoyable vid. I can't get a station a tenth this size off the ground, let alone into orbit. You are the Mozart of KSP. And yes, I'm sure this station will fly again. Oh, and good job in beating the Kraken to the end of the video!
I love taking big space stations in ksp and flying stuff into them
I really hope KSP 2 will allow us to build stuff like that without a crappy framerate and possibly with the option of moving inside it...
Matt, the formula for gravity generated by a ring in space is "a = 4π(r^2) / T" or when rearranged, "T = 4π(r^2) / a"
This formula literally tells you how fast the ring should go to simulate earth gravity (T is the number of seconds to do one rotation)
Meaning the formula for your ring is (Presuming gravity is supposed to be 9.81m/s^2 like earth):
T = 4πr^2 / 9.81
By my calculations, r should be 8.5 times the length of the cabin piece that you used to connect the rings to the main core (In meters).
Just plug in the numbers, and you have the rotation period to simulate earth gravity. Given the size of the ship, I think that the sped up footage looks about right, maybe a tad fast but reasonable
This idea came about from a reply to Coffee Dude.
Just a back up idea challenge
How about you launch some kind of large payload to earth orbit but every booster section is actually a space plane of some kind. (Can reuse them for symmetry, could make the center tank one or leave it, planes should be detachable when empty but could be interesting to have them as a chunk.
13:45 cool thing you can do now, we have orbital assembly, you CAN just send all the parts up in clumps, and have engineers assemble it
I had to halt construction on my massive station for the same reasons, though I actually played through and reconfigured/ rescued kerbals.
"A little bittersweet"
Bro that thing straight up melted, I don't think it can be called bittersweet.
"You know what i'm talking about if you're playing Kerbal Space Program, which you probably are because why would you be watching this if you don't"
Well, i got called out.
First Matt Lowne video since joining the discord server
If you want to play the footage at a higher speed in vegas, you could get an audio sample of the engines and overlay it in the stems. The engine sound seems to repeat quite quickly so you wouldn't need to sample a huge section of it.
Matt is a legend for the Kerbals. They like Matt’s buildings and will go down in Kerbal history. :3
I can’t believe you did it in a single launch. I know you did other ringed space stations in one launch but that is even larger!
Matt: makes giant space station.
KSP: Release the kraken!!!
Matt: *makes huge space station*
Space station: *happy face*
Matt: *makes huge refueling ship for said space station*
Space station: *goes full wacky waving inflatable tubeman from pure joy*
NASA: we are building a big space station but we can’t launch it in one piece because it’s to big and wonky.
Matt: hehe big rocket go brrr
